Synthesis of Gold Nanoplates with Bioreducing Agent Using Syringe Pumps: A Kinetic Control

In Situ Crumpling of Gold Nanosheets into Spherical Three-Dimensional Architecture: Probing the Aggregation-Induced Enhancement in Photothermal Properties

Assembling two-dimensional noble metal nanocrystals into a three-dimensional mesoporous structure is of great value to solve the re-stacking issue for the practical application, which still remains a challenging technique. Herein, we report the one-pot fabrication of gold (Au) nanostructures with a crumpled paper ball-like morphology (Au NCPBs). The success of current work relies on the use of glutathione to crumple the branched Au nanosheets formed during the early stage, into spherical three-dimensional architecture, where the nanosheets are assembled with a mesoporous structure without intimate contact. When working as the agent toward photothermal conversion, the Au NCPBs exhibit enhanced photothermal conversion efficiency (η = 19.9%), as compared to that of flat and wrinkled Au nanosheets. Such an enhancement should be owing to the aggregation-induced effect, where the shortened inter-sheet distance contributes to an increased coupling between the plasmon oscillations/fields of the interacting Au nanosheets. The present study offers a feasible strategy to create spherical architecture of crumpled Au nanosheets and validates their structural advantage in photothermal applications, which could be potentially extended to other metals or alloys.

Preparation of Gold Nanoplates Using Ortho Carbonyl Compounds as Capping Agents for Electrochemical Sensing of Lead Ions

In this study, gold nanoplates were synthesized using plant molecules (gallic acid) following a kinetic control mode. The growth of nanoplates is mainly due to the specific adsorption of capping agents on certain crystal facets. Through systematical characterizations, it is found that the distance between two oxygen atoms in ortho carbonyl compounds matches well with the lattice spacing of gold (111) facets exactly, which is beneficial to the formation of twin seeds and further the growth of plate-like gold nanoparticles. The gold nanoplates on glassy carbon electrode show a remarkably improved electrochemical sensing activity of lead ions compared to the bare glassy carbon electrode or spherical gold nanoparticle-modified electrode. The modified electrode is expected to be used in the detection of lead ion concentration in heavy metal wastewater.

Role of polyphenols in plant-mediated synthesis of gold nanoparticles: identification of active components and their functional mechanism

In order to learn the active components and their functional mechanism during the plant-mediated synthesis of gold nanoparticles (GNPs), 16 kinds of plants were randomly selected as research objects, and statistical analysis was used to obtain more universal and systematic results. Polyphenols are proved to have the most prominent effect in both reductive and protective capability among all components. The relationship between polyphenols concentration and the protective and reductive capability was further studied in detail. Pyrogallic acid was used as a substitute for polyphenols to elucidate the functional mechanism. The concentration of polyphenols was found to be a critical factor for the preparation of GNPs, and the synergistic competition between phenolic hydroxyl and carbonyl groups caused by the oxidation of polyphenols could affect the particle size and morphology of GNPs. This work can provide excellent guidance for the controllable synthesis of GNPs via the plant-mediated method.

Synthesis of silver nanoplates on electrospun fibers via tollens reaction for SERS sensing of pesticide residues

Silver nanoplates were for the first time synthesized on electrospun chitosan/polyethylene oxide (CS/PEO) fibers via tollens reaction. Ag nanoplates/CS/PEO fibers were used as the SERS-active substrates for quantitative evaluation of 2-naphthylthiol, with an enhancement factor (1.41 ± 0.07) × 10⁶. The SERS-active substrates are flexible, stable, and easy for transportion and preservation, and act as the SERS platform for sensitive detection of the target. Thiram and thiabendazole as the representatives of pesticide residues were identified and detected by the Ag nanoplates/CS/PEO fibers, exhibiting linear response ranges from 10^-11 to 10^-7 M with a detection limit of 10^-11 M. The Ag nanoplates/CS/PEO fibers meet the requirement of thiram detection in practical samples, such as apple, pear, tomato, and cucumber juices. The strategy revealed the feasibility of fabrication of Ag nanoplates on electrospun fibers via tollens reaction and SERS sensing of pesticides in real samples. Ag nanoplates/CS/PEO fibers were fabricated by tollens reaction and electrospinning for SERS sensing of pesticide residues with high sensitivity.

Improving the Shape Yield and Long-Term Stability of Gold Nanoprisms with Poly(vinylpyrrolidone)

Gold nanoprisms (AuNPRs) are anisotropic nanostructures that have gained great attention in recent years because of their interesting and unique optical properties that can be tailored for biomedical, energy, and sensing applications. At present, several protocols have reported the high yield synthesis of AuNPRs of different dimensions using a seed-mediated approach. However, there is a need to develop reproducible and scalable methods with the goal of a controllable synthesis. Here, we report an improved seed-mediated synthesis of small monodisperse AuNPRs of distinct sizes in high yield using poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) as an additive in nanomolar concentrations. We show optimal synthetic parameters for a blue-shifting of the surface plasmon resonance band which correlates with the reduction in the edge length (L) of AuNPRs from 75 to 35 nm. Using measured extinction coefficients for AuNPRs of different sizes, a linear equation is proposed to estimate the concentration of unknown samples by using Beer's law. Interestingly, the use of nanomolar amounts of PVP during the growth of AuNPRs significantly improves the shape yield. The surface chemistry properties of AuNPRs were measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy and revealed that PVP chains interact with AuNPRs through the carbonyl oxygen. This method is reproducible and scalable and enables the synthesis of AuNPRs with long-term shape stability (1 year) in aqueous solution.

Peptide-Assisted 2-D Assembly toward Free-Floating Ultrathin Platinum Nanoplates as Effective Electrocatalysts

We demonstrate the 2-D anisotropic formation of ultrathin free-floating Pt nanoplates from the assembly of small nanocrystals using T7 peptide (Ac-TLTTLTN-CONH₂). As-formed nanoplates are rich in grain boundaries that can promote their catalytic activities. Furthermore, we demonstrate that a minor number of Pd atoms can selectively deposit on and stabilize the grain boundaries, which leads to enhanced structure stability. The Pd-enhanced Pt polycrystal nanoplates show great oxygen reduction reaction activities with 15.5 times higher specific activity and 13.7 times higher mass activity than current state-of-the-art commercial Pt/C electrocatalysts as well as 2.5 times higher mass activity for hydrogen evolution reaction compared with Pt/C.

Seed-mediated synthesis of plasmonic gold nanoribbons using cancer cells for hyperthermia applications

A surfactant-less, seed mediated, biological synthesis of two dimensional (2-D) nanoribbons in the presence of breast cancer cells (MCF7) is demonstrated. The diameter and yield of nanoribbons are tunable via seeds and gold precursor concentration. Such crystalline nanoribbons serve to enhance the Raman signals over MCF7 cells. The side and slopes of the triangular nanoplatelets fused as nanoribbons exhibit plasmon excitement in quadrupole resonance modes in the infrared region. Consequently, when irradiated with an infrared laser they show an excellent photothermal effect and rapid rise in temperature. The experimental results verified by finite-difference time-domain (FTDT) calculations reveal the presence of wedge-plasmon polaritons propagating along the edges of the nanoribbons. These simulations confirm that long aspect ratio nanoribbon's edges and vertices act as an active optical waveguide, allowing for heat propagation along the long axis, killing cancer cells in the process at lower power doses.

Fabrication of Integrated Cu2O@HKUST-1@Au Nanocatalysts via Galvanic Replacements toward Alcohols Oxidation Application

Metastable Cu₂O is an attractive material for the architectural design of integrated nanomaterials. In this context, the in situ growth of microporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) on Cu₂O nanocrystals with well-defined shapes (such as octahedron, truncated octahedron, and corner-truncated cube) was conducted under ambient conditions by using sacrificial Cu₂O nanocrystals as a copper ion source for the construction of HKUST-1. It was found that the growth rate of HKUST-1 on the (111) facet of octahedral Cu₂O was much faster than that on the (100) facet of cubic Cu₂O. A subsequent etching process on the core-shell-structured Cu₂O@HKUST-1 to remove Cu₂O results in hollow HKUST-1 with hierarchical pores, where the shapes of cavities are tailored depending on the original Cu₂O crystals. Importantly, it was found that the integrated Cu₂O@HKUST-1@Au nanocatalysts could be fabricated by galvanic replacement reaction between Cu₂O and AuCl₄^-, wherein the copper(I) ions from Cu₂O etching diffuse through the microporous MOF shell and reach to the external surface to reduce AuCl₄^- ions, thereby forming Au nanoparticles exclusively on the MOF external surface. Furthermore, the catalytic applications of Cu₂O@HKUST-1@Au toward liquid-phase oxidation of both aromatic and aliphatic alcohols were studied. Notably, 100% selectivities of aldehyde products were achieved without any further oxidation byproducts such as acid and ester.

Iron-oxide-based twin nanoplates with strong T2 relaxation shortening for contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging

Iron oxide nanomaterials have been intensively investigated over the past few decades as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents (CAs) due to their favorable magnetism and excellent biocompatibility. However, commercial iron-oxide-nanoparticle-based CAs suffer from low T2 relaxivity, which significantly limits their applications in the biomedical field. Herein, we report a new type of iron oxide nanoplate (IOP) with an interesting twinning plane, which is fabricated via seed growth. Compared with the conventional iron oxide (IO) spherical nanoparticles, iron oxide twin nanoplates (IOP-13) have a larger effective radius, higher saturation magnetization, and greater anisotropy, resulting in their superior T2 relaxivity of 571.21 mM-1 s-1 at 0.5 T, which is about six times higher than that of commercial IO nanoparticles. In vivo MR imaging demonstrated that IOP-13 could be used for liver imaging and liver tumor diagnosis with high sensitivity and accuracy, revealing the great potential of IOP-13 as a next-generation CA. This work provides a novel strategy of structure tuning to devise high-performance T2 contrast agents, which expands the applications of iron oxide nanoparticles in biology and materials.

One-Step Synthesis of Au-Ag Nanowires through Microorganism-Mediated, CTAB-Directed Approach

Synthesis and applications of one dimensional (1D) metal nanostructures have attracted much attention. However, one-step synthesis of bimetallic nanowires (NWs) has remained challenging. In this work, we developed a microorganism-mediated, hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-directed (MCD) approach to synthesize closely packed and long Au-Ag NWs with the assistance of a continuous injection pump. Characterization results confirmed that the branched Au-Ag alloy NWs was polycrystalline. And the Au-Ag NWs exhibited a strong absorbance at around 1950 nm in the near-infrared (NIR) region, which can find potential application in NIR absorption. In addition, the Au-Ag NWs showed excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enhancement when 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA) and rhodamine 6G (R6G) were used as probe molecules.

Cancer cells biomineralize ionic gold into nanoparticles-microplates via secreting defense proteins with specific gold-binding peptides

Cancer cells have the capacity to synthesize nanoparticles (NPs). The detailed mechanism of this process is not very well documented. We report the mechanism of biomineralization of aqueous gold chloride into NPs and microplates in the breast-cancer cell line MCF7. Spherical gold NPs are synthesized in these cells in the presence of serum in the culture media by the reduction of HAuCl₄. In the absence of serum, the cells exhibit gold microplate formation through seed-mediate growth albeit slower reduction. The structural characteristics of the two types of NPs under different media conditions were confirmed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM); crystallinity and metallic properties were assessed with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Gold-reducing proteins, related to cell stress initiate the biomineralization of HAuCl₄ in cells (under serum free conditions) as confirmed by infrared (IR) spectroscopy. MCF7 cells undergo irreversible replicative senescence when exposed to a high concentration of ionic gold and conversely remain in a dormant reversible quiescent state when exposed to a low gold concentration. The latter cellular state was achievable in the presence of the rho/ROCK inhibitor Y-27632. Proteomic analysis revealed consistent expression of specific proteins under serum and serum-free conditions. A high-throughput proteomic approach to screen gold-reducing proteins and peptide sequences was utilized and validated by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D).

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

Cancer cells are known to synthesize gold nanoparticles and microstructures, which are promising for bioimaging and other therapeutic applications. However, the detailed mechanism of such biomineralization process is not well understood yet. Herein, we demonstrate that cancer cells exposed to gold ions (grown in serum/serum-free conditions) secrete shock and stress-related proteins with specific gold-binding/reducing polypeptides. Cells undergo reversible senescence and can recover normal physiology when treated with the senescence inhibitor depending on culture condition. The use of mammalian cells as microincubators for synthesis of such particles could have potential influence on their uptake and biocompatibility. This study has important implications for in-situ reduction of ionic gold to anisotropic micro-nanostructures that could be used in-vivo clinical applications and tumor photothermal therapy.

Controllable Biosynthesis and Properties of Gold Nanoplates Using Yeast Extract

ABSTRACT

Biosynthesis of gold nanostructures has drawn increasing concerns because of its green and sustainable synthetic process. However, biosynthesis of gold nanoplates is still a challenge because of the expensive source and difficulties of controllable formation of morphology and size. Herein, one-pot biosynthesis of gold nanoplates is proposed, in which cheap yeast was extracted as a green precursor. The morphologies and sizes of the gold nanostructures can be controlled via varying the pH value of the biomedium. In acid condition, gold nanoplates with side length from 1300 ± 200 to 300 ± 100 nm and height from 18 to 15 nm were obtained by increasing the pH value. Whereas, in neutral or basic condition, only gold nanoflowers and nanoparticles were obtained. It was determined that organic molecules, such as succinic acid, lactic acid, malic acid, and glutathione, which are generated in metabolism process, played important role in the reduction of gold ions. Besides, it was found that the gold nanoplates exhibited plasmonic property with prominent dipole infrared resonance in near-infrared region, indicating their potential in surface plasmon-enhanced applications, such as bioimaging and photothermal therapy.

Differential role of PVP on the synthesis of plasmonic gold nanostructures and their catalytic and SERS properties

Differential role of PVP modified with halide ions has been meticulously studied for in situ tuning of Au nanoparticle growth utilizing XRD measurements together with FTIR data, thus quantifying their catalysis and SERS applications.

Bio-inspired synthesis of metal nanomaterials and applications

This critical review focuses on recent advances in the bio-inspired synthesis of metal nanomaterials (MNMs) using microorganisms, viruses, plants, proteins and DNA molecules as well as their applications in various fields. Prospects in the design of bio-inspired MNMs for novel applications are also discussed.

Magnetic and noble metal nanocomposites for separation and optical detection of biological species

Nanoalloys and nanocomposites are widely studied classes of nanomaterials within the context of biological systems. They are of immense interest because of the possibility of tuning the optical, magnetic, electronic and chemical properties through particle composition and internal architecture. In principle these properties can therefore be optimized for application in biological detections such as of DNA sequences, bacteria, viruses, antibodies, antigens, and cancer cells. This article presents an overview of methods currently used for nanoalloy and nanocomposite synthesis and characterisation, focusing on Au-Ag and FexOy@Au structures as primary components in detection platforms for plasmonic and magnetically enabled plasmonic bio-sensing.

Green synthesis of gold nanoparticles using aspartame and their catalytic activity for p-nitrophenol reduction

We demonstrated a facile and environmental-friendly approach to form gold nanoparticles through the reduction of HAuCl4 by aspartame. The single-crystalline structure was illustrated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) results indicated that aspartame played a pivotal role in the reduction and stabilization of the gold crystals. The crystals were stabilized through the successive hydrogen-bonding network constructed between the water and aspartame molecules. Additionally, gold nanoparticles synthesized through aspartame were shown to have good catalytic activity for the reduction of p-nitrophenol to p-aminophenol in the presence of NaBH4.

Plant-Mediated Fabrication and Surface Enhanced Raman Property of Flower-Like Au@Pd Nanoparticles

The flower-like nanostructures of an Au core and Pd petals with the average size of 47.8 nm were fabricated through the successive reduction of HAuCl₄ and Na₂PdCl₄ at room temperature. During the synthesis, Cacumen Platycladi leaf extract served as weak reductant and capping agent. Characterization techniques such as Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction characterizations were employed to confirm that the as-synthesized nanoparticles have the structure of core-shell. The obtained core-shell nanoflowers exhibited good surface enhanced Raman spectroscopic activity with Rhodamine 6G.

Nanostructured materials for applications in surface-enhanced Raman scattering

This highlight summarizes current advances in the design and the employment of nanostructured materials in SERS substrates especially from the dimensional point of view. We then talk about synthesis methods and the novel properties of these nanostructured materials with their potential applications in SERS.
