Abstract
Cheap, stable and easy-to-handle Werner ammine salts have been known for more than a century; but they have been rarely used in organic synthesis. Herein, we report that the Werner hexammine complex [Ni(NH3 )6 ]Cl2 can be used as both a nitrogen and a catalytic nickel source that allow for the efficient amination of aryl chlorides in the presence of a catalytic amount of bipyridine ligand under the irradiation of 390-395 nm light without the need of any additional catalysts. More than 80 aryl chlorides, including more than 20 drug molecules, were aminated, demonstrating the practicality and generality of this method in synthetic chemistry. A slow NH3 release mechanism is in operation, obviating the problem of catalyst poisoning. Still interestingly, we show that the Werner salt can be easily recovered and reused, solving the problem of difficult recovery of transition metal nickel catalysts. The protocol thus provides an efficient new strategy for the synthesis of primary aryl amines.

Abstract
The development of metal complexes that function as both photocatalyst and cross-coupling catalyst remains a challenging research topic. So far, progress has been shown in palladium(0) excited-state transition metal catalysis for the construction of carbon-carbon bonds where the oxidative addition of alkyl/aryl halides to zero-valent palladium (Pd0 ) is achievable at room temperature. In contrast, the analogous process with divalent palladium (PdII ) is uphill and endothermic. For the first time, we report that divalent palladium can act as a light-absorbing species that undergoes double excitation to realize carbon-nitrogen (C-N) cross-couplings under air. Differently substituted aryl halides can be applied in the mild, and selective cross-coupling amination using palladium acetate as both photocatalyst and cross-coupling catalyst at room temperature. Density functional theory studies supported by mechanistic investigations provide insight into the reaction mechanism.

Abstract
Among phenol-derived electrophiles, aryl sulfamates are attractive substrates since they can be employed as directing groups for C-H functionalization prior to catalysis. However, their use in C-N coupling is limited only to Ni catalysis. Here, we describe a Pd-based catalyst with a broad scope for the amination of aryl sulfamates. We show that the N-methyl-2-aminobiphenyl palladacycle supported by the PCyp2ArXyl2 ligand (Cyp = cyclopentyl; ArXyl2 = 2,6-bis(2,6-dimethylphenyl)phenyl) efficiently catalyzes the C-N coupling of aryl sulfamates with a variety of nitrogen nucleophiles, including anilines, primary and secondary alkyl amines, heteroaryl amines, N-heterocycles, and primary amides. DFT calculations support that the oxidative addition of the aryl sulfamate is the rate-determining step. The C-N coupling takes place through a cationic pathway in the polar protic medium.

Abstract
The dialkyl-ortho-biaryl class of phosphines, commonly known as Buchwald-type ligands, are among the most important phosphines in Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling. These ligands have also been successfully applied to several synthetically valuable Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling methodologies and, as demonstrated in this work, are top performing ligands in Ni-catalyzed Suzuki Miyaura Coupling (SMC) and C-N coupling reactions, even outperforming commonly employed bisphosphines like dppf in many circumstances. However, little is known about their structure-reactivity relationships (SRRs) with Ni, and limited examples of well-defined, catalytically relevant Ni complexes with Buchwald-type ligands exist. In this work, we report the analysis of Buchwald-type phosphine SRRs in four representative Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. Our study was guided by data-driven classification analysis, which together with mechanistic organometallic studies of structurally characterized Ni(0), Ni(I), and Ni(II) complexes allowed us to rationalize reactivity patterns in catalysis. Overall, we expect that this study will serve as a platform for further exploration of this ligand class in organonickel chemistry as well as in the development of new Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling methodologies.

Abstract
The synthesis of primary anilines via sustainable methods remains a challenge in organic synthesis. We report a photocatalytic protocol for the selective synthesis of primary anilines via cross‐coupling of a wide range of aryl/heteroaryl halides with sodium azide using a photocatalyst powder consisting of nickel(II) deposited on mesoporous carbon nitride (Ni‐mpg‐CNx). This heterogeneous photocatalyst contains a high surface area with a visible light‐absorbing and adaptive “built‐in” solid‐state ligand for the integrated catalytic Ni site. The method displays a high functional group tolerance, requires mild reaction conditions, and benefits from easy recovery and reuse of the photocatalyst powder. Thereby, it overcomes the need of complex ligand scaffolds required in homogeneous catalysis, precious metals and elevated temperatures/pressures in existing protocols of primary anilines synthesis. The reported heterogeneous Ni‐mpg‐CNx holds potential for applications in the academic and industrial synthesis of anilines and exploration of other photocatalytic transformations.

Abstract
AbstractTrivalent-phosphorus-containing molecules are widely used in fields ranging from catalysis to materials science. Efficient catalytic methods for their modifications, providing straightforward access to novel hybrid structures with superior catalytic activities, are highly desired to facilitate reaction improvement or discovery. We have recently developed new methods for synthesizing polyfunctional phosphines by C–C cross-couplings through rhodium-catalyzed C–H bond activation. These methods use a native P(III) atom as a directing group, and can be used in regioselective late-stage functionalization of phosphine ligands. Interestingly, some of the modified phosphines outperform their parents in Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions.1 Introduction2 Early Examples of Transition-Metal-Catalyzed P(III)-Directed C–H Bond Activation/Functionalizations3 Synthesis of Polyfunctional Biarylphosphines by Late-Stage Alkylation: Application in Carboxylation Reactions4 Synthesis of Polyfunctional Biarylphosphines by Late-Stage Alkenylation: Application in Amidation Reactions5 Conclusion

Abstract
A family of biaryl phosphacyclic ligands derived from phobane and phosphatrioxa-adamantane frameworks is described. The rigid biaryl phosphacycles are efficient for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of aryl bromides and chlorides. In particular, coupling reactions of the challenging sterically hindered and heterocyclic substrates were viable at room temperature.

Abstract
An atom-economical and efficient route for the direct amidation and amination of aryl C-H bonds using our synthesized recyclable heterogeneous Cu-MnO catalyst is reported here. The direct C-H amidation was carried out using a simple amide without any preactivated coupling partner, and simple air was used as the sole oxidant. The reaction proceeds very smoothly with a broad range of substrates containing numerous functional groups in very good to excellent yields. Direct C-H aminations with a secondary amine were carried out under base-, ligand-, and external oxidant-free conditions in very good to excellent yields in very mild conditions. Both the amidation and amination can be scaled up on a gram scale with similar yields. The major advantage is that our catalyst is recyclable and reused several times without any significant loss of reactivity.

Abstract
As part of our continuing search for potent inhibitors of tubulin polymerization, two novel series of 42 10-(4-phenylpiperazine-1-carbonyl)acridin-9(10H)-ones and N-benzoylated acridones were synthesized on the basis of a retrosynthetic approach. All newly synthesized compounds were tested for antiproliferative activity and interaction with tubulin. Several analogs potently inhibited tumor cell growth. Among the compounds tested, 10-(4-(3-methoxyphenyl)piperazine-1-carbonyl)acridin-9(10H)-one (17c) exhibited excellent growth inhibitory effects on 93 tumor cell lines, with an average GI50 value of 5.4 nM. We were able to show that the strong cytotoxic effects are caused by disruption of tubulin polymerization, as supported by the EBI (N,N'-Ethylenebis(iodoacetamide)) assay and the fact that the most potent inhibitors of cancer cell growth turned out to be the most efficacious tubulin polymerization inhibitors. Potencies were nearly comparable or superior to those of the antimitotic reference compounds. Closely related to this, the most active analogs inhibited cell cycling at the G2/M phase at concentrations down to 30 nM and induced apoptosis in K562 leukemia cells. We believe that our work not only proves the excellent suitability of the acridone scaffold for the design of potent tubulin polymerization inhibitors but also enables synthetic access to further potentially interesting N-acylated acridones.

Abstract
Terphenyl(bisamino)phosphines have been identified as effective ligands in cationic gold(i) complexes for the hydroamination of acetylenes. These systems are related to Buchwald phosphines and their steric properties have been evaluated. Effective hydroamination was noted even at low catalyst loadings and a series of cationic gold(i) complexes has been structurally characterized clearly indicating stabilizing effects through gold-arene interactions.

Abstract
Steric bulk has been recognized as a central design principle for supporting ligands in the widely utilized Buchwald-Hartwig amination. In a recent example, it was shown that a Pd-catalyst carrying a phosphine ligand can successfully aminate aryl halides using ammonia as the nitrogen source. Interestingly, the chemoselectivity of this reaction was found to depend on the steric demand of the phosphine ligand. Whereas a sterically less demanding phosphine affords diphenylamine as the major product, it was shown that the amination reaction can be stopped after the first amination to give aniline if a sterically more encumbering phosphine ligand is used. Density functional theory calculations were carried out to examine the relationship between the steric demand of the phosphine ligand and the chemoselectivity. It was found that the key feature that leads to the chemoselectivity is the ability of the phosphine ligand to rotate the biaryl moiety of the ligand away from the Pd-center upon amine addition to release some of the steric crowding from the Pd-coordination site.

Abstract
Through targeted high-throughput experimentation (HTE), we have identified the Pd/AdBippyPhos catalyst system as an effective and general method to construct densely functionalized N,N-diaryl sulfonamide motifs relevant to medicinal chemistry. AdBippyPhos is particularly effective for the installation of heteroaromatic groups. Computational steric parametrization of the investigated ligands reveals the potential importance of remote steric demand, where a large cone angle combined with an accessible Pd center is correlated to successful catalysts for C-N coupling reactions.

Abstract
Understanding the nature of the intermediate species operating within a palladium catalytic cycle is crucial for developing efficient cross-coupling reactions. Even though the XPhos/Pd(OAc)2 catalytic system has found numerous applications, the nature of the active catalytic species remains elusive. A Pd0 complex ligated to XPhos has been detected and characterized in situ for the first time using cyclic voltammetry and NMR techniques. In the presence of XPhos, Pd(OAc)2 initially associates with the ligand to form a complex in solution, which has been characterized as PdII (OAc)2 (XPhos). This PdII center is then reduced to the Pd0 (XPhos)2 species by an intramolecular process. This study also sheds light on the formation of PdI -PdI dimers. Finally, a kinetic study probes a dissociative mechanism for the oxidative addition with aryl halides involving Pd0 (XPhos) as the reactive species in equilibrium with the unreactive Pd0 (XPhos)2 . Remarkably, the reportedly poorly reactive PhCl reacts at room temperature in the oxidative addition, which confirms the crucial role of the XPhos ligand in the activation of aryl chlorides.

Abstract
Over the past three decades, Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions have become a mainstay of organic synthesis. In particular, catalysts derived from biaryl monophosphines have shown wide utility in forming C-N bonds under mild reaction conditions. This work summarizes a variety of C-N cross-coupling reactions using biaryl monophosphines as supporting ligands, with the goal of directing synthetic chemists towards the ligands and conditions best suited for a particular coupling.
