Abstract
The successful isolation and characterization of a dioxirane species in 1988 opened up one of the most attractive methods for the efficient oxidation of simple and/or structurally complex molecules. Dioxirane today rank among the most powerful tools in organic chemistry, with numerous applications in commercially important processes. They were quickly recognized as efficient oxygen transfer agents, especially for epoxidations and for a wide range of O-insertion reactions into C-H bonds. Dioxirane possess catalytic activity and appear as highly (chemo-, regio-, and stereo-) selective oxidants, despite their reactivity under mild and strictly neutral conditions being controlled by a combination of steric and electronic factors. In this review, we discuss some of the most recent and significant developments in the selective homogeneous and heterogeneous oxyfunctionalization of non-activated C-H bonds in hydrocarbons of natural and non-natural targets by using isolated dioxirane or, more generally, by using the ketones (i.e., the dioxirane precursors) as organocatalysts.

Abstract
Low pressure plasma was used for preparing heterogeneous organocatalysts 2-(A)-(C) suitable for dioxirane-mediated epoxidations. Heterogenization was accomplished by adsorption of the methyl perfluoroheptyl ketone (2) on fluorinated supports (A)-(C) deriving from the treatment of commercial C₈-silica gel in low pressure plasma fed with fluorocarbons. Catalyst 2-(C) proved to be the most efficient one, promoting epoxidation of an array of alkenes, including unsaturated fatty esters like methyl oleate (10) and the triglyceride soybean oil (11), with the cheap potassium peroxymonosulfate KHSO₅ (caroate) as a green oxidant. Notably, the perfluorinated matrix gives rise to the activation of caroate, generating singlet oxygen. Materials were characterized by infrared Attenuated Total Reflectance spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS ) and Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM).

Abstract
Pericosine E (6), a metabolite of Periconia byssoides OUPS-N133 was originally isolated from the sea hare Aplysia kurodai, which exists as an enantiomeric mixture in nature. The enantiospecific syntheses of both enantiomers of Periconia byssoides OUPS-N133 has been achieved, along with six stereoisomers, using a common simple synthetic strategy. For these efficient syntheses, highly regio- and steroselective processes for the preparation of bromohydrin and anti-epoxide intermediates were applied. In order to access the unique O-linked carbadisaccharide structure, coupling of chlorohydrin as a donor and anti-epoxide as an acceptor was achieved using catalytic BF3·Et2O. Most of the synthesized compounds exhibited selectively significant inhibitory activity against α-glycosidase derived from yeast. The strongest analog showed almost 50 times the activity of the positive control, deoxynojirimycin.

Abstract
The first synthesis of (-)-pericosine E (6), a metabolite of the Periconia byssoides OUPS-N133 isolated originally from the sea hare Aplysia kurodai, has been achieved. Efficient and regioselective synthetic procedures for the synthesis of key intermediates, anti- and syn-epoxides 9 and 10, were developed using an anti-epoxidation of diene 12 with TFDO and a bromohydrination of 12 with NBS in CH(3)CN/H(2)O (2:3), respectively. In addition, comparison of the specific optical rotations between synthetic 6 and natural 6 elucidated that the naturally preferred enantiomer of pericosine E had the same absolute configuration as (-)-6 synthesized from chlorohydrin (-)-8 and anti-epoxide (+)-9.

Abstract
Dioxiranes are used as reagents in a myriad of synthetically useful oxidations performed in aqueous medium. To extend such an approach also to substrates that are highly hydrophobic, we propose here the use of microemulsions based on the surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium hydrogen sulphate (CTAHS) because of its high stability against peroxide species. In this paper, we examine the dioxirane (isolated or generated in situ) reactivity in different CTAHS microemulsions. Yield and selectivity of the oxidation of β-methylstyrene by dimethyldioxirane (DDO) generate "in situ" and of laurolactam by isolated methyl(trifluorometyl)dioxirane (TFDO) were studied. For each microemulsion, the aggregate size and the localization of the components were determined by a combination of NMR and light scattering techniques. The hydrodynamic radius of the micelles is close to the length of the surfactant and this suggests they are spherical in shape. When acetone (the precursor of DDO) is present in the formulation, it partitions itself between the aqueous bulk and the micellar palisade so that the dioxirane eventually formed is readily available to oxidize substrates secluded in the micelle. Apolar substrates, confined within the micelles, are protected from uncontrolled oxidations, leading to an astonishing high selectivity of oxidation of laurolactam to 12-nitro-lauric acid by TFDO. This opens the way to an easy procedure (performed in water under mild conditions) to synthetize ω-nitroacids.

Abstract
This work addresses a new approach developed in our laboratory, consisting in the application of isolated dimethyldioxirane (DDO, 1a) labelled with 18O for synthesis of epoxidized glyceryl linoleate (Gly-LLL, 2). We expect that this work could contribute in improving analytical methods for the determination of epoxidized soybean oil (ESBO) in complex food matrices by adopting an 18O-labelled-epoxidized triacylglycerol as an internal standard.

Abstract
A procedure is described for the preparation of A-homo-5-pregnenes via an acid catalyzed rearrangement of cyclopropylcarbinols assisted by microwave irradiation. 3alpha-Hydroxy and 4alpha-hydroxy-A-homo-5-pregnen-20-one, analogues of the neuroactive steroid allopregnanolone, were obtained by means of a regioselective epoxidation of a double bond in the expanded A-ring, using a fructose-derived chiral ketone as catalyst and oxone as oxidant. Although both these compounds were marginally active in inhibiting TBPS binding to GABA(A) receptors, 3beta-hydroxy-A-homo-5-pregnen-20-one was almost as active as allopregnanolone. Reduction of the double bond of the latter compound resulted in a ten fold loss of activity.

Abstract
A detailed theoretical study of dimethyldioxirane-mediated epoxidations with a variety of differently substituted alkenes 3-21 is presented. Transition structures and activation barriers were determined in the gas phase and in acetone as solvent with the B3LYP/6-311+G(d) level of theory. Substituent effects were elucidated by frontier orbital analyses of the reacting species as well as by natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis of the transition structures. Epoxidations with alkenes carrying electron-donating groups such as OMe or NHAc commonly tend to have low activation energies and early transitions states, whereas using alkenes with electron-withdrawing moieties such as CN, SO2Me, CO2Me, CF3, CHO, and Cl higher activation barriers and late transition states are observed. In all cases a net charge transfer (CT) from the alkene to the dioxirane was observed substantiating the electrophilic character of dimethyldioxirane.
