Dissociation Dynamics and Stability of Cyclic Alkoxy Radicals and Alkoxide Anions

Identification of Isoprene Oxidation Reaction Products via Anion Photoelectron Spectroscopy

We present a study on the oxidation of isoprene under several different conditions that may model both atmospheric and combustion chemistry. Anions, formed by passing isoprene/oxidant gas mixtures through a pulsed discharge generating a range of species, are separated via mass spectrometry and characterized by anion photoelectron (PE) spectroscopy supported by computations. Specifically, a UV-irradiated isoprene/O₂ mixture, which additionally produces O₃, and an isoprene/O₂/H₂ mixture, which generates ^•OH when passed through the discharge, were sampled. The mass spectra of ions generated under both conditions show the production of intact molecular ions, ion-molecule complexes (e.g., O₂^-, O₄^-, and O₂^-·isoprene), and singly deprotonated species (e.g., deprotonated isoprene, C₅H₇^-). In addition, both smaller and oxidized fragments are observed using both gas mixtures, though relative abundances differ. From the UV-irradiated isoprene/O₂ gas mixture, additional intact molecular products of reactions initiated by ozonolysis of isoprene, methylglyoxal, and dimethylglyoxal were observed. Fragmentation and oxidation of isoprene observed in both gas mixtures included species with m/z 39, 53, 67, 69, and 83 that we attribute to a series of alkyl- and alkenoxide-based anions. The coexistence of intact molecules and complexes with fragments and reaction products demonstrates the versatility of this ion source as a simple and efficient anion formation method for studying species that may be relevant in atmospheric and combustion chemistry.

Photoelectron-photofragment coincidence studies of the tert-butoxide anion (CH3)3CO((-)), the carbanion isomer (CH3)2CH2COH((-)), and corresponding radicals

A study of the photodetachment and dissociative photodetachment (DPD) of the C(4)H(9)O(-) isomers tert-butoxide, (CH(3))(3)CO(-), and the α-hydroxy carbanion (CH(3))(2)C(CH(2))OH(-) is reported. Photoelectron-photofragment coincidence spectroscopy was used to study these anions at 387, 537, and 600 nm. Supported by CBS-QB3 ab initio calculations, the product mass and translational energy distributions were found to be consistent with dissociation of either highly excited (CH3)(3)CO radicals or (CH(3))(2)C(CH2)OH alkylhydroxy radicals. Vibrationally resolved photoelectron spectra of stable radicals at 537 and 600 nm in conjunction with Franck-Condon simulations were used to assign the dominant channel to tert-butoxide ((CH(3)3)CO(-)) anions thermalized to a vibrational temperature of 550 K. DPD is assigned to highly vibrationally excited radicals produced by photodetachment of unrelaxed tert-butoxide products formed at an effective source temperature of 1400 K. The higher energy carbanion was found to be a minor channel and was not observed to dissociate. Calculated energetics for photodetachment and DPD of (CH(3))(3)CO(-) and (CH(3))(2)C(CH(2))OH(-) are discussed and compared with the experimental results.

Dissociative photodetachment of the ethoxide anion and stability of the ethoxy radical CH3CH2O•

The ethoxy radical is an important species in combustion chemistry; however, considerable debate regarding the fragmentation pathways exists. In order to examine the stability and dissociation dynamics of the ethoxy radical in the two lowest electronic states, dissociative photodetachment experiments at 3.20 eV were carried out on the ethoxide anion, CH3CH2O(-), and its per-deuterated isotopologue. Production of excited radicals by photodetachment of the alkoxide anion was found to lead to only CH3 + H2CO products, with no indication of the energetically allowed H-loss channel, H + CH3CHO. Ab initio calculations for the anionic and neutral surfaces, including relevant isomerization and dissociation barriers, were carried out using the CBS-QB3 method to aid in interpretation of the data. The energetics observed in the photoelectron-photofragment coincidence spectra indicate that the calculated barrier (0.70 eV) for the process CH3CH2O → CH3 + H2CO and the stability of the CH3CH2O radical relative to those products are upper limits.

Electron detachment dissociation of underivatized chloride-adducted oligosaccharides

Chloride anion attachment has previously been shown to aid determination of saccharide anomeric configuration and generation of linkage information in negative ion post-source decay MALDI tandem mass spectrometry. Here, we employ electron detachment dissociation (EDD) and collision activated dissociation (CAD) for the structural characterization of underivatized oligosaccharides bearing a chloride ion adduct. Both neutral and sialylated oligosaccharides are examined, including maltoheptaose, an asialo biantennary glycan (NA2), disialylacto-N-tetraose (DSLNT), and two LS tetrasaccharides (LSTa and LSTb). Gas-phase chloride-adducted species are generated by negative ion mode electrospray ionization. EDD and CAD spectra of chloride-adducted oligosaccharides are compared to the corresponding spectra for doubly deprotonated species not containing a chloride anion to assess the role of chloride adduction in the stimulation of alternative fragmentation pathways and altered charge locations allowing detection of additional product ions. In all cases, EDD of singly chloridated and singly deprotonated species resulted in an increase in observed cross-ring cleavages, which are essential to providing saccharide linkage information. Glycosidic cleavages also increased in EDD of chloride-adducted oligosaccharides to reveal complementary structural information compared to traditional (non-chloride-assisted) EDD and CAD. Results indicate that chloride adduction is of interest in alternative anion activation methods such as EDD for oligosaccharide structural characterization.

Dissociative photodetachment dynamics of the iodide-aniline cluster

The photodetachment dynamics of the iodide-aniline cluster, I-(C6H5NH2), were investigated using photoelectron-photofragment coincidence spectroscopy at several photon energies between 3.60 and 4.82 eV in concert with density functional theory calculations. Direct photodetachment from the solvated I- chromophore and a wavelength-independent autodetachment process were observed. Autodetachment is attributed to a charge-transfer-to-solvent reaction in which incipient continuum electrons photodetached from I- are temporarily captured by the nascent neutral iodine-aniline cluster configured in the anion geometry. Subsequent dissociation of the neutral cluster removes the stabilization, leading to autodetachment of the excess electron. The dependence of the dissociative photodetachment (DPD) and autodetachment dynamics on the final spin-orbit electronic state of the iodine fragment is characterized. The dissociation dynamics of the neutral fragments correlated with autodetached electrons were found to be identical to the DPD dynamics of the I atom product spin-orbit state closest to threshold at a given photon energy, lending support to the proposed sequential mechanism.

Dissociative Photodetachment Dynamics of Solvated Iodine Cluster Anions

Photoelectron-photofragment coincidence spectroscopy of I- (CO2), I- (NH3), I- (H2O), I- (C6H5NH2), and I- (C6H5OH) clusters was used to study the dissociative photodetachment (DPD) dynamics at 257 nm. Photodetachment from all five clusters was observed to yield bound neutral clusters as well as the DPD products of the iodine atom and the molecular solvent. Photoelectron images and kinetic energy spectra were recorded in coincidence with both the translational energy released between dissociating neutral products and stable neutral clusters. The variation of the photoelectron angular distributions in the clusters was measured, revealing significant perturbations relative to I- for I- (H2O) and I- (C6H5NH2). Product branching ratios for stable versus dissociative photodetachment and photodetachment to the I(2P(3/2)) and I(2P(1/2)) states are reported. The measurements reveal a dependence of the DPD dynamics on the final spin-orbit state of iodine in the cases of I- (C6H5NH2) and I- (CO2) and a threshold detachment process in I- (C6H5NH2).
