The progression of inorganic nanoparticles and natural products for inflammatory bowel disease

There is a growing body of evidence indicating a close association between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and disrupted intestinal homeostasis. Excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS), along with an increase in M1 proinflammatory macrophage infiltration during the activation of intestinal inflammation, plays a pivotal role in disrupting intestinal homeostasis in IBD. The overabundance of ROS/RNS can cause intestinal tissue damage and the disruption of crucial gut proteins, which ultimately compromises the integrity of the intestinal barrier. The proliferation of M1 macrophages contributes to an exaggerated immune response, further compromising the intestinal immune barrier. Currently, intestinal nanomaterials have gained widespread attention in the context of IBD due to their notable characteristics, including the ability to specifically target regions of interest, clear excess ROS/RNS, and mimic biological enzymes. In this review, we initially elucidated the gut microenvironment in IBD. Subsequently, we delineate therapeutic strategies involving two distinct types of nanomedicine, namely inorganic nanoparticles and natural product nanomaterials. Finally, we present a comprehensive overview of the promising prospects associated with the application of nanomedicine in future clinical settings for the treatment of IBD (graphic abstract). Different classes of nanomedicine are used to treat IBD. This review primarily elucidates the current etiology of inflammatory bowel disease and explores two prominent nanomaterial-based therapeutic approaches. First, it aims to eliminate excessive reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species. Second, they focus on modulating the polarization of inflammatory macrophages and reducing the proportion of pro-inflammatory macrophages. Additionally, this article delves into the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease using inorganic metal nanomaterials and natural product nanomaterials.

Cooperative Self-Assembly Driven by Multiple Noncovalent Interactions: Investigating Molecular Origin and Reassessing Characterization

Cooperative interactions play a pivotal role in programmable supramolecular assembly. Emerging from a complex interplay of multiple noncovalent interactions, achieving cooperativity has largely relied on empirical knowledge. Its development as a rational design tool in molecular self-assembly requires a detailed characterization of the underlying interactions, which has hitherto been a challenge for assemblies that lack long-range order. We employ extensive one- and two-dimensional magic-angle-spinning (MAS) solid-state NMR spectroscopy to elucidate key structure-directing interactions in cooperatively bound aggregates of a perylene bisimide (PBI) chromophore. Analysis of ¹H-¹³C cross-polarization heteronuclear correlation (CP-HETCOR) and ¹H-¹H double-quantum single-quantum (DQ-SQ) correlation spectra allow the identification of through-space ¹H···¹³C and ¹H···¹H proximities in the assembled state and reveals the nature of molecular organization in the solid aggregates. Emergence of cooperativity from the synergistic interaction between a stronger π-stacking and a weaker interstack hydrogen-bonding is elucidated. Finally, using a combination of optical absorption, circular dichroism, and high-resolution MAS NMR spectroscopy based titration experiments, we investigate the anomalous solvent-induced disassembly of aggregates. Our results highlight the disparity between two well-established approaches of characterizing cooperativity, using thermal and good solvent-induced disassembly. The anomaly is explained by elucidating the difference between two disassembly pathways.

A "Rigid-Flexible" Approach for Processable Perylene Diimide-Based Polymers: Influence of the Specific Architecture on the Morphological, Dielectric, Optical, and Electronic Properties

Conjugation-break flexible spacers in-between π-conjugated segments were utilized herein toward processable perylene diimide (PDI)-based polymers. Aromatic-aliphatic PDI-based polymers were developed via the two-phase polyetherification of a phenol-difunctional PDI monomer and aliphatic dibromides. These polyethers showed excellent solubility and film-forming ability and deep lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) levels (-4.0 to -3.85 eV), indicating the preservation of good electron-accepting character or characteristics, despite the non-conjugated segments. Their thermodynamic properties, local dynamics, and ionic conductivity demonstrate the suppression of PDI's inherent tendency for aggregation and crystallization, suggesting PDI-polyethers as versatile candidates for organic electronic applications. Their dynamics investigation using dielectric spectroscopy revealed weak dipole moments arising from the distortion of the planar perylene cores. Blends of the PDI-polyethers (as electron acceptors) with P3HT (as a potential electron donor component) showed UV-vis absorbances from 350 to 650 nm and a tendency of the PDI-polyethers to intertwine with rr-P3HT and restrain its high crystallization tendency.

Two-Dimensional Hydrogen-Bonded Nanoarchitecture Composed of Rectangular 3,4,9,10-Perylenetetracarboxylic Diimide and Boomerang-Shaped Molecules Resulting from the Dissociation of 1,3,5-Tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene

The self-assembly of 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic diimide (PTCDI) with the star-shaped 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene (TAPB) on Au(111) is investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy. PTCDI forms a compact canted arrangement on the gold surface. When TAPB is sublimated at a high temperature, the molecule dissociates into a 4-aminophenyl group and a boomerang-shaped compound. The boomerang molecule self-assembles with PTCDI to create a two-dimensional (2D) nanoarchitecture stabilized by N-H···O-C hydrogen bonds between the dissociated TAPB and PTCDI. The molecular ratio of this multicomponent structure is 1:1.

Afterglow Effects as a Tool to Screen Emissive Nongeminate Charge Recombination Processes in Organic Photovoltaic Composites

Disentangling temporally overlapping charge carrier recombination events in organic bulk heterojunctions by optical spectroscopy is challenging. Here, a new methodology for employing delayed luminescence spectroscopy is presented. The proposed method is capable of distinguishing between recombination of spatially separated charge carriers and trap-assisted charge recombination simply by monitoring the delayed luminescence (afterglow) of bulk heterojunctions with a quasi time-integrated detection scheme. Applied on the model composite of the donor poly(6,12-dihydro-6,6,12,12-tetraoctyl-indeno[1,2-b]fluorene-alt-benzothiadiazole) (PIF8BT) polymer and the acceptor ethyl-propyl perylene diimide (PDI) derivative, that is, PIF8BT:PDI, the luminescence of charge-transfer (CT) states created by nongeminate charge recombination on the ns to μs timescale is observed. Fluence-dependent, quasi time-integrated detection of the CT luminescence monitors exclusively emissive charge recombination events, while rejecting the contribution of other early-time emissive processes. Trap-assisted and bimolecular charge recombination channels are identified based on their distinct dependence on fluence. The importance of the two recombination channels is correlated with the layer's order and electrical properties of the corresponding devices. Four different microstructures of the PIF8BT:PDI composite obtained by thermal annealing are investigated. Thermal annealing of PIF8BT:PDI shrinks the PDI domains in parallel with the growth of the PIF8BT domains in the blend. Common to all states studied, the delayed CT luminescence signal is dominated by trap-assisted recombination. Yet, the minor fraction of fully separated charge recombination in the overall CT emission increases as the difference in the size of the donor and acceptor domains in the PIF8BT:PDI blend becomes larger. Electric field-induced quenching measurements on complete PIF8BT:PDI devices confirm quantitatively the dominance of emissive trap-limited charge recombination and demonstrates that only 40% of the PIF8BT/PDI CT luminescence comes from the recombination of fully-separated charges, taking place within 200 ns after photoexcitation. The method is applicable to other nonfullerene acceptor blends beyond the system discussed here, if their CT state luminescence can be monitored.

Monolayer Phases of a Dipolar Perylene Derivative on Au(111) and Surface Potential Build-Up in Multilayers

9-(Bis-p-tert-octylphenyl)-amino-perylene-3,4-dicarboxy anhydride (BOPA-PDCA) is a strongly dipolar molecule representing a group of asymmetrically substituted perylenes that are employed in dye-sensitized solar cells and hold great promise for discotic liquid crystal applications. Thin BOPA-PDCA films with orientated dipole moments can potentially be used to tune the energy-level alignment in electronic devices and store information. To help assessing these prospects, we here elucidate the molecular self-assembly and electronic structure of BOPA-PCDA employing room temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy in combination with ultraviolet and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. BOPA-PCDA monolayers on Au(111) exclusively form in-plane antiferroelectric phases. The molecular arrangements, the increase of the average number of molecules per unit cell via ripening, and the rearrangement upon manipulation with the STM tip indicate an influence of the dipole moment on the molecular assembly and the rearrangement. A slightly preferred out-of-plane orientation of the molecules in the multilayer induces a surface potential of 1.2 eV. This resembles the giant surface potential effect that was reported for vacuum-deposited tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum and deemed applicable for data storage. Notably, the surface potential in the case of BOPA-PDCA can in part be reversibly removed by visible light irradiation.

Charge versus Energy Transfer Effects in High-Performance Perylene Diimide Photovoltaic Blend Films

Perylene diimide (PDI)-based organic photovoltaic devices can potentially deliver high power conversion efficiency values provided the photon energy absorbed is utilized efficiently in charge transfer (CT) reactions instead of being consumed in nonradiative energy transfer (ET) steps. Hitherto, it remains unclear whether ET or CT primarily drives the photoluminescence (PL) quenching of the PDI excimer state in PDI-based blend films. Here, we affirm the key role of the thermally assisted PDI excimer diffusion and subsequent CT reaction in the process of PDI excimer PL deactivation. For our study we perform PL quenching experiments in the model PDI-based composite made of poly[4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b;4,5-b']dithiophene-2,6-diyl-alt-(4-(2-ethylhexanoyl)-thieno[3,4-b]thiophene)-2-6-diyl] (PBDTTT-CT) polymeric donor mixed with the N,N'-bis(1-ethylpropyl)-perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic diimide (PDI) acceptor. Despite the strong spectral overlap between the PDI excimer PL emission and UV-vis absorption of PBDTTT-CT, two main observations indicate that no significant ET component operates in the overall PL quenching: the PL intensity of the PDI excimer (i) increases with decreasing temperature and (ii) remains unaffected even in the presence of 10 wt % content of the PBDTTT-CT quencher. Temperature-dependent wide-angle X-ray scattering experiments further indicate that nonradiative resonance ET is highly improbable due to the large size of PDI domains. The dominance of the CT over the ET process is verified by the high performance of devices with an optimum composition of 30:70 PBDTTT-CT:PDI. By adding 0.4 vol % of 1,8-diiodooctane we verify the plasticization of the polymer side chains that balances the charge transport properties of the PBDTTT-CT:PDI composite and results in additional improvement in the device efficiency. The temperature-dependent spectral width of the PDI excimer PL band suggests the presence of energetic disorder in the PDI excimer excited state manifold.

Elucidating the impact of molecular packing and device architecture on the performance of nanostructured perylene diimide solar cells

The performance of organic photovoltaic devices (OPV) with nanostructured polymer:perylene diimide (PDI) photoactive layers approaches the levels of the corresponding polymer:fullerene systems. Nevertheless, a coherent understanding of the difficulty for PDI-based OPV devices to deliver high power conversion efficiencies remains elusive. Here we perform a comparative study of a set of four different polymer:PDI OPV model systems. The different device performances observed are attributed to differences in the nanostructural motif of these composites, as determined by wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) measurements. Long-range structural order in the PDI domain dictates (i) the stabilization energy and (ii) the concentration of the PDI excimers in the composites. The quenching of the PDI excimer photoluminescence (PL) is found to be insensitive to the former, but it depends on the latter. High PL quenching occurs for the low concentration of PDI excimers that are formed in PDI columns with a length comparable to the PDI excimer diffusion length. The stabilization of the PDI excimer state increases as the long-range order in the PDI domains improves. The structural order of the PDI domains primarily affects charge transport. Electron mobility reduces as the size of the PDI domain increases, suggesting that well-ordered PDI domains suffer from poor electronic connectivity. WAXS further reveals the presence of additional intermolecular PDI interactions, other than the direct face-to-face intermolecular coupling, that introduce a substantial energetic disorder in the polymer:PDI composites. Conventional device architectures with hole-collecting ITO/PEDOT:PSS bottom electrodes are compared with inverted device architectures bearing bottom electron-collecting electrodes of ITO/ZnO. Self-assembling hydrogel scaffolds for photocatalytic hydrogen production

Integration into a soft material of all the molecular components necessary to generate storable fuels is an interesting target in supramolecular chemistry. The concept is inspired by the internal structure of photosynthetic organelles, such as plant chloroplasts, which colocalize molecules involved in light absorption, charge transport and catalysis to create chemical bonds using light energy. We report here on the light-driven production of hydrogen inside a hydrogel scaffold built by the supramolecular self-assembly of a perylene monoimide amphiphile. The charged ribbons formed can electrostatically attract a nickel-based catalyst, and electrolyte screening promotes gelation. We found the emergent phenomenon that screening by the catalyst or the electrolytes led to two-dimensional crystallization of the chromophore assemblies and enhanced the electronic coupling among the molecules. Photocatalytic production of hydrogen is observed in the three-dimensional environment of the hydrogel scaffold and the material is easily placed on surfaces or in the pores of solid supports.

Graphene nanoribbon blends with P3HT for organic electronics

In organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) the electrical characteristics of polymeric semiconducting materials suffer from the presence of structural/morphological defects and grain boundaries as well as amorphous domains within the film, hindering an efficient transport of charges. To improve the percolation of charges we blend a regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) with newly designed N = 18 armchair graphene nanoribbons (GNRs). The latter, prepared by a bottom-up solution synthesis, are expected to form solid aggregates which cannot be easily interfaced with metallic electrodes, limiting charge injection at metal-semiconductor interfaces, and are characterized by a finite size, thus by grain boundaries, which negatively affect the charge transport within the film. Both P3HT and GNRs are soluble/dispersible in organic solvents, enabling the use of a single step co-deposition process. The resulting OFETs show a three-fold increase in the charge carrier mobilities in blend films, when compared to pure P3HT devices. This behavior can be ascribed to GNRs, and aggregates thereof, facilitating the transport of the charges within the conduction channel by connecting the domains of the semiconductor film. The electronic characteristics of the devices such as the Ion/Ioff ratio are not affected by the addition of GNRs at different loads. Studies of the electrical characteristics under illumination for potential use of our blend films as organic phototransistors (OPTs) reveal a tunable photoresponse. Therefore, our strategy offers a new method towards the enhancement of the performance of OFETs, and holds potential for technological applications in (opto)electronics.

Effect of local and global structural order on the performance of perylene diimide excimeric solar cells

Herein, we present a detailed study of the structure-function relationship in the organic photovoltaic (OPV) blend film composed of N,N'-bis(1-ethylpropyl)-perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic diimide (EP-PDI) and the low energy gap copolymer of poly[4,8-bis-substituted-benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene-2,6-diyl-alt-4-substituted-thieno[3,4-b]thiophene-2,6-diyl] (PBDTTT-E-O). The hierarchical organization in the photoactive layers and in extruded fibers of PBDTTT-E-O:EP-PDI was studied by fluorescence optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). WAXS revealed a nanophase-separated structure where PBDTTT-E-O domains of 4.3 nm in size coexist with EP-PDI domains of 20 nm size. Thermal annealing results in an increase of the PBDTTT-E-O domains, but it does not affect the size of the EP-PDI domains. Only the length of the EP-PDI columns in each domain is increased by thermal treatment. The photophysical characterization of the PBDTTT-E-O:EP-PDI layers and the electrical characterization of the corresponding OPV and unipolar carrier devices were performed. The quenching of the EP-PDI excimer luminescence is correlated with the photocurrent generation efficiency of the OPV devices. At high annealing temperatures the EP-PDI columnar length becomes larger than the previously reported diffusion length of the PDI excimer, and fewer excimers dissociate at the EP-PDI/polymer interfaces, leading to reduced photocurrent generation. The charge transport properties of the PBDTTT-E-O:EP-PDI blend film were studied as a function of the active layer microstructure that was tuned by thermal treatment. Thermal processing increases electron mobility, but the poor connectivity of the EP-PDI domains keeps hole mobility six times higher. In respect to the as-spun OPV device, a 3-fold increase is found in the power conversion efficiency of the device annealed at 100 °C. The high surface roughness of the PBDTTT-E-O:EP-PDI photoactive layer impedes the efficient extraction of charges, and a thin and smooth perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic bisbenzimidazole overlayer is required for increasing the device performance to a power conversion efficiency (PCE) ∼ 1.7%. The inversion in the polarity of the device contacts resulted in an inverted device with PCE ∼ 1.9%. We provide rational guidelines for the accurate tuning of the layer microstructure in PDI-based photoactive layers of efficient OPV devices. Local disorder in the EP-PDI aggregates is essential (i) for the optimum electron transport that is ensured by the efficient connectivity of the EP-PDI columns in adjacent EP-PDI domains and (ii) for preventing the stabilization of the neutral photoexcitations in the EP-PDI domains in the form of slowly diffusive excimers. The high photocurrent generation efficiency achieved suggests the EP-PDI excimers are formed faster than the activation of triplet states, and photocurrent losses are minimized.

Coexistence of helical morphologies in columnar stacks of star-shaped discotic hydrazones

Discotic hydrazone molecules are of particular interest as they form discotic phases where the discs are rigidified by intramolecular hydrogen bonds. Here, we investigate the thermotropic behavior and solid-state organizations of three discotic hydrazone derivatives with dendritic groups attached to their outer peripheries, containing six, eight, and ten carbons of linear alkoxy chains. On the basis of two-dimensional wide angle X-ray scattering (2DWAXS), the elevated temperature liquid crystalline (LC) phases were assigned to a hexagonal columnar (Colh) organization with nontilted hydrazone discs for all three compounds. With WAXS, advanced solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) techniques, and ab initio computations, the compounds with six and ten carbons of achiral alkoxy side chains were further subjected to studies at 25 °C, revealing complex crystalline phases with rigid columns and flexible side chains. This combined approach led to models of coexisting helical columnar stacking morphologies for both systems with two different tilt/pitch angles between successive hydrazone molecules. The differences in tilt/pitch angles between the two compounds illustrate that the columns with short alkoxy chains (six carbons) are more influenced by the presence of other stacks in their vicinity, while those with long side chains are less tilted due to a larger alkoxy (ten carbons) buffer zone. The formation of different packing morphologies in the crystalline phase of a columnar LC has rarely been reported so far, which suggests the possibility of complex stacking structures of similar organic LC systems, utilizing small molecules as potential materials for applications in organic electronics.

Self-assembling porphyrins and phthalocyanines for photoinduced charge separation and charge transport

Large π-conjugated compounds are promising building blocks for organic thin-film electronics such as organic light-emitting diodes, organic field-effect transistors, and organic photovoltaics. Utilization of porphyrins and phthalocyanines for this purpose is highly fascinating because of their excellent electric, photophysical, and electrochemical properties as well as intense self-assembling abilities arising from π-π stacking interactions. This paper focuses on fundamental aspects of self-assembled structures that have been obtained from porphyrin and phthalocyanine building blocks and more complex composites for photoinduced charge separation and charge transport toward the potential applications to organic thin-film electronics.

Perylene imides for organic photovoltaics: yesterday, today, and tomorrow

Perylene imides have been an object of research for 100 years and their derivatives are key n-type semiconductors in the field of organic electronics. While perylene diimides have been applied in many electronic and photonic devices, their use can be traced back to the first efficient organic solar cell. By functionalizing different positions of the in total 12 positions (four peri, four bay, and four ortho-positions) on the perylene core, perylene imides with significantly different optical, electronic and morphological properties may be prepared. Perylene imides and their derivatives have been used in several types of organic photovoltaics, including flat-, and bulk-heterojunction devices as well as dye-sensitized solar cells. Additionally perylene imides-based copolymers or oligomers play an important role in single junction devices. In this review, the relationship between the photovoltaic performance and the structure of perylene imides is discussed.

Applications of high-resolution 1H solid-state NMR

This article reviews the large increase in applications of high-resolution (1)H magic-angle spinning (MAS) solid-state NMR, in particular two-dimensional heteronuclear and homonuclear (double-quantum and spin-diffusion NOESY-like exchange) experiments, in the last five years. These applications benefit from faster MAS frequencies (up to 80 kHz), higher magnetic fields (up to 1 GHz) and pulse sequence developments (e.g., homonuclear decoupling sequences applicable under moderate and fast MAS). (1)H solid-state NMR techniques are shown to provide unique structural insight for a diverse range of systems including pharmaceuticals, self-assembled supramolecular structures and silica-based inorganic-organic materials, such as microporous and mesoporous materials and heterogeneous organometallic catalysts, for which single-crystal diffraction structures cannot be obtained. The power of NMR crystallography approaches that combine experiment with first-principles calculations of NMR parameters (notably using the GIPAW approach) are demonstrated, e.g., to yield quantitative insight into hydrogen-bonding and aromatic CH-π interactions, as well as to generate trial three-dimensional packing arrangements. It is shown how temperature-dependent changes in the (1)H chemical shift, linewidth and DQ-filtered signal intensity can be analysed to determine the thermodynamics and kinetics of molecular level processes, such as the making and breaking of hydrogen bonds, with particular application to proton-conducting materials. Other applications to polymers and biopolymers, inorganic compounds and bioinorganic systems, paramagnetic compounds and proteins are presented. The potential of new technological advances such as DNP methods and new microcoil designs is described.

Segregated donor-acceptor columns in liquid crystals that exhibit highly efficient ambipolar charge transport

Liquid crystalline donor (i.e., phthalocyanine) was covalently linked to acceptor (i.e, fullerene) to achieve efficient charge-transport properties in a liquid crystalline phase. The columnar structure exhibited highly efficient ambipolar charge-transport character, demonstrating the potential utility of the strategy in organic electronics.
