Abstract
Multicomponent oxides are intriguing materials in heterogeneous catalysis, and the interface between various components often plays an essential role in oxidations. However, the underlying principles of how the hetero-interface affects the catalytic process remain largely unexplored. Here we report a unique structure design of MnCoOx catalysts by chemical reduction, specifically for ethane oxidation. Part of the Mn ions incorporates with Co oxides to form spinel MnxCo3-xO4, while the rests stay as MnO2 domains to create the MnO2-MnxCo3-xO4 interface. MnCoOx with Mn/Co ratio of 0.5 exhibits an excellent activity and stability up to 1000 h under humid conditions. The synergistic effects between MnO2 and MnxCo3-xO4 are elucidated, in which the C2H6 tends to be adsorbed on the interfacial Co sites and subsequently break the C-H bonds on the reactive lattice O of MnO2 layer. Findings from this study provide valuable insights for the rational design of efficient catalysts for alkane combustion.

Abstract
Activating molecular oxygen under mild conditions is highly important for developing advanced green technologies and for understanding the origin and running of life as well, which still remains a challenge. In this work, we report on the confinement chemistry for activating molecular oxygen over oxides under mild conditions by presenting the synthesis and characterization of FeOx species confined to the pores of support CeO2 nanospheres. Active catalytic materials are obtained by a controllable three-step method via the formation of porous CeO2 nanospheres that have an average diameter of 120 nm and exhibit a large surface area of 168 m2 g-1 and a pore size of 18.7 nm, confining FeOx in intimate contact with ultra-small Pt particles in pores. The optimized PtOy-FeOx/CeO2-H catalyst showed an excellent performance in the preferential oxidation of CO reactions, as featured by 100% CO conversion at room temperature with almost no attenuation in a prolonged operation, which could not be accessible without pore-confined FeOx centers. Mechanical studies prove that the reaction progresses via abnormal non-competitive adsorption associated with synergistic roles from uniform loading, stabilization of divalent Fe species, surface oxygen activation on CeO2 supports, and the reduced H2 spillover effect on Pt0, making the CO species adsorbed on Ptδ+ easier to be desorbed. The methodology demonstrated here may inspire one to explore more advanced catalysts with high activity at room temperature essential for a wide range of applications.

Abstract
Developing better three-way catalysts with improved low-temperature performance is essential for cold start emission control. Density functional theory in combination with microkinetics simulations is used to predict reactivity of CO/NO/H2 mixtures on a small Pd cluster on CeO2(111). At low temperatures, N2O formation occurs via a N2O2 dimer over metallic Pd3. Part of the N2O intermediate product re-oxidizes Pd, limiting NO conversion and requiring rich conditions to obtain high N2 selectivity. High N2 selectivity at elevated temperatures is due to N2O decomposition on oxygen vacancies. Doping CeO2 by Fe is predicted to lead to more oxygen vacancies and a higher N2 selectivity, which is validated by the lower onset of N2 formation for a Pd catalyst supported on Fe-doped CeO2 prepared by flame spray pyrolysis. Activating ceria surface oxygen by transition metal doping is a promising strategy to improve the performance of three-way catalysts.

Abstract
A series of mesoporous cerium-iron binary oxides was prepared by a hydrothermal technique using CTAB as a template. The influence of the Fe/Ce ratio and the variations in the preparation techniques such as the type of solvent and the precipitation agent, the approach of the template release, and the temperature of calcination on the phase composition, textural, structural, surface, and redox properties of the obtained materials was studied in details by XRD, nitrogen physisorption, TPR, FTIR, UV-vis, XPS, Raman, and Moessbauer spectroscopies. The materials were tested as catalysts in methanol decomposition and total oxidation of ethyl acetate. It was assumed that the binary materials represented a complex mixture of differently substituted ceria- and hematite-like phases. Critical assessment of their formation on the base of a common mechanism scheme was proposed. This scheme declares the key role of the formation of shared Ce-O-Fe structures by insertion of Fe3+ in the ceria lattice and further competitive compensation of the lattice charge balance by the existing in the system ions, which could be controlled by the Fe/Ce ratio and the hydrothermal synthesis procedure used. This mechanism provides proper understanding and regulation of the catalytic behavior of cerium-iron oxide composites in methanol decomposition with a potential for hydrogen production and total oxidation of ethyl acetate as a model of VOCs.

Abstract
Pd deposited on CeOx-MnOx/La-Al2O3 has been prepared as a sensitive material for methane (CH4) detection. The effect of different amounts (1.25%, 2.5% and 5%) of Pd loading has been investigated. The as prepared materials were deposited on Pt microcoils using a drop-coating method, as a way of developing pellistors operated using a Wheatstone bridge configuration. By spanning the operating temperature range between 300 °C and 550 °C, we established the linearity region as well as the maximum sensitivity towards 4900 ppm of CH4. By making use of the sigmoid dependence of the output voltage signal from the Wheatstone bridge, the gas surface reaction and diffusion phenomena have been decoupled. The pellistor with 5% Pd deposited on CeOx-MnOx/La-Al2O3 exhibited the highest selective-sensitivity in the benefit of CH4 detection against threshold limits of carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Accordingly, adjusting the percent of Pd makes the preparation strategies of pellistors good candidates towards CH4 detection.

Abstract
CeO2-Fe2O3 mixed oxides are very attractive as catalysts for catalytic oxidation. Herein, we report the structural dependence of the Ce1- xFe xO2-δ catalysts for CH4 combustion and CO oxidation via changing lattice distortion degrees, surface Fe2O3 states, and oxygen vacancy concentrations. The lattice distortion degree and oxygen vacancy concentration of Ce-Fe-O solid solution can be tuned by changing the contents of Fe and the precipitation temperatures in the preparation process. The precipitation at relatively high temperature (70 °C) promotes the lattice distortion, whereas a lower temperature (0 °C) helps the formation of surface oxygen vacancies. The in situ diffuse reflectance infrared/Raman experiments and the physicochemical characterization suggest that both the CO and CH4 oxidations mainly follow a Mars-van Krevelen mechanism. Both the lattice distortion and the surface iron species play a crucial role in determining the catalytic activity by affecting the redox property of the catalysts. The surface iron species, combined with the oxygen vacancies, improve the catalytic performance by enhancing the adsorption capacity of reactants and reducibility of catalysts. The lattice distortion of CeO2 contributes to the catalytic activity by tuning the oxygen mobility in the bulk, which promotes the re-oxidation rate of catalysts.

Abstract
Particulate matter and NO x emissions from diesel exhaust remains one of the most pressing environmental problems. We explore the use of hierarchically ordered mixed Fe-Ce-Zr oxides for the simultaneous capture and oxidation of soot and reduction of NO x by ammonia in a single step. The optimized material can effectively trap the model soot particles in its open macroporous structure and oxidize the soot below 400 °C while completely removing NO in the 285-420 °C range. Surface characterization and DFT calculations emphasize the defective nature of Fe-doped ceria. The isolated Fe ions and associated oxygen vacancies catalyze facile NO reduction to N2. A mechanism for the reduction of NO with NH3 on Fe-doped ceria is proposed involving adsorbed O2. Such adsorbed O2 species will also contribute to the oxidation of soot.

Abstract
FeCeOx has been successfully synthesized by ultrasonic impregnation method and applied in diclofenac removal in heterogeneous Fenton process. The effects of ultrasonic density, impregnation time, mole ratio of Fe and Ce and calcination temperature were investigated. Nitrogen adsorption/desorption, SEM, XRD, HRTEM, Raman and XPS analyses were characterized. Stability and reusability of FeCeOx were evaluated. The results indicated that 83% degradation efficiency of diclofenac was achieved by FeCeOx under the optimum preparation conditions. Fe ions were distributed uniformly in crystal structure and the solid solution structure of FeCeOx with a lattice constriction was formed. Exposed crystalline plane (200) with a relatively high surface energy may be the main reason to provide high catalytic activity of FeCeOx. Oxygen vacancies took part in catalytic process and a portion of them were oxidized after reaction. FeCeOx showed an excellent chemical stability and reusability in heterogeneous Fenton process.

Abstract
Here we report an in-depth structural characterization of transition metal-doped zinc oxide nanoparticles that have recently been used as anode materials for Li-ion batteries. Structural refinement of powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) data allowed the determination of small though reproducible changes in the unit cell dimensions of four ZnO samples (wurtzite structure) prepared with different dopants or different synthesis conditions. Moreover, large variations of the full width at half-maximum of the XRD reflections indicate that the crystallinity of the samples decreases in the order ZnO, Zn0.9Co0.1O, Zn0.9Fe0.1O/C, and Zn0.9Fe0.1O (the crystallite sizes as determined by Williamson-Hall plots are 42, 29, 15, and 13 nm, respectively). X-ray absorption spectroscopy data indicate that Co is divalent, whereas Fe is purely trivalent in Zn0.9Fe0.1O and 95% trivalent (Fe(3+)/(Fe(3+) + Fe(2+)) ratio = 0.95) in Zn0.9Fe0.1O/C. The aliovalent substitution of Fe(3+) for Zn(2+) implies the formation of local defects around Fe(3+) such as cationic vacancies or interstitial oxygen for charge balance. The EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure) data, besides providing local Fe-O and Co-O bond distances, are consistent with a large amount of charge-compensating defects. The Co-doped sample displays similar EXAFS features to those of pure ZnO, suggesting the absence of a large concentration of defects as found in the Fe-doped samples. These results are of substantial importance for understanding and elucidating the modified electrochemical lithiation mechanism by introducing transition metal dopants into the ZnO structure for the application as lithium-ion anode material.

Abstract
We examine the role of Fe(3+) and vacancies (V(O)) on the magnetism of Fe-doped CeO2 nanoparticles. Magnetic nanoparticles of Ce(100-x)Fe(x)O2 (x = 0, 0.26, 1.82, 2.64, 5.26, 6.91, and 7.22) were prepared by a co-precipitation method, and their structural, compositional and magnetic properties were investigated. The CeO2 nanoparticles had a mixed valance of Ce(4+) and Ce(3+) ions, and doping introduced Fe(3+) ions. The decrease in Ce(3+) and increase in Fe(3+) concentrations indicated the presence of more [Fe(3+) + V(O)(2-)] complexes with Fe loading in the particles. Charge neutralization, Fe(3+) + V(O)(2-) + 2Ce(4+) ↔ 2Ce(3+) + Fe(3+), identified the impact of V(O) on the magnetism, where our results suggest that the Fe-doped CeO2 nanoparticle magnetism is mediated by a majority of [Fe(3+) + V(O)(2-)]-Ce(3+) -[Fe(3+) + V(O)(2-)] complexes.

Abstract
Nanoscale Fe : CeO2-x oxygen storage material for the process of chemical looping has been investigated by advanced transmission electron microscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy before and after a model looping procedure, consisting of redox cycles at heightened temperature. Separately, the activity of the nanomaterial has been tested in a toluene total oxidation reaction. The results show that the material consists of ceria nanoparticles, doped with single Fe atoms and small FeOx clusters. The iron ion is partially present as Fe(3+) in a solid solution within the ceria lattice. Furthermore, enrichment of reduced Fe(2+) species is observed in nanovoids present in the ceria nanoparticles, as well as at the ceria surface. After chemical looping, agglomeration occurs and reduced nanoclusters appear at ceria grain boundaries formed by sintering. These clusters originate from surface Fe(2+) aggregation, and from bulk Fe(3+), which "leaks out" in reduced state after cycling to a slightly more agglomerated form. The activity of Fe : CeO2 during the toluene total oxidation part of the chemical looping cycle is ensured by the dopant Fe in the Fe1-xCexO2 solid solution, and by surface Fe species. These measurements on a model Fe : CeO2-x oxygen storage material give a unique insight into the behavior of dopants within a nanosized ceria host, and allow to interpret a plethora of (doped) cerium oxide-based reactions.

Abstract
Conversion of methane to syngas using a chemical-looping concept is a novel method for syngas generation. This process is based on the transfer of gaseous oxygen source to fuel (e.g., methane) by means of a cycling process using solid oxides as oxygen carriers to avoid direct contact between fuel and gaseous oxygen. Syngas is produced through the gas-solid reaction between methane and solid oxides (oxygen carriers), and then the reduced oxygen carriers can be regenerated by a gaseous oxidant, such as air or water. The oxygen carrier is recycled between the two steps, and the syngas with a ratio of H2/CO = 2.0 can be obtained successively. Air is used instead of pure oxygen allowing considerable cost savings, and the separation of fuel from the gaseous oxidant avoids the risk of explosion and the dilution of product gas with nitrogen. The design and elaboration of suitable oxygen carriers is a key issue to optimize this method. As one of the most interesting oxygen storage materials, ceria-based and perovskite oxides were paid much attention for this process. This paper briefly introduced the recent research progresses on the oxygen carriers used in the chemical-looping selective oxidation of methane (CLSOM) to syngas.
