Abstract
Octacyanidometallates have been successfully employed in the design of heterometallic coordination systems offering a spectacular range of desired physical properties with great potential for technological applications. The [M(CN)8]n- ions comprise a series of complexes of heavy transition metals in high oxidation states, including NbIV, MoIV/V, WIV/V, and ReV. Since the discovery of the pioneering bimetallic {MnII4[MIV(CN)8]2} and {MnII9[MV(CN)8]6} (M = Mo, W) molecules in 2000, octacyanidometallates were fruitfully explored as precursors for the construction of diverse d-d or d-f coordination clusters and frameworks which could be obtained in the crystalline form under mild synthetic conditions. The primary interest in [M(CN)8]n--based networks was focused on their application as molecule-based magnets exhibiting long-range magnetic ordering resulting from the efficient intermetallic exchange coupling mediated by cyanido bridges. However, in the last few years, octacyanidometallate-based materials proved to offer varied and remarkable functionalities, becoming efficient building blocks for the construction of molecular nanomagnets, magnetic coolers, spin transition materials, photomagnets, solvato-magnetic materials, including molecular magnetic sponges, luminescent magnets, chiral magnets and photomagnets, SHG-active magnetic materials, pyro- and ferroelectrics, ionic conductors as well as electrochemical containers. Some of these materials can be processed into the nanoscale opening the route towards the development of magnetic, optical and electronic devices. In this review, we summarise all important achievements in the field of octacyanidometallate-based functional materials, with the particular attention to the most recent advances, and present a thorough discussion on non-trivial structural and electronic features of [M(CN)8]n- ions, which are purposefully explored to introduce desired physical properties and their combinations towards advanced multifunctional materials.

Abstract
A series of cyano-bridged homotrinuclear Re(I) complexes with the general formula of {[Re]'[Re][Re]'}+ {[Re]' = -[ReI(CO)2(LL)(X)]; [Re] = -[(NC)ReI(CO)2(phen)(CN)]-; LL = diimine, diphosphine, or two carbonyl ligands; X = triphenylphosphine or carbonyl ligand} and the corresponding mononuclear complex analogues were synthesized. The structures of most of the trinuclear Re(I) complexes have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The relative orientations of peripheral to central Re(I) units in these structures vary considerably. The photophysical properties of these trinuclear Re(I) complexes have been examined. Except for the trinuclear Re(I) complex with Br2phen ligand, all the other triads display orange to red photoluminescence derived from the 3MLCT [dπ(Re) → π*(phen)] origin of the central Re(I) unit, suggestive of efficient energy transfer between the peripheral chromophores and the central unit. In addition to the efficient energy transfer processes between the Re(I) chromophores in these trinuclear complexes, the ability of the [NC-Re-CN] bridging ligands for electronic coupling between the rhenium metal centers is evidenced by ca. 0.2-0.3 V separation of the two rhenium metal-based oxidation potentials of the chemically equivalent peripheral units.

Abstract
Controllable quantum systems are under active investigation for quantum computing, secure information processing, and nonvolatile memory. The optical manipulation of spin quantum states provides an important strategy for quantum control with both temporal and spatial resolution. Challenges in increasing the lifetime of photoinduced magnetic states at T > 200 K have hindered progress toward utilizing photomagnetic materials in quantum device architectures. Here we demonstrate reversible light-induced magnetization switching in an organic thin film at device operating temperatures of 300-330 K. By utilizing photochromic ligands that undergo structural changes in the solid state, the changes in ligand field associated with photoisomerization modulate the ligand field and in turn the oxidation and spin state of a bound metal center. Green light irradiation (λexc = 550 nm) of a spirooxazine cobalt-dioxolene complex induces photoisomerization of the ligand that in turn triggers a reversible intramolecular charge-transfer coupled spin-transition process at the cobalt center. The generation of photomagnetic states through conversion between a low-spin Co(III)-semiquinone doublet and a high-spin Co(II)-bis-semiquinone sextet state has been demonstrated in both solution and the solid state and is described as a photoisomerization-induced spin-charge excited state (PISCES) process. The high transition temperature (325 K) and long-lived photoinduced state (τ = 10 s at 300 K) are dictated by the photochromic ligand. Theory provides effective modeling of the phenomenon and long-term strategies to further modulate the lifetimes of photomagnetic states for quantum information technologies at the single molecule level.

Abstract
Mesostructure engineering is a potential avenue towards the property control of coordination polymers in addition to the traditional structure design on an atomic/molecular scale. Mesoframes, as a class of mesostructures, have short diffusion pathways for guest species and thus can be an ideal platform for fast storage of guest ions. We report a synthesis of Prussian Blue analogue mesoframes by top-down etching of cubic crystals. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the surfaces of the cubic crystals were selectively removed by HCl, leaving the corners, edges, and the cores connected together. The mesoframes were used as a host for the reversible insertion of sodium ions with the help of electrochemistry. The electrochemical intercalation/de-intercalation of Na+ ions in the mesoframes was highly reversible even at a high rate (166.7 C), suggesting that the mesoframes could be a promising cathode material for aqueous sodium ion batteries with excellent rate performance and cycling stability.

Abstract
Trinuclear chiral (LH)2L2Cu3 (LH = 1,3-diamino-2-propanol, bdapH) assemblies linked by octacyanidometalate(IV) form isostructural one-dimensional (1D) chains consisting of right- and left-handed helixes arranged in an alternate manner: [(bdapH)2(bdap)2Cu(II)3][M(IV)(CN)8]·H2O (M = Mo 1, W 2). Each chain displays helicity with a long pitch around 17.2 Å. The direction of the helix rotation is strictly connected with the conformation of the (LH)2L2Cu3 unit. Right-handed helixes are based on Δ-S,S-(LH)2L2Cu3, whereas left-handed ones contain Λ-R,R-(LH)2L2Cu3 units. Magnetic studies reveal antiferromagnetic interactions through alkoxo-bridges inside trinuclear Cu(II) nodes leading to an ST = 1/2 ground state for both assemblies.

Abstract
The elaboration of coordination networks' nano-objects on surfaces can be realized by sequential growth in solution (SGS). This bottom-up strategy gives the possibility to control the size, the isolation and the organization of the objects with a precision going up to the molecular scale. Detailed descriptions of the growth of the nickel(II)-iron(II) Prussian blue analog and of the copper-molybdenum cyanide-bridged coordination network are reported to give insight about the mechanisms of the growth. Then a comparative XPS analysis has been performed to explain the different reactivity of the precursors of the growth of the nickel(II)-iron(II) and nickel(II)-chromium(III) Prussian blue analogs. This perspective article proves that SGS can be optimized for each coordination system to build molecular superstructures on surfaces, with interesting physical properties towards chemical devices.

Abstract
We report a novel method to prepare patterns of nanoparticles over large areas of the substrate. This method is based on the adsorption of the negatively charged nanoparticles dispersed in an aqueous subphase onto a monolayer of the phospholipid dipalmitoyl-l-α-phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) at the air-water interface. It has been used to prepare patterns of nanoparticles of Prussian blue analogues (PBA) of different size (K(0.25)Ni[Fe(CN)(6)](0.75) (NiFe), K(0.25)Ni[Cr(CN)(6)](0.75) (NiCr), K(0.25)Ni[Co(CN)(6)](0.75) (NiCo), Cs(0.4)Co[Cr(CN)(6)](0.8) (CsCoCr), and Cs(0.4)Co[Fe(CN)(6)](0.9) (CsCoFe)). The behavior of DPPC monolayer at the air-water interface in the presence of the subphase of PBA nanoparticles has been studied by the compression isotherms and Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) images. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) of the transferred films on mica substrates shows that patterns of the nanoparticles are observed for a 10(-4) M concentration of the subphase, based on the nanoparticle precursors, at surface pressures between 1 and 6 mN/m and transfer velocities from 10 to 80 mm/min. Vertical, horizontal, or tilted fringes of the nanoparticles with respect to the transfer direction can be obtained depending on the transfer velocity and surface pressure.

Abstract
Sequential growth in solution (SGS) was performed for the magnetic cyanide-bridged network obtained from the reaction of Ni(H(2)O)(2+) and Cr(CN)(6)(3-) (referred to as NiCr) on a Si(100) wafer already functionalized by a Ni(II) complex. The growth process led to isolated dots and a low coverage of the surface. We used the NiFe network as a template to improve the growth of the magnetic network. We elaborated alternate NiFe (paramagnetic)-NiCr (ferromagnetic) ultrathin films around 6 nm thick. The magnetic behaviour confirmed the alternate structure with the ferromagnetic zones isolated between the paramagnetic ones since the evolution of the blocking temperature is consistent with the evolution of the layers' thickness expected from the SGS process.

Abstract
Controlling the elaboration of Coordination Networks (CoNet) on surfaces at the nanoscale remains a challenge. One suitable technique is the Sequential Growth in Solution (SGS), which has the advantage to be simple, cheap and fast. We addressed two issues in this article: i) the controlled synthesis of ultra thin films of CoNet (thickness lower than 10 nm), and ii) the investigation of the influence of the precursors' concentration on the growth process. Si(100) was used because it is possible to prepare atomically flat Si-H surfaces, which is necessary for the growth of ultrathin films. We used, as a model system, the sequential reactions of K(4)[Fe(II)(CN)(6)] and [Ni(II)(H(2)O)(6)]Cl(2) that occur by the substitution of the water molecules in the coordination sphere of Ni(II) by the nitrogen atoms of ferrocyanide. We demonstrated that the nature of the deposited film depends mainly on the relative concentration of the anchoring sites versus the precursors' solution. Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier Transformed Infra Red (ATR-FTIR), X-ray reflectivity, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) were used to characterize the steps of the growth process.

Abstract
The study of paramagnetic compounds based on 4d and 5d transition metals is an emerging research topic in the field of molecular magnetism. An essential driving force for the interest in this area is the fact that heavier metal ions introduce important attributes to the physical properties of paramagnetic compounds. Among the attractive characteristics of heavier elements vis-à-vis magnetism are the diffuse nature of their d orbitals, their strong magnetic anisotropy owing to enhanced spin-orbit coupling, and their diverse structural and redox properties. This critical review is intended to introduce readers to the topic and to report recent progress in this area. It is not fully comprehensive in scope although we strived to include all relevant topics and a large subset of references in the area. Herein we provide a survey of the history and current status of research that has been conducted on the topic of second and third row transition metal molecular magnetism. The article is organized according to the nature of the precursor building blocks with special topics being highlighted as illustrations of the special role of heavier transition metal ions in the field. This paper is addressed to readers who are interested in molecular magnetism and the application of coordination chemistry principles to materials synthesis (231 references).

Abstract
This article presents the first example of ultra-small (3-4 nm) magneto-luminescent cyano-bridged coordination polymer nanoparticles Ln0.33(3+)Gdx3+/[Mo(CN)8]3- (Ln=Eu (x=0.34), Tb (x=0.35)) enwrapped by a natural biocompatible polymer chitosan. The aqueous colloidal solutions of these nanoparticles present a luminescence characteristic of the corresponding lanthanides (5D0→7F0-4 (Eu3+) or the 5D4→7F6-2 (Tb3+)) under UV excitation and a green luminescence of the chitosan shell under excitation in the visible region. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) efficiency, i.e. the nuclear relaxivity, measurements performed for Ln0.33(3+)Gdx3+/[Mo(CN)8]3- nanoparticles show r1p and r2p relaxivities slightly higher than or comparable to the ones of the commercial paramagnetic compounds Gd-DTPA® or Omniscan® indicating that our samples may potentially be considered as a positive contrast agent for MRI. The in vitro studies performed on these nanoparticles show that they maybe internalized into human cancer and normal cells and well detected by fluorescence at the single cell level. They present high stability even at low pH and lack of cytotoxicity both in human cancer and normal cells.

Abstract
Photomagnetism in molecular systems is a new development in molecular magnetism. It traces back to 1982 and 1984 when a transient effect and then the light-induced excited-spin-state-trapping effect was discovered in spin-crossover complexes. The present contribution gives a definition of the phenomenon, a process that changes the magnetism of a (molecular) system after absorption of a photon. It is limited to the discussion of photomagnetism based on metal-metal electron transfer in clusters and extended molecule-based magnets. The paper is organized around the main pairs of spin bearers, which allowed us to evidence and to study the phenomenon: Cu-Mo, Co-Fe, and Co-W. For each metallic pair, we report and discuss the conditions of appearance of the effect and its characteristics, both in extended structures and in molecular units: structure, spectroscopy, magnetism, thermodynamics and kinetics, and applications. We conclude with some brief prospects. The field is in rapid expansion. We are convinced that the interaction of photons with magnetized matter, to provide original magnetic properties, will meet more and more interest in the future.

Abstract
Designing new objects in the perspective of creating useful functionalities at the nanoscale has been the subject of intense research efforts during the last 20 years. Coordination nanoparticles (CNPs) emerged less than 10 years ago, opening new possibilities for the design of bistable molecule-based objects where magnetism may be controlled or tuned by an external perturbation (light irradiation, temperature change, magnetic field, etc.). Magnetic cyanide-bridged networks have been shown to possess the potential to be shaped as nanoparticles, leading to new functionalities. Light- and temperature-induced bistable nanoparticles were thus discovered. Luminescent CNPs were also prepared, demonstrating the large potential of these objects.
