Abstract
Type-I photosensitizers (PSs) generate cytotoxic oxygen radicals by electron transfer even in a hypoxic environment. Nevertheless, the preparation of type-I PSs remains a challenge due to the competition of triplet–triplet energy transfer with O2 (type-II process). In this work, we report an effective strategy for converting the conventional type-II PS to a type-I PS by host–guest complexation. Electron-rich pillar[5]arenes are used as an electron donor and macrocyclic host to produce a host–guest complex with the traditional electron-deficient type-II PS, an iodide BODIPY-based guest. The host–guest complexation promotes intermolecular electron transfer from the pillar[5]arene moiety to BODIPY and then to O2 by the type-I process upon light-irradiation, leading to efficient generation of the superoxide radical (O2−˙). The results of anti-tumor studies indicate that this supramolecular PS demonstrates high photodynamic therapy efficacy even under hypoxic conditions. This work provides an efficient method to prepare type-I PSs from existing type-II PSs by using a supramolecular strategy. A supramolecular strategy is reported for converting the conventional photodynamic agents from a singlet oxygen generator to a superoxide radical generator by the host–guest interaction enhanced electron transfer.![]()

Abstract
The oxygenic photosynthesis of green plants, green algae, and cyanobacteria is the major provider of energy-rich compounds in the biosphere. The so-called "Z-scheme" is at the heart of this "engine of life". Two photosystems (photosystem I and II) work in series to build up a higher redox ability than each photosystem alone can provide, which is necessary to drive water oxidation into oxygen and NADP(+) reduction into NADPH with visible light. Here we show a mimic of the Z-scheme with a molecular tetrad. The tetrad Bodipy-NDI-TAPD-Ru is composed of two different dyes-4,4-difluoro-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-2,6-diethyl-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (Bodipy) and a Ru(II)(bipyridine)3 (Ru) derivative-which are connected to a naphthalene diimide (NDI) electron acceptor and tetraalkylphenyldiamine (TAPD) playing the role of electron donor. A strong laser pulse excitation of visible light where the two dye molecules (Ru and Bodipy) absorb with equal probability leads to the cooperative formation of a highly energetic charge-separated state composed of an oxidized Bodipy and a reduced Ru. The latter state cannot be reached by one single-photon absorption. The energy of the final charge-separated state (oxidized Bodipy/reduced Ru) in the tetrad lies higher than that in the reference dyads (Bodipy-NDI and TAPD-Ru), leading to the energy efficiency of the tetrad being 47% of the sum of the photon threshold energies. Its lifetime was increased by several orders of magnitude compared to that in the reference dyads Bodipy-NDI and TAPD-Ru, as it passes from about 3 ns in each dyad to 850 ns in the tetrad. The overall quantum yield formation of this extended charge-separated state is estimated to be 24%. Our proof-of-concept result demonstrates the capability to translate a crucial photosynthetic energy conversion principle into man-made molecular systems for solar fuel formation, to obtain products of higher energy content than those produced by a single photon absorption.

Abstract
This study investigated theoretical photoinduced charge transport in a bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cell controlled by an external electric field. Our method for visualizing charge difference density identified the excited state properties of photoinduced charge transfer, and the charge transfer excited states were distinguished from local excited states during electronic transitions. Furthermore, the calculated rates for the charge transfer revealed that the charge transfer was strongly influenced by the external electric field. The external electric field accelerated the rate of charge transfer by up to one order when charge recombination was significantly restrained. Our research demonstrated that photoinduced charge transport controlled by an external electric field in a BHJ solar cell is efficient, and the exciton dissociation is not the limiting factor in organic solar cells. Our research should aid in the rational design of a novel conjugated system of organic solar cells.

Abstract
Flexible, linked dendritic tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP)-fullerene hybrids were synthesized. They were designed to gain insight into and mimic the primary events in the natural photosynthetic reaction center. These multiporphyrin moieties are based on a light-harvesting concept. Moreover, they incorporate multiple redox components aligned along a redox gradient. Newkome-type dendrons were added to these TPP-fullerene hybrids. In principle they can mediate pH-dependent water solubility, which, however, could not be observed in this case. A protecting-group strategy using tert-butyldiphenylsilyl groups allows convergent synthesis of the dendritic compounds. The dendritic multiporphyrins were synthesized separately and can be used as individual building blocks. Atropisomerism was observed in the dendritic compounds, and single atropisomers could be assigned to the corresponding peaks of a characteristic pattern in the NMR spectra. Deprotection of the Newkome-type dendrons was shown to be feasible under mild conditions that leave the redox gradient intact.

Abstract
A broadband capturing, charge stabilizing, photosynthetic antenna-reaction center model compound has been newly synthesized and characterized. The model compound is comprised of a zinc porphyrin covalently linked to three units of triphenylamine entities and a zinc phthalocyanine entity. The absorption and fluorescence spectra of zinc porphyrin complemented that of zinc phthalocyanine offering broadband coverage. Stepwise energy transfer from singlet excited triphenylamine to zinc porphyrin, and singlet excited zinc porphyrin to zinc phthalocyanine (kENT ∼ 10(11) s(-1)) was established from spectroscopic and time-resolved transient absorption techniques. Next, an electron acceptor, fullerene was introduced via metal-ligand axial coordination to both zinc porphyrin and zinc phthalocyanine centers, and they were characterized by spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques. An association constant of 4.9 × 10(4) M(-1) for phenylimidazole functionalized fullerene binding to zinc porphyrin, and 5.1 × 10(4) M(-1) for it binding to zinc phthalocyanine was obtained. An energy level diagram for the occurrence of different photochemical events within the multi-modular donor-acceptor conjugate was established from spectral and electrochemical data. Unlike the previous zinc porphyrin-zinc phthalocyanine-fullerene conjugates, the newly assembled donor-acceptor conjugate has been shown to undergo the much anticipated initial charge separation from singlet excited zinc porphyrin to the coordinated fullerene followed by a hole shift process to zinc phthalocyanine resulting in a long-lived charge separated state as revealed by femto- and nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopic techniques. The lifetime of the final charge separated state was about 100 ns.

Abstract
The photophysical properties of a supramolecular fullerene-porphyrin ensemble resulting from the self-assembly of a pyrrolidinofullerene-imidazole derivative (F1) with a multimetalloporphyrin array constructed around a hexasubstituted fullerene core (F(ZnP)12) have been investigated. The fullerene hexa-adduct core of the host system does not play any active role in the cascade of photoinduced events of the supramolecular ensemble, indeed no intercomponent photoinduced processes could be observed in host F(ZnP)12. In contrast, upon axial coordination with the monosubstituted fullerene guest F1, a quantitative quenching of the fluorescence signal of the metalloporphyrins was observed for the supramolecular complex [F(ZnP)12(F1)n] both in polar and nonpolar solvents. In toluene, the supramolecular ensemble exhibits a charge transfer emission centered around nm, suggesting the occurrence of intramolecular face-to-face interactions of F1 with neighboring metalloporphyrin moieties within the self-assembled photoactive array. This mechanism is supported by the fact that a one order of magnitude increase in the binding constant was observed for the supramolecular complex [F(ZnP)12(F1)n] when compared with a reference system lacking the pyrrolidinofullerene unit. In benzonitrile, a long-lived charge-separated state (τ=0.3 μs) has been detected for the supramolecular adduct.
