Abstract
We report the first examples of metal‐promoted double geminal activation of C(sp3)−H bonds of the N−CH2−N moiety in an imidazole‐type heterocycle, leading to nickel and palladium N‐heterocyclic carbene complexes under mild conditions. Reaction of the new electron‐rich diphosphine 1,3‐bis((di‐tert‐butylphosphaneyl)methyl)‐2,3‐dihydro‐1H‐benzo[d]imidazole (1) with [PdCl2(cod)] occurred in a stepwise fashion, first by single C−H bond activation yielding the alkyl pincer complex [PdCl(PCsp3HP)] (3) with two trans phosphane donors and a covalent Pd−Csp3
bond. Activation of the C−H bond of the resulting α‐methine Csp3
H−M group occurred subsequently when 3 was treated with HCl to yield the NHC pincer complex [PdCl(PCNHCP)]Cl (2). Treatment of 1 with [NiBr2(dme)] also afforded a NHC pincer complex, [NiBr(PCNHCP)]Br (6), but the reactions leading to the double geminal C−H bond activation of the N−CH2−N group were too fast to allow identification or isolation of an intermediate analogous to 3. The determination of six crystal structures, the isolation of reaction intermediates and DFT calculations provided the basis for suggesting the mechanism of the stepwise transformation of a N−CH2−N moiety in the N−CNHC−N unit of NHC pincer complexes and explain the key differences observed between the Pd and Ni chemistries.

Abstract
N‐Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are commonly prepared by deprotonation of azolium salts using strong anionic bases. This reaction is often unselective, yielding alkali metal NHC complexes or dimerized NHCs. Alternatively, free NHCs are obtained by the dechlorination of 2‐chloroazolium salts using electron‐rich phosphines. PPh3, PCy3, and PtBu3 are unsuitable for Cl+ abstraction, while the sterically encumbered tris(1,3‐tert‐butylimidazolidin‐2‐ylidenamino)phosphine 1 selectively removes Cl+ from 2‐chloroazolium salts. Since bulky 1 does not bind to metal complexes, it was used for the preparation of NHC complexes via in situ Cl+ abstraction from 2‐chloroazolium salts. The dechlorination was employed for the site‐selective monometallation with IrI, IrIII, RhI, RhIII, and RuII of a bis‐NHC precursor composed of a 2‐chlorobenzimidazolium and a 2‐chlorobenzimidazole group, followed by the preparation of the heterobimetallic IrIII/PdII complex [18](BF4)2 by a dechlorination/oxidative addition reaction sequence.

Abstract
CAAC precursors 2-chloro-3,3-dimethylindole 1 and 2-chloro-1-ethyl-3,3-dimethylindolium tetrafluoroborate 2BF4 have been prepared and oxidatively added to [M(PPh3 )4 ] (M=Pd, Pt). Salt 2BF4 reacts with [Pd(PPh3 )4 ] in toluene at 25 °C over 4 days to yield complex cis-[3]BF4 featuring an N-ethyl substituted CAAC, two cis-arranged phosphines and a chloro ligand. Compound trans-[3]BF4 was obtained from the same reaction at 80 °C over 1 day. Salt 2BF4 reacts with [Pt(PPh3 )4 ] to give cis-[4]BF4 . The neutral indole derivative 1 adds oxidatively to [Pt(PPh3 )4 ] to give trans-[5] featuring a CAAC ligand with an unsubstituted ring-nitrogen atom. This nitrogen atom has been protonated with py⋅HBF4 to give trans-[6]BF4 bearing a protic CAAC ligand. The PdII complex trans-[7]BF4 bearing a protic CAAC ligand was obtained in a one-pot reaction from 1 and [Pd(PPh3 )4 ] in the presence of py⋅HBF4 .

Abstract
Complexes of metals with N-heterocyclic carbene ligands (M/NHC) are typically considered the systems of choice in homogeneous catalysis due to their stable metal-ligand framework. However, it becomes obvious that even metal species with a strong M-NHC bond can undergo evolution in catalytic systems, and processes of M-NHC bond cleavage are common for different metals and NHC ligands. This review is focused on the main types of the M-NHC bond cleavage reactions and their impact on activity and stability of M/NHC catalytic systems. For the first time, we consider these processes in terms of NHC-connected and NHC-disconnected active species derived from M/NHC precatalysts and classify them as fundamentally different types of catalysts. Problems of rational catalyst design and sustainability issues are discussed in the context of the two different types of M/NHC catalysis mechanisms.

Abstract
Organic ionic compounds, especially those with organic cations, are commonly applied in ionic liquids (ILs), organocatalysts, (a)NHC ligands, ion recognition, and optoelectronic materials. The direct C-H functionalization of organic cations offers valuable opportunities for the rapid assembly of diverse functionalized cations and for their further exploitation in material science applications. This review summarizes the substantial progress that has been made in the C-H functionalization of organic cations from the 1960s to May 2020, including transition metal-mediated/catalyzed C-H alkylation, arylation, and annulation, and photo-induced C-H functionalization. Substrate scopes, limitations, regio-/chemoselectivity, and reaction mechanisms are discussed. In addition, the applications of some new organic functional materials are briefly exemplified. This review also aims to serve as a reminder that much care should be taken when using organic ionic compounds as solvents, because they can behave as reactants that can break up desired coupling reactions.

Abstract
The complexes of Ni, Pd, and Pt with N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) catalyze numerous organic reactions via proposed typical M0/MII catalytic cycles comprising intermediates with the metal center in (0) and (II) oxidation states. In addition, MII/MIV catalytic cycles have been proposed for a number of reactions. The catalytic intermediates in both cycles can suffer decomposition via R-NHC coupling and the side reductive elimination of the NHC ligand and R groups (R = alkyl, aryl, etc.) to give [NHC-R]+ cations. In this study, the relative stabilities of (NHC)MII(R)(X)L and (NHC)MIV(R)(X)3L intermediates (X = Cl, Br, I; L = NHC, pyridine) against R-NHC coupling and other decomposition pathways via reductive elimination reactions were evaluated theoretically. The study revealed that the R-NHC coupling represents the most favorable decomposition pathway for both types of intermediates (MII and MIV), while it is thermodynamically and kinetically more facile for the MIV complexes. The relative effects of the metal M (Ni, Pd, Pt) and ligands L and X on the R-NHC coupling for the MIV complexes were significantly stronger than that for the MII complexes. In particular, for the (NHC)2MIV(Ph)(Br)3 complexes, Ph-NHC coupling was facilitated dramatically from Pt (ΔG = -36.9 kcal mol-1, ΔG≠ = 37.5 kcal mol-1) to Pd (ΔG = -61.5 kcal mol-1, ΔG≠ = 18.3 kcal mol-1) and Ni (ΔG = -80.2 kcal mol-1, ΔG≠ = 4.7 kcal mol-1). For the MII oxidation state of the metal, the bis-NHC complexes (L = NHC) were slightly more kinetically and thermodynamically stable against R-NHC coupling than the mono-NHC complexes (L = pyridine). An inverse relation was observed for the MIV oxidation state of the metal as the (NHC)2MIV(R)(X)3 complexes were kinetically (4.3-15.9 kcal mol-1) and thermodynamically (8.0-23.2 kcal mol-1) significantly less stable than the (NHC)MIV(R)(X)3L (L = pyridine) complexes. For the NiIV and PdIV complexes, additional decomposition pathways via the reductive elimination of the NHC and X ligands to give the [NHC-X]+ cation (X-NHC coupling) or reductive elimination of the X-X molecule were found to be thermodynamically and kinetically probable. Overall, the obtained results demonstrate significant instability of regular Ni/NHC and Pd/NHC complexes (for example, not additionally stabilized by chelation) and high probability to initiate "NHC-free" catalysis in the reactions comprising MIV intermediates.

Abstract
It has recently been shown that palladium-catalyzed reactions with N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands involve R-NHC coupling accompanied by transformation of the molecular catalytic system into the nanoscale catalytic system. An important question appeared in this regard is whether such a change in the catalytic system is irreversible. More specifically, is the reverse nano-to-molecular transformation possible? In view of the paramount significance of this question to the area of catalyst design, we studied the capability of 2-substituted azolium salts to undergo the breakage of C-C bond and exchange substituents on the carbene carbon with corresponding aryl halides in the presence of Pd nanoparticles. The study provides important experimental evidence of possibility of the reversible R-NHC coupling. The observed behavior indicates that the nanosized metal species are capable of reverse transition to molecular species. Such an option, known for phosphine ligands, was previously unexplored for NHC ligands. The present study for the first time demonstrates bidirectional dynamic transitions between the molecular and nanostructured states in Pd/NHC systems. As a unique feature, surprisingly small activation barriers (<18 kcal/mol) and noticeable thermodynamic driving force (-5 to -7 kcal/mol) were calculated for C-C bond oxidative addition to Pd(0) centers in the studied system. The first example of NHC-mediated Pd leaching from metal nanoparticles to solution was observed and formation of Pd/NHC complex in solution was detected by ESI-MS.

[PMID: 31374523 DOI: 10.1016/j.bioorg.2019.103134] [Citation(s) in RCA: 115] [Impact Index Per Article: 23.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 06/18/2019] [Revised: 07/16/2019] [Accepted: 07/18/2019] [Indexed: 11/20/2022]
Abstract
In this work, the synthesis, crystal structure, characterization, and enzyme inhibition effects of the novel a series of 2-aminopyridine liganded Pd(II) N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes were examined. These complexes of the Pd-based were synthesized from PEPPSI complexes and 2-aminopyridine. The novel complexes were characterized by using 13C NMR, 1H NMR, elemental analysis, and FTIR spectroscopy techniques. Also, crystal structures of the two compounds were recorded by using single-crystal X-ray diffraction assay. Also, these complexes were tested toward some metabolic enzymes like α-glycosidase, aldose reductase, butyrylcholinesterase, acetylcholinesterase enzymes, and carbonic anhydrase I, and II isoforms. The novel 2-aminopyridine liganded (NHC)PdI2(2-aminopyridine) complexes (1a-i) showed Ki values of in range of 5.78 ± 0.33-22.51 ± 8.59 nM against hCA I, 13.77 ± 2.21-30.81 ± 4.87 nM against hCA II, 0.44 ± 0.08-1.87 ± 0.11 nM against AChE and 3.25 ± 0.34-12.89 ± 4.77 nM against BChE. Additionally, we studied the inhibition effect of these derivatives on aldose reductase and α-glycosidase enzymes. For these compounds, compound 1d showed maximum inhibition effect against AR with a Ki value of 360.37 ± 55.82 nM. Finally, all compounds were tested for the inhibition of α-glycosidase enzyme, which recorded efficient inhibition profiles with Ki values in the range of 4.44 ± 0.65-12.67 ± 2.50 nM against α-glycosidase.

Abstract
N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) are nowadays ubiquitous and indispensable in many research fields, and it is not possible to imagine modern transition metal and main group element chemistry without the plethora of available NHCs with tailor-made electronic and steric properties. While their suitability to act as strong ligands toward transition metals has led to numerous applications of NHC complexes in homogeneous catalysis, their strong σ-donating and adaptable π-accepting abilities have also contributed to an impressive vitalization of main group chemistry with the isolation and characterization of NHC adducts of almost any element. Formally, NHC coordination to Lewis acids affords a transfer of nucleophilicity from the carbene carbon atom to the attached exocyclic moiety, and low-valent and low-coordinate adducts of the p-block elements with available lone pairs and/or polarized carbon-element π-bonds are able to act themselves as Lewis basic donor ligands toward transition metals. Accordingly, the availability of a large number of novel NHC adducts has not only produced new varieties of already existing ligand classes but has also allowed establishment of numerous complexes with unusual and often unprecedented element-metal bonds. This review aims at summarizing this development comprehensively and covers the usage of N-heterocyclic carbene adducts of the p-block elements as ligands in transition metal chemistry.

Abstract
A well-established oxidative addition of organic halides (R-X) to N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes of palladium(0) leads to formation of (NHC)(R)PdII (X)L species, the key intermediates in a large variety of synthetically useful cross-coupling reactions. Typical consideration of the cross-coupling catalytic cycle is based on the assumption of intrinsic stability of these species, where the subsequent steps involve coordination of the second reacting partner. Thus, high stability of the intermediate (NHC)(R)PdII (X)L species is usually taken for granted. In the present study it is discussed that such intermediates are prone to non-classical R-NHC intramolecular coupling process (R = Me, Ph, Vinyl, Ethynyl) that results in removal of NHC ligand and generation of another type of Pd catalytic system. DFT calculations (BP86, TPSS, PBE1PBE, B3LYP, M06, wB97X-D) clearly show that outcome of R-NHC coupling process is not only determined by chemical nature of the organic substituent R, but also strongly depends on the type of solvent. The reaction is most favorable in polar solvents, whereas the non-polar solvents render the products less stable. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
Abstract
A synthetic route for the selective di- and monochlorination of pyridazine annelated bis(imidazolium) salts at the formamidinium moieties with trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA) is presented. Due to the steric hindrance, the molecular structure of the dichlorobis(imidazolium) salt shows a pronounced torsion from planarity as well as a deviation of the C–Cl bond vectors from the ideal bisecting line of the respective NCN angles such as to avoid each other. The monochlorinated bis(imidazolium) salt is free of steric hindrance and therefore shows less deviation from the parent bis(imidazolium) salt. In the presence of acetate the chloroimidazolium salt acts as a chlorination agent for acetate leading to formation of acetyl chloride and the respective urea.
