Emulsion Stability in the Presence of Nonionic Surfactant Micelles: Role of Micellar Ordering and Ostwald Ripening

Ostwald ripening, the dominant mechanism of droplet size growth for an O/W nanoemulsion at high surfactant concentrations, depends on micelles in the water phase and high aqueous solubility of oil, especially for spontaneously formed nanoemulsions. In our study, O/W nanoemulsions were formed spontaneously by mixing a water phase with an oil phase containing fatty alcohol polyoxypropylene polyoxyethylene ether (APE). By monitoring periodically the droplet size of the nanoemulsions via dynamic light scattering, we demonstrated that the formed O/W nanoemulsions are stable against Ostwald ripening, i.e., droplet growth. In contrast, the nanoemulsion droplets grew with the addition of micelles, demonstrating the pivotal role of the presence of micelles in the water phase in the occurrence of Ostwald ripening. The influence of the initial phase of APE, the oil or water phase in which APE is present, on the micelle formation is discussed by the partition coefficient and interfacial adsorption of APE between the oil and water phase using a surface and interfacial tensiometer. In addition, the spontaneously formed O/W nanoemulsion, which is stable against Ostwald ripening, can be used as a nanocarrier for the delivery of water-insoluble pesticides. These results provide a novel approach for the preparation of stable nanoemulsions and contribute to elucidating the mechanism of instability of nanoemulsions.

CMC determination using isothermal titration calorimetry for five industrially significant non-ionic surfactants

Surfactants are used in a vast array of products including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and household formulations. From an industrial perspective, non-ionic surfactants are ideal for inclusion within such products as they are non-toxic, simple to formulate and economic to use. This study considers five non-ionic surfactants (Tween 20, Tween 80, Crodasol, Croduret and Etocas 35) to determine the critical micellar concentration (CMC) for each using isothermal titration calorimetry, thus avoiding issues regarding poor accuracy found with other techniques. Furthermore, this methodology has not previously been applied to this group of surfactants. For the most commonly used non-ionics (Tween 20 and Tween 80) a further study was undertaken to consider the influence of surfactant purity on the CMC determined, using standard grade (Tween 20 and 80), high purity (Tween 20 HP and Tween 80 HP) and Super Refined (SR PS20 and SR PS80). Results permitted calculation of the CMC for the surfactants whereupon the values were determined to range from 1.0 mM for Tween 20 HP to 2.9 mM for Tween 80 HP. Such information regarding the CMC event is useful from a formulation perspective as it can ensure that the most optimum concentration of surfactant is included within a formulation to maximize its efficacy.

DNA-Coated Functional Oil Droplets

Many industrial soft materials include oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions at the core of their formulations. By using tuneable interface stabilizing agents, such emulsions can self-assemble into complex structures. DNA has been used for decades as a thermoresponsive, highly specific binding agent between hard and, recently, soft colloids. Up until now, emulsion droplets functionalized with DNA had relatively low coating densities and were expensive to scale up. Here, a general O/W DNA-coating method using functional nonionic amphiphilic block copolymers, both diblock and triblock, is presented. The hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) ends of the surfactants are functionalized with azides, allowing for efficient, dense, and controlled coupling of dibenzocyclooctane-functionalized DNA to the polymers through a strain-promoted alkyne-azide click reaction. The protocol is readily scalable due to the triblock's commercial availability. Different production methods (ultrasonication, microfluidics, and membrane emulsification) are used with different oils (hexadecane and silicone oil) to produce functional droplets in various size ranges (submicron, ∼20 and >50 μm), showcasing the generality of the protocol. Thermoreversible submicron emulsion gels, hierarchical "raspberry" droplets, and controlled droplet release from a flat DNA-coated surface are demonstrated. The emulsion stability and polydispersity is evaluated using dynamic light scattering and optical microscopy. The generality and simplicity of the method opens up new applications in soft matter, biotechnological research, and industrial advances.

Droplet confinement and leakage: Causes, underlying effects, and amelioration strategies

The applicability of droplet-based microfluidic systems to many research fields stems from the fact that droplets are generally considered individual and self-contained reaction vessels. This study demonstrates that, more often than not, the integrity of droplets is not complete, and depends on a range of factors including surfactant type and concentration, the micro-channel surface, droplet storage conditions, and the flow rates used to form and process droplets. Herein, a model microfluidic device is used for droplet generation and storage to allow the comparative study of forty-four different oil/surfactant conditions. Assessment of droplet stability under these conditions suggests a diversity of different droplet failure modes. These failure modes have been classified into families depending on the underlying effect, with both numerical and qualitative models being used to describe the causative effect and to provide practical solutions for droplet failure amelioration in microfluidic systems.

Amphiphilic ionic liquid stabilizing palladium nanoparticles for highly efficient catalytic hydrogenation

The highly water-soluble palladium nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by using the amphiphilic poly(ethylene glycol)-functionalized dicationic imidazolium-based ionic liquid (C(12)Im-PEG IL) as a stabilizing agent. The aqueous dispersed palladium NPs in the range of 1.9 ± 0.3 nm were observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The physicochemical properties of C(12)Im-PEG IL in aqueous phase have been characterized by electrical conductivity, surface tension and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements. It was demonstrated that the amphiphilic ionic liquid can form micelles above its critical micelle concentration (CMC) in aqueous solution and the micelles played a crucial role in stabilizing the palladium NPs and thus promoted catalytic hydrogenation. Furthermore, the dicationic ionic liquid can also act as a gemini surfactant and generated emulsion between hydrophobic substrates and the catalytic aqueous phase during the reaction. The aqueous dispersed palladium NPs showed efficient activity for the catalytic hydrogenation of various substrates under very mild conditions and the stabilizing Pd(0) nanoparticles (NPs) can be reused at least eight times with complete conservation of activity.
