Abstract
A series of 2-(1H-indol-2-yl)-3-acrylonitrile derivatives, 2a-x, 3, 4a-b, 5a-d, 6a-b, and 7, were synthesized as potential antitumor and antimicrobial agents. The structures of the prepared compounds were evaluated based on elemental analysis, IR, 1H- and 13NMR, as well as MS spectra. X-ray crystal analysis of the representative 2-(1H-indol-2-yl)-3-acrylonitrile 2l showed that the acrylonitrile double bond was Z-configured. All compounds were screened at the National Cancer Institute (USA) for their activities against a panel of approximately 60 human tumor cell lines and the relationship between structure and in vitro antitumor activity is discussed. Compounds of interest 2l and 5a-d showed significant growth inhibition potency against various tumor cell lines with the mean midpoint GI50 values of all tests in the range of 0.38-7.91 μM. The prominent compound with remarkable activity (GI50 = 0.0244-5.06 μM) and high potency (TGI = 0.0866-0.938 μM) against some cell lines of leukemia (HL-60(TB)), non-small cell lung cancer (NCI-H522), colon cancer (COLO 205), CNS cancer (SF-539, SNB-75), ovarian cancer ((OVCAR-3), renal cancer (A498, RXF 393), and breast cancer (MDA-MB-468) was 3-[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]-2-(1-methyl-1H-indol-2-yl)acrylonitrile (5c). Moreover, the selected 2-(1H-indol-2-yl)-3-acrylonitriles 2a-c and 2e-x were evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal activities against Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens as well as Candida albicans. Among them, 2-(1H-indol-2-yl)-3-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)acrylonitrile (2x) showed the most potent antimicrobial activity and therefore it can be considered as a lead structure for further development of antimicrobial agents. Finally, molecular docking studies as well as drug-likeness and ADME profile prediction were carried out.

Abstract
Green, eco-benign, and sustainable synthesis is paramount in present chemistry. Here, a facile, efficient, and [H2-DABCO][HSO4]2 ionic-liquid-catalyzed one-pot multicomponent synthesis of hexahydroquinolines was reported under ambient reaction conditions. The reaction of 1,3-dicarbonyls, malononitrile, and ammonium acetate with various aldehydes in the presence of an ionic liquid catalyst and EtOH solvent at room temperature afforded excellent yields (76-100%) of hexahydroquinolines under a short reaction time (5-15 min). Mild reaction conditions, broad substrate scope (28 derivatives), and column-chromatography-free synthesis with excellent catalytic efficiency and good recyclability rendered this protocol superior and practical. The greenness of the present method was assessed through eco-score and E-factor. The significant results in gram-scale synthetic conditions validate its applicability in industries as well as academia in the near future.

Abstract
In this study, a novel periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) containing diamide-diacid bridges was conveniently prepared using ethylenediaminetetraacetic dianhydride to support Cu(ii) species and affording supramolecular Cu@EDTAD-PMO nanoparticles efficiently. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) results confirmed the successful synthesis of Cu@EDTAD-PMO. The stabilized Cu(ii) nanoparticles inside the mesochannels of the new PMO provided appropriate sites for selective oxidation of different benzyl alcohol derivatives to their corresponding benzaldehydes and subsequent Knoevenagel condensation with malononitrile. Therefore, Cu@EDTAD-PMO can be considered as a multifunctional heterogeneous catalyst, which is prepared easily through a green procedure and demonstrates appropriate stability with almost no leaching of the Cu(ii) nanoparticles into the reaction medium, and easy recovery through simple filtration. The recycled Cu@EDTAD-PMO was reused up to five times without significant loss of its catalytic activity. The stability, recoverability, and reusability of the designed heterogeneous catalyst were also studied under various reaction conditions.

Abstract
A DABCO catalyzed aza-Michael addition of thiazolidine-2,4-dione to a variety of electron deficient alkenes has been developed. Additionally, a DABCO/succinic acid salt system has been designed that allows for the one pot tandem aza-Michael/Knoevenagel reaction of thiazolidine-2,4-dione to give difunctionalized thiazolidine-2,4-dione products. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of a one-pot tandem aza-Michael/Knoevenagel reaction involving thiazolidine-2,4-dione.

Abstract
One of the most crucial attributes of synthetic organic chemistry is to design organic reactions under the facets of green chemistry for the sustainable production of chemicals. Thus, due to the intensified environmental and safety concern, the need for new technologies for conducting chemical transformation has grown. In this regard, there is enormous interest in the use of heterogeneous catalysts as they generally avoid the generation of waste, require fewer toxic reagents, as well as entail easier separation and recycling of the catalyst. α,β-Unsaturated acids have been widely used in various industrial applications and have been identified as one of the most promising chemicals obtained via the Knoevenagel condensation reaction. This review aims to discuss the most pertinent heterogeneous catalytic systems such as zeolites, mesoporous silica, ionic liquids, metal oxides, and graphitic carbon nitride-based catalysts in the Knoevenagel reaction. Ultimately, this review focuses not only on the catalyst but also provides an overall idea and guide for the preparation of new catalysts with outstanding properties by looking at the chemical and engineering aspects such as the reaction conditions and the mechanisms.

Abstract
The desirable properties of ionic liquids (ILs) enable their use in various branches of chemistry, through a wide range of applications, e. g. as organic electrolytes. In the present study, an efficient two-step method was developed for the synthesis of long-chain ionic liquids with alkyl derivatives of DABCO as cations and bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide as anions. ILs obtained with high yields (≥91 %) were solids with melting points that increased with the rise in the number of carbon atoms of the alkyl substituent in the bicyclic cation. The structure of the compounds was confirmed by spectroscopic methods and elemental analysis. All compounds were soluble in the main solvents except water and hexane. The solubility in organic solvents such as acetonitrile allowed the use of synthesized ILs in electrochemical capacitors. Electrochemical tests revealed that the ILs enhanced the conductivity of organic electrolytes. This phenomenon improved the cyclability and reduced the internal resistance of the electrochemical capacitors.

Abstract
With their ability to dissolve inorganic as well as organic materials, ionic
liquids have emerged as a versatile solvent system for a diverse range of organic
transformations. In the past few decades, the literature has witnessed remarkable advances
in a wide range of organic conversions carried out in the presence of various imidazolium,
pyridinium, pyrrolidinium, quinolinium and diazobicyclo-octane based ionic liquids. In
the reaction, ionic liquids serve as a solvent, catalyst or sometimes both. In certain cases,
they are also modified with metal nanoparticles or complexes to form heterogeneous
catalysts or are immobilized onto solid support like agar-agar to act as solid-support
catalysts. Reactions catalysed by ionic liquids incorporating chiral catalysts possess the
advantageous features of being highly enantioselective and reproducible, besides being
economical and easy to handle. In this review, an updated insight regarding the role played by ionic liquids in
various C-C bond-forming organic reactions, has been summarized.

Abstract
In this work, biologically significant 3,3-di(indolyl)indolin-2-ones have been synthesized using a silica-coated magnetic-nanoparticle-supported 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO)-derived and acid-functionalized ionic liquid as the catalytic entity. The fabricated nanocomposite catalyzes the pseudo-three-component reaction of isatins and indoles explicitly via hydrogen-bonding interactions between substrates and the catalyst. The nanocatalytic system utilizes water as the green reaction medium to obtain a library of indolinones in good to excellent yields under mild reaction conditions. Besides, the catalyst could be easily recovered from the reaction mixture through simple external magnetic forces, which enables excellent recyclability of the catalyst for successive runs without appreciable loss in catalytic activity. Hence, the outcomes of the present methodology make the nanocatalyst a potential candidate for the development of green and sustainable chemical processes.

Abstract
Herein, a novel DABCO-based dicationic ionic liquid (bis-DIL) was easily prepared from the sonication of DABCO with 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol and then characterized by several techniques. Thereafter, under the ultimate green conditions, the performance of the bis-DIL was examined for the sono-synthesis of a new library of bis-2-amino-5-arylidenethiazol-4-ones via one-pot pseudo-five-component Knoevenagel condensation reaction of appropriate dialdehydes, rhodanine and amines. This protocol is tolerant towards several mono- and dialdehydes, excellently high yielding and affording access to the desired products in a single step within a short reaction time. Compared with the conventional methodologies, the proposed method displayed several remarkable merits such as milder reaction conditions without any side product, green solvent media, recording well in a variety of green metrics and applicability in gram-scale production. The recyclability of the bis-DIL was also investigated with an average recovered yield of 97% for six sequential cycles without any significant loss of the activity.

Abstract
A novel charge-transfer complex triggered sulfonylation of 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) with mild reaction conditions has been developed. The formation of a charge-transfer complex between electron-withdrawing (hetero)aryl sulfonyl chloride and DABCO allows the synthesis of N-ethylated piperazine sulfonamide in good yields. The reaction has a high functional group tolerance. Spectroscopic studies confirmed the charge-transfer complex formation between sulfonyl chlorides and DABCO, which facilitates the C-N bond cleavage of DABCO.

Amine-Functionalized Sugarcane Bagasse: A Renewable Catalyst for Efficient Continuous Flow Knoevenagel Condensation Reaction at Room Temperature. Molecules 2017; 23:molecules23010043. Abstract
A biomass-based catalyst with amine groups (–NH2), viz., amine-functionalized sugarcane bagasse (SCB-NH2), was prepared through the amination of sugarcane bagasse (SCB) in a two-step process. The physicochemical properties of the catalyst were characterized through FT-IR, elemental analysis, XRD, TG, and SEM-EDX techniques, which confirmed the –NH2 group was grafted onto SCB successfully. The catalytic performance of SCB-NH2 in Knoevenagel condensation reaction was tested in the batch and continuous flow reactions. Significantly, it was found that the catalytic performance of SCB-NH2 is better in flow system than that in batch system. Moreover, the SCB-NH2 presented an excellent catalytic activity and stability at the high flow rate. When the flow rate is at the 1.5 mL/min, no obvious deactivation was observed and the product yield and selectivity are more than 97% and 99% after 80 h of continuous reaction time, respectively. After the recovery of solvent from the resulting solution, a white solid was obtained as a target product. As a result, the SCB-NH2 is a promising catalyst for the synthesis of fine chemicals by Knoevenagel condensation reaction in large scale, and the modification of the renewable SCB with –NH2 group is a potential avenue for the preparation of amine-functionalized catalytic materials in industry.

Abstract
Abstract
This work reports on the use of the amino acid ionic liquids (AAILs) which have been used as catalysts in Knoevenagel condensation of various aldehydes with malononitrile. For research we use tetrabutylammonium ionic liquids based on eight natural amino acids. The reaction was carried out in an aqueous medium. Using water as solvent provided efficient and simple method of isolation of pure product with high yield. Moreover, amino acid ionic liquid dissolved in water could be reused many times without any loss of its catalytic activity. The influence of the anion was studied. Moreover the effect of technological parameters such as: the temperature, the catalyst content, and the reaction time on yield of reaction were investigated.
