DFT Study on the Effect of Water on the Carbonation of Portlandite

Density functional theory study on the formation mechanism of CaClOH in municipal solid waste incineration fly ash

Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash is defined as a kind of hazardous waste because of its high levels of multiple pollutants. The main component of MSWI fly ash is CaClOH, and the characteristics have not achieved consensus. And density functional theory (DFT) was used to calculate the formation process of CaClOH in this study, which mainly included HCl adsorption on CaO (0 0 1) surface and Ca(OH)2 (0 0 1) surface and the surface reaction process. The reaction mechanism was investigated. The results showed that the maximum adsorption energies of HCl on CaO and Ca(OH)2 surfaces reached - 195.17 kJ/mol and - 83.48 kJ/mol, respectively, representing strong chemisorption. The chemisorption process was shown as the adsorption of H atom on O site, and the adsorption capacity was reflected in the adsorption range of O site. The significant electron density overlap between O site and H atom meant that a new chemical bond formed, which made the adsorption structure stable. The adsorption energy of multi-HCl adsorption on the crystal surfaces was not proportional to the number of HCl molecule, indicating that the adsorption processes were influenced by each other. After surface reaction, the H-Cl bond was broken completely, and the structure of CaO and Ca(OH)2 changed to new structures. According to transition state (TS) search, the formation of CaClOH had a higher priority, easier than that of CaCl2, explaining the presence of CaClOH in fly ash. The study provides helpful information for the solidification treatment of fly ash.

Molecular-scale mechanisms of CO2 mineralization in nanoscale interfacial water films

The calamitous impacts of unabated carbon emission from fossil-fuel-burning energy infrastructure call for accelerated development of large-scale CO₂ capture, utilization and storage technologies that are underpinned by a fundamental understanding of the chemical processes at a molecular level. In the subsurface, rocks rich in divalent metals can react with CO₂, permanently sequestering it in the form of stable metal carbonate minerals, with the CO₂-H₂O composition of the post-injection pore fluid acting as a primary control variable. In this Review, we discuss mechanistic reaction pathways for aqueous-mediated carbonation with carbon mineralization occurring in nanoscale adsorbed water films. In the extreme of pores filled with a CO₂-dominant fluid, carbonation reactions are confined to angstrom to nanometre-thick water films coating mineral surfaces, which enable metal cation release, transport, nucleation and crystallization of metal carbonate minerals. Although seemingly counterintuitive, laboratory studies have demonstrated facile carbonation rates in these low-water environments, for which a better mechanistic understanding has come to light in recent years. The overarching objective of this Review is to delineate the unique underlying molecular-scale reaction mechanisms that govern CO₂ mineralization in these reactive and dynamic quasi-2D interfaces. We highlight the importance of understanding unique properties in thin water films, such as how water dielectric properties, and consequently ion solvation and hydration behaviour, can change under nanoconfinement. We conclude by identifying important frontiers for future work and opportunities to exploit these fundamental chemical insights for decarbonization technologies in the twenty-first century.

Carbonation Reaction Mechanisms of Portlandite Predicted from Enhanced Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Geological carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) is a promising technology for curbing the global warming crisis by reduction of the overall carbon footprint. Degradation of cement wellbore casings due to carbonation reactions in the underground CO2 storage environment is one of the central issues in assessing the long-term success of the CCS operations. However, the complexity of hydrated cement coupled with extreme subsurface environmental conditions makes it difficult to understand the carbonation reaction mechanisms leading to the loss of well integrity. In this work, we use biased ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations to explore the reactivity of supercritical CO2 with the basal and edge surfaces of a model hydrated cement phase—portlandite—in dry scCO2 and water-rich conditions. Our simulations show that in dry scCO2 conditions, the undercoordinated edge surfaces of portlandite experience a fast barrierless reaction with CO2, while the fully hydroxylated basal surfaces suppress the formation of carbonate ions, resulting in a higher reactivity barrier. We deduce that the rate-limiting step in scCO2 conditions is the formation of the surface carbonate barrier which controls the diffusion of CO2 through the layer. The presence of water hinders direct interaction of CO2 with portlandite as H2O molecules form well-structured surface layers. In the water-rich environment, CO2 undergoes a concerted reaction with H2O and surface hydroxyl groups to form bicarbonate complexes. We relate the variation of the free-energy barriers in the formation of the bicarbonate complexes to the structure of the water layer at the interface which is, in turn, dictated by the surface chemistry and the degree of nanoconfinement.

Exchange Reactions at Mineral Interfaces

Exchange reactions are a family of chemical reactions that appear when mineral surfaces come into contact with protic solvents. Exchange reactions can also be understood as a unique interaction at mineral interfaces. Particularly significant interactions occurring at mineral surfaces are those with water and CO₂. The rather complex process occurring when minerals such as calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) phases come into contact with aqueous environments is referred to as a metal-proton exchange reaction (MPER). This process leads to the leaching of calcium ions from the near-surface region, the first step in the corrosion of cement-bound materials. Among the various corrosion reactions of C-S-H phases, the MPER appears to be the most important one. A promising approach to bridging certain problems caused by MPER and carbonation is the passivation of C-S-H surfaces. Today, such passivation is reached, for instance, by the functionalization of C-S-H surfaces with water-repelling organic films. Unfortunately, these organic films are weak against temperature and especially weak against abrasion. Exchange reactions at mineral interfaces allow the preparation of intrinsic, hydrophobic surfaces of C-S-H phases just at room temperature via a metal-metal exchange reaction.

Carbonation of wollastonite(001) competing hydration: microscopic insights from ion spectroscopy and density functional theory

In this paper, we report about the influence of the chemical potential of water on the carbonation reaction of wollastonite (CaSiO3) as a model surface of cement and concrete. Total energy calculations based on density functional theory combined with kinetic barrier predictions based on nudge elastic band method show that the exposure of the water-free wollastonite surface to CO2 results in a barrier-less carbonation. CO2 reacts with the surface oxygen and forms carbonate (CO3(2-)) complexes together with a major reconstruction of the surface. The reaction comes to a standstill after one carbonate monolayer has been formed. In case one water monolayer is covering the wollastonite surface, the carbonation is no more barrier-less, yet ending in a localized monolayer. Covered with multilayers of water, the thermodynamic ground state of the wollastonite completely changes due to a metal-proton exchange reaction (also called early stage hydration) and Ca(2+) ions are partially removed from solid phase into the H2O/wollastonite interface. Mobile Ca(2+) reacts again with CO2 and forms carbonate complexes, ending in a delocalized layer. By means of high-resolution time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry images, we confirm that hydration can lead to a partially delocalization of Ca(2+) ions on wollastonite surfaces. Finally, we evaluate the impact of our model surface results by the meaning of low-energy ion-scattering spectroscopy combined with careful discussion about the competing reactions of carbonation vs hydration.
