Abstract
The decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is the main undesired side reaction in catalytic oxidation processes of industrial interest that make use of H2O2 as a terminal oxidant, such as the epoxidation of alkenes. However, the mechanism responsible for this reaction is still poorly understood, thus hindering the development of design rules to maximize the efficiency of catalytic oxidations in terms of product selectivity and oxidant utilization efficiency. Here, we thoroughly investigated the H2O2 decomposition mechanism using a Zr-monosubstituted dimeric Lindqvist tungstate, (Bu4N)6[{W5O18Zr(μ-OH)}2] ({ZrW5}2), which revealed high activity for this reaction in acetonitrile. The mechanism of the {ZrW5}2-catalyzed H2O2 degradation in the absence of an organic substrate was investigated using kinetic, spectroscopic, and computational tools. The reaction is first order in the Zr catalyst and shows saturation behavior with increasing H2O2 concentration. The apparent activation energy is 11.5 kcal·mol-1, which is significantly lower than the values previously found for Ti- and Nb-substituted Lindqvist tungstates (14.6 and 16.7 kcal·mol-1, respectively). EPR spectroscopic studies indicated the formation of superoxide radicals, while EPR with a specific singlet oxygen trap, 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidone (4-oxo-TEMP), revealed the generation of 1O2. The interaction of test substrates, α-terpinene and tetramethylethylene, with H2O2 in the presence of {ZrW5}2 corroborated the formation of products typical of the oxidation processes that engage 1O2 (endoperoxide ascaridole and 2,3-dimethyl-3-butene-2-hydroperoxide, respectively). While radical scavengers tBuOH and p-benzoquinone produced no effect on the peroxide product yield, the addition of 4-oxo-TEMP significantly reduced it. After optimization of the reaction conditions, a 90% yield of ascaridole was attained. DFT calculations provided an atomistic description of the H2O2 decomposition mechanism by Zr-substituted Lindqvist tungstate catalysts. Calculations showed that the reaction proceeds through a Zr-trioxidane [Zr-η2-OO(OH)] key intermediate, whose formation is the rate-determining step. The Zr-substituted POM activates heterolytically a first H2O2 molecule to generate a Zr-peroxo species, which attacks nucleophilically to a second H2O2, causing its heterolytic O-O cleavage to yield the Zr-trioxidane complex. In agreement with spectroscopic and kinetic studies, the lowest-energy pathway involves dimeric Zr species and an inner-sphere mechanism. Still, we also found monomeric inner- and outer-sphere pathways that are close in energy and could coexist with the dimeric one. The highly reactive Zr-trioxidane intermediate can evolve heterolytically to release singlet oxygen and also decompose homolytically, producing superoxide as the predominant radical species. For H2O2 decomposition by Ti- and Nb-substituted POMs, we also propose the formation of the TM-trioxidane key intermediate, finding good agreement with the observed trends in apparent activation energies.

Abstract
N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) as the most frequently detected disinfection by-product has aroused widespread concern due to its unusually high carcinogenicity, however, there is still limited understanding of its formation mechanisms. In this study, the formation mechanisms of NDMA from some typical hydrazines and hydrazones with high NDMA conversion yields (60%∼90%) during ozonation, i.e., unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH), 1-formyl-2,2-dimethylhydrazine (FDMH), formaldehyde dimethylhydrazone (FDH) and acetone dimethylhydrazone (ADMH), were investigated by using DFT method with the M05 functional. A new NDMA formation mechanism from hydrazines during ozonation was proposed, in which the initial step is hydrogen abstraction rather than previously reported oxygen addition. For hydrazones, the C atom of the -N = C moiety in hydrazones is preferred to be attacked by ozone to generate N,N-dimethylaminonitrene (DMAN), which is an important intermediate in NDMA formation during ozonation. Moreover, the reactivity order of the following H atoms in hydrogen/hydride ion abstraction (HA) by ozone is -NH2 > -N(CH3)2 > -CO-NH ∼ =C(CH3)2 > =CH-. Additionally, formation pathways of some experimentally detected compounds, i.e., HOOOH, HOOH and HCOH, in the ozonation of hydrazine were elucidated in this study. The results are expected to expand our understanding of NDMA formation mechanisms and ozone reaction characteristics.

Abstract
Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), a kind of antibiotic, remains in the environment and threatens public health. Ozone as a strong and green oxidant was widely used for selective oxidation degradation of residual SMX. However, it is hard to elucidate the detailed oxidation mechanism through current experimental approaches. A theoretical study has been carried out herein for exploring possible ozonation pathways of SMX. Two reaction mechanisms, viz., direct addition (DA) and H atom transfer (HAT), are considered. The results show that the primary oxidation of aromatic rings (benzene or isoxazole rings) of SMX follows the DA mechanism, featuring an electrophilic addition. Whereas, the oxidation of amino and methyl groups of SMX follows the HAT mechanism. Following the proposed mechanisms, the primary oxidation products detected in previous experiments could reasonably be obtained according to the current calculations. More importantly, O3 molecules as an electrophilic agent feasibly attack the moiety having a large orbital contribution to the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of sulfonamides. This result suggests that the primary ozonation site of sulfonamides could be theoretically predictable through the information of their frontier molecular orbitals. Meanwhile, a positive correlation between the O3-mediated HAT energy barriers and bond dissociation energies has been found for N-H and C-H bond oxidations.

Abstract
Substituted 4-amino-1,2,4-triazin-5-ones undergo photodeamination through cleavage of the N-NH(2) bond in the presence of oxygen and water. To elucidate the mechanism of this reaction, we investigated the photolysis of metamitron (4-amino-6-phenyl-3-methyl-1,2,4-triazin-5-one) by nanosecond laser flash photolysis, steady-state irradiation, and ab initio calculations. Upon pulsed laser excitation of deoxygenated aqueous metamitron, two transient species are clearly detected. The predictions of ab initio results are consistent with experimental results: (i) it is proposed here that the transient species are, respectively, the keto and diradical forms of the metamitron keto-enol tautomerism in the triplet state, and (ii) in water, the activation free energy barrier of enolization is drastically decreased. Thus, the formation of the diradical triplet is enabled in aqueous solvent. A detailed analysis of the intermediate structures that lead to the final products (HNO(2) and deaminometamitron) is provided.

Abstract
Reaction of guanine with H2O3 in the absence and presence of a water molecule leading to the formation of 8-oxoguanine (8-oxoG) was investigated. Initial calculations were performed using imidazole (Im) as a model for the five-membered ring of guanine. The reactant, intermediate, and product complexes as well as transition states were obtained in gas phase at the B3LYP/6-31+G* and B3LYP/AUG-cc-pVDZ levels of theory. In all the cases, except for the reactions involving imidazole, single-point energy calculations were performed in gas phase at the MP2/AUG-cc-pVDZ level of theory. Solvation calculations in aqueous media were carried out using the polarizable continuum model (PCM) of the self-consistent reaction field (SCRF) theory. Vibrational frequency analysis and intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) calculations were performed to ensure that the transition states connected the reactant and product complexes properly. Zero-point energy (ZPE)-corrected total energies and Gibbs free energies at 298.15 K in gas phase and aqueous media were obtained. When a reaction of H2O3 in place of H2O2 with guanine is considered, the major barrier energy which is encountered at the first step is almost halved showing that H2O3 would be much more reactive than H2O2. Considering the reaction schemes investigated here and the observed fact that H2O3 is dissociated easily under ambient conditions, it appears that H2O3 would serve as an effective reactive oxygen species.

Abstract
Ozonation of various silanes and germanes produced the corresponding hydrotrioxides, R3SiOOOH and R3GeOOOH, which were characterized by 1H, 13C, 17O, and 29Si NMR, and by infrared spectroscopy in a two-pronged approach based on measured and calculated data. Ozone reacts with the E-H (E = Si, Ge) bond via a concerted 1,3-dipolar insertion mechanism, where, depending on the substituents and the environment (e.g., acetone-d6 solution), the H atom transfer precedes more and more E-O bond formation. The hydrotrioxides decompose in various solvents into the corresponding silanols/germanols, disiloxanes/digermoxanes, singlet oxygen (O2(1delta(g))), and dihydrogen trioxide (HOOOH), where catalytic amounts of water play an important role as is indicated by quantum chemical calculations. The formation of HOOOH as a decomposition product of organometallic hydrotrioxides in acetone-d6 represents a new and convenient method for the preparation of this simple, biochemically important polyoxide. By solvent variation, singlet oxygen (O2(1delta(g))) can be generated in high yield.

Abstract
Low-temperature ozonation (-78 degrees C) of 1,3-dioxolanes 1a-1f and 1,3-dioxanes 1g and h in acetone-d6, methyl acetate, and tert-butyl methyl ether produced both the corresponding hemiortho esters (2a-h, ROH) and acetal hydrotrioxides (3a-h, ROOOH) in molar ratios ROH/ROOOH ranging from 0.5 to 23. Both types of intermediates were fully characterized by 1H, 13C, and 17O NMR spectroscopy. DFT calculations suggest that ozone abstracts a hydride ion from 1 to form an ion pair, R+ -OOOH, which subsequently collapses to either the corresponding hemiortho ester (ROH) or the acetal hydrotrioxide (ROOOH). Hemiortho esters decomposed quantitatively into the corresponding hydroxy esters. Experimentally obtained activation parameters for the decomposition of 2a (E(a) = 13.5 +/- 1.0 kcal/mol, log A = 8.3 +/- 1.0) are in accord with a highly oriented transition state involving, according to B3LYP calculations (deltaH(a)(298) = 13.2 kcal/mol), two molecules of water as a bifunctional catalyst. This mechanism is also supported by the magnitude of the solvent isotope effect for the decomposition of 2e, i.e., k(H2O)/k(D2O) = 4.6 +/- 1.2. Besides the hydroxy esters and oxygen (3O2/1O2), dihydrogen trioxide (HOOOH) was formed in the decomposition of most of the acetal hydrotrioxides (ROOOH) investigated. The activation parameters for the decomposition of the hydrotrioxides 3a-e in various solvents were E(a) = 20 +/- 2 kcal/mol, log A = 13.5 +/- 1.5. Several mechanistic possibilities for the decomposition of ROOOH were tested by experiment and theory. The formation of the hydroxy esters and oxygen could be explained by the intramolecular transfer of the proton to form the hydroxy ester. The assistance of water in the decomposition of ROOOH to form the hydroxy esters, either directly or via hemiortho esters, was also investigated. According to DFT calculations, the formation of a hydroxy ester via hemiortho ester is energetically more favorable (deltaH(a)(298) = 14.5 kcal/mol), again due to the catalytic effect of two water molecules. HOOOH generation requires the involvement of water in the decomposition of ROOOH where the direct formation out of ROOOH is energetically preferred. The energy for a reaction between two molecules of water and singlet oxygen (delta1O2) is too high to occur in solution.

Abstract
The cis,cis-[(bpy)(2)Ru(III)(OH(2))](2)O(4+) micro-oxo dimeric coordination complex is an efficient catalyst for water oxidation by strong oxidants that proceeds via intermediary formation of cis,cis-[(bpy)(2)Ru(V)(O)](2)O(4+) (hereafter, [5,5]). Repetitive mass spectrometric measurement of the isotopic distribution of O(2) formed in reactions catalyzed by (18)O-labeled catalyst established the existence of two reaction pathways characterized by products containing either one atom each from a ruthenyl O and solvent H(2)O or both O atoms from solvent molecules. The apparent activation parameters for micro-oxo ion-catalyzed water oxidation by Ce(4+) and for [5,5] decay were nearly identical, with DeltaH(++) = 7.6 (+/-1.2) kcal/mol, DeltaS() = -43 (+/-4) cal/deg mol (23 degrees C) and DeltaH(++) = 7.9 (+/-1.1) kcal/mol, DeltaS(++) = -44 (+/-4) cal/deg mol, respectively, in 0.5 M CF(3)SO(3)H. An apparent solvent deuterium kinetic isotope effect (KIE) of 1.7 was measured for O(2) evolution at 23 degrees C; the corresponding KIE for [5,5] decay was 1.6. The (32)O(2)/(34)O(2) isotope distribution was also insensitive to solvent deuteration. On the basis of these results and previously established chemical properties of this class of compounds, mechanisms are proposed that feature as critical reaction steps H(2)O addition to the complex to form covalent hydrates. For the first pathway, the elements of H(2)O are added as OH and H to the adjacent terminal ruthenyl O atoms, and for the second pathway, OH is added to a bipyridine ring and H is added to one of the ruthenyl O atoms.

Abstract
Hydrogen peroxide exalts the reactivity of aqueous ozone by reasons that remain obscure. Should H2O2 enhance free radical production, as it is generally believed, a chain mechanism propagated by (.OH/.O2-) species would account for O3 decomposition rates in neat H2O, HR-O3, and in peroxone (O3 + H2O2) solutions, HPR-O3. We found, however, that: (1) the radical mechanism correctly predicts HR-O3 but vastly overestimates HPR-O3, (2) solvent deuteration experiments preclude radical products from the (O3 + HO2-) reaction. The modest kinetic isotope effect (KIE) we measure in H2O/D2O: HR-O3/DR-O3 = 1.5 +/- 0.3, is compatible with a chain process driven by electron- and/or O-atom transfer processes. But the large KIE found in peroxone: HPR-O3/DPR-O3 = 19.6 +/- 4.0, is due to an elementary (O3 + HO2-) reaction involving H-O2- bond cleavage. Since the KIE for the hypothetical H-atom transfer: O3 + HO2- HO3. +.O2-, would emerge as a KIE1/2 factor in the rates of the ensuing radical chain, the magnitude of the observed KIE must be associated with the hydride transfer reaction that yields a diamagnetic species: O3 + HO2- HO3- + O2. HO3-/H2O3 may be the bactericidal trioxide recently identified in the antibody-catalyzed addition of O2(1Deltag) to H2O.

Abstract
Ozonation of norcarane (1) yielded endo and exo norcarane hydrotrioxides (2a, 2b), as characterized by (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy. Further ozonation of the primary decomposition products of these hydrotrioxides, i.e., 2-norcaranols (3), produced the corresponding isomeric 2-norcaranol hydrotrioxides (4a, 4b), and hydrogen trioxide (HOOOH).
