An ab Initio Molecular Orbital Study of the Mechanism for the Gas-Phase Water-Mediated Decomposition and the Formation of Hydrates of Peroxyacetyl Nitrate (PAN)

Heterogeneous Reaction of Peroxyacetyl Nitrate on Real-World PM2.5 Aerosols: Kinetics, Influencing Factors, and Atmospheric Implications

The formation and decomposition of peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN), an important atmospheric nitrogen oxide reservoir, can impact the level and cycling of free radicals and nitrogen compounds in the atmosphere. PAN sinks are poorly understood, highlighting the importance of elucidating the heterogeneous reaction of PAN on aerosol surfaces. Here, we report for the first time the uptake behavior, kinetics, and potential mechanism of PAN uptake on real-world aerosol PM_2.5 using a flow tube system. The uptake coefficients (γ) of PAN increased non-linearly from (1.5 ± 0.7) × 10^-5 at 0% relative humidity (RH) to (9.3 ± 2.0) × 10^-5 at 80% RH. The γ decrease with increasing initial PAN concentration is consistent with the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism. Organic components of aerosols may promote heterogeneous loss of PAN through redox reactions. Higher γ occurs with higher water content, lower pH, and lower ionic strength in the aqueous phase of aerosols. The present study suggests that heterogeneous reaction of PAN on ambient aerosols plays a non-negligible role in the atmospheric PAN budget and provides new insights into the role of PAN in promoting atmospheric oxidation capacity during hazy periods with cold and wet weather conditions.

Unimolecular decomposition of acetyl peroxy radical: a potential source of tropospheric ketene

The unimolecular decomposition of acetyl peroxy radicals followed by subsequent nitration is known to lead to the formation of peroxy acetyl nitrate (PAN) in the troposphere. Using high level quantum chemical calculations, we show that the acetyl peroxy radical is a precursor in the formation of tropospheric ketene. The results show that the presence of a single or double water molecule(s) as a catalyst does not influence the decomposition reaction directly to form ketene and hydroperoxy radicals. The electronic excitation of the reactive and product complexes occurs in the wavelength range of ∼1400 nm, suggesting that the complexes undergo photoexcitation in the near IR region. The results ascertain that the dissociation of acetyl peroxy radicals into ketene and hydroperoxy radicals occurs more likely through the excitation route and the corresponding excitation wavelength reveals that the reactions are red-light driven. Three different product complexes, ketene·HO2, ketene·H2O·HO2 and ketene·(H2O)2·HO2, are formed from the reaction. The direct dynamics simulations show that the product complexes are more stable and possess a long lifetime. The calculated temperature dependent equilibrium constant of the product complexes reveals that their atmospheric abundances decrease with increasing altitudes.

Topological insights into the 1/1 diacetyl/water complex gained using a new methodological approach

The 1/1 diacetyl/water complex is of atmospheric relevance. Previous experimental and theoretical studies have focused on two isomeric forms, and geometry optimizations were carried out on them. Herein, we propose a six-step methodological approach based on topological properties to search for and characterize all of the isomeric forms of the 1/1 noncovalent diacetyl/water complex: (1) a molecular electrostatic potential (MESP) study to get an overview of the V min and V max regions on the molecular surfaces of the separate molecules (diacetyl and water); (2) a topological (QTAIM and ELF) study allowing thorough characterization of the electron densities (QTAIM) and irreducible ELF basins of the separate molecules; (3) full optimization of the predicted structures based on the interaction between complementary reaction sites; (4) energetic characterization based on a symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) analysis; (5) topological characterization of the optimized complexes; (6) analysis of the complexes in terms of orbital overlaps (natural bond orbitals, NBO analysis). Using this approach, in addition to achieving the topological characterization of the two isomeric forms already reported, a third possible isomer was identified and characterized. Hydrated complexes of atmospheric interest: rotational spectrum of diacetyl-water

The rotational spectrum of the molecular complex diacetyl-water has been measured by pulsed jet Fourier transform microwave (FTMW) spectroscopy. The water molecule acts as an electrofore and induces a dipole moment when combined with nonpolar diacetyl. Only one conformer has been observed, corresponding to the global minimum. Its shape is unambiguously established: the water moiety is linked asymmetrically to the organic molecule; it behaves as a proton donor to one of its oxygen atoms and interferes with the internal rotation of adjacent methyl group through a C-H...O interaction. Each rotational transition appears as a quintuplet, due to the internal rotation of the two methyl groups, which are nonequivalent in the adduct. From the analysis of the observed splittings, the V(3) barriers to the internal rotation of the two methyl groups have been determined to be 3.81(2) and 4.11(2) kJ/mol, respectively.

Reactions of F+(3P) and F+(1D) with Silicon Oxide. Possibility of Spin-Forbidden Processes

High level ab initio and density functional theory calculations have been carried out to study the potential energy surfaces associated with the reactions of F(+) in its (3)P ground state and in its (1)D first excited state with silicon dioxide. The structures and vibrational frequencies of the stationary points of both potential energy surfaces were obtained at the B3LYP/6-31G(d) level. Final energies were calculated at the B3LYP/6-311+G(3df,2p) and at the G3X levels of theory. [Si, O(2), F](+) singlet and triplet state cations present very different bonding characteristics. The most favorable reactions path in F(+)((3)P) + SiO(2) reactions should yield O(2) + SiF(+), while in the reactions in the first excited state, only a charge exchange process, yielding F((2)P) + SiO(2)(+)((2)A), should be observed. However, both potential energy surfaces cross each other, because although the entrance F(+)((3)P) + SiO(2) lies 34.5 kcal/mol below F(+)((1)D) + SiO(2), the global minimum of the singlet PES lies 10.3 kcal/mol below the global minimum of the triplet. The minimum energy crossing point between them is close to the global minimum, and the spin-orbit coupling is not zero, suggesting that very likely some of the products will be formed in the singlet hypersurface. The existence of instabilities and large spin-contamination in the description of some of the systems render the DFT calculations unreliable.
