Abstract
The functionalization of etheric C-O bonds via C-O bond cleavage is an attractive strategy for the construction of C-C and C-X bonds in organic synthesis. However, these reactions mainly involve C(sp3)-O bond cleavage, and a catalyst-controlled highly enantioselective version is extremely challenging. Here, we report a copper-catalyzed asymmetric cascade cyclization via C(sp2)-O bond cleavage, allowing the divergent and atom-economic synthesis of a range of chromeno[3,4-c]pyrroles bearing a triaryl oxa-quaternary carbon stereocenter in high yields and enantioselectivities. Importantly, this protocol not only represents the first [1,2]-Stevens-type rearrangement via C(sp2)-O bond cleavage, but also constitutes the first example of [1,2]-aryl migration reactions via vinyl cations.

Abstract
AbstractThis review article summarizes progress made on [1,2]-sigmatropic rearrangements using carbenes in the ylide formation step. While other rearrangements, such as the [2,3]-sigmatropic, Doyle–Kirmse, or Sommelet–Hauser rearrangements, have been studied in detail over the past decades, investigations on [1,2]-sigmatropic rearrangements are still limited. Based on the application of diazoalkanes as carbene precursors, research on diazoalkanes in ylide formation reactions started flourishing in the 1990s. This Short Review covers milestones from the advent of [1,2]-sigmatropic rearrangements using carbenes to generate ammonium, oxonium and other ylide species, and should serve as an overview to further promote research in this area.1 Introduction2 Ammonium Ylides3 Oxonium Ylides4 Sulfonium and Selenium Ylides5 Halonium Ylides6 Conclusion and Outlook

Abstract
Formation and rearrangement of several oxonium ylides containing cyclopropylcarbinyl migrating groups were studied. Efficient ring-contraction by [1,2]-shift to form cyclopropane-substituted cyclobutanones was observed, with no competing cyclopropane fragmentation. Substitution with the hypersensitive mechanistic probe (trans,trans-2-methoxy-3-phenylcyclopropyl)methyl led to cyclopropane fragmentation via an apparent heterolytic pathway, providing the first evidence for ion pair intermediates from ylide cleavage, and suggesting a possible alternative heterolytic mechanism for the Stevens [1,2]-shift.

Abstract
A novel approach to medium-sized cyclic ethers was devised using a Stevens [1,2]-shift of a sulfonium ylide derived from a readily accessible six-membered mixed-monothioacetal precursor. The concise and efficient transformation offers a surprising degree of chirality transfer with observed retention of stereochemical configuration on the anomeric migrating carbon and has been applied as the key step in an enantioselective formal synthesis of (+)-laurencin.

Abstract
Conversions of diazocarbonyl carbohydrate compounds catalyzed by a series of rhodium and copper catalysts in conventional heating or microwave conditions were investigated. C-H insertion product was obtained in the presence of Rh(2)(OAc)(4). Intermolecular reactions rather than intramolecular reactions occurred in the presence of copper catalysts.

Abstract
This review summarizes the current status of transition metal catalyzed reactions involving radical intermediates in organic chemistry. This part focuses on radical-based methods catalyzed by group 10 and group 11 metal complexes. Reductive and redox-neutral C-C bond formations catalyzed by low-valent metal complexes as well as catalytic oxidative methods are reviewed. Catalytic processes which rely on the combination of two metal complexes are also covered.

Abstract
Photochemical excitation of a diaryldiazomethane with an ortho-acetal both in solution and in crystals led to products that originate from the expected diarylcarbene and form an intramolecular oxonium ylide. While crystals strongly favored the formation of a benzocyclobutane by intramolecular hydrogen abstraction in the triplet carbene, reactions in benzene led exclusively to products that derive from the oxonium ylide. Studies in methyl cyclohexane glasses and in mixed crystals at 77 K led to the spectroscopic detection of triplet carbene (3)C, which partially transformed into a new species that we assign as the sought-after oxonium ylide Y. The formation of a formally ionic intermediate suggests that the scope of reactions by reactive intermediates in crystalline solids may be broader than it is generally assumed.

Abstract
Iodonium ylides, generated in situ with bisacetoxyiodobenzene, are converted to allyl- or benzyl-substituted oxonium or sulfonium ylides via rhodium- or copper-catalyzed carbene transfer. Except for the S-benzyl example, the resulting ylides undergo rearrangement to the corresponding 2-substituted heterocycles. This demonstrates the first use of iodonium ylides as diazoketone surrogates for the generation and rearrangement of onium ylide intermediates. This abbreviated one-step method proceeds in comparable yields relative to the corresponding two-step route employing diazoketone intermediates.

Abstract
A highly diastereoselective tandem ring-enlargement and aldol condensation process involving multicomponent reactions of ethereal tricyclooxonium ylide intermediate with alcohols, mono- or dialdehydes in the presence of titanium(iv) isopropoxide is described to furnish alkoxyoctahydro-1,4-benzodioxocin-6(5H)-one ring systems.

Abstract
Cyclic mixed acetals with pendant diazoketone side chains undergo efficient rearrangement to ether-bridged cyclooctanoid and cycloheptanoid systems upon treatment with Cu(hfacac)2. Stevens [1,2]-shift of an oxonium ylide furnishes the major product, in some cases accompanied by minor amounts of a product resulting from [1,2]-shift of a sulfonium ylide. These results demonstrate that hetero-substituted carbons are suitable migrating groups for the Stevens [1,2]-shift of oxonium ylides. In cases employing a mixed thioacetal, the resulting sulfide served as a trigger for cleavage of the bridging ether through one of two complementary strategies. In the hydrazulene series, the desired bicyclo[5.3.0]heptene was accompanied by the product of novel transannular SN2′ attack on the resulting allylic ketal.Key words: [1,2]-shift, diazo, medium-sized ring, oxonium ylide, ring expansion.

Abstract
[Reaction: see text] Ruthenium-catalyzed coupling of allyl ethyl ether to optically active 1-trimethylsilyl-1-alkyn-3-ols, followed by in situ ketalization and Lewis-acid-induced cyclization, affords enantiomerically pure 1,5-oxygen-bridged eight- and nine-membered carbocycles. Opening of the oxygen bridge under basic or electron transfer conditions provides optically pure medium-sized carbocycles, products that are difficult to construct using other currently available methodologies.

Abstract
Diazoketones were subjected to carbene-transfer with Rh(II) or Cu(II) catalysts to probe the selectivity for rearrangement via five- or six-membered oxonium ylides. 4,5-Bis(benzyloxy) and 4-allyloxy-5-benzyloxy substrates 3a,b showed a large preference for rearrangement via the five-membered ylide under all conditions. However, a sharp divergence was seen with 5-allyloxy-4-benzyloxy substrate 3c, which underwent predominantly a [2,3]-shift to pyran 5c via the six-membered ylide with Cu(II) catalysis and a [1,2]-shift to furan 4c via the five-membered ylide with Rh(II) catalysis.
