Abstract
While several group contribution method (GCM) models have been developed in recent years for the prediction of ionic liquid (IL) properties, some challenges exist in their effective application. Firstly, the models have been developed and tested based on different datasets; therefore, direct comparison based on reported statistical measures is not reliable. Secondly, many of the existing models are limited in the range of ILs for which they can be used due to the lack of functional group parameters. In this paper, we examine two of the most diverse GCMs for the estimation of IL melting point; a key property in the selection and design of ILs for materials and energy applications. A comprehensive database consisting of over 1300 data points for 933 unique ILs, has been compiled and used to critically evaluate the two GCMs. One of the GCMs has been refined by introducing new functional groups and reparametrized to give improved performance for melting point estimation over a wider range of ILs. This work will aid in the targeted design of ILs for materials and energy applications.

Abstract
Aqueous solutions of ionic liquids have unique mixing states. Fluctuations are useful for understanding the inhomogeneity of the mixing states. In this study, an aqueous solution of tetrabutylphosphonium trifluoroacetate, ([P4,4,4,4]CF3COO), which exhibits a lower-critical-solution-temperature-type phase transition, was investigated. Focussing on the concentration and temperature range near the critical point, the fluctuations were evaluated by combining three kinds of experimentally obtained data: small-angle X-ray scattering intensity, partial molar volumes, and isothermal compressibility. Using Kirkwood–Buff integrals, individual density fluctuations of water and [P4,4,4,4]CF3COO were calculated, and these suggested that a large number of water molecules hydrated [P4,4,4,4]CF3COO ion pairs, and the hydrated ion pairs aggregated near the critical point. The relationship between the mesoscopic fluctuations and the macroscopic phase transition was clarified by drawing counter maps of the fluctuations in the phase diagrams.

Abstract
In the last three years, our research follows two main issues, defined by the slogans: ?Green Meets Toxic? and ?Green Meets Green?. The first issue considers the potential use of ambient friendly solvents for toxic organic compounds of industrial and practical importance. The other is related to liquid phase behavior in solutions of ecologically sustainable substances. The ?Green? solvents studied are: ionic liquids, liquid poly(ethylene glycol), glycerol and 1,2 and 1,3-propanediol.
