Self-assembly of chiral luminescent lanthanide coordination bundles

Electronic Structure of a Neodymium(III) Tris(oxidiacetate) Complex from Luminescence Data and Ab Initio Calculations

Neodymium(III) is a near-infrared emissive and magnetic ion, which has found use in various high-technology applications. Yet, accurate predictions of the luminescent and magnetic properties of neodymium(III) based on the coordination environment remain to be done. Guidelines exist, but to build structure-property relationships for this element, more data are needed. Herein, we present a high-symmetry starting point. The tris(oxidiacetate) complex of neodymium(III) was prepared and crystallized, and access to the experimentally determined structure allowed us to quantify the symmetry of the compound and to perform calculations directly on the same structure that is investigated experimentally. The luminescent properties were determined and the electronic structure was computed using state-of-the-art ab initio methods. All electronic transitions in the range from 490 to 1400 nm were mapped experimentally. Using a Boltzmann population analysis, the combination of the excitation and emission spectra revealed the crystal field splitting of the 18 lowest-energy Kramers levels that experimentally could be unambiguously resolved. This assignment was supported by ab initio calculations, and the crystal field splitting was well reproduced. The electronic structure reported for the tris(oxidiacetate) complex was used to deduce the coordination structure in aqueous solution. Finally, the results are compared to empirical trends in the literature for the electronic structure of neodymium(III).

Dinuclear enantiopure Ln3+ complexes with (S-) and (R-) 2-phenylbutyrate ligands. Luminescence, CPL and magnetic properties

The reaction of Ln(NO3)2·6H2O (Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy, Tm and Yb) with the respective enantiopure (R)-(-)-2-phenylbutyric or (S)-(+)-2-phenylbutyric acid (R/S-2-HPhBut) and 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (Bphen) allows the isolation of chiral dinuclear compounds of the formula [Ln2(μ-R/S-2-PhBut)4(R/S-2PhBut)2(Bphen)2] where Ln = Nd3+ (R/S-Nd-a), Sm3+ (R/S-Sm-a), Eu3+ (R/S-Eu-a), Tb3+ (R/S-Tb-a and R/S-Tb-b), Dy3+ (R/S-Dy-a and R/S-Dy-b), Tm3+ (R/S-Tm-b) and Yb3+ (R/S-Yb-b). Single crystal X-ray diffraction was performed for compounds S-Eu-a and S-Tm-b. Powder crystal X-ray diffraction was performed for all complexes. From the crystallographic data two different structural motifs were found which are referred to as structure type a and structure type b. In structure type a, the Ln3+ atoms are bridged through four R or S-2-PhBut ligands with two different kinds of coordination modes whereas in structure type b the two Ln3+ atoms are bridged through four R or S-2-PhBut ligands showing only one kind of coordination mode. For those lanthanide ions exhibiting both structure types, Tb3+ and Dy3+, a difference in the luminescence and magnetism behavior is observed. All compounds (except R/S-Tm-b) exhibit sensitized luminescence, notably the Eu3+ and Tb3+ analogues. Circular Dichroism (CD) and Circular Polarized Luminescence (CPL) in the solid state and in 1 mM dichloromethane (DCM) solutions are reported, leading to improved chiroptical properties for the DCM solutions. The asymmetry factor (glum) in 1 mM DCM is ±0.02 (+ for R-Eu-a) for the magnetically allowed transition 5D0 → 7F1 and ±0.03 (+ for R-Tb-a and R-Tb-b) for the 5D4 → 7F5 transition. Magnetic properties of all compounds were studied and the Dy3+ compound with the structural motif b (R-Dy-b) shows Single Molecular Magnet (SMM) behavior under a 0 T magnetic field. However, R-Dy-a is a field-induced SMM.

Enantioselective Synthesis of Homochiral Hierarchical Nd8Fe3-Oxo Cluster from Racemic Nd9Fe2-Oxo Cluster

Enantioselective synthesis of homochiral rare earth clusters is still a great challenge. In this work, we developed an efficient "cluster to cluster" approach, that is, a pair of enantiomerical R/S-{Nd8Fe3}-oxo clusters were successfully obtained from the presynthesized racemic {Nd9Fe2}-oxo cluster. R/S-hydrobenzoin ligands trigger the transformation of the pristine clusters by an SN2-like mechanism. Compared to the pristine cluster with an achiral core, the new cluster exhibits hierarchical chirality, from ligand chirality to interface chirality, then to helix chirality, and finally to supramolecular double helix chirality. The spectral experiments monitored the transformation and confirmed distinctly structure-related optical activity. The enantiomeric pure cluster also exhibits a potential asymmetric catalytic activity.

Temperature-dependent NIR-CPL spectra of chiral Yb(III) complexes

Chiral, enantiopure Yb(III) complexes exhibit circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in the near infrared (NIR) wavelength region. This CPL is quantified by the dissymmetry factor (glum). The excited state 2F5/2 consists of six mJ' states degenerated in three Stark levels, due to the crystal-field splitting (CFS), which are populated in accordance with the Boltzmann distribution. Consequently, room temperature CPL spectra are the sum of various - either positive or negative - contributions, that are practically impossible to quantify. To address this issue, an advanced setup enabling CPL measurements over a broad temperature range (300 to 4 K) has been developed. The interrelation of CFS, glum and temperature was explored using a pair of enantiopure Yb(III) complexes, highlighting the individual contribution of each crystal-field sublevel to the overall CPL spectrum, as anticipated by simulations performed in the framework of multireference wave-functions. Hence, the CPL spectra of chiral lanthanide complexes were found to be indeed strongly temperature-dependent, as is the glum dissymmetry factor, as a consequence of the variation in thermal sublevel population.

Ligand Chirality Transfer from Solution State to the Crystalline Self-Assemblies in Circularly Polarized Luminescence (CPL) Active Lanthanide Systems

The synthesis of a family of chiral and enantiomerically pure pyridyl-diamide (pda) ligands that upon complexation with europium [Eu(CF3SO3)3] result in chiral complexes with metal centered luminescence is reported; the sets of enantiomers giving rise to both circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signatures. The solid-state structures of these chiral metallosupramolecular systems are determined using X-ray diffraction showing that the ligand chirality is transferred from solution to the solid state. This optically favorable helical packing arrangement is confirmed by recording the CPL spectra from the crystalline assembly by using steady state and enantioselective differential chiral contrast (EDCC) CPL Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy (CPL-LSCM) where the two enantiomers can be clearly distinguished.

Subtle adjustments for constructing multi-nuclear luminescent lanthanide organic polyhedra with triazole-based chelates

Controlled self-assembly of predetermined multi-nuclear lanthanide organic polyhedra (LOPs) still presents a challenge, primarily due to the unpredictable coordination numbers and labile coordination geometries of lanthanide ions. In this study, through introducing triazole-based chelates to increase the chelating angle of C2-symmetric linear ligands and stabilize the coordination geometry of Eu(III) centers, M4L6-type (M = EuIII, L = ligand) tetrahedra were efficiently synthesized, especially a biphenyl-bridged ligand which is well known to form M2L3-type helicates. A series of LOPs were formed and characterized by high-resolution electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectroscopy (ESI-TOF-MS) and X-ray crystallography. Moreover, the europium complexes exhibit bright emission (luminescence quantum yield up to 42.4%) and circularly polarized luminescence properties (|glum| up to 4.5 × 10-2). This study provides a feasible strategy for constructing multi-nuclear luminescent LOPs towards potential applications.

Synthesis, characterization, and heparin-binding study of a self-assembled p-cymene-Ru(II) metallocycle based on a 4-amino-1,8-naphthalimide Tröger's base supramolecular scaffold

We report the very first example of a self-assembled p-cymene-Ru(II) metallocycle based on a green emitting 4-amino-1,8-naphthalimide Tröger's base (TBNap) supramolecular scaffold. A new cleft-shaped TBNap-derived di-4-picolyl donor was synthesized and reacted in a 2 : 2 stoichiometry ratio with a dinuclear Ru(II) acceptor (Ru-A) to generate a [2 + 2] self-assembled metallocycle (TBNap-Ru-MC) in good yield. Both TBNap and TBNap-Ru-MC showed positive solvatochromism in different solvents with varying polarities. In addition, the binding propensity of cationic TBNap-Ru-MC toward the heparin polyanion was determined using fluorescence titration studies. The initial fluorescence emission of TBNap-Ru-MC was quenched upon the gradual addition of the heparin polyanion, and the Stern-Volmer quenching constant (K_SV) was calculated to be 3.97 × 10⁵ M^-1.

Luminescence, CPL and magnetic properties of 1D enantiopure Ln3+ complexes with (S-) and (R-) α-methoxyphenylacetate ligand

The reaction of Ln(NO₃)₂·6H₂O (Ln = Eu, Tb, Dy and Sm) with (R)-(-)-α-methoxyphenylacetic acid (R-HMPA) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) in EtOH/H₂O allows the isolation of 1D chiral compounds of formula [Ln(μ-R-MPA)(R-MPA)₂(phen)]_n in which Ln = Eu (R-Eu), Tb (R-Tb), Dy (R-Dy) and Sm (R-Sm). The same synthesis by using (S)-(+)-α-methoxyphenylacetic acid (S-HMPA) instead of (R)-(-)-α-methoxyphenylacetic acid allows the isolation of the enantiomeric compounds with formula [Ln(μ-S-MPA)(S-MPA)₂(phen)]_n where Ln = Eu (S-Eu), Tb (S-Tb), Dy (S-Dy) and Sm (S-Sm). Single crystal X-Ray diffraction measurements were performed for compounds R/S-Eu, R/S-Tb, S-Dy and S-Sm. The luminescence and the circular dichroism measured in the solid state are reported. All compounds show sensitized luminescence, notably the Eu³⁺ and Tb³⁺ ones, whose emission color can be perceived by the naked eye. For the Eu³⁺ and Tb³⁺ derivatives the quantum yield and the circular polarized luminescence have been measured. For the magnetic allowed transition ⁵D₀ → ⁷F₁ of the Eu³⁺ compound, the anisotropy factor g_lum is ±0.013 (+for S-Eu). Also, magnetic properties of all compounds were studied with the Dy³⁺ analogue showing slow relaxation of the magnetization under a direct current magnetic field of 1000 Oe.

Knotting matters: orderly molecular entanglements

Entangling strands in a well-ordered manner can produce useful effects, from shoelaces and fishing nets to brown paper packages tied up with strings. At the nanoscale, non-crystalline polymer chains of sufficient length and flexibility randomly form tangled mixtures containing open knots of different sizes, shapes and complexity. However, discrete molecular knots of precise topology can also be obtained by controlling the number, sequence and stereochemistry of strand crossings: orderly molecular entanglements. During the last decade, substantial progress in the nascent field of molecular nanotopology has been made, with general synthetic strategies and new knotting motifs introduced, along with insights into the properties and functions of ordered tangle sequences. Conformational restrictions imparted by knotting can induce allostery, strong and selective anion binding, catalytic activity, lead to effective chiral expression across length scales, binding modes in conformations efficacious for drug delivery, and facilitate mechanical function at the molecular level. As complex molecular topologies become increasingly synthetically accessible they have the potential to play a significant role in molecular and materials design strategies. We highlight particular examples of molecular knots to illustrate why these are a few of our favourite things.

Coordination-Directed Self-Assembly of Functional Polynuclear Lanthanide Supramolecular Architectures

Lanthanide supramolecular chemistry is a fast growing and intriguing research field due to the unique photophysical, magnetic, and coordination properties of lanthanide ions (Ln^III). Compared with the intensively investigated mononuclear Ln-complexes, polymetallic lanthanide supramolecular assemblies offer more structural superiority and functional advantages. In recent decades, significant progress has been made in polynuclear lanthanide supramolecules, varying from structural evolution to luminescent and magnetic functional materials. This review summarizes the design principles in ligand-induced coordination-driven self-assembly of polynuclear Ln-structures and intends to offer guidance for the construction of more elegant Ln-based architectures and optimization of their functional performances. Design principles concerning the water solubility and chirality of the lanthanide-organic assemblies that are vital in extending their applications are emphasized. The strategies for improving the luminescent properties and the applications in up-conversion, host-guest chemistry, luminescent sensing, and catalysis have been summarized. Magnetic materials based on supramolecular assembled lanthanide architectures are given in an individual section and are classified based on their structural features. Challenges remaining and perspective directions in this field are also briefly discussed.

Assembly of pinwheel/twist-shaped chiral lanthanide clusters with rotor structures by an annular/linear growth mechanism and their magnetic properties

This is the first time that an annular/linear growth mechanism has been proposed for the directional construction of lanthanide clusters with specific shapes.

Helicate-to-tetrahedron transformation of chiral lanthanide supramolecular complexes induced by ionic radii effect and linker length

Controlled formation of desired lanthanide supramolecular complexes is challenging because of the difficulties in predicting coordination geometry, as well as a labile coordination number. Herein, we explore the effect of ionic radii and linker length on supramolecular species formation. A helicate-to-tetrahedron transformation occurred between [Ln₂L1₃] and [Ln₄L1₆] (Ln = La, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb and Lu). For six lanthanide ions, the unfavored tetrahedron [La₄L1₆] can only be observed in a concentrated mixture with the helicate [La₂L1₃] where no pure [La₄L1₆] species was isolated via crystallization. For Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, the [Ln₄L1₆] supramolecular tetrahedron can be isolated via crystallization from diisopropyl ether. A similar result was also observed for Lu, but the tetrahedral structure was found to be relatively stable and transformed back to [Lu₂L1₃] much slower upon dissolution.  No tetrahedron formation was observed with L3 giving rise to only [Ln₂L3₃] species, in which L3 contains a longer and more flexible linker compared with that of L1. Results show that the supramolecular transformation in these systems is governed by both the ionic radii as well as the ligand design. Special focus is on both [Eu₂L1₃] and [Eu₄L1₆] which form chiral entities and exhibit interesting circular polarized luminescence.

Layered Perovskite Doping with Eu3+ and β-diketonate Eu3+ Complex

Metal halide perovskites are attracting great interest for the fabrication of light-emitting devices encompassing light-emitting diodes, lasers, and scintillators. As the field develops, perovskite doping emerges as a promising way to enrich the material functionalities and enhance the luminescence yield and tunability. While Mn⁺² addition has been well explored, doping with lanthanides has received less attention, even though their intense and line-like luminescence is interesting for a wide range of applications. In this work, we study the doping of NMA₂PbBr₄ layered perovskites with Eu³⁺ and Eu³⁺ tetrakis β-diketonate complex. By exploiting the antenna effect of the naphthalene-based functional cation (NMA = 1-naphtylmethylammonium), direct sensitization of Eu³⁺ is obtained; nevertheless, it is not very efficient due to the non-optimal energy level alignment with the resonance acceptor level of the lanthanide. Protection of Eu³⁺ in the form of tetrakis β-diketonate complex grants a more ideal coordination geometry and energetic landscape for the energy transfer to europium in the perovskite matrix, allowing for a nearly 30-fold improvement in luminescence yield. This work sets the basis for new synthetic strategies for the design of functional perovskite/lanthanide host-guest systems with improved luminescence properties.

Dynamic Stereoselection of Peptide Helicates and Their Selective Labeling of DNA Replication Foci in Cells*

Although largely overlooked in peptide engineering, coordination chemistry offers a new set of interactions that opens unexplored design opportunities for developing complex molecular structures. In this context, we report new artificial peptide ligands that fold into chiral helicates in the presence of labile metal ions such as Fe^II and Co^II . Heterochiral β-turn-promoting sequences encode the stereoselective folding of the peptide ligands and define the physicochemical properties of their corresponding metal complexes. Circular dichroism and NMR spectroscopy in combination with computational methods allowed us to identify and determine the structure of two isochiral ΛΛ-helicates, folded as topological isomers. Finally, in addition to the in-vitro characterization of their selective binding to DNA three-way junctions, cell-microscopy experiments demonstrated that a rhodamine-labeled Fe^II helicate was internalized and selectively stains DNA replication factories in functional cells.

Two homochiral EuIII and SmIII enantiomeric pairs showing circularly polarized luminescence, photoluminescence and triboluminescence

Two homochiral EuIII and SmIII tris(β-diketonate) enantiomeric pairs, based on fluorinated β-diketone (Hbtfa) and enantiopure asymmetric N,N'-donor ligands (LR and LS), Λ-Eu(btfa)3LR (R-1-Eu)/Δ-Eu(btfa)3LS (S-1-Eu) and Λ-Sm(btfa)3LR (R-2-Sm)/Δ-Sm(btfa)3LS (S-2-Sm) (btfa- = 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenyl-1,3-butanedionate and LR/LS = (-)/(+)-4,5-pineno-2,2'-bipyridine) were synthesized. The electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra confirmed their enantiomeric nature. R-1-Eu/S-1-Eu and R-2-Sm/S-2-Sm exhibit intense characteristic emissions of EuIII (red) and SmIII (orange-red) ions both in the solid state and in DCM with long lifetimes and high luminescence quantum yields. For example, the overall quantum yields reach up to 61% and 53% along with very high sensitization efficiency values of 82 and 79 for R-1-Eu in the solid state and in DCM, respectively. Notably, the corresponding values are determined to be 6.5% (solid state) and 3.1% (DCM) for R-2-Sm, which are among the highest quantum yields for rare SmIII tris(β-diketonate) luminescent complexes reported to date. Furthermore, R-1-Eu and R-2-Sm show a strong triboluminescence (TL) phenomenon visible with the naked eye in daylight. Moreover, R-1-Eu/S-1-Eu and R-2-Sm/S-2-Sm show circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties. Particularly, the luminescence dissymmetry factors (glum) for R-2-Sm/S-2-Sm are larger than those for R-1-Eu/S-1-Eu despite the fact that SmIII complexes usually show poorer emission than EuIII homologues, which is very rare in the reported EuIII and SmIII CPL-active complexes.

Luminescence, chiroptical, magnetic and ab initio crystal-field characterizations of an enantiopure helicoidal Yb(iii) complex

The electronic structure of a chiral Yb(iii)-based complex is fully determined by taking advantage of experimental magnetic, luminescence, and chiroptical (NIR-ECD and CPL) characterizations in combination with ab initio wavefunction calculations.

Dinuclear helicate or mononuclear pincer lanthanide complexes from one ligand: stereo-controlled assembly and catalysis

By varying the metal/ligand ratio, either dinuclear triple helicate or mononuclear pincer can be stereo-selectively obtained from the same chiral ligand. Their catalytic properties have been demonstrated with the asymmetric FC alkylation reactions.

Circularly polarized lanthanide luminescence for advanced security inks

Authenticating products and documents with security inks is vital to global commerce, security and health. Lanthanide complexes are widely used in luminescent security inks owing to their unique and robust photophysical properties. Lanthanide complexes can also be engineered to undergo circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), which encodes chiral molecular fingerprints in luminescence spectra that cannot be decoded by conventional optical measurements. However, chiral CPL signals have not yet been exploited as an extra security layer in advanced security inks. This Review introduces CPL and related concepts that are necessary to appreciate the challenges and potential of lanthanide-based, CPL-active security inks. We describe recent advances in CPL analysis and read-out technologies that have expedited CPL-active security ink applications. Further, we provide a systematic meta-analysis of strongly CPL-active Euⁱⁱⁱ, Tbⁱⁱⁱ, Smⁱⁱⁱ, Ybⁱⁱⁱ, Cmⁱⁱⁱ, Dyⁱⁱⁱ and Crⁱⁱⁱ complexes, discussing the suitability of their photophysical properties and highlighting promising candidates. We conclude by providing key recommendations for the development and advancement of the field.

Photophysical and Chiroptical Properties of the Enantiomers of N,N'-Bis(1-phenylpropyl)-2,6-pyridinecarboxamide and their Chiral 9-Coordinate Ln3+ Complexes

The R,R and S,S enantiomers of N,N'-bis(1-phenylpropyl)-2,6-pyridinedicarboxamide, L(Et), react with Ln3+ ions (Ln = La, Eu, Gd, and Tb) to give stable [Ln((R,R)- and (S,S)-L(Et))3]3+ in anhydrous acetonitrile solution, as evidenced by various spectroscopic measurements, including NMR and luminescence titrations. In addition to the characteristic Eu3+ and Tb3+ luminescence bands, the steady-state and time-resolved luminescence spectra of the aforementioned complexes show the residual ligand-centered emission of the 1ππ* to 3ππ* states, indicating an incomplete intersystem crossing (ISC) transfer from the 1ππ* to 3ππ* and ligand-to-Ln3+ energy transfer, respectively. The high circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) activity of [Eu(L(Et))3]3+ confirms that using a single enantiomer of L(Et) induces the preferential formation of one chiral [Eu(L(Et))3]3+ complex, consistent with the [EuL 3]3+ complexes formed with other ligands derived from a 2,6-pyridine dicarboxamide moiety. Furthermore, the CPL sign patterns of complexes with (R,R) or (S,S) enantiomer of L(Et) are consistent with the CPL sign pattern of related [LnL 3]3+ complexes with the (R,R) or (S,S) enantiomer of the respective ligands in this family.

Beyond Chiral Organic (p-Block) Chromophores for Circularly Polarized Luminescence: The Success of d-Block and f-Block Chiral Complexes

Chiral molecules are essential for the development of advanced technological applications in spintronic and photonic. The best systems should produce large circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) as estimated by their dissymmetry factor (g _lum), which can reach the maximum values of -2 ≤ g _lum ≤ 2 when either pure right- or left-handed polarized light is emitted after standard excitation. For matching this requirement, theoretical considerations indicate that optical transitions with large magnetic and weak electric transition dipole moments represent the holy grail of CPL. Because of their detrimental strong and allowed electric dipole transitions, popular chiral emissive organic molecules display generally moderate dissymmetry factors (10^-5 ≤ g _lum ≤ 10^-3). However, recent efforts in this field show that g _lum can be significantly enhanced when the chiral organic activators are part of chiral supramolecular assemblies or of liquid crystalline materials. At the other extreme, chiral Eu^III- and Sm^III-based complexes, which possess intra-shell parity-forbidden electric but allowed magnetic dipole transitions, have yielded the largest dissymmetry factor reported so far with g _lum ~ 1.38. Consequently, 4f-based metal complexes with strong CPL are currently the best candidates for potential technological applications. They however suffer from the need for highly pure samples and from considerable production costs. In this context, chiral earth-abundant and cheap d-block metal complexes benefit from a renewed interest according that their CPL signal can be optimized despite the larger covalency displayed by d-block cations compared with 4f-block analogs. This essay thus aims at providing a minimum overview of the theoretical aspects rationalizing circularly polarized luminescence and their exploitation for the design of chiral emissive metal complexes with strong CPL. Beyond the corroboration that f-f transitions are ideal candidates for generating large dissymmetry factors, a special attention is focused on the recent attempts to use chiral Cr^III-based complexes that reach values of g _lum up to 0.2. This could pave the way for replacing high-cost rare earths with cheap transition metals for CPL applications.

Effect of the Counterion on Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Europium(III) and Samarium(III) Complexes

Each enantiopure europium(III) and samarium(III) nitrate and triflate complex of the ligand L, with L = N,N′-bis(2-pyridylmethylidene)-1,2-(R,R + S,S)-cyclohexanediamine ([LnL(tta)₂]·NO₃ and [LnL(tta)₂(H₂O)]·CF₃SO₃, where tta = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetylacetonate) has been synthesized and characterized from a spectroscopic point of view, using a chiroptical technique such as electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). In all cases, both ligands are capable of sensitizing the luminescence of both metal ions upon absorption of light around 280 and 350 nm. Despite small differences in the total luminescence (TL) and ECD spectra, the CPL activity of the complexes is strongly influenced by a concurrent effect of the solvent and counterion. This particularly applies to europium(III) complexes where the CPL spectra in acetonitrile can be described as a weighed linear combination of the CPL spectra in dichloromethane and methanol, which show nearly opposite signatures when their ligand stereochemistries are the same. This phenomenon could be related to the presence of equilibria interconverting solvated, anion-coordinated complexes and isomers differing by the relative orientation of the tta ligands. The difference between some bond lengths (M–N bonds, in particular) in the different species could be at the basis of such an unusual CPL activity.

Triflate ([EuL(tta)₂(H₂O)]·CF₃SO₃) and nitrate ([EuL(tta)₂]·NO₃) complexes, with L = N,N′-bis(2-pyridylmethylidene)-1,2-(R,R or S,S)-cyclohexanediamine, where tta = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetylacetonate, show nearly opposite circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signatures when dissolved in dichloromethane (DCM) or methanol (MeOH), even though their ligand stereochemistries remain unchanged. The presence (in DCM) and absence (in MeOH) of the counterion in the inner coordination sphere determine a strong change of the CPL activity of the relative europium(III) complex.

Chiral luminescent lanthanide complexes possessing strong (samarium, SmIII) circularly polarised luminescence (CPL), and their self-assembly into Langmuir-Blodgett films

The lanthanide directed self-assembly of chiral amphiphilic 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid based ligands 1 and 2 with various Ln(CF₃SO₃)₃ (Ln = Tb^III, Sm^III, Lu^III, Dy^III) salts was studied in CH₃CN and evaluated with the expected 1 : 3 and 1 : 1 Ln : Ligand species forming in solution. Ligand chirality was retained and transferred, as depicted by circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) measurements (for Tb^III and Sm^III), to the lanthanide centre upon complexation with high dissymmetry factor values for the Sm^III complexes obtained (g_lum = -0.44 and 0.29 and 0.45 and -0.23 for the ⁴G_5/2→⁶H_5/2 and the ⁴G_5/2→⁶H_7/2 transitions of Sm·1₃ and Sm·2₃, respectively). The ability of the complexes to form stable Langmuir monolayers at the air-water interface was also established while Langmuir-Blodgett films of Tb·L₃ and Sm·L₃ exhibited lanthanide luminescent emission.

Chiral dinuclear Ln(iii) complexes derived from S- and R-2-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)propionate. Optical and magnetic properties

Eight dinuclear chiral compounds of the formula [Ln₂(S-L)₆(phen)₂]·3DMF·H₂O or [Ln₂(R-L)₆(phen)₂]·3DMF·H₂O [Ln = Eu, Gd, Tb and Dy], (S)-(+)- or (R)-(−)-2-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)propionic acid, S-HL or R-HL, are reported. Luminescence and magnetic studies are also reported.

Stereocontrolled self-assembly and photochromic transformation of lanthanide supramolecular helicates

Stereocontrolled self-assembly of a dinuclear triple-stranded europium helicate (Eu2L3) based on DTE-functionalized ligands has been achieved via the chiral-induction strategy. The point-chirality of the ligands is transferred to give either Δ or Λ metal-centers and hence leads to the overall P or M helical senses. CD spectroscopy and NMR enantiomeric differentiation experiments have confirmed the formation of enantiomers. Moreover, the helicates in solution feature reversible photocyclization and cycloreversion, offering an opportunity to develop as chiroptical switches.

The effect of the linker size in C2-symmetrical chiral ligands on the self-assembly formation of luminescent triple-stranded di-metallic Eu(iii) helicates in solution

Chiral lanthanide-based supramolecular structures have gained significant importance in view of their application in imaging, sensing and other functional purposes. We have designed chiral C2-symmetrical ligands (L) based on the use of two 2,6-pyridine-dicarboxylic-amide moieties (pda), that differ from one another by the nature of the diamine spacer groups (from 1,3-phenylenedimethanamine (1(S,S), 2(R,R)) and benzene-1,3-diamine (3(S,S), 4(R,R)) to much bulkier 4,4'-(cyclohexane-1,1-diyl)bis(2,6-dimethylaniline) (5(S,S), 6(R,R))) between these two pda units. The self-assembly between L and Eu(iii) ions were investigated in CH3CN solution at low concentration whereby the changes in the absorbance, fluorescence and Eu(iii)-centred emission spectra allowed us to model the binding equilibria occurring in the solution to the presence of [Eu:L2], [Eu2:L2], [Eu2:L3] assemblies and reveal their high binding constant values. The self-assembly in solution were also studied at higher concentration by following the changes in the 1H NMR spectra of the ligands upon Eu(iii) addition, as well as by using MALDI-MS of the isolated solid state complexes. The chiroptical properties of the ligands were used in order to study the structural changes upon self-assembly between the ligands and Eu(iii) ions using circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) spectroscopies. The photophysical properties of [Eu2:L3] complexes were evaluated in solution and showed a decrease of luminescence quantum yield when going from the ligand with smaller (1(S,S)) to bulkier (5(S,S)) linker from ∼5.8% to ∼2.6%. While mass-spectrometry revealed the possible formation of trinucler assemblies such as [Eu3:L3] and [Eu3:L2].

Chiral BINAPO-Controlled Diastereoselective Self-Assembly and Circularly Polarized Luminescence in Triple-Stranded Europium(III) Podates

Chiral lanthanide helical architectures have received intense attentions in recent years because of their potential applications as chiral probes and sensors and as circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials. However, stereoselectivity control in the self-assembly of lanthanide helicate is challenging due to the poor stereochemical preference and variable coordination numbers of Ln(III) ions. Herein, we reported the employing chiral ancillary ligand R/S-BINAPO to induce achiral tripodal ligand to form a pair of homochiral lanthanide triple-helical podates [Eu(TTEA)((R/S)-BINAPO); R/S-1] {(R/S)-BINAPO = ( R/ S)-2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphoryl)-1,1'-binaphthyl; TTEA = tris[(4-(4,4,4-trifluoro-1,3-dioxobutyl)-benzamido)ethyl]amine}. X-ray crystallographic analysis for rac-1 reveals that the chirality of BINAPO is transferred during the self-assembly process to give either P or M helical architectures in podates. The ¹H and ³¹P NMR and circular dichroism measurements confirm the diastereopurity of the assemblies in solution. A detailed optical and chiroptical characterization reveals that the luminescent enantiopure podates not only exhibit intense CPL with | g_lum| values reaching 0.072 but also show high luminescence quantum yields of 32.8%. Our results provide a feasible strategy for designing homochiral helical lanthanide supramolecular architecture and synthesizing excellent CPL materials.

Ligand-to-Ligand Interactions That Direct Formation of D2-Symmetrical Alternating Circular Helicate

This work demonstrates that ligand-to-ligand interactions between achiral bis-β-diketonate (BTP) and chiral bis(4-phenyl-2-oxazolinyl)pyridine [( R)- or ( S)-Ph-Pybox] are successfully directed to the fabrication of a D₂-symmetrical alternating circular helicate with the general formula [( R)- or ( S)-Ph-Pybox]₄(Ln^III)₄(BTP)₆. The lanthanide(III) Ln^III assemblies (Ln^III₄- RRRR and Ln^III₄- SSSS) have a nanometer-size squarelike grid (interatomic distances > 10 Å). X-ray structure analysis revealed that the circular helicate contains two double helicate Ln^III₂L₂ units, where both show ( M)-helicity for Ln^III₄- RRRR and ( P)-helicity for Ln^III₄- SSSS, where π-π stacking interaction is present between the side arm of ( R)-Ph-Pybox (Ph₁) and the adjacent BTP ligand around the Eu^III metal center ( d_ππ = 3.636 Å: the diketonate plane···Ph₁ distance). The newly obtained circular lanthanide(III) helicate exists as single and homochiral diastereomers in solution (Ln^III₄- RRRR and Ln^III₄- SSSS), exhibiting circularly dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). Conversely, the circular helicate favors the heterochiral arrangement (i.e., Ln^III₄- RRRR/Ln^III₄- SSSS).

White-light emission from discrete heterometallic lanthanide-directed self-assembled complexes in solution

Herein, we have developed a white-light-emitting system based on the formation of discrete lanthanide-based self-assembled complexes using a newly-designed ligand. We demonstrate that fine tuning of the lanthanide ions molar ratio in the self-assemblies combined with the intrinsic blue fluorescence of the ligand allows for the successful emission of pure white light with CIE coordinates of (0.33, 0.34).

Circularly polarized luminescence on dinuclear Tb(iii) and Eu(iii) complexes with (S-) and (R-) 2-phenylpropionate

Four dinuclear chiral compounds [Ln₂(S/R-L)₆(phen)₂]₂·2.5·S/R-HL in which Ln = Tb,Eu and S/R-HL = (S)-(+)- or (R)-(−)-phenylpropionic acid are reported. Luminescence study, including CPL spectra, is also reported.
