Reactivity of Monolayer-Protected Gold Nanoclusters at Dye-Sensitized Liquid/Liquid Interfaces

Fluorescent silver nanoclusters for ultrasensitive determination of chromium(VI) in aqueous solution

In this work, a simple and sensitive Cr(VI) sensor is proposed based on fluorescent polyethyleneimine-stabilized Ag nanoclusters, which allows the determination over a wide concentration range of 0.1 nM-3.0 μM and with a detection limit as low as 0.04 nΜ and a good selectivity. The quenching mechanism was discussed in terms of the absorption and fluorescence spectra, suggesting that Cr(VI) is connected to Ag nanoclusters by hydrogen bond between the oxygen atom at the vertex of tetrahedron structure of Cr(VI) and the amino nitrogen of polyethyleneimine that surrounded Ag nanoclusters and electron transfer from Ag nanoclusters to highly electron-deficient Cr(VI) results in fluorescence quenching. Despite the failure to quench the fluorescence efficiently, Cr(III) can also be measured using the proposed Ag nanoclusters by being oxidized to Cr(VI) in alkaline solution (pH ∼ 9) containing H2O2. Therefore, our approach could be used to detect Cr(VI), Cr(III) and the total chromium level in aqueous solution. In addition, Cr(VI) analysis in real water samples were satisfactory, indicating this method could be practically promising for chromium measurements.

Polyethylenimine-capped silver nanoclusters as a fluorescence probe for highly sensitive detection of folic acid through a two-step electron-transfer process

A highly sensitive folic acid (FA) detection method based on the fluorescence quenching of polyethylenimine-capped silver nanoclusters (PEI-AgNCs) was put forward. In the sensing system, FA and PEI-AgNCs were brought into close proximity to each other by electrostatic interaction, and a two-step electron-transfer process, in which the electron was transferred from FA to AgNCs through PEI molecule, led to fluorescence quenching. The fluorescence quenching efficiency of PEI-AgNCs was linearly related to the concentration of FA over the range from 0.1 nM to 2.75 μM. Good linear correlation (R(2) = 0.9981) and a detection limit of 0.032 nM were obtained under optimum conditions. Moreover, the proposed method was used for the determination of FA in real samples with satisfactory results, and those coexistent substances could not cause any significant decrease in the fluorescence intensity of AgNCs. Therefore, the proposed research system is of practical significance and application prospects.

LSPR properties of metal nanoparticles adsorbed at a liquid-liquid interface

Unlike the solid-air and solid-liquid interfaces, the optical properties of metal nanoparticles adsorbed at the liquid-liquid interface have not been theoretically exploited to date. In this work, the three dimensional finite difference time domain (3D-FDTD) method is employed to clarify the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) based optical properties of gold nanoparticles (NPs) adsorbed at the water-oil interface, including near field distribution, far field absorption and their relevance. The LSPR spectra of NPs located at a liquid-liquid interface are shown to differ significantly from those in a uniform liquid environment or at the other interfaces. The absorption spectra exhibit two distinct LSPR peaks, the positions and relative strengths of which are sensitive to the dielectric properties of each liquid and the exact positions of the NPs with respect to the interface. Precise control of the particles' position and selection of the appropriate wavelength of the excitation laser facilitates the rational design and selective excitation of localized plasmon modes for interfacial NPs, a necessary advance for the exploration of liquid-liquid interfaces via surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). According to our calculations, the SERS enhancement factor for Au nanosphere dimers at the water-oil interface can be as high as 10(7)-10(9), implying significant promise for future investigations of interfacial structure and applications of liquid-liquid interfaces towards chemical analysis.

Composite interfacial layers containing micro-size and nano-size particles

Surface layers of micro- and nanoparticles at fluid/liquid interfaces in absence and presence of surfactants are of large importance in the process of re-discovering Pickering systems, i.e. emulsions and foams stabilized by particles. The surface pressure/area isotherms of such layers can provide information about the properties of the used particles (dimensions, interfacial contact angles), the structure of interfacial layers, the interactions between the particles as well as about relaxation processes within the layers. For a correct description of Pi-A isotherms of composite surface layers containing particles the significant difference in size of these particles to that of solvent and surfactant molecules should be taken into account. Corresponding equations can be derived on the basis of the two-dimensional solution theory. The gained equations provide satisfactory agreement with experimental data and predict realistic values for the area of particles at the interface. Also equations of state and of the dilational elasticity for composite surface layers containing particles can be obtained in the framework of the presented methodology.

CdSe sensitized thin aqueous films: probing the potential distribution inside multilayer assemblies

Ultrathin polypeptide multilayer films are assembled by the sequential electrostatic adsorption of monolayers of poly-l-lysine and poly-l-glutamic acid onto carboxylic acid terminated alkanethiol-modified gold surfaces. The polypeptide multilayer films are hydrophilic, can incorporate electroactive species such as ferri/ferrocyanide, and are stable when immersed in organic solvents such as 1,2-dichloroethane. Cadmium selenide quantum dots stabilized by negatively charged citrate groups are electrostatically attached to the multilayer film assembly in order to act as photoactive species. Photocurrent responses originating from the CdSe sensitized ultrathin multilayer film are investigated as functions of the applied potential, the thickness of the film and the presence of quenchers in the organic phase. A theoretical model is proposed in order to analyze the kinetics of the photoinduced electron-transfer reactions and to probe the potential distribution within the film.
