Computational Screening of Metal Catecholates for Ammonia Capture in Metal–Organic Frameworks

The development of a comprehensive toolbox based on multi-level, high-throughput screening of MOFs for CO/N2 separations

The separation of CO/N2 mixtures is a challenging problem in the petrochemical sector due to the very similar physical properties of these two molecules, such as size, molecular weight and boiling point. To solve this and other challenging gas separations, one requires a holistic approach. The complexity of a screening exercise for adsorption-based separations arises from the multitude of existing porous materials, including metal-organic frameworks. Besides, the multivariate nature of the performance criteria that needs to be considered when designing an optimal adsorbent and a separation process - i.e. an optimal material requires fulfillment of several criteria simultaneously - makes the screening challenging. To address this, we have developed a multi-scale approach combining high-throughput molecular simulation screening, data mining and advanced visualization, as well as process system modelling, backed up by experimental validation. We have applied our recent advances in the engineering of porous materials' morphology to develop advanced monolithic structures. These conformed, shaped monoliths can be used readily in industrial applications, bringing a valuable strategy for the development of advanced materials. This toolbox is flexible enough to be applied to multiple adsorption-based gas separation applications.

Enhancing toxic gas uptake performance of Zr-based MOF through uncoordinated carboxylate and copper insertion; ammonia adsorption

This study reports the development of a new type of Zr-based MOF by inserting copper and carboxylate into HCl modulated UiO-67 (UiO-67-vac) which gained higher surface area/vacant than UiO-67. Copper was inserted into MOF containing uncoordinated carboxylate group, to create open metal site in the form of -COOCu which called UiO-67-ox-Cu. PXRD, FTIR, BET, SEM, EDS, UV-Vis and XPS were used to characterize the obtained MOFs. As expected, UiO-67-ox-Cu exhibits the highest ammonia capacity (178.3 mg/g) among UiO-67 (104 mg/g) and UiO-67-vac (121 mg/g) at 298 K and 1 bar pressure. In fact, the significant increase in ammonia uptake of UiO-67-ox-Cu is related to the modified binding affinity of -COOCu groups with ammonia. Moreover, UiO-67-vac with the highest surface area showed the hydrogen adsorption capacity of 18.75 mg/g at 77 K, which is comparable or even superior to the previously reported value. Interestingly, adsorption capacities were retained with slight changes around five cycles and three regeneration temperatures, 25, 60 and 120 °C under vacuum pressure which were proved by PXRD after ammonia adsorption/desorption. The good results obtained in the current work clearly show the role of postsynthesis functionalization approach for creation of new metal/active sites into MOFs.

Exceptional Packing Density of Ammonia in a Dual-Functionalized Metal-Organic Framework

We report the reversible adsorption of ammonia (NH₃) up to 9.9 mmol g^-1 in a robust Al-based metal-organic framework, MFM-303(Al), which is functionalized with free carboxylic acid and hydroxyl groups. The unique pore environment decorated with these acidic sites results in an exceptional packing density of NH₃ at 293 K (0.801 g cm^-3) comparable to that of solid NH₃ at 193 K (0.817 g cm^-3). In situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering reveal the critical role of free -COOH and -OH groups in immobilizing NH₃ molecules. Breakthrough experiments confirm the excellent performance of MFM-303(Al) for the capture of NH₃ at low concentrations under both dry and wet conditions.

Adsorption and Detection of Hazardous Trace Gases by Metal-Organic Frameworks

The quest for advanced designer adsorbents for air filtration and monitoring hazardous trace gases has recently been more and more driven by the need to ensure clean air in indoor, outdoor, and industrial environments. How to increase safety with regard to personal protection in the event of hazardous gas exposure is a critical question for an ever-growing population spending most of their lifetime indoors, but is also crucial for the chemical industry in order to protect future generations of employees from potential hazards. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are already quite advanced and promising in terms of capacity and specific affinity to overcome limitations of current adsorbent materials for trace and toxic gas adsorption. Due to their advantageous features (e.g., high specific surface area, catalytic activity, tailorable pore sizes, structural diversity, and range of chemical and physical properties), MOFs offer a high potential as adsorbents for air filtration and monitoring of hazardous trace gases. Three advanced topics are considered here, in applying MOFs for selective adsorption: (i) toxic gas adsorption toward filtration for respiratory protection as well as indoor and cabin air, (ii) enrichment of hazardous gases using MOFs, and (iii) MOFs as sensors for toxic trace gases and explosives.

Highly effective ammonia removal in a series of Brønsted acidic porous polymers: investigation of chemical and structural variations

Efficient removal of ammonia from air is demonstrated in a series of Brønsted acidic porous polymers under dry and humid conditions. The impact of acidic group strength and their spatial distribution on the ammonia uptake is investigated systematically.

Although a widely used and important industrial gas, ammonia (NH₃) is also highly toxic and presents a substantial health and environmental hazard. The development of new materials for the effective capture and removal of ammonia is thus of significant interest. The capture of ammonia at ppm-level concentrations relies on strong interactions between the adsorbent and the gas, as demonstrated in a number of zeolites and metal–organic frameworks with Lewis acidic open metal sites. However, these adsorbents typically exhibit diminished capacity for ammonia in the presence of moisture due to competitive adsorption of water and/or reduced structural stability. In an effort to overcome these challenges, we are investigating the performance of porous polymers functionalized with Brønsted acidic groups, which should possess inherent structural stability and enhanced reactivity towards ammonia in the presence of moisture. Herein, we report the syntheses of six different Brønsted acidic porous polymers exhibiting –NH₃Cl, –CO₂H, –SO₃H, and –PO₃H₂ groups and featuring two different network structures with respect to interpenetration. We further report the low- and high-pressure NH₃ uptake in these materials, as determined under dry and humid conditions using gas adsorption and breakthrough measurements. Under dry conditions, it is possible to achieve NH₃ capacities as high as 2 mmol g^–1 at 0.05 mbar (50 ppm) equilibrium pressure, while breakthrough saturation capacities of greater than 7 mmol g^–1 are attainable under humid conditions. Chemical and structural variations deduced from these measurements also revealed an important interplay between acidic group spatial arrangement and NH₃ uptake, in particular that interpenetration can promote strong adsorption even for weaker Brønsted acidic functionalities. In situ infrared spectroscopy provided further insights into the mechanism of NH₃ adsorption, revealing a proton transfer between ammonia and acidic sites as well as strong hydrogen bonding interactions in the case of the weaker carboxylic acid-functionalized polymer. These findings highlight that an increase of acidity or porosity does not necessarily correspond directly to increased NH₃ capacity and advocate for the development of more fine-tuned design principles for efficient NH₃ capture under a range of concentrations and conditions.
