Abstract
A stereodivergent approach toward total syntheses of Dendrobatid alkaloids 223A and 6-epi-223A is described. The approach features a concise construction of an indolizidine skeleton by Rh-catalyzed domino hydroformylation double cyclization and sequential stereocontrolled transformations such as reductive alkylation or anti-selective α-alkylation of the 5-oxoindolizidine. These stereoselective reactions afford the desired stereochemistry in the targets.

Abstract
Reaction of ω-halo-substituted nonracemic β-sulfinamido ketones with NaH afforded the β-amino cyclohexyl ketones in excellent yields and diastereoselectivity, via an intramolecular C-alkylation, α to the carbonyl group. The reaction was found to be general and can be applied for the synthesis of different cyclohexyl amino ketones and tetrahydropyrans possessing amine and acyl substitutions.

Abstract
β2-Amino carbonyls, an α-substituted β-amino scaffold, hold a prominent place in the development of new pharmaceuticals and peptidomimetics. Herein, we report a highly efficient Rh-catalyzed ring-opening amidation of substituted cyclopropanols, which turned out to serve as a linchpin for the selective synthesis of β2-amino ketones to outcompete the formation of β3-isomers. Instead of the generally accepted rationale to consider steric factors for the β2-selectivity, orbital interaction was elucidated to play a more critical role in the amidative ring-opening of cyclopropanols to generate the key Rh-C intermediate. Subsequent inner-sphere acylnitrene transfer was achieved in excellent efficiency (TON > 5000) by using readily accessible dioxazolones as the amino source to afford β2-amino ketones with broad applicability.

Abstract
An unexpected time-controlled highly selective C3- or C2-sulfinylation of pyrroles with sulfinamides is reported for the first time. The sulfinylation of indoles with sulfinamides using this protocol is oxidant-free and can be performed under obviously more feasible conditions (1.2 equiv. of indoles, 10 min) in comparison with the precedent procedure (3-20 equiv. of indoles, 16-18 h, ammonium persulfate as oxidant, hv). A variety of functional groups were tolerated, and various C2-thioindoles and C2/3-thiopyrroles were obtained in moderate to excellent yields.

Abstract
A mild and effective method for the synthesis of polyhydroxylated quinolizidine iminosugars is described. The Mannich-type reaction of iminosugar C-glycosides with aldehyde in the presence of l-proline-Et3N provides polyhydroxylated quinolizidine iminosugars, and desired products as the potential glucosidase inhibitors were obtained in good to excellent yields with excellent stereoselectivity.

Abstract
The reaction of chiral N-tert-butanesulfinyl aldimines with β-keto acids under basic conditions at room temperature proceeds with high levels of diastereocontrol, leading to β-amino ketones in high yields. Based on DFT calculations, an eight-membered cyclic transition state involving coordination of the lithium atom to the oxygens of carboxylate and sulfinyl units was proposed, being in agreement with the observed experimental diastereomeric ratios. The synthesis of the piperidine alkaloid (-)-pelletierine was successfully undertaken in order to demonstrate the utility of this methodology.

Abstract
This review of simple indolizidine and quinolizidine alkaloids (i.e., those in which the parent bicyclic systems are in general not embedded in polycyclic arrays) is an update of the previous coverage in Volume 55 of this series (2001). The present survey covers the literature from mid-1999 to the end of 2013; and in addition to aspects of the isolation, characterization, and biological activity of the alkaloids, much emphasis is placed on their total synthesis. A brief introduction to the topic is followed by an overview of relevant alkaloids from fungal and microbial sources, among them slaframine, cyclizidine, Steptomyces metabolites, and the pantocins. The important iminosugar alkaloids lentiginosine, steviamine, swainsonine, castanospermine, and related hydroxyindolizidines are dealt with in the subsequent section. The fourth and fifth sections cover metabolites from terrestrial plants. Pertinent plant alkaloids bearing alkyl, functionalized alkyl or alkenyl substituents include dendroprimine, anibamine, simple alkaloids belonging to the genera Prosopis, Elaeocarpus, Lycopodium, and Poranthera, and bicyclic alkaloids of the lupin family. Plant alkaloids bearing aryl or heteroaryl substituents include ipalbidine and analogs, secophenanthroindolizidine and secophenanthroquinolizidine alkaloids (among them septicine, julandine, and analogs), ficuseptine, lasubines, and other simple quinolizidines of the Lythraceae, the simple furyl-substituted Nuphar alkaloids, and a mixed quinolizidine-quinazoline alkaloid. The penultimate section of the review deals with the sizable group of simple indolizidine and quinolizidine alkaloids isolated from, or detected in, ants, mites, and terrestrial amphibians, and includes an overview of the "dietary hypothesis" for the origin of the amphibian metabolites. The final section surveys relevant alkaloids from marine sources, and includes clathryimines and analogs, stellettamides, the clavepictines and pictamine, and bis(quinolizidine) alkaloids.

Abstract
Cyclic cis-beta-amino Weinreb amides, valuable building blocks for the asymmetric synthesis of cyclic beta-amino acids derivatives, are readily prepared via ring-closing metathesis of sulfinimine-derived N-sulfinyl beta-amino diene Weinreb amides. These unsaturated cyclic cis-beta-amino Weinreb amides are valuable building blocks for the asymmetric synthesis of cyclic beta-amino acid derivatives.

Abstract
Concise and asymmetric total synthesis of the title compounds are described. The key ring system was constructed using an intramolecular Schmidt reaction on a norbornenone derivative, which was subsequently subjected to ring-opening metathesis followed by reduction. An unusual isomerization of the C-6 ethyl group afforded the desired stereochemistry of the natural product. The synthesis is readily adaptable to analogue production.

Abstract
A convergent synthesis of stereodefined indolizidines and quinolizidines through chemoselective allyl transfer between 2-hydroxymethyl-substituted allylic silanes and imines is described. Overall, highly substituted heterocycles that contain three stereogenic centers and up to four fused rings can be accessed in two steps from relatively simple coupling partners.

Abstract
Lithium hexamethyldisilazide (LiHMDS) in triethylamine (Et 3N)/toluene is shown to enolize acyclic ketones and esters rapidly and with high E/ Z selectivity. Mechanistic studies reveal a dimer-based mechanism consistent with previous studies of LiHMDS/Et 3N. E/ Z equilibration occurs when <2.0 equiv of LiHMDS are used. Studies of the aldol condensation and Ireland-Claisen rearrangement of the resulting Et 3N-solvated enolates show higher and often complementary diastereoselectivities when compared with analogous reactions in THF. The Et 3N-solvated enolates also display a marked (20-fold) acceleration of the Ireland-Claisen rearrangement with evidence of autocatalysis. A possible importance of amine-solvated enolates is discussed.
