Syntheses, crystallographic/computational characterizations, and reactions of the first 10-vertex arachno- and nido-phosphamonocarbaboranes

Hypoelectronic isomeric diiridaboranes [(Cp*Ir)2B6H6]: the "Rule-Breakers"(Cp* = η(5)-C5Me5)

In an effort to synthesize supraicosahedral iridaboranes, pyrolysis of [Cp*IrCl2]2 with excess [BH3·] was carried out, and this synthesis afforded the isomeric iridaborane [(Cp*Ir)2B6H6] clusters 1 and 2. The geometry of 1 was determined to be dodecahedral, i.e., similar to that of [B8H8](2-), whereas 2 was found to exhibit a cluster shape that can be derived from a nine-vertex tricapped trigonal prism by removing one of the capped vertices. The calculation of a large HOMO-LUMO gap further rationalized the isocloso structures for these isomers.

Proton sponge and fatty acid interactions at the air-water interface. Thermodynamic, spectroscopic, and microscopic study

Mixed Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of a proton sponge, namely, diphenyl bis(octadecylamino)phosphonium bromide, and a fatty acid, docosanoic acid, with different molar ratios have been fabricated. Surface pressure versus area per molecule isotherms were registered, and the excess areas and excess Gibbs energy of mixing were calculated. Strong interactions between the proton sponge and the fatty acid take place at the air-water interface. The existence of a stoichiometric 1:1 acid-base reaction between the two components forming a complex on the water surface at high surface pressures has been demonstrated. Furthermore, the reaction had an efficiency close to 100% at the air-water interface; meanwhile, it hardly takes place in organic solvents such as chloroform or even a mixture of chloroform and dimethyl sulfoxide. The floating films were transferred to solid supports and characterized by means of several techniques including IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy, revealing the presence of highly ordered alkyl chains and a constant architecture along the different layers as well as the presence of different domains in the LB films, except those having a 1:1 proton sponge-fatty acid ratio that are homogeneous. Such domains have been interpreted as the presence of two different phases, the 1:1 complex plus the excess component in the mixture.

Synthesis and Characterization of Hypoelectronic Rhenaboranes. Analysis of the Geometric and Electronic Structures of Species Following Neither Borane nor Metal Cluster Electron-Counting Paradigms

The reaction of (CpReH(2))(2)B(4)H(4) with monoborane leads to the sequential formation of (CpRe)(2)B(n)()H(n)() (n = 7-10, 1-4). These species adopt closed deltahedra with the same total connectivities as the closo-borane anions [B(n)()H(n)()](2)(-), n = 9-12, but with flattened geometries rather than spherical shapes. These rhenaborane clusters are characterized by high metal coordination numbers, Re-Re cross-cluster distances within the Re-Re single bond range, and formal cluster electron counts three skeletal electron pairs short of that required for a canonical closo-structure of the same nuclearity. An open cluster, (CpReH)(2)B(7)H(9) (5), is isolated that bears the same structural relationship to arachno-B(9)H(15) as 1-4 bear to the closo-borane anions. Chloroborane permits the isolation of (CpReH)(2)B(5)Cl(5) (6), an isoelectronic chloro-analogue of known open (CpWH(2))(2)B(5)H(5) and (CpRe)(2)B(6)H(4)Cl(2) (7), a triple-decker complex containing a planar, six-membered 1,2-B(6)H(4)Cl(2) ring. Both are putative five- and six-boron intermediates in the formation of 1. Electronic structure calculations (extended Hückel and density functional theory) yield geometries in agreement with the structure determinations, large HOMO-LUMO gaps in accord with the high stabilities, and (11)B chemical shifts accurately reflecting the observed shifts. Analyses of the bonding in 1-4 reveal that the CpRe.CpRe interaction generates fragment orbitals that are able to contribute the "missing" three skeletal electron pairs required for skeletal bonding. The necessity of a Re.Re interaction for strong cluster bonding requires a borane fragment shape change to accommodate it, thereby explaining the noncanonical geometries. Application of the debor principle of borane chemistry to the shapes of 1-4 readily rationalizes the observed geometries of 5 and 6. This evidence of the scope of transition metal fragment control of borane geometry suggests the existence of a large class of metallaboranes with structures not found in known borane or metal clusters.

Syntheses, Characterizations, and Coordination Chemistry of the 10-Vertex Phosphadicarbaboranes 6-R-arachno-6,8,9-PC2B7H11and 6-R-arachno-6,5,7-PC2B7H11

The 10-vertex phosphadicarbaboranes, 6-R-arachno-6,8,9-PC(2)B(7)H(11) (1) (R = Ph 1a or Me 1b) and 6-R-arachno-6,5,7-PC(2)B(7)H(11) (2) (R = Ph 2a or Me 2b) have been synthesized using in situ dehydrohalogenation reactions of RPCl(2) (R = Ph or Me) with the arachno-4,5-C(2)B(7)H(13) and arachno-4,6-C(2)B(7)H(13) carboranes, respectively. X-ray crystallographic determinations in conjunction with DFT/GIAO/NMR calculations and NMR spectroscopic studies have established that both 1 and 2 have open cage structures based on an icosahedron missing two vertexes. The two isomeric compounds differ in the positions of the carbons and bridging hydrogens on the open face. Studies of the reactions of 2a with BH(3).THF, S(8), and hydrogen peroxide demonstrated that 2a shows strong donor properties yielding the compounds endo-6-H(3)B-exo-6-Ph-arachno-6,5,7-PC(2)B(7)H(11) (3), endo-6-S-exo-6-Ph-arachno-6,5,7-PC(2)B(7)H(11) (4), and endo-6-O-exo-6-Ph-arachno-6,5,7-PC(2)B(7)H(11) (5) in which the BH(3), S, and O substitutents are bonded to an electron lone pair localized at the phosphorus endo-position. The reaction of 2a with an excess of S(8) results in the loss of a framework boron to produce the unique open-cage compound micro(7,8)-[HS(Ph)P]-hypho-7,8-C(2)B(6)H(11) (6). 2a also formed the donor complexes cis-(eta(1)-[6-Ph-arachno-6,5,7-PC(2)B(7)H(11)])(2)PtBr(2) (7) and trans-(eta(1)-[6-Ph-arachno-6,5,7-PC(2)B(7)H(11)])(2)PdBr(2) (8) in which the metal fragment is bonded in an eta(1)-fashion at the phosphorus endo-position. In these complexes, 2a is functioning as a two-electron sigma donor to the metals and can thus be considered as an analogue of the PR(3) ligands in the classical cis-(PPh(3))(2)PtBr(2) and trans-(PPh(3))(2)PdBr(2) coordination complexes. Although 1a did not show the donor properties exhibited by 2a, its dianion 6-Ph-6,8,9-PC(2)B(7)H(9)(2)(-) (1a(2)()(-)()) readily formed eta(4)-coordinated complexes with late transition metals including 8-Ph-7-(Ph(3)P)(2)-nido-7,8,10,11-PtPC(2)B(7)H(9) (9), 7-Ph-11-(eta(5)-C(5)H(5))-nido-11,7,9,10-CoPC(2)B(7)H(9) (10), and commo-Ni-(7-Ni-8'-Ph-nido-8',10',11'-PC(2)B(7)H(9))(7-Ni-8-Ph-nido-8,10,11-PC(2)B(7)H(9)) (11).
