Abstract
Transition metal-catalyzed addition of organometallics to aryl(alkyl)alkynes has been well known to proceed with the regioselectivity in forming a carbon-carbon bond at the alkyl-substituted carbon (β-addition). Herein, the reverse regiochemistry with high selectivity in giving 1,1-diarylalkenes (α-addition) was realized in the reaction of arylboronic acids with aryl(alkyl)alkynes by use of a rhodium catalyst coordinated with a chiral diene ligand, whereas the arylation of the same alkynes proceeded with the usual regioselectivity (β-addition) in the presence of a rhodium/DM-BINAP catalyst. The regioselectivity can be switched by the choice of ligands on the rhodium catalysts. This reverse regioselectivity also enabled the catalytic asymmetric synthesis of phoenix-like axially chiral alkylidene dihydroanthracenes with high enantioselectivity through an α-addition/1,4-migration/cyclization sequence.

Abstract
Seven-membered polycyclic architectures, widely present in natural products and molecular drugs, are challenging synthetic targets. However, methods for synthesizing fused medium-sized bicyclo[m.n.0] ring systems, including the benzo-cycloheptane systems, are still urgent. Herein we describe a base-induced ring expansion as a general strategy to construct a wide range of fused seven-membered ring systems. The application of this method was demonstrated by the efficient total syntheses of two sesquiterpenoids, plecarpenene and plecarpenone, both bearing a fused bicyclo[5.3.0]decane skeleton.

Abstract
β-Keto acids, ideal surrogates of inactive ketones, play an important role in organic synthesis. The asymmetric decarboxylative reaction using β-keto acids is the one which is being studied the most. Herein we present a comprehensive review on this research topic, which is generally classified according to different catalytic systems and chiral induction modes. Additionally, some extended utilities of these methodologies for synthesizing bioactive compounds were also summarized. This review will facilitate the synthetic community to understand the role of β-keto acids in asymmetric reactions, providing many new opportunities for further exploration in this field.

Abstract
A set of rhenium-catalyzed arylation-acyl cyclizations between (hetero)arylmagnesium halides and enol lactones through a cascade C(sp2 )-C(sp2 )/C(sp2 )-C(sp2 ) bond formation under mild reaction conditions has been developed. Indeed, a wide range of functional groups on both organomagnesium halides and enol lactones is well tolerated by the simple rhenium catalysis, thus furnishing polyfunctionalized indenones in one-pot fashion and with complete control of the regioselectivity. Moreover, this approach also provides a straightforward synthetic route to neolignan and (iso)pauciflorol F. Mechanistic studies demonstrated that the reaction involves a sequence of syn-carborhenation and intramolecular nucleophilic addition.

Abstract
Intermolecular addition of enols and enolates to unactivated alkynes was proved to be a simple and powerful method for carbon-carbon bond formation. Up to date, a catalytic asymmetric version of alkyne with 1,3-dicarbonyl compound has not been realized. Herein, we achieve the catalytic asymmetric intermolecular addition of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds to unactivated 1-alkynes attributing to the synergistic activation of chiral N,N′-dioxide-indium(III) or nickel(II) Lewis acid and achiral gold(I) π-acid. A range of β-ketoamides, β-ketoesters and 1,3-diketones transform to the corresponding products with a tetra-substituted chiral center in good yields with good e.r. values. Besides, a possible catalytic cycle and a transition state model are proposed to illustrate the reaction process and the origin of chiral induction based on the experimental investigations. Although enols and enolates addition to unactivated alkynes is used for carbon-carbon bond modification a catalytic asymmetric alkyne with 1,3-dicarbonyl compound has been elusive. Here, the authors achieve this using the synergistic activation of chiral N,N′-dioxide-indium(III) or nickel(II) Lewis acid and achiral gold(I) π-acid.”

Abstract
A rhodium-catalyzed direct insertion of ethylene into a relatively unstrained carbon-carbon bond in 1-indanones is reported, which provides a two-carbon ring expansion strategy for preparing seven-membered cyclic ketones. As many 1-indanones are commercially available and ethylene is inexpensive, this strategy simplifies synthesis of benzocycloheptenones that are valuable synthetic intermediates for bioactive compounds but challenging to prepare otherwise. In addition, the reaction is byproduct-free, redox neutral, and tolerant of a wide range of functional groups, which may have implications on unconventional strategic bond disconnections for preparing complex cyclic molecules.

Abstract
A highly efficient protocol for the synthesis of polysubstituted cyano carbazoles has been developed. This process is realized through the tandem reactions of Cs2CO3 promoted C-C σ-bond activation of α-cyano ketones followed by Fe-catalyzed selective C-H and/or C-C bond activations. Two of the sp2 C-H bonds are functionalized, and two of the C-C σ-bonds are cleaved involving a 1,2-acyl migration during the reaction process.

Abstract
The construction of arene-fused cyclic β-ketoesters from 2-iodoaryl esters and 1,1-cyclopropane diesters is detailed. The synthetic method takes advantage of a CuI·SMe2-mediated homoconjugate addition followed by a decarboxylative Dieckmann cyclization to afford valuable polycyclic building blocks. Various iodoaryl esters and 1,1-cyclopropane diesters were evaluated, and the limitations of both reactions are discussed. Several mechanistic probes are detailed and synthetic applications are described.

Abstract
The reaction of α-thioketones and alkynes in the presence of a rhenium catalyst, [HRe(CO)(4)](n), gave γ-thio-α,β-unsaturated ketones in excellent yields. The alkynes were inserted into the carbon-sulfur bond of the α-thioketones, and isomerization of a double bond provided the products with high regio- and stereoselectivities. This reaction also proceeded in an intramolecular fashion.

Abstract
A new method is described for the regioselective synthesis of multisubstituted pyridine derivatives. Treatment of N-acetyl β-enamino ketones with alkynes in the presence of the rhenium catalyst, Re(2)(CO)(10), gives multisubstituted pyridines regioselectively. In this reaction, the N-acetyl moieties are important for the selective formation of the multisubstituted pyridines. This reaction proceeds via insertion of alkynes into a carbon-carbon single bond of β-enamino ketones, intramolecular nucleophilic cyclization, and elimination of acetic acid.

Abstract
With their fascinating biological profiles and stunningly complex molecular architectures, the polycyclic polyprenylated acylphloroglucinols (PPAPs) have long provided a fertile playing field for synthetic organic chemists. In particular, the recent advent of innovative synthetic methods and strategies together with C-C bond-forming reactions and asymmetric catalysis have revitalized this field tremendously. Consequently, PPAP targets which once seemed beyond reach have now been synthesized. This Review aims to highlight the recent achievements in the total synthesis of PPAPs, as well as notable methods developed for the construction of the bicyclo[3.3.1] core of these chemically and biologically intriguing molecules.
