Abstract
Professor Giulio C. Sarti has provided outstanding contributions to the modelling of fluid sorption and transport in polymeric materials, with a special eye on industrial applications such as membrane separation, due to his Chemical Engineering background. He was the co-creator of innovative theories such as the Non-Equilibrium Theory for Glassy Polymers (NET-GP), a flexible tool to estimate the solubility of pure and mixed fluids in a wide range of polymers, and of the Standard Transport Model (STM) for estimating membrane permeability and selectivity. In this review, inspired by his rigorous and original approach to representing membrane fundamentals, we provide an overview of the most significant and up-to-date modeling tools available to estimate the main properties governing polymeric membranes in fluid separation, namely solubility and diffusivity. The paper is not meant to be comprehensive, but it focuses on those contributions that are most relevant or that show the potential to be relevant in the future. We do not restrict our view to the field of macroscopic modelling, which was the main playground of professor Sarti, but also devote our attention to Molecular and Multiscale Hierarchical Modeling. This work proposes a critical evaluation of the different approaches considered, along with their limitations and potentiality.

Abstract
In this study, a thermodynamic model has been used to determine the solubility of carbon dioxide in an aqueous solution which is the combination of methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) and aminoethylethanolamine (AEEA). The physical equilibriums have been considered between the liquid and vapor phases and chemical equilibrium in the liquid phase. The SAFT-HR equation of state has been used to specify the fugacity coefficients of the components in the vapor phase. The liquid phase is considered as an electrolyte solution besides; the extended UNIQUAC has been applied to figure out the activity coefficients. The bubble point calculation has been used in this research. This method includes two main loops. Calculations related to chemical equilibrium are performed in the interior loop and the ones associated with phase equilibrium are done in the exterior loop. The solubility of carbon dioxide has been predicted by the optimized parameters of the model in the temperature range of 308.2–368.2 K. It has been calculated that the absolute average relative deviations of the model are 16.65, 19.33, 28.91 and 19.99 in the calculation of partial pressure of carbon dioxide in various loadings at the temperatures of 308.2, 328.2, 343.2 and 368.2 K.

Abstract
The group contribution SAFT-γ Mie EoS is based on the statistical associating fluid theory for fused heteronuclear molecules. While the chain term of the model has been modified to account for the new functional group-specific parameters, it does not impose a bonding order to these functional groups, only considering intergroup interactions in the monomer reference fluid. This leaves the model unable to account for the different physical properties of structural isomers and implicitly introducing modeling bias to species where the molecular structure mimics those used in the parameter regression. In this work, a simple but physically meaningful modification to the chain term in SAFT-γ Mie is proposed that accounts for the number of intergroup bonds, thereby encoding structural information in the model, without introducing an additional regressed parameter. The resulting structural SAFT-γ Mie (s-SAFT-γ Mie) requires reparameterization of the group parameters, which we present for linear and branched alkanes (CH3, CH2, CH, and C groups) here. Following an identical parameterization procedure to the original model, validation showed that the modification actually improves prediction accuracy for linear alkanes while addressing the original inability of the framework to distinguish between structural isomers. The good predictive performance seen in this work, for both pure component and mixture properties, lays a good foundation for expansion to other functional groups in future work.

Abstract
In this work, polar soft-Statistical Associating Fluid Theory (SAFT) was used in a systematic manner to quantify the influence of polar interactions on the phase equilibria, interfacial, and excess properties of binary mixtures. The theory was first validated with available molecular simulation data and then used to isolate the effect of polar interactions on the thermodynamic behavior of the mixtures by fixing the polar moment of one component while changing the polar moment of the second component from non-polar to either highly dipolar or quadrupolar, examining 15 different binary mixtures. It was determined that the type and magnitude of polar interactions have direct implications on the vapor-liquid equilibria (VLE), resulting in azeotropy for systems of either dipolar or quadrupolar fluids when mixed with non-polar or low polar strength fluids, while increasing the polar strength of one component shifts the VLE to be more ideal. Additionally, excess properties and interfacial properties such as interfacial tension, density profiles, and relative adsorption at the interface were also examined, establishing distinct enrichment in the case of mixtures with highly quadrupolar fluids. Finally, polar soft-SAFT was applied to describe the thermodynamic behavior of binary mixtures of experimental systems exhibiting various intermolecular interactions (non-polar and polar), not only demonstrating high accuracy and robustness through agreement with experimental data but also providing insights into the effect of polarity on the interfacial properties of the studied mixtures. This work proves the value of having an accurate theory for isolating the effect of polarity, especially for the design of ad hoc polar solvents.

Abstract
Determining unlike-pair interaction parameters, whether for group contribution equation of state or molecular simulations, is a challenge for the prediction of thermodynamic properties. As the number of components and their respective complexity increase, it becomes impractical to fit all the unlike interactions. Lorentz-Berthelot combining rules work well for systems, where the main interactions are dispersion forces, but they do not account for electrostatics. In this work, we derive predictive combining rules within the SAFT-γ-Mie framework. In the resulting model, the unlike-pair interactions account for the effect of ionization energies, partial charges, dipole moments, and quadrupole moments. We then estimate these properties for molecular fragments using density functional theory calculations and demonstrate their use to obtain realistic cross-interaction energies without the need for experimental data. An open-source python package, Multipole Approach to Predictively Scale Cross-Interactions, is included to facilitate use of the methods presented in this work. A good qualitative agreement was obtained for all phase equilibria calculations of binary mixtures containing carbon dioxide with propane, hexane, benzene, and water, as well as mixtures of hexane and benzene. Finally, we discuss future improvements to our methodology, including the use of physical insights when fitting self-interaction parameters.

Abstract
We propose a new first-order perturbation theory that provides a near-quantitative description of the thermodynamics of simple fluids. The theory is based on the ansatz that the Helmholtz free energy is bounded below by a first-order Mayer-f expansion. Together with the rigorous upper bound provided by a first-order u-expansion, this brackets the actual free energy between an upper and (effective) lower bound that can both be calculated based on first-order perturbation theory. This is of great practical use. Here, the two bounds are combined into an interpolation scheme for the free energy. The scheme exploits the fact that a first-order Mayer-f perturbation theory is exact in the low-density limit, whereas the accuracy of a first-order u-expansion grows when density increases. This allows an interpolation between the lower "f"-bound at low densities and the upper "u" bound at higher liquid-like densities. The resulting theory is particularly well behaved. Using a density-dependent interpolating function of only two adjustable parameters, we obtain a very accurate representation of the full fluid-phase behavior of a Lennard-Jones fluid. The interpolating function is transferable to other intermolecular potential types, which is here shown for the Mie m-6 family of fluids. The extension to mixtures is simple and accurate without requiring any dependence of the interpolating function on the composition of the mixture.

Abstract
This study gives an assessment of the predictive capability of classical density functional theory (DFT) for adsorption processes of pure substances and mixtures of spherical and nonspherical molecular species. A Helmholtz energy functional based on the perturbed-chain statistical associating fluid theory (PC-SAFT) is applied to calculate isotherms and selectivities of multicomponent adsorption. In order to unambiguously assess the accuracy of the DFT model, we conduct molecular simulations. Monte Carlo (MC) simulations are performed in the grand canonical ensemble using the transition matrix. Two types of systems are studied: a model system, where fluid-fluid and solid-fluid interactions are defined as (single-site) Lennard-Jones interactions, and a more realistic methane-n-butane mixture in a graphite-like pore. Differences between a slit-shaped and a cylindrical pore geometry are examined for the model system. Adsorption isotherms and selectivities obtained from DFT calculations and MC simulations are found in very good agreement, particularly at high pressures. Capillary condensation observed along adsorption isotherms containing n-butane was accurately predicted, both, in equilibrium pressure and in density-increase. Comparisons with results from the ideal adsorbed solution theory are presented, confirming powerful predictions of the DFT approach.

Abstract
The examples of phase equilibria in binary systems, solid/liquid (SLE), liquid/liquid (LLE), vapor/liquid (VLE), as well as liquid/liquid equilibria in ternary systems mainly containing ionic liquids (ILs), or the infragrance materials, or pharmaceuticals with molecular organic solvents, such as an alcohol, or water, or hydrocarbons, are presented. The most popular correlation methods of the experimental phase equilibrium data are presented, related to the excess Gibbs free energy models such as Wilson, universal-quasichemical, UNIQUAC and non-random two-liquid model, NRTL as well as several popular theories for the modeling of the phase equilibria and excess molar enthalpy, HE in binary or ternary mixtures are presented: the group contribution method (Mod. UNIFAC) and modified UNIFAC model for pharmaceuticals and lattice theory based on non-random hydrogen bonding (NRHB). The SLE, LLE, or VLE and HE of these systems may be described by the Perturbed-Chain Polar Statistical Associating Fluid Theory (PC-SAFT), or a Conductor-like Screening Model for Real Solvents (COSMO-RS). The examples of the application of ILs as extractants for the separation of aromatic hydrocarbons from alkanes, sulfur compounds from alkanes, alkenes from alkanes, ethylbenzene from styrene, butan-1-ol from water phase, or 2-phenylethanol (PEA) from water are discussed on the basis of previously published data. The first information about the selectivity of extrahent for separation can be obtained from the measurements of the limiting activity coefficient measurements by the gas–liquid chromatography technique. This review outlines the main research work carried out over the last few years on direct measurements of phase equilibria, or HE and limiting activity coefficients, the possibility of thermodynamic modeling with emphasis on recent research achievements and potential for future research.

Abstract
This study demonstrates the capability of the density functional theory (DFT) formalism to predict contact angles and density profiles of model fluids and of real substances in good quantitative agreement with molecular simulations and experimental data. The DFT problem is written in cylindrical coordinates, and the solid-fluid interactions are defined as external potentials toward the fluid phase. Monte Carlo (MC) molecular simulations are conducted in order to assess the density profiles resulting from the Helmholtz energy functional used in the DFT formalism. Good quantitative agreement between DFT predictions and MC results for Lennard-Jones and ethane nanodroplets is observed, both for density profiles and for contact angles. That comparison suggests, first, that the Helmholtz energy functional proposed in a previous study [ Sauer , E. ; Gross , J. Ind. Eng. Chem. Res. 56 , 2017 , 4119 - 4135 ] is suitable for three-phase contact lines and, second, that Lagrange multipliers can be used to constrain the number of molecules, similar to a canonical ensemble. Experiments of sessile droplets on solid surfaces are performed to assess whether a real solid with its microscopic roughness can be described through a simple model potential. Comparison of DFT results to experimental data is done for a Teflon surface because Teflon can be regarded as a substrate exhibiting only attractive interactions of van der Waals type. It is shown that the real solid can be described as a perfectly planar solid with effective solvent-to-solid interactions, defined through a single adjustable parameter for the solid. Subsequent predictions for the contact angle of eight solvents, including polar components such as water, are found in very good agreement to experimental data using simple Berthelot-Lorentz combining rules. For the eight investigated solvents, we find mean absolute deviations of 3.77°.

Abstract
Homogeneous droplet nucleation has been studied for almost a century but has not yet been fully understood. In this work, we used the density gradient theory (DGT) and considered the influence of capillary waves (CWs) on the predicted size-dependent surface tensions and nucleation rates for selected n-alkanes. The DGT model was completed by an equation of state (EoS) based on the perturbed-chain statistical associating fluid theory and compared to the classical nucleation theory and the Peng-Robinson EoS. It was found that the critical clusters are practically free of CWs because they are so small that even the smallest wavelengths of CWs do not fit into their finite dimensions. The CWs contribute to the entropy of the system and thus decrease the surface tension. A correction for the effect of CWs on the surface tension is presented. The effect of the different EoSs is relatively small because by a fortuitous coincidence their predictions are similar in the relevant range of critical cluster sizes. The difference of the DGT predictions to the classical nucleation theory computations is important but not decisive. Of the effects investigated, the most pronounced is the suppression of CWs which causes a sizable decrease of the predicted nucleation rates. The major difference between experimental nucleation rate data and theoretical predictions remains in the temperature dependence. For normal alkanes, this discrepancy is much stronger than observed, e.g., for water. Theoretical corrections developed here have a minor influence on the temperature dependency. We provide empirical equations correcting the predicted nucleation rates to values comparable with experiments.

Abstract
The statistical associating fluid theory of variable range employing a Mie potential (SAFT-VR-Mie) proposed by Lafitte et al. (J. Chem Phys. 2013, 139, 154504) is one of the latest versions of the SAFT family. This particular version has been shown to have a remarkable capability to connect experimental determinations, theoretical calculations, and molecular simulations results. However, the theoretical development restricts the model to chains of beads connected in a linear fashion. In this work, the capabilities of the SAFT-VR Mie equation of state for modeling phase equilibria are extended for the case of planar ring compounds. This modification proposed replaces the Helmholtz energy of chain formation by an empirical contribution based on a parallelism to the second-order thermodynamic perturbation theory for hard sphere trimers. The proposed expression is given in terms of an extra parameter, χ, that depends on the number of beads, ms, and the geometry of the ring. The model is used to describe the phase equilibrium for planar ring compounds formed of Mie isotropic segments for the cases of ms equals to 3, 4, 5 (two configurations), and 7 (two configurations). The resulting molecular model is further parametrized, invoking a corresponding states principle resulting in sets of parameters that can be used indistinctively in theoretical calculations or in molecular simulations without any further refinements. The extent and performance of the methodology has been exemplified by predicting the phase equilibria and vapor pressure curves for aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, hexafluorobenzene, toluene), heterocyclic molecules (2,5-dimethylfuran, sulfolane, tetrahydro-2H-pyran, tetrahydrofuran), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (naphthalene, pyrene, anthracene, pentacene, and coronene). An important aspect of the theory is that the parameters of the model can be used directly in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to calculate equilibrium phase properties and interfacial tensions with an accuracy that rivals other coarse grained and united atom models, for example, liquid densities, are predicted, with a maximum absolute average deviation of 3% from both the theory and the MD simulations, while the interfacial tension is predicted, with a maximum absolute average of 8%. The extension to mixtures is exemplified by considering a binary system of hexane (chain fluid) and tetrahydro-2H-pyran (ring fluid).

Abstract
Thermodynamic principles have been applied to enzyme-catalyzed reactions since the beginning of the 1930s in an attempt to understand metabolic pathways. Currently, thermodynamics is also applied to the design and analysis of biotechnological processes. The key thermodynamic quantity is the Gibbs energy of reaction, which must be negative for a reaction to occur spontaneously. However, the application of thermodynamic feasibility studies sometimes yields positive Gibbs energies of reaction even for reactions that are known to occur spontaneously, such as glycolysis. This article reviews the application of thermodynamics in enzyme-catalyzed reactions. It summarizes the basic thermodynamic relationships used for describing the Gibbs energy of reaction and also refers to the nonuniform application of these relationships in the literature. The review summarizes state-of-the-art approaches that describe the influence of temperature, pH, electrolytes, solvents, and concentrations of reacting agents on the Gibbs energy of reaction and, therefore, on the feasibility and yield of biological reactions.

Abstract
A simple model of dimerizing hard spheres with highly nontrivial fluid-solid phase behavior is proposed and studied using the recently proposed resummed thermodynamic perturbation theory for central force (RTPT-CF) associating potentials. The phase diagram has the fluid branch of the fluid-solid coexistence curve located at temperatures lower than those of the solid branch. This unusual behavior is related to the strong dependence of the system excluded volume on the temperature, which for the model at hand decreases with increasing temperature. This effect can be also seen for a wide family of fluid models with an effective interaction that combines short range attraction and repulsion at a larger distance. We expect that for sufficiently high repulsive barrier, such systems may show similar phase behavior.

Abstract
An analytical expression for the Laplace transform of the radial distribution function of a mixture of hard-sphere chains of arbitrary segment size and chain length is used to rigorously formulate the first-order Barker-Henderson perturbation theory for the contribution of the segment-segment dispersive interactions into thermodynamics of the Lennard-Jones chain mixtures. Based on this approximation, a simple variant of the statistical associating fluid theory is proposed and used to predict properties of several mixtures of chains of different lengths and segment sizes. The theory treats the dispersive interactions more rigorously than the conventional theories and provides means for more accurate description of dispersive interactions in the mixtures of highly asymmetric components.
