Abstract
In the present study, the electronic structures of a series of binuclear sandwich complexes based on the cyclooctatetraene ligand M12(η8-C8H8)2M22 (M1 = Na, K and M2 = Ca, Mg) are studied theoretically. Each cyclooctatetraene ligand binds with the metal in the η8 binding mode. The M2-M2 bond length agrees well with the reported bimetallic covalent Ca2 and Mg2 bond lengths. The Wiberg bond index (WBI) also indicates the presence of covalent M2-M2 bonds, which gives additional stability to the complex. A non-nuclear attractor (NNA) is found in-between the M2-M2 bond and the negative Laplacian of the electron density is found at the NNA. Noncovalent interaction (NCI) plot shows that electron density is localized at the M2-M2 bond. Based on the performed analysis, we have concluded that the designed sandwich complexes are electrides. We herein report, for the first time, the electride sandwich complexes of the cyclooctatetraene ligand. Due to the presence of a diffuse electron system, the electride complexes exhibit higher values of the static second hyperpolarizability within the range of 2.6 × 105 to 1.4 × 106 a.u. Among the studied complexes, M12(η8-C8H8)2Ca2 exhibit a higher value of static second hyperpolarizability.

Abstract
Fifty (50) phytocompounds from several subclasses of polyphenols, chosen based on their abundance in the plant world, were analyzed through density functional methods, using computational tools to evaluate their oral availability and particular bioactivity on several cell modulators; key descriptors and molecular features related to the electron density and electrostatic potential for the lowest energy conformers of the investigated molecules were computed. An analysis of the bioactivity scores towards six cell modulators (GPCR ligand, ion channel modulator, kinase inhibitor, nuclear receptor ligand, protease inhibitor and enzyme inhibitor) was also achieved, in the context of investigating their potential side effects on the human digestive processes. Summarizing, computational results confirmed in vivo and in vitro data regarding the high bioavailability of soy isoflavones and better bioavailability of free aglycones in comparison with their esterified and glycosylated forms. However, by a computational approach analyzing Lipinski’s rule, apigenin and apigenin-7-O-rhamnoside, naringenin, hesperetin, genistein, daidzin, biochanin A and formonetin in the flavonoid series and all hydroxycinnamic acids and all hydroxybenzoic acids excepting ellagic acid were proved to have the best bioavailability data; rhamnoside derivatives, the predominant glycosides in green plants, which were reported to have the lowest bioavailability values by in vivo studies, were revealed to have the best bioavailability data among the studied flavonoids in the computational approach. Results of in silico screening on the phenolic derivatives series also revealed their real inhibitory potency on the six parameters studied, showing a remarkable similitude between the flavonoid series, while flavonoids were more powerful natural cell modulators than the phenyl carboxylic acids tested. Thus, it can be concluded that there is a need for supplementation with digestive enzymes, mainly in the case of individuals with low digestive efficiency, to obtain the best health benefits of polyphenols in humans.

Abstract
Exploring novel nonlinear optical (NLO) materials with excess electron properties is essential for advancing the use of excess electron compounds in optics. The studied superalkali clusters NM3M' (M, M' = Li, Na, K) are thermodynamically stable and their binding energies range from -27.10 to -53.84 kcal mol-1. The observed significant values for VIPs suggest their electronic stabilities. Being excess electron candidate these clusters show significant βo value (3.9 × 107 au), which nicely correlates the hyperpolarizability reported by a two-level model (βtl). Furthermore, these clusters exhibit a remarkable static second hyperpolarizability (γo) value of 1.1 × 1010 au for the NK4 superalkali cluster. The hyper Rayleigh scattering (βHRS) is also computed where the highest value of 2.9 × 107 is recorded for NNa3K superalkali. The obtained values of βvec values (projection of hyperpolarizability on dipole moment vector) also signify the excellent nonlinearity of clusters. Besides, the calculated electro-optica pockel's effect β(-ω; ω,0) and second harmonic generation β(-2ω; ω, ω) values are much pronounced at larger dispersion frequency ω = 1064 nm. Moreover, the frequency-dependent second hyperpolarizability γ(ω) with dc-Kerr effect γ(-ω; ω,0,0) and electric field induced second harmonic generation γ(-2ω; ω,ω,0) show larger values at ω = 1064 nm. Thus the highest value of the dc-Kerr constant increases up to 1.0 × 1011 au which also signifies the larger nonlinear refractive index of the studied cluster. We hope this work could open up new possibilities using superalkali clusters as NLO materials for optoelectronics, laser, second harmonic generation and as frequency doubler.

Abstract
In this paper, a series of cationic iridium complexes [(2-phenylpyridine)2(2,2[Formula: see text]-bipyridine)Ir][Formula: see text] which substituted phenyl on different ligands position have been systematically investigated by density functional theory (DFT) method. Significantly, the first hyperpolarizability [Formula: see text] values can be enhanced by introducing phenyl on 2-phenylpyridine ligands R1 or R2, whereas substituting phenyl on 2,2[Formula: see text]-bipyridine ligands R3 result in a decreasing [Formula: see text] values. The [Formula: see text] values exhibit obvious connection with the corresponding HOMO and LUMO energy gap. Furthermore, the time-dependent (TD) DFT calculations suggest that the enhanced [Formula: see text] values are related to obvious charge transfer from 2-phenylpyridine ligands to 2,2[Formula: see text]-bipyridine ligands. The investigation of frequency-dependent first hyperpolarizability [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text]; [Formula: see text], 0) and [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text]; [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]) shown less dispersion effect at the low-frequency region for all of the studied complexes. Overall, tuning phenyl on the different ligands position can be seen as an effective strategy to modulate the second-order nonlinear optical response for these iridium complexes, which is benefit to theoretical and experimental further investigation.

Abstract
By doping the model complexant N3H3 with one or two lithium atoms, the geometrical and electronic structures as well as static electric properties of the resulting Li(N3H3), (N3H3)Li' and Li(N3H3)Li' complexes can be explored using the B3LYP, BHandHLYP, CAM-B3LYP and MP2 methods. All three complexes, especially Li(N3H3), were found to have large first hyperpolarizabilities (β 0). Meanwhile, Li(N3H3) and Li(N3H3)Li' exhibited electride and alkalide characteristics, respectively. The dependance of electric properties of alkalide Li(N3H3)Li' on the alkali atoms involved and the complexant layer number were revealed by investigating the related M(N3H3)Li' and Li(N3H3)M' (M = Na and K), and Li(N3H3) n Li' (n = 2, 3) systems. Note that the β 0 value of alkalide M(N3H3)M' increased not only with the increasing atomic number of the M'(-) anion but also with that of the M(+) cation, which differs from previously reported cases. In addition, the electric properties of the Li(N3H3)Li' alkalide were enhanced by increasing the complexant layers. However, it was found that both the complexant-complexant and the complexant-Li' interactions reduced with the addition of N3H3 layers, so no stable structures were found for larger Li(N3H3) n Li' complexes. Graphical Abstract Geometrical and electronic structures as well as static electric properties of Li(N3H3), (N3H3)Li' and Li(N3H3)Li' complexes were explored using B3LYP, BHandHLYP, CAM-B3LYP and MP2 methods.

Abstract
Recently, the crystal structures and electrochemical properties of the isomers (Sc2S "trapped" in C82) have been reported, in which the Sc2S is located inside the different positions of the C82 cage. In the present work, three isomers of endohedral metallofullerenes Sc2S@C3v(8)-C82 (A, B, and C) have been designed to explore the effect of the position of Sc2S on their interaction energies and nonlinear optical properties. Among three isomers, the Sc2S is located in different positions of the C82 cage: the angles of Sc-S-Sc in A, B, and C are 104.9, 114.8, and 115.7°, respectively. Furthermore, the analysis of natural bond orbital (NBO) charge indicates that the electron-transfer is from the Sc2S to the adjacent carbon atoms of the C82 cage. The interaction energy of B is the smallest among three isomers which is -226.2 kcal mol(-1). It was worth mentioning that their first hyperpolarizabilities (β tot) were studied, we found that their β tot values were related to the positions of Sc2S: C (2100) > B (1191) > A (947 au). We hope that the present work can provide a new strategy to promote the nonlinear optical properties of endohedral metallofullerenes by changing the positions of the encapsulated molecular. Graphical abstract Three isomers of endohedral metallofullerenes Sc2S@C3v(8)-C82 (A, B, and C) have been designed to explore the position effect of Sc2S on the interaction energies and nonlinear optical properties. Among three isomers, the Sc2S in B has the most stable position. Significantly, the first hyperpolarizability is related to the position of Sc2S inside the C82 cage, which provides a novel strategy to enhance the first hyperpolarizability by the Sc2S revolving inside the C82 cage.

Abstract
Using density functional theory computations, employing the concept of a mixed π-conjugated bridge can effectively improve the first hyperpolarizability (β0) of Möbius cyclacene (MC)-based systems with a D-π-A framework. This mixed π-conjugated bridge is constructed by applying a -(CH=CH)x-NH2 or -(CH=CH)x-NO2 chain to modify [8]MC, which can lead to a considerable β0 value (e.g. [8]MC-(CH=CH)12-NO2 (9.87 × 10(5) au) with only a certain chain length), much larger than the sole [8]MC (261 au) and the corresponding NH2/NO2-modified polyethylene chain with the same π-conjugated length. It is revealed that the substituent sites and the chain length can play a crucial role in improving β0 values of these MC-chain systems, where the β0 value can monotonically increase with increasing -(CH=CH)x- length, and the substituent electron-withdrawing -(CH=CH)x-NO2 chain is superior to the parallel electron-donating -(CH=CH)x-NH2. These appealing findings can provide valuable insights into the design of novel NLO materials based on MC.

Abstract
In 2009, an innovative type of lithium decahydroborate (Li@B(10)H(14)) complex with a basketlike complexant of decaborane (B(10)H(14)) was designed and studied. Theoretical investigation is very important for designing high-performance nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. In the present work, an unusual Li@B(10)H(14) dimer with different spin multiplicities was designed theoretically to explore the influence of the spin multiplicity on NLO properties: 1 (triplet), 2 (open-shell singlet) and 3 (singlet). Interestingly, the results show that the intersection angle (between cage A and cage A') follows the order of 1 (13.71°) > 2 (1.65°) > 3 (0°). As a result, the first hyperpolarizability (β(tot)) value follows the order of 1 (19,129 a.u.) < 2 (35,992 a.u.) < 3 (77,660 a.u.). Additionally, 1, 2 and 3 of λ(max) shows an apparent red shift with three spin multiplicities in the absorption spectrum. The results of this work can be expected to provide useful information for designing high-performance NLO materials based on decaborane.

Abstract
It is well known that settling transparency-efficiency tradeoff is important to design nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. In this work, we constructed one-dimensional polymeric cyanoacetylene (NCCCH)n by hydrogen-bond-directed-linking to understand this tradeoff from molecular level. Results show that the first hyperpolarizability of (NCCCH)n (n=2-8) gradually increased with the increase of n, and what is more important is that the red-shifts, associated with the increase of n, were very little. It is proposed that these polymeric structures possess double-degenerated charge transitions, which contribute to the hyperpolarizability in an additive fashion, and that the coupled oscillators are gradually improved, which lead to the increase of the first hyperpolarizability. Therefore, we propose the hydrogen-bond-directed-linking idea is helpful to develop the potential high-performance NLO materials.

Abstract
Six pyridyne isomers and their complexes with beryllium have been considered for the theoretical study of the third-order polarizability. The NLO properties are calculated by employing the DFT functionals BLYP, B3LYP, BHHLYP, B3PW91, BP86 and B2PLYP for the 6-311++G(d,p) basis set. The C - Be bond length in the complexes varies within 1.644 Å–1.771 Å indicating covalent interactions between the metal and pyridynes. The present investigation reveals that the magnitude of second-hyperpolarizability of pyridynes strongly enhances upon complex formation with beryllium. The maximum hyperpolarizability has been predicted for the 2,5-diberyllium pyridine complex. The lowest value of hyperpolarizability is obtained for the 2,3- and 3,4-diberyllium pyridine complexes. The chosen DFT methods predict almost identical pattern of variation of NLO property. The variation of second-hyperpolarizability has been satisfactorily explained by the excitation energy and transition dipole moment associated with the most dominant excited state.

Abstract
Beryllium forms stable sandwich and inverse sandwich complexes with the cyclobutadiene molecule. Two types of multidecker complexes are designed. Multidecker inverse sandwiches are found to be thermally more stable than the corresponding sandwich complexes. The average distance between two consecutive metals and the two consecutive cyclobutadiene rings increase gradually on increasing size of the chosen inverse sandwich complexes. The density functional theory functionals B3LYP, BHHLYP, BLYP, M06, CAM-B3LYP, and B2PLYP in conjunction with the 6-311++G (d, p) basis set have been employed for calculating the third-order electric response properties of the chosen beryllium-cyclobutadiene complexes and the results obtained for each functional are found to have a consistent trend. Compared to the normal sandwich compounds the second-hyperpolarizability of inverse sandwiches is predicated to be larger, which fairly correlates with the extent of ground-state polarization. The significant enhancement of cubic polarizability of higher-order multidecker inverse sandwiches arises from the strong coupling between the ground and the low lying charge transfer excited states. The rather strong enhancement of second-hyperpolarizability on increasing size of the beryllium-multidecker inverse sandwiches may provide a new route to design efficient nonlinear optical materials.

Abstract
In the present paper, a new type of Lewis acid-base complex BX3...Li@Calix[4]pyrrole (X = H and F) was designed and assembled based on electride molecule Li@calix[4]pyrrole (as a Lewis base) and the electron deficient molecule BX3 (as a Lewis acid) by employing quantum mechanical calculation. The new Lewis acid-base complex offers an interesting push-excess electron-pull (P-e-P) framework to enhance the stability and nonlinear optical (NLO) response. To measure the nonlinear optical response, static first hyperpolarizabilities (β 0) are exhibited. Significantly, point-face assembled Lewis acid-base complex BF3...Li@Calix[4]pyrrole (II) has considerable first hyperpolarizabilities (β 0) value (1.4 × 106 a.u.), which is about 117 times larger than reported 11,721 a.u. of electride Li@Calix[4]pyrrole. Further investigations show that, in BX3...Li@Calix[4]pyrrole with P-e-P framework, a strong charge-transfer transition from the ground state to the excited state contributes to the enhancement of first hyperpolarizability. Theory calculation of enthalpies of reaction (ΔrH0) at 298 K demonstrates that it is feasible to synthetize the complexes BX3...Li@Calix[4]pyrrole. In addition, compared with Li@Calix[4]pyrrole, the vertical ionization potential (VIP) and HOMO-LUMO gap of BX3...Li@Calix[4]pyrrole have obviously increased, due to the introduction of the Lewis acid molecule BX3. The novel Lewis acid-base NLO complex possesses not only a large nonlinear optical response but also higher stability.

Abstract
The vibrational (hyper)polarizabilities of some selected Xe derivatives are studied in the context of Bishop-Kirtman perturbation theory (BKPT) and numerical finite field methodology. It was found that for this set of rare gas compounds, the static vibrational properties are quite large, in comparison to the corresponding electronic ones, especially those of the second hyperpolarizability. This also holds for the dc-Pockels β(-ω;ω,0), Kerr γ(-ω;ω,0,0) and electric field second harmonic generation γ (-2ω;ω,ω,0) effects, although the computed nuclear relaxation (nr) vibrational contributions are smaller in magnitude than the static ones. HXeOXeH was used to study the effects of electron correlation, basis set, and geometry. Geometry effects were found to lead to noticeable changes of the vibrational and electronic second hyperpolarizability. A limited study of the effect of Xe insertion to the nr vibrational properties is also reported. Assessment of the results revealed that Xe insertion has a remarkable effect on the nr (hyper)polarizabilities. In terms of the BKPT, this is associated with a remarkable increase of the electrical and mechanical anharmonicity terms. The latter is consistent with the anharmonic character of several vibrational modes reported for rare gas compounds.

Abstract
A novel interaction mechanism between HArF and BeH(2) has been validated and characterized with quantum chemical calculations at the MP2/aug-cc-pVQZ level. They can interact through beryllium bonding formed between the positively charged Be atom in BeH(2) and the negatively charged F atom in HArF, besides through dihydrogen bonding. The former (61.3 kcal/mol) is much stronger than the latter (5.9 kcal/mol). The red shift is found for the associated H-Ar stretch in the dihydrogen bonding, whereas the big blue shift is observed for the distant H-Ar stretch in the beryllium bonding. The blue shift of the distant H-Ar stretch is affected greatly by computational methods. It is calculated to be 712 cm(-1) at the CCSD(T)/6-311++G(3df,2p) level, which appears to be the largest blue shift validated for any weakly bound complex yet. The substitution effect on the beryllium bond is similar to that on hydrogen bonds. The Kr atom makes the beryllium bond weaken and the distant blue shift decrease. The nature and properties of beryllium bond have been analyzed with natural bond orbital (NBO), atoms in molecules (AIM), and energy decomposition.

Abstract
A series of M2+(H5Aza222)–M′– (M = Be, Mg, Ca; M′ = Li, Na, K) alkalides that contain alkaline earth metal cations complexed by the H5Aza222– cage have been investigated using the CAM-B3LYP method. These alkaline earth-based alkalides not only present unusual structural features but also exhibit extraordinarily large static first hyperpolarizabilities (β0) up to 1.98 × 105 au. By comparing the β0 values among alkalides with various complexants, the Aza222 cage is found to be preferable to the previously investigated calix[4]pyrrole and n6adamanzane (n = 2, 3) complexants in enhancing the first hyperpolarizabilities of alkalides. In addition, the relationships between the β0 values of M2+(H5Aza222)–M′– and the atomic number of the M′– anion, the atomic number of the M2+ cation, and the M–M′ distance are explored.

Abstract
Ab initio calculations have been performed for the complexes of benzene with HArF, HKrF, and HXeF. The computed results indicate that the complexes of benzene-HArF exist in different conformations and among them those with π-hydrogen bonds are the more stable than those with C-H···F hydrogen bonds. Interestingly, the Ar-H stretching frequency is redshifted in the more stable isomer and blueshifted in the less stable form. The Ng (Ng=Ar, Kr, and Xe) atomic number dependence of the Ng-H···π and C-H···F hydrogen bonds has been explored. The result indicates that the strength of Ng-H···π and C-H···F hydrogen bonds is weakened with the increase of Ng atomic number. Natural bond orbital analysis has been performed to understand the interaction nature, frequency shift of H-Ng stretch, and dependence of Ng-H···π and C-H···F hydrogen bonds on the Ng atomic number.

Abstract
The expressions for computing the spin density of spin-free valence bond wave functions are derived based on the bonded tableaux approach. The new expressions, although similar to the original forms given by Cooper and McWeeny in the 1960s, are simpler and thus easier for coding. The new formulation was implemented in VB2000, an ab initio valence bond program based on algebrant algorithm and group function theory. The spin density calculation for multi-group VB wave functions is also briefly discussed. As examples of applications, the spin densities of allyl radical and diazide anion [Formula: see text] were computed at different VB levels.

Abstract
The proper theoretical calculation method for nonlinear optical (NLO) properties is a key factor to design the excellent NLO materials. Yet it is a difficult task to obatin the accurate NLO property of large scale molecule. In present work, an effective intelligent computing method, as called extreme learning machine-neural network (ELM-NN), is proposed to predict accurately the first hyperpolarizability (β(0)) of alkalides from low-accuracy first hyperpolarizability. Compared with neural network (NN) and genetic algorithm neural network (GANN), the root-mean-square deviations of the predicted values obtained by ELM-NN, GANN, and NN with their MP2 counterpart are 0.02, 0.08, and 0.17 a.u., respectively. It suggests that the predicted values obtained by ELM-NN are more accurate than those calculated by NN and GANN methods. Another excellent point of ELM-NN is the ability to obtain the high accuracy level calculated values with less computing cost. Experimental results show that the computing time of MP2 is 2.4-4 times of the computing time of ELM-NN. Thus, the proposed method is a potentially powerful tool in computational chemistry, and it may predict β(0) of the large scale molecules, which is difficult to obtain by high-accuracy theoretical method due to dramatic increasing computational cost.

Abstract
The electronic ground state, stability, and linear and nonlinear optical properties of HXeOXeF and FXeOXeF have been studied theoretically by employing complete active space valence bond (CASVB), multistate complete active space perturbation theory (MS-CASPT2), and coupled cluster methods. It is shown that the oxygen inserted between the two Xe atoms significantly modifies the ground-state electronic configuration of the formed derivative by increasing the closed-shell contribution (σ(2)) and removing the diradicaloid character observed in HXe(2)F. The electronic charge distribution has been analyzed by employing the atoms-in-molecules (AIM) method. The dissociation channels of HXeOXeF and FXeOXeF have been studied in detail. It was found that these compounds are metastable, protected by substantial energy barriers and, thus, they can be prepared under appropriate conditions. Both two- and three-body dissociation reactions have been considered. The effects of inserting O in HXe(2)F and substituting H (HXeOXeF) by F, leading to FXeOXeF, on the energy barriers are discussed. The significant effects of the inserted oxygen on the polarizability and even more on the first hyperpolarizability have been computed and rationalized.

Abstract
Theoretical calculations at the B3LYP, MP2, and CCSD(T) levels of theory disclose the conceivable existence of cationic noble gas hydrides containing two Ng atoms. These species have a general formula of HNgFNgH(+) (Ng = He-Xe), and are the cationic counterparts of the neutral HNgF. The optimized geometries, harmonic frequencies, and bonding properties point to ion-dipole complexes between a fluoride anion and two covalent H-Ng(+) cations, best formulated as (H-Ng(+))(2)F(-). The HXeFXeH(+) is also isoelectronic with the recently experimentally observed HXeOXeH (Khriachtchev et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2008, 130, 6114-6118). The resulting HNgFNgH(+) are thermochemically stable with respect to dissociation into HNg(+) + HNgF and HNg(+) + H + Ng + F, but are largely unstable with respect to both the loss of HF (with formation of HNg(+) + Ng) and H(2)F(+) (with formation of two Ng atoms). These decompositions pass through bent transition structures, and only the heaviest HArFArH(+), HKrFKrH(+), and HXeFXeH(+) are protected by energy barriers large enough (ca. 10-15 kcal mol(-1)) to support their conceivable metastability. In line with other series of noble gas compounds, the neon cation HNeFNeH(+) is the least stable among the various HNgFNgH(+).
