Abstract
We introduce the community to the remarkable fact that two significant discoveries in the field of organic photoswitches are associated to the Rubizhne (Rubezhnoe) branch of the Research Institute of Organic Intermediates and Dyes during the last century. The institute in Rubizhne was a place where researchers of various nationalities carried out studies of organic dyes for printing and textiles. These efforts resulted in the discoveries of photoswitchable hemithioindigos by M. A. Mostoslavskii and peri-aryloxyquinones by Yu. E. Gerasimenko. Herein, based on the available literature, we reconstruct the circumstances surrounding these outstanding findings and highlight the unique role of the Rubizhne institute as a research center. Furthermore, we demonstrate the impact of the results of the Rubizhne researchers on the field of photoswitchable molecules.

Abstract
Emerging applications of photochromic compounds demand new molecular designs that can be inspired by some long-known yet currently forgotten classes of photoswitches. In the present review, we remind the community about Peri-AryloxyQuinones (PAQs) and their unique photoswitching behavior originally discovered more than 50 years ago. At the heart of this phenomenon is the light-induced migration of an aromatic moiety (arylotropy) in peri-aryloxy-substituted quinones resulting in ana-quinones. PAQs feature absorbance of both isomers in the visible spectral region, photochromism in the amorphous and crystalline state, and thermal stability of the photogenerated ana-isomer. Particularly noticeable is the high sensitivity of the ana-isomer towards nucleophiles in solution. In addition to the mechanism of molecular photochromism and the underlaying structure-switch relationships, we analyze potential applications and prospects of aryloxyquinones in optically switchable materials and devices. Due to their ability to efficiently photoswitch in the solid state, PAQs are indeed attractive candidates for such materials and devices, including electronics (optically controllable circuits, switches, transistors, memories, and displays), porous crystalline materials, crystalline actuators, photoactivated sensors, and many more. This review is intended to serve as a guide for researchers who wish to use photoswitchable PAQs in the development of new photocontrollable materials, devices, and processes.

Abstract
Coupling of photoswitching with dynamic covalent chemistry enables control of the formation and cleavage of covalent bonds by light irradiation. peri-Aryloxyanthraquinones feature an exclusive ability to switch electrophilicity by interconversion between para- and ana-quinone isomers, which was used for the first time for the implementation of a dynamic C-O bond. Photogenerated ana-isomers undergo a concerted oxa-Michael addition of phenols to give hitherto unknown 4-hydroxy-10,10-diaryloxyanthracen-9-ones. These species were found to be in equilibrium with the corresponding ana-quinones, thus forming a dynamic covalent system of a new type. Withdrawal of the colored ana-quinones from the equilibria by visible light irradiation resulted in two para-quinones with "locked" aryloxy groups.

Abstract
Herein, we report a novel strategy toward non-volatile optical memory with high-contrast, high-speed recording, and non-destructive readout capability based on the cooperative out-of-plane orientation of a fluorescent dye doped into azobenzene liquid crystalline polymer film. By employing the out-of-plane orientation switching upon irradiation with UV light and thermal heating, high-contrast turn-on fluorescence switching was successfully achieved and the optical recording was demonstrated with non-destructive fluorescence readout capability. Furthermore, the recording speed and the fluorescence on/off contrast in the present system were dramatically improved compared to the previous in-plane orientation mode.

Abstract
Porphyrins are highly conjugated molecules that perform wide variety of functions in biological systems. They absorb strongly in the visible region and they are excellent fluorophores that emit in the visible region. If the meso or β positions of porphyrins are properly substituted, emission in the NIR region is facilitated. The fluorescence property of porphyrins can be used in sensing applications. Here, we report the synthesis of a water soluble porphyrin that emits in the NIR region and this molecule is used in the fluorescent determination of cadmium ion, which is an environmental pollutant and affects the health of living organisms adversely. 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)porphyrin (THMPP), which is water soluble was synthesised from 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)porphyrin (TMPP) by partial demethylation, which in turn was synthesized by mixture acid method. The donor-acceptor interaction of THMPP-Cd2+ system displays a dynamic fluorescence quenching through the electron transfer (ET) mechanism. Developed method showed a linear response toward Cd2+ in the concentration range of 0.25 μM to 2 μM. The limit of detection was found to be 0.1499 μM. THMPP exhibited excellent selectivity towards Cd (II) in presence of other metal ions like Hg2+, Mn2+, Mg2+, Co2+ in 1:100, Zn2+, Cu2+, Ni2+ in 1:10 and Na+, K+ in 1:1 M ratio.

Abstract
A 1-[2-methyl-5-(4-tetraphenylporphyrinphenyl)-3-thienyl)-2-[2-methyl-3-thienyl]cyclopentene combined by 3,3[Formula: see text]-(1-cyclopentene-1,2-diyl)bis(5-chloro-2-methyl)thiophene and tetraphenylporphyrin can transform between the open isomer and the closed isomer upon the irradiation of UV or visible light. Thus they can be utilized to write binary data. Furthermore, the open form can emit luminescence but the closed cannot while irradiated by another light that cannot cause optical chemical reactions. Therefore, data can be read out without damage.

Abstract
Two molecules in which the intensity of shorter-wavelength fluorescence from a strong fluorophore is modulated by longer-wavelength irradiation of an attached merocyanine-spirooxazine reverse photochromic moiety have been synthesized and studied. This unusual fluorescence behavior is the result of quenching of fluorophore fluorescence by the thermally stable, open, zwitterionic form of the spirooxazine, whereas the photogenerated closed, spirocyclic form has no effect on the fluorophore excited state. The population ratio of the closed and open forms of the spirooxazine is controlled by the intensity of the longer-wavelength modulated light. Both square wave and sine wave modulation were investigated. Because the merocyanine-spirooxazine is an unusual reverse photochrome with a thermally stable long-wavelength absorbing form and a short-wavelength absorbing photogenerated isomer with a very short lifetime, this phenomenon does not require irradiation of the molecules with potentially damaging ultraviolet light, and rapid modulation of fluorescence is possible. Molecules demonstrating these properties may be useful in fluorescent probes, as their use can discriminate between probe fluorescence and various types of adventitious "autofluorescence" from other molecules in the system being studied.

Abstract
Photoactivatable fluorophores switch from a nonemissive to an emissive state upon illumination at an activating wavelength and then emit after irradiation at an exciting wavelength. The interplay of such activation and excitation events can be exploited to switch fluorescence on in a defined region of space at a given interval of time. In turn, the spatiotemporal control of fluorescence translates into the opportunity to implement imaging and spectroscopic schemes that are not possible with conventional fluorophores. Specifically, photoactivatable fluorophores permit the monitoring of dynamic processes in real time as well as the reconstruction of images with subdiffraction resolution. These promising applications can have a significant impact on the characterization of the structures and functions of biomolecular systems. As a result, strategies to implement mechanisms for fluorescence photoactivation with synthetic fluorophores are particularly valuable. In fact, a number of versatile operating principles have already been identified to activate the fluorescence of numerous members of the main families of synthetic dyes. These methods are based on either the irreversible cleavage of covalent bonds or the reversible opening and closing of rings. This paper overviews the fundamental mechanisms that govern the behavior of these photoresponsive systems, illustrates structural designs for fluorescence photoactivation, and provides representative examples of photoactivatable fluorophores in actions.

Abstract
The stringent limitations imposed by diffraction on the spatial resolution of fluorescence microscopes demand the identification of viable strategies to switch fluorescence under optical control. In this context, the photoinduced and reversible transformations of photochromic compounds are particularly valuable. In fact, these molecules can be engineered to regulate the emission intensities of complementary fluorophores in response to optical stimulations. On the basis of this general design logic, we assembled a functional molecular construct consisting of a borondipyrromethene fluorophore and a nitrospiropyran photochrome and demonstrated that the emission of the former can be modulated with the interconversion of the latter. This fluorophore-photochrome dyad, however, has a slow switching speed and poor fatigue resistance. To improve both parameters, we developed a new family of photochromic switches based on the photoinduced opening and thermal closing of an oxazine ring. These compounds switch back and forth between ring-closed and -open isomers on nanosecond-microsecond timescales and tolerate thousands of switching cycles with no sign of degradation. In addition, the attachment of appropriate chromophoric fragments to their switchable oxazine ring can be exploited to either deactivate or activate fluorescence reversibly in response to illumination with a pair of exciting beams. Specifically, we assembled three dyads, each based on either a borondipyrromethene or a coumarin fluorophore and an oxazine photochrome, and modulated their fluorescence in a few microseconds with outstanding fatigue resistance. The unique photochemical and photophysical properties of our fluorophore-photochrome dyads can facilitate the development of switchable fluorophores for superresolution imaging and, ultimately, provide valuable molecular probes for the visualization of biological samples on the nanometer level.

Abstract
[(ttpy)Os(tpy-ph-TPH(3)(+))](3+) (2), [(ttpy)Os(tpy-xy-TPH(3)(+))](3+) (3), [(ttpy)Os(tpy-ph-TPH(2)(NO(2))(+))](3+) (4), and [(ttpy)Os(tpy-xy-TPH(2)(NO(2))(+))](3+) (5) are a series of dyads made of an Os(II) bis-tpy complex (tpy = 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine) as the photosensitizer (P) and 2,4,6-triarylpyridinium group (TP(+)) as the electron acceptor (A). These dyads were designed to form charge-separated states (CSS) upon light excitation. Together with analogous Ru(II) complexes (7-10), they have been synthesized and fully characterized. We describe herein how intramolecular photoinduced processes are affected when the electron-accepting strength of A (by nitro-derivatization of TP(+)) and/or the steric hindrance about intercomponent linkage (by replacing a phenyl spacer by a xylyl one) are changed. Electronic absorption and electrochemical behavior revealed that (i) chemical substitution of TP(+) (i.e., TP(+)-NO(2)) has no sizable influence on P-centered electronic features, (ii) reduction processes located on TP(+) depend on the intercomponent tilt angle. Concerning excited-state properties, photophysical investigation evidenced that phosphorescence of P is actually quenched in dyads 4 and 5 only. Ultrafast transient absorption (TA) experiments allowed attributing the quenching in conformationally locked dyad 5 to oxidative electron transfer (ET) from the (3)MLCT level to the TP(+)-NO(2) acceptor (k(el) = 1.1 x 10(9) s(-)(1)). For 4, geometrically unlocked, the (3)MLCT state was shown to first rapidly equilibrate (reversible energy transfer; k(eq) approximately 2 x 10(9) s(-)(1)) with a ligand centered triplet state before undergoing CSS formation. Thus, the pivotal role of conformation in driving excited-state decay pathways is demonstrated. Also, inner P structural planarization as a relaxation mode of the (3)MLCT states has been inferred from TA experiments.

Abstract
Photochromic compounds change their color under illumination. In most instances, a colorless state switches to a colored one upon ultraviolet irradiation. The photogenerated species reverts to the original one either by thermal means or upon visible irradiation. These reversible transformations are accompanied by pronounced structural and electronic modifications, which often alter the ability of the photochromic compound to emit light. Under these conditions, the photoinduced and reversible interconversion of the colorless and colored states results in the modulation of the fluorescence intensity. Alternatively, fluorescence modulation can be implemented by attaching covalently a fluorescent group to a photochromic compound. Photoinduced changes in the dipole moment or conjugation of the photochromic component can then be designed to alter the emissive behavior of the fluorescent appendage. Similarly, photoinduced shifts in the redox potential or absorption wavelength of the photochromic fragment can be engineered to activate electron or energy, respectively, transfer pathways. Both processes can efficiently quench the fluorescence of the emissive component. Furthermore, the reversible absorption changes of a photochromic compound can effectively filter the emission of a compatible, but separate, fluorophore as long as the emission bands of the latter overlap the absorption bands of one of the two states of the former. When this design requirement is satisfied, fluorescence modulation can be achieved even if the two functional components are operated in distinct environments. Thus, either one of these ingenious mechanisms can be exploited to regulate the emissive behavior of collections of molecules in solution or even in rigid matrixes. In fact, the investigation of these fascinating systems can eventually lead to novel photoresponsive materials for photonic applications, while contributing to advance our basic understanding of the photochemical and photophysical properties of organic compounds.

Abstract
A novel photochromic diarylethene, 1,2-bis{2-ethyl-5-[2-(1,3-dioxolane)]-3-thienyl}perfluorocyclopentene (BEDTP), was synthesized and its structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Its photochromic and fluorescent properties were also investigated. The results showed that this compound exhibited reversible photochromism, changing from colorless to magenta after irradiation with UV light both in solution and in the crystalline phase. In hexane solution, the open-ring isomer of BEDTP exhibited relatively strong fluorescence at 400 nm when excited at 282 nm. The fluorescence intensity decreased along with the photochromism upon irradiation with 254 nm light and its closed-ring isomer showed almost no fluorescence.
