Sequential C-H activation and dinuclear insertion of ethylene promoted by a diiridium complex

Versatile deprotonated NHC: C,N-bridged dinuclear iridium and rhodium complexes

Bearing the versatility of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands, here density functional theory (DFT) calculations unravel the capacity of coordination of a deprotonated NHC ligand (pNHC) to generate a doubly C2,N3-bridged dinuclear complex. Here, in particular the discussion is based on the combination of the deprotonated 1-arylimidazol (aryl = mesityl (Mes)) with [M(cod)(μ-Cl)] (M = Ir, Rh) generated two geometrical isomers of complex [M(cod){µ-C₃H₂N₂(Mes)-κC2,κN3}]₂). The latter two isomers display conformations head-to-head (H-H) and head-to-tail (H-T) of C_S and C₂ symmetry, respectively. The isomerization from the H-H to the H-T conformation is feasible, whereas next substitutions of the cod ligand by CO first, and PMe₃ later confirm the H-T coordination as the thermodynamically preferred. It is envisaged the exchange of the metal, from iridium to rhodium, confirming here the innocence of the nature of the metal for such arrangements of the bridging ligands.

Dinuclear iridium and rhodium complexes with bridging arylimidazolide-N(3),C(2) ligands: synthetic, structural, reactivity, electrochemical and spectroscopic studies

Deprotonation of 1-arylimidazoles (aryl = mesityl (Mes), 2,6-diisopropylphenyl (Dipp)), with n-butyl lithium afforded the corresponding derivatives (1-aryl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)lithium (1a, Ar = Mes; 1b, Ar = Dipp) in good yield. Reaction of 1a with 0.5 equiv. of [Ir(cod)(μ-Cl)]2 yielded two geometrical isomers of a doubly C2,N3-bridged dinuclear complex [Ir(cod){μ-C3H2N2(Mes)-κC2,κN3}]2 (3), 3H-H, a head-to-head (H-H) isomer of CS symmetry, and 3H-T, the thermodynamically preferred head-to-tail (H-T) isomer of C2 symmetry. The metallated carbon of the 4 electron donor anionic bridging ligands has some carbene character, reminiscent of the situation in N-metallated protic NHC complexes. Displacement of cod ligands from 3H-H and 3H-T afforded the tetracarbonyl complexes [Ir(CO)2{μ-C3H2N2(Mes)-κC2,κN3}]24H-H and 4H-T, respectively. The reaction with PMe3, which gave only one complex, [Ir(CO)(PMe3){μ-C3H2N2(Mes)-κC2,κN3}]2 (5), demonstrates that the isomerization of the central core Ir[μ-C3H2N2(Mes)-κC2,κN3]2Ir from H-H to H-T on going from 4H-H to 5 is readily triggered by phosphine substitution under mild conditions. Oxidative-addition of MeI to 5 afforded the formally metal-metal bonded d(7)-d(7) complex [Ir2(CO)2(PMe3)2(Me)I{μ-C3H2N2(Mes)-κC2,κN3}2] (6). The blue [Ir(C2H4)2{μ-C3H2N2(Mes)-κC2,κN3}]2 (7) and purple [Rh(C2H4)2{μ-C3H2N2(Dipp)-κC2,κN3}]2 (9) tetraethylene complexes were also obtained with only a H-T arrangement of the bridging ligands. Although only modestly efficient in alkane dehydrogenation, complex 7 was found to be a more active pre-catalyst than 3H-T, 4H-T and 5, probably because of the favorable lability of the ethylene ligands. From cyclic voltammetry, exhaustive coulometry and spectroelectrochemistry studies, it was concluded that 3H-T undergoes a metal-based one electron oxidation to generate the mixed-valent Ir(i)/Ir(ii) system. The energy of the intervalence band for the orange dirhodium complex [Rh(cod){μ-C3H2N2(Mes)-κC2,κN3}]2 (8) is shifted toward lower energies in comparison with 3H-T, reflecting the decrease of the energy with the intermetallic distance. It was concluded from the EPR study that the Ir and Rh centres contribute substantially to the experimental magnetic anisotropy and thus to the singly occupied molecular orbital (SOMO) in the mixed-valent Ir(i)/Ir(ii) and Rh(i)/Rh(ii) systems. The molecular structures of 3H-H, 3H-T, 8 and 9 have been determined by X-ray diffraction.

Synthesis of heterobimetallic Ru-Mn complexes and the coupling reactions of epoxides with carbon dioxide catalyzed by these complexes

The heterobimetallic complexes [(eta5-C5H5)Ru(CO)(mu-dppm)Mn(CO)4] and [(eta5-C5Me5)Ru(mu-dppm)(mu-CO)2Mn(CO)3] (dppm = bis-diphenylphosphinomethane) have been prepared by reacting the hydridic complexes [(eta5-C5H5)Ru(dppm)H] and [(eta5-C5Me5)Ru(dppm)H], respectively, with the protonic [HMn(CO)5] complex. The bimetallic complexes can also be synthesized through metathetical reactions between [(eta5-C5R5)Ru(dppm)Cl] (R = H or Me) and Li+[Mn(CO)5]-. Although the complexes fail to catalyze the hydrogenation of CO2 to formic acid, they catalyze the coupling reactions of epoxides with carbon dioxide to yield cyclic carbonates. Two possible reaction pathways for the coupling reactions have been proposed. Both routes begin with heterolytic cleavage of the RuMn bond and coordination of an epoxide molecule to the Lewis acidic ruthenium center. In Route I, the Lewis basic manganese center activates the CO2 by forming the metallocarboxylate anion which then ring-opens the epoxide; subsequent ring-closure gives the cyclic carbonate. In Route II, the nucleophilic manganese center ring-opens the ruthenium-attached epoxide to afford an alkoxide intermediate; CO2 insertion into the RuO bond followed by ring-closure yields the product. Density functional calculations at the B3LYP level of theory were carried out to understand the structural and energetic aspects of the two possible reaction pathways. The results of the calculations indicate that Route II is favored over Route I.

Mechanistic Investigations of Imine Hydrogenation Catalyzed by Dinuclear Iridium Complexes

Treatment of [Ir2(mu-H)(mu-Pz)2H3(NCMe)(PiPr3)2] (1) with one equivalent of HBF4 or [PhNH=CHPh]BF4 affords efficient catalysts for the homogeneous hydrogenation of N-benzylideneaniline. The reaction of 1 with HBF4 leads to the trihydride-dihydrogen complex [Ir2(mu-H)(mu-Pz)2H2(eta2-H2)(NCMe)(PiPr3)2]BF4 (2), which has been characterized by NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations on a model complex. Complex 2 reacts with imines such as tBuN=CHPh or PhN=CHPh to afford amine complexes [Ir2(mu-H)(mu-Pz)2H2(NCMe){L}(PiPr3)2]BF4 (L = NH(tBu)CH2Ph, 3; NH(Ph)CH2Ph, 4) through a sequence of proton- and hydride-transfer steps. Dihydrogen partially displaces the amine ligand of 4 to form 2; this complements a possible catalytic cycle for the N-benzylideneaniline hydrogenation in which the amine-by-dihydrogen substitution is the turnover-determining step. The rates of ligand substitution in 4 and its analogues with labile ligands other than amine are dependent upon the nature of the leaving ligand and independent on the incoming ligand concentration, in agreement with dissociative substitutions. Water complex [Ir2(mu-H)(mu-Pz)2H2(NCMe)(OH2)(PiPr3)2]BF4 (7) hydrolyzes N-benzylideneaniline, which eventually affords the poor hydrogenation catalyst [Ir2(mu-H)(mu-Pz)2H2(NCMe)(NH2Ph)(PiPr3)2]BF4 (11). The rate law for the catalytic hydrogenation in 1,2-dichloroethane with complex [Ir2(mu-H)(mu-Pz)2H2(OSO2CF3)(NCMe)(PiPr3)2] (8) as catalyst precursor is rate = k[8]{p(H2)}; this is in agreement with the catalytic cycle deduced from the stochiometric experiments. The hydrogenation reaction takes place at a single iridium center of the dinuclear catalyst, although ligand modifications at the neighboring iridium center provoke changes in the hydrogenation rate. Even though this catalyst system is also capable of effectively hydrogenating alkenes, N-benzylideneaniline can be selectively hydrogenated in the presence of simple alkenes.

Various coordination modes of the bis(di(o-N,N-dimethylanilinyl)phosphino)methane ligand in mononuclear and binuclear complexes of group 8 and group 9 metals

The synthesis and characterization of a series of compounds involving the bis(di(o-N,N-dimethylanilinyl)phosphino)methane (dmapm) ligand are described. The mononuclear complexes [MCl(CO)(P,N-dmapm)] (M = Rh, Ir) have a square-planar geometry in which the dmapm ligand chelates via a phosphine functionality and an adjacent amino group. The carbonyl ligand lies opposite the amine, while the chloro ligand is trans to the phosphine. The related complex [RhI(CO)(P,N-dmapm)] has also been prepared. All compounds are highly fluxional by at least three independent processes, as discussed for the rhodium-chloro species. A diiridium complex, [Ir(2)Cl2(CO)2(P,N,P',N'-dmapm)], and the closely related rhodium/iridium analogue, [RhIrCl2(CO)2(P,N,P',N'-dmapm)], have been prepared in which the metals are bridged by the diphosphine group while an amino group at each end of the diphosphine is also coordinating to each metal on opposite faces of the MIrP2 plane (M = Ir or Rh). For the Ir2 species, the carbonyl and chloro groups are again shown to be opposite the amine and phosphine functionalites, respectively. The mononuclear complex [Ru(CO)3(P,P'-dmapm)] has also been prepared. In contrast to the mononuclear species of rhodium and iridium, the dmapm group chelates the ruthenium center through both phosphorus atoms, occupying one axial and one equatorial site of Ru in a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry. Reaction of this Ru species with 1/2 equiv of the complexes [RhClL2]2 (L2 = COD, (C2H4)2, (CO)2) yields the unstable Rh/Ru product [RhRuCl(CO)3(P,N,P',N'-dmapm)].

The synthesis of [FeRu(CO)2(μ-CO)2(η-C5H5)(η-C5Me5)] and convenient entries to its organometallic chemistry

The synthesis, fluxionality and reactivity of the heterobimetallic complex [FeRu(CO)2(mu-CO)2(eta-C5H5)(eta-C5Me5)] are described. Complex exhibits enhanced photolytic reactivity towards alkynes compared to its homometallic analogues, forming the dimetallacyclopentenone complexes [FeRu(CO)(mu-CO){mu-eta]1:eta3-C(O)CR"CR'}eta]-C5H5)(eta-C5Me5)]( R'= R"= H; R'= R"= CO2Me; R'= H, R"= CMe2OH). Prolonged photolysis with diphenylethyne gives the dimetallatetrahedrane complex [FeRu(mu-CO)(mu-eta2:eta2-CPhCPh)(eta-C5H5)(eta-C5Me5)], which contains the first iron-ruthenium double bond. Complexes containing a number of organic fragments can be synthesised using , and . Heating a solution of gave the alkenylidene complex [FeRu(CO)2(mu-CO){mu-eta]1:eta2-C=C(CO2Me)2}(eta-C5H5)(eta-C5Me5)] through an unusual methylcarboxylate migration. Protonation and then addition of hydride to gives the ethylidene complex [FeRu(CO)2(mu-CO)(mu-CHCH3)(eta-C5H5)(eta-C5Me5)] via the ionic vinyl species [FeRu(CO)2(mu-CO)(mu-eta]1:eta2-CH=CH2)(eta-C5H5)(eta-C5Me5)][BF4]. Compound exhibits cis/trans isomerisation at room temperature. Protonation of dimetallacyclopentenone complexes gives the allenyl species [FeRu(CO)2(mu-CO)(mu-eta1:eta2-CH=C=CMe2)(eta-C5H5)(eta-C5Me5)][BF4]. Compound exist as three isomers, two cis and one trans. The two cis isomers are shown to be interconverting by sigma-pi isomerisation. The solid state structures of these compounds were established by X-ray crystallography and are discussed.

Inter- and Intramolecular Activation of Aromatic C−H Bonds by Diphosphine and Hydrido-Bridged Dinuclear Iridium Complexes

Reactions of [(Cp*Ir)2(mu-dmpm)(mu-H)2]2+ (1) with NaOtBu in aromatic solvent at room temperature give [(Cp*Ir)(H)(mu-dmpm)(mu-H)(Cp*Ir)(Ar)]+ [Ar = Ph (3), p-Tol (4a), m-Tol (4b), 2-furanyl (5a), 3-furanyl (5b)] via intermolecular aromatic C-H activation. Treatment of [(Cp*Ir)2(mu-dppm)(mu-H)2]2+ (2) with base (Et2NH) results in intramolecular C-H activation of the phenyl group in the dppm ligand to give [(Cp*Ir)(H){mu-PPh(C6H4)CH2PPh2}(mu-H)(Cp*Ir)]+ (6). The structures of 3, 5a, and 6 have been determined by X-ray diffraction methods.
