Abstract
The present work proposes to investigate the effect of an ultrahigh molecular weight silicone rubber (UHMW-SR) and two ethylene methyl acrylate copolymers (EMA) with different methyl acrylate (MA) content on the mechanical and fire performance of a fireproof acrylonitrile butadiene styrene copolymer (ABS) composite, with an optimum amount of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and aluminum diethyl phosphinate (AlPi). ABS formulations with a global flame retardant weight content of 20 wt.% (ABS P) were melt-compounded, with and without EMA and UHMW-SR, in a Brabender mixer. During this batch process, ABS P formulations with UHMW-SR and/or EMA registered lower torque values than those of ABS P. By means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), it was possible to observe that all ABS composites exhibited a homogenous structure without phase separation or particle agglomeration. Slightly improved interfacial interaction between the well-dispersed flame-retardant particles in the presence of EMA and/or UHMW-SR was also noticed. Furthermore, synergies in mechanical properties by adding both EMA and UHMW-SR into ABS P were ascertained. An enhancement of molecular mobility that contributed to the softening of ABS P was observed under dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). An improvement of its flexibility, ductility and toughness were also registered under three-point-bending trials, and even more remarkable synergies were noticed in Charpy notched impact strength. Particularly, a 212% increase was achieved when 5 wt.% of EMA with 29 wt.% of MA and 2 wt.% of UHMW-SR in ABS P (ABS E29 S P) were added. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the presence of EMA copolymers in ABS P formulations did not interfere with its thermal decomposition, whereas UHMW-SR presence decreased its thermal stability at the beginning of the decomposition. Although the addition of EMA or UHMW-SR, as well as the combination of both in ABS P increased the pHRR in cone calorimetry, UL 94 V-0 classification was maintained for all flame-retarded ABS composites. In addition, through SEM analysis of cone calorimetry sample residue, a more cohesive surface char layer, with Si-O-C network formation confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), was shown in ABS P formulations with UHMW-SR.

Abstract
Most organic polymeric materials have high flammability, for which the large amounts of smoke, toxic gases, heat, and melt drips produced during their burning cause immeasurable damages to human life and property every year. Despite some desirable results having been achieved by conventional flame-retardant methods, their application is encountering more and more difficulties with the ever-increasing high flame-retardant requirements such as high flame-retardant efficiency, great persistence, low release of heat, smoke, and toxic gases, and more importantly not deteriorating or even enhancing the overall properties of polymers. Under such condition, some advanced flame-retardant methods have been developed in the past years based on "all-in-one" intumescence, nanotechnology, in situ reinforcement, intrinsic char formation, plasma treatment, biomimetic coatings, etc., which have provided potential solutions to the dilemma of conventional flame-retardant methods. This review briefly outlines the development, application, and problems of conventional flame-retardant methods, including bulk-additive, bulk-copolymerization, and surface treatment, and focuses on the raise, development, and potential application of advanced flame-retardant methods. The future development of flame-retardant methods is further discussed.

Abstract
Lignin-based flame retardants represent great promising next-generation flame retardants due to their sustainability, unique aromatic structure, and high charring capability. However, their applications are still limited by the compatibility, processability, and efficiency of flame retardancy. Here, a green functional lignin-based nanofiller (lignin-diethylenetriamine/red phosphorus nanoparticles, Lignin-N-P NPs) was prepared by the chemical modification and co-precipitation. After blending with the commercial acrylonitrile butadiene styrene copolymers (ABS), the physical, chemical, and flame retardant properties of the blends reveal that Lignin-N-P NPs/ABS blend has acceptable processability, mechanical properties, and significantly improved thermal stability and fire performance. Its values of peak heat release rate and total heat released per unit area were significantly dropped 67.8% and 77.5%, respectively. This study will initiate a new design for not only flame retardants but also lignin-based materials.

Abstract
Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene/silver nanoparticles (ABS/AgNPs) composites were manufactured through the plastic processing method. Three different matrices were used to obtain polymer and composite samples containing 0.5 wt % and 1.0 wt % of silver nanoparticles, respectively. The aim of this study was to examine physicochemical properties and stability of the materials in the in vitro conditions for two years. The results showed that composites made from amorphous matrices had comparable mechanical properties after incorporation of AgNPs. The values of Young modulus and tensile strength increased after the first and second year of investigation. Silver nanoparticles did not alter the surface parameters-e.g., roughness and contact angle also retained stable values after the in vitro incubation in water solution. The scanning electron observation revealed homogeneous distribution of silver modifier in all the matrices. The 24-month incubation of materials proved the stability of the composites microstructure. The DSC analysis revealed that addition of AgNPs may decrease glass transition temperature of the composite materials which was also reduced after 12 and 24 months of incubation. The attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopic studies did not indicate significant changes in the ABS matrices either upon their modification with AgNPs or after the long-term testing. The conducted studies proved that all the composites are stable and may be used for a long-term working period.
