Abstract
Hybrid materials based on calcium phosphates and synthetic polymers can potentially be used for caries protection due to their similarity to hard tissues in terms of composition, structure and a number of properties. This study is focused on the biomimetic synthesis of hybrid materials consisting of hydroxiapatite and the zwitterionic polymers polysulfobetaine (PSB) and polycarboxybetaine (PCB) using controlled media conditions with a constant pH of 8.0-8.2 and Ca/P = 1.67. The results show that pH control is a dominant factor in the crystal phase formation, so nano-crystalline hydroxyapatite with a Ca/P ratio of 1.63-1.71 was observed as the mineral phase in all the materials prepared. The final polymer content measured for the synthesized hybrid materials was 48-52%. The polymer type affects the final microstructure, and the mineral particle size is thinner and smaller in the synthesis performed using PCB than using PSB. The final intermolecular interaction of the nano-crystallized hydroxyapatite was demonstrated to be stronger with PCB than with PSB as shown by our IR and Raman spectroscopy analyses. The higher remineralization potential of the PCB-containing synthesized material was demonstrated by in vitro testing using artificial saliva.

Abstract
In this study, modified kappa-carrageenan/pectin hydrogel patches were fabricated for treatment of buccal fungal infections. For this purpose, kappa-carrageenan-g-acrylic acid was modified with different thiolated agents (L-cysteine and 3-mercaptopropionic acid), and the thiol content of the resulting modified kappa-carrageenan was confirmed by elemental analyzer. Then, the hydrogel patches were fabricated, and characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, ex vivo mucoadhesion test, and swelling behavior. Triamcinolone acetonide was added either directly or by encapsulating within the poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles. The release amount of the drug from the directly loaded patch was 7.81 mg/g polymer, while it was 3.28 mg/g polymer for the encapsulated patch with the same content at 7 hr. The hydrogel patches had no cytotoxicity by cell culture studies. Finally, the drug loaded hydrogel patches were demonstrated antifungal activity against Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus flavus. These results provide that the novel modified kappa-carrageenan and pectin based buccal delivery system has promising antifungal property, and could have advantages compared to conventional buccal delivery systems.

Abstract
The combination therapy which has been proposed as the strategy for the cancer treatment could achieve a synergistic effect for cancer therapies and reduce the dosage of the applied drugs. On account of the the unique properties as the high absorbed water content, biocompatibility, and flexibility, the targeting nanogels have been considred as a suitable platform. Herein, a non-toxic pH/thermo-responsive hydrogel P(NIPAAm-co-DMAEMA) was synthesized and characterized through the free-radical polymerization and expanded upon an easy process for the preparation of the smart responsive nanogels; that is, the nanogels were used for the efficient and controlled delivery of the anti-cancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) and chemosensitizer curcumin (CUR) simultaneously like a promising strategy for the cancer treatment. The size of the nanogels, which were made, was about 70 nm which is relatively optimal for the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effects. The DOX and CUR co-loaded nanocarriers were prepared by the high encapsulation efficiency (EE). It is important to mention that the controlled drug release behavior of the nanocarriers was also investigated. An enhanced ability of DOX and CUR-loaded nanoformulation to induce the cell apoptosis in the HT-29 colon cancer cells which represented the greater antitumor efficacy than the single-drug formulations or free drugs was resulted through the In vitro cytotoxicity. Overall, according to the data, the simultaneous delivery of the dual drugs through the fabricated nanogels could synergistically potentiate the antitumor effects on the colon cancer (CC). ![]()

Abstract
In this work, poly(N,N'-dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate-co-N-isopropylacrylamide) copolymer films were polymerized on the surface of Au electrodes with a facile one-step method, and Au nanoclusters (AuNCs) and tetraphenylethene (TPE) were synchronously embedded in the films, designated as P(DMA-co-NIPA)/AuNCs/TPE. Ferrocene dicarboxylic acid (FDA), an electroactive probe in solution displayed inverse pH- and SO42--sensitive on-off cyclic voltammetric (CV) behaviors at the film electrodes. The electrocatalytic oxidation of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) mediated by FDA in solution could substantially amplify the CV response difference between the on and off states. Moreover, the two fluorescence emission (FL) signals from the TPE constituent at 450 nm and AuNCs component at 660 nm in the films also demonstrated SO42-- and pH-sensitive behaviors. Based on the aforementioned results, a 4-input/9-output biomolecular logic circuit was constructed with pH, Na2SO4, FDA and NADH as the inputs, and the CV signals and the FL responses at 450 and 660 nm at different levels as the outputs. Additionally, some functional non-Boolean devices were elaborately designed on an identical platform, including a 1-to-2 decoder, a 2-to-1 encoder, a 1-to-2 demultiplexer and different types of keypad locks. This work combines copolymer films, bioelectrocatalysis, and fluorescence together so that more complicated biocomputing systems could be established. This work may pave a new way to develop advanced and sophisticated biocomputing logic circuits and functional devices in the future.

Abstract
Ovalbumin-incorporated antigen carriers were prepared by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) of iron oxide nanoparticles for magnetic sorting of antigen-presenting cells. Iron oxide nanoparticles were surface-decorated with cationic shells by SI-ATRP, and the primary amines on the surface were further tri-methylated. Surface decoration of the nanoparticles was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and transmission electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectrometry. Ovalbumin-loaded nanoparticles showed higher incorporation in comparison to non-decorated nanoparticles, and the loaded ovalbumin was released faster at low pH than at neutral pH. Ovalbumin-loaded nanoparticles were endocytosed by macrophages, and macrophages with nanoparticles were easily harvested by magnetic separation. Magnetically sorted macrophages showed higher release of cytokines including TNF-α, MIP-1α, and IL-1β than unsorted macrophages. These results suggest that ovalbumin-loaded nanoparticles can potentially increase the efficiency of immune therapy during the antigen-presenting pathway.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In order to develop starch-based superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) with high water absorbency, both acrylic acid (AA) and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS) were graft copolymerized onto cassava starch, and St-g-AA-AMPS SAP was successfully synthesized. The effect of AA/AMPS molar ratio on the structure and swelling property of SAP was investigated. RESULTS Introduction of AMPS units improved the storage modulus and crosslinking density of St-g-AA-AMPS SAP, and was beneficial in forming a perfect network structure. With increasing AMPS content, the equilibrium swelling ratio and swelling rate constant (k) of the SAP first increased and then decreased, and the maximum swelling ratio reached 1200.0 and 90.0 g/g in distilled water and brine respectively, resulting from the high ionization constant and hydrophilic ability of AMPS, and improved tolerance to brine. By introducing AMPS units, the re-swelling capability of SAP was improved, and more hydrogen bonds could form between molecules of water and SAP, leading to an increase in non-freezing bound water and freezing bound water, and the water retention of SAP was enhanced. CONCLUSION Introduction of AMPS units improved the water absorption capacity, swelling rate, and water retention ability of St-g-AA-AMPS SAP, presenting wide application potential in agriculture and horticulture of desert regions. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry.
