[MnIII4LnIII4] Calix[4]arene Clusters as Enhanced Magnetic Coolers and Molecular Magnets

Tandem templating strategies facilitate the assembly of calix[8]arene-supported Ln18 clusters

Calix[n]arenes offer ideal chemical functionality through the polyphenolic lower rim to construct nano-sized coordination clusters with lanthanide (Ln) metal ions (e.g., NdIII10, GdIII8). However, the number of metal centers they can accommodate is still limited compared to that achievable with smaller ligands (e.g., GdIII140, GdIII104). Here, we exploit a combination of the "anion template strategy" and "templating ligands" to synthesise three highly symmetric (D3h, trigonal planar) LnIII18 (Ln = La, Nd, and Gd) systems, representing the largest calix[n]arene-based coordination clusters yet. The LnIII18 fragment is templated by a chloride anion located at the center of the cluster, wherefrom twelve μ3-OH- ligands bind 'internally' to the eighteen LnIII ions. 'Externally' the metallic skeleton is connected by p-tert-butylcalix[8]arene, oxo, chloro and carbonate ligands. The crystal packing in the lattice reveals large cylindrical channels of ∼26 Å in diameter, whose pore volume corresponds to ∼50% of the unit cell volume (using a 1.2 Å spherical probe radius). Magnetic measurements reveal the predominance of weak antiferromagnetic exchange in the Gd analog. Heat capacity data of GdIII18 reveal a high magnetic entropy with -ΔSm = 23.7 J K-1 kg-1, indicating potential for engineering magnetic refrigerant materials with calix[8]arenes.

Controlled Hydrolysis of Phosphate Esters: A Route to Calixarene-Supported Rare-Earth Clusters

Phosphate ester bonds are widely present in nature (e. g. DNA/RNA) and can be extremely stable against hydrolysis without the help of catalysts. Previously, we showed how the combination of phosphoryl and calix[4]arene moieties in the same organic framework (L_PO ) allows isolation of single lanthanide (Ln) metal ions as [Ln^III (L_PO )₂ ](O₃ SCF₃ )₃ . Here we report how by controlling the reaction conditions a new hydrolyzed phosphoryl-calix[4]arene ligand (H₃ L_HPO ) is formed as a result of Ln^III -mediated P-OEt bond cleavage in three out of the eight possible sites in L_PO . The chelating nature of H₃ L_HPO traps the Ln^III species in the form of [Ln^III (L_HPO )((EtO)₂ P(O)OH)]₂ dimers (Ln=La, Dy, Tb, Gd), where the Dy derivative shows slow magnetization relaxation. The strategy presented herein could be extended to access a broader library of hydrolyzed platforms (H_x L_HPO ; x=1-8) that may represent mimics of nuclease enzymes.

Magnet-Free Time-Resolved Magnetic Circular Dichroism with Pulsed Vector Beams

Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) is a widely used spectroscopic technique which reveals valuable information about molecular geometry and electronic structure. However, the weak signal and the necessary strong magnets impose major limitations on its application. We propose a novel protocol to overcome these limitations by using pulsed vector beams (VBs), which consist of nanosecond gigahertz pump and femtosecond UV-vis probe pulses. By virtue of the strong longitudinal electromagnetic fields, the MCD signal detected by using the pulsed VBs is greatly enhanced compared to conventional MCD performed with plane waves. Furthermore, varying the pump-probe time delay allows monitoring the ultrafast variation of molecular properties.

Assembly-induced spin transfer and distance-dependent spin coupling in atomically precise AgCu nanoclusters

Nanoparticle assembly paves the way for unanticipated properties and applications from the nanoscale to the macroscopic world. However, the study of such material systems is greatly inhibited due to the obscure compositions and structures of nanoparticles (especially the surface structures). The assembly of atomically precise nanoparticles is challenging, and such an assembly of nanoparticles with metal core sizes strictly larger than 1 nm has not been achieved yet. Here, we introduced an on-site synthesis-and-assembly strategy, and successfully obtained a straight-chain assembly structure consisting of Ag₇₇Cu₂₂(CHT)₄₈ (CHT: cyclohexanethiolate) nanoparticles with two nanoparticles separated by one S atom, as revealed by mass spectrometry and single crystal X-ray crystallography. Although Ag₇₇Cu₂₂(CHT)₄₈ bears one unpaired shell-closing electron, the magnetic moment is found to be mainly localized at the S linker with magnetic isotropy, and the sulfur radicals were experimentally verified and found to be unstable after disassembly, demonstrating assembly-induced spin transfer. Besides, spin nanoparticles are found to couple and lose their paramagnetism at sufficiently short inter-nanoparticle distance, namely, the spin coupling depends on the inter-nanoparticle distance. However, it is not found that the spin coupling leads to the nanoparticle growth.

The assembly of atomically precise clusters into ordered superstructures enables new functional material designs. Here, the authors propose a strategy for linear arrangements of AgCu clusters and explore the consequent transfer and coupling of magnetic spins.

Significantly Enhancing the Single-Molecule-Magnet Performance of a Dinuclear Dy(III) Complex by Utilizing an Asymmetric Auxiliary Organic Ligand

In this work, we employed an asymmetric auxiliary organic ligand (1,1,1-trifluoroacetylacetone, Htfac) to further regulate the magnetic relaxation behavior of series of Dy₂ single-molecule magnets (SMMs) with a N1,N3-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)diethylenetriamine (H₂L) ligand. Fortunately, an air-stable Dy₂ complex, [Dy₂(L)₂(tfac)₂] (1; Htfac = 1,1,1-trifluoroacetylacetone) was obtained at room temperature. A structural analysis indicated that some Dy-O or Dy-N bond lengths for 1 are not in the range of those for the complexes [Dy^III₂(L)₂(acac)₂]·2CH₂Cl₂ (Dy₂-acac; Hacac = acetylacetone) and [Dy^III₂(L)₂(hfac)₂] (Dy₂-hfac; Hhfac = hexafluoroacetylacetone), although the electron-withdrawing ability of tfac^- is stronger than that of acac^- but weaker than that of hfac^-. Additionally, the Dy-O3/O3a (the two O atoms bridged to Dy^III ions) bond lengths are also affected by the asymmetrical Htfc ligand. This indicated that the charge distribution of the coordination atoms around Dy^III has been modified in 1, which leads to the fine-tuning of the magnetic relaxation behavior of 1. Magnetic studies indicated that the values of effective energy barrier (U_eff) for 1 and its diluted sample (2) are 234.8(3) and 188.0(6) K, respectively, which are both higher than the reported value of 110 K for the complex Dy₂-hfac. More interestingly, 1 exhibits a magnetic hysteresis opening when T < 2.5 K at zero field, while the hysteresis loops of 2 are closed at a zero dc field. This discrepancy is due to the weak intramolecular exchange coupling in 2, which cannot overcome the QTM of the single Dy^III ion. Ab initio calculations for 1 revealed that the charge distributions of the coordination atoms around Dy^III ions were regulated and the intramolecular exchange coupling was indeed improved when the asymmetrical Htfc was employed as a ligand for the synthesis of this kind of Dy₂ SMM.

In silico design to enhance the barrier height for magnetization reversal in Dy(iii) sandwich complexes by stitching them under the umbrella of corannulene

Lanthanide based single molecular magnets (SMMs), particularly dysprocenium based SIMs, are well known for their high energy barrier for spin reversal (U eff) and blocking temperatures (T B). Enhancing these two parameters and at the same time obtaining ambient stability is key to realising end-user applications such as compact storage or as qubits in quantum computing. In this work, by employing an array of theoretical tools (DFT, ab initio CASSCF and molecular dynamics), we have modelled six complexes [(η5-corannulene)Dy(Cp)] (1), [(η5-corannulene)Dy(C6H6)] (2), [(η6-corannulene)Dy(Cp)] (3), [(η6-corannulene)Dy(C6H6)] (4), [(exo-η5-corannulene)Dy(endo-η5-corannulene)] (5), and [(endo-η5-corannulene)Dy(endo-η5-corannulene)] (6) containing corannulene as a capping ligand to stabilise Dy(iii) half-sandwich complexes. Our calculations predict a strong axiality exerted by the Dy-C interactions in all complexes. Ab initio calculations predict a very large barrier height for all six molecules in the order 1 (919 cm-1) ≈ 3 (913 cm-1) > 2 (847 cm-1) > 4 (608 cm-1) ≈ 5 (603 cm-1) ≈ 6 (599 cm-1), suggesting larger barrier heights for Cp ring systems, followed by six-membered arene systems and then corannulene. DFT based molecular dynamics calculations were performed on complexes 3, 5 and 6. For complexes 3 and 5, the geometries that are dynamically accessible are far fewer. The range of U eff computed for molecular dynamics snapshots is high, indicating a possibility of translating the large U eff obtained into attractive blocking temperatures in these complexes, but the converse is found for 6. Furthermore, an in-depth C-H bond vibrational analysis performed on complex 3 suggests that the vibration responsible for reducing the blocking temperature in dysprocenium SIMs is absent here as the C-H bonds are stronger and corannulene steric strain prevents the C(Cp)-Dy-C(Cor) bending. As [(η6-corannulene)TM(X)]+ (TM = Ru, Zr, Os, Rh, Ir and X = C5Me5, C6Me6) are known, the predictions made here have a higher prospect of yielding stability under ambient conditions, a very large U eff value and a high blocking temperature - a life-giving combination to new generation SMMs.

Carboxylate-Decorated Aggregation of Octanuclear Co4Ln4 (Ln = Dy, Ho, Yb) Complexes from Ligand-Controlled Hydrolysis: Synthesis, Structures, and Magnetic Properties

One-pot reactions of an asymmetric carboxy-ether-phenol based Schiff base H₂L (2-((2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)amino)benzoic acid) with selected Ln(NO₃)₃·nH₂O and [Co₂(μ-OH₂)(O₂CCMe₃)₄(HO₂CCMe₃)₄] (Co₂-Piv) in basic MeOH medium resulted in a family of three octanuclear complexes, [Co^II₄Ln^III₄L₄(μ_1,3-Piv)₄(μ_1,1,3-Piv)₂(η¹-Piv)₂(μ₃-OH)₄(MeOH)₂]·mMeOH·nH₂O (Ln = Dy; m = 3, n = 1 (1), Ho; m = 4, n = 0 (2), Yb; m = 3, n = 1 (3)). The coordination aggregates thus obtained were nicely sustained by four ligand anions and eight externally added carboxylate anions showing three different modes of intermetallic connectivity. The options for incorporating different 4f ions in an investigative synthesis, without altering the resulting intermetallic core structure, were successful for the three representative examples. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the compounds are isostructural and built from two initially formed partial dicubane-type Co₂Ln₂L₂ units. In each of the tetranuclear parts, the metal ion centers are held together by two L^2-, two μ₃-HO^-, three Piv^- bridges, one terminal Piv^-, and one terminal MeOH. Four carboxylate ends of four L^2- units are responsible for connecting two Co₂Ln₂ units into octanuclear structures. The unique distortion around the Co^II centers is achieved from the facile coordination of bigger 4f ions to the adjacent hard OO sites. The distortion is further maintained by the presence of terminal COO^- groups from L^2-. The dc magnetic susceptibility data revealed ferromagnetic coupling between the Co^II and Ln^III centers within the series, whereas the ac magnetic susceptibility measurements identified only 1, having a highly anisotropic Dy^III ion, as a single-molecule magnet in the absence of any external magnetic field, with an energy barrier U_eff of 12.5 K.

Heterodinuclear [Co-Ln] complexes of semicarbazide-arm bearing ligand: synthesis from the cleavage of starting [Co-Co] complex, structures and magnetic properties

Cleavage of a [Co-Co] precursor by an anionic form of 1-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)semicarbazide in the presence of Ln(NO)₃·nH₂O salts provided new dinuclear [Co-Ln] complexes from a single-ligand anion support and scrambling of pivalate ions.

Exploiting complementary ligands for the construction of square antiprismatic monometallic lanthanide SMMs

The methylation of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene in the distal 1,3-phenolic sites provides the ligand H2L = {p-tert-butylcalix[4](OMe)2(OH)2arene} that enables construction of heteroleptic mononuclear lanthanide complexes. The reaction of (N(nBu)4)(acac) (Hacac = acetylacetone), MIIICl3 and H2L under Schlenk conditions results in the formation of a family of (N(nBu)4)[MIIIL(acac)2] complexes where M = Y (1), Gd (2), Tb (3) and Dy (4). The metal ions are eight-coordinate in distorted square-antiprismatic coordination geometries, resulting in slow relaxation of the magnetisation for the Tb derivative.

Phosphorylated-calix[4]arene double-deckers of single rare earth metal ions

Combination of phosphoryl and calix[4]arene moieties in the same organic framework (LPO) directs the formation of homoleptic double-decker complexes [LnIII(LPO)2](OTf)3 for Ln = Tb and Dy, with the latter displaying slow relaxation of the magnetisation.

Field-induced single molecule magnet behavior of a dinuclear cobalt(II) complex: a combined experimental and theoretical study

Two dinuclear cobalt(ii) complexes, [(dmso)CoIIL1(μ-(m-NO2)C6H4COO)CoII(NCS)] (1) and [(dmso)CoIIL2(μ-(m-NO2)C6H4COO)CoII(NCS)] (2) [dmso = dimethylsulfoxide, H2L1 = (2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediyl)bis(iminomethylene)bis(6-methoxyphenol) and H2L2 = (2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediyl)bis(iminomethylene)bis(6-ethoxyphenol)] have been synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic-susceptibility measurements and various spectroscopic techniques. Each complex contains a cobalt(ii) center with a slightly distorted octahedral geometry and a second cobalt(ii) center with a distorted trigonal prismatic one. To obtain insight into the physical nature of weak non-covalent interactions, we have extensively used the Bader's quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules (QTAIM). In addition, the non-covalent interaction reduced density gradient (NCI-RDG) methods established the presence of such non-covalent intermolecular interactions. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements show that both cobalt centers in each complex are in the high spin state (S = 3/2) and both complexes show weak ferromagnetic couplings through the double phenoxido bridges (J = 3.36(3) cm-1 in 1 and 4.56(2) cm-1 in 2). The magnetic properties of both complexes can be fitted to a Co(ii) dimer model including similar orbital reduction factors (α = -0.94(1) for 1 and -0.85(1) for 2) although different zero field splitting parameters D(1) = 11.0(4) cm-1 and D(2) = 19.5(4) cm-1 in 1 and D(1) = 8.2(4) cm-1 and D(2) = -1.3(4) cm-1 in 2. AC magnetic measurements reveal that the CoII2 unit in complex 2 exhibits field-induced slow relaxation of the magnetization at low temperatures and high frequencies.

Magneto-structural studies of an unusual [MnIIIMnIIGdIII(OR)4]4- partial cubane from 2,2'-bis-p-tBu-calix[4]arene

Reaction of 2,2'-bis-p-tBu-calix[4]arene (H8L) with MnCl2·4H2O, GdCl3·6H2O and 2,6-pyridinedimethanol (H2pdm) affords [MnIIIMnIIGdIII(H3L)(pdmH)(pdm)(MeOH)2(dmf)]·3MeCN·dmf (3·3MeCN·dmf) upon vapour diffusion of MeCN into the basic dmf/MeOH mother liquor. 3 crystallises in the tetragonal space group P41212 with the asymmetric unit comprising the entire cluster. The highly unusual core contains a triangular arrangement of MnIIIMnIIGdIII ions housed within a [MnIIIMnIIGdIII(OR)4]4- partial cubane. Magnetic susceptibility and magnetisation data reveal best fit parameters JMn(II)-Mn(III) = +0.415 cm-1, JMn(III)-Gd(III) = +0.221 cm-1, JMn(II)-Gd(III) = -0.258 cm-1 and DMn(III) = -4.139 cm-1. Theoretically derived magnetic exchange interactions, anisotropy parameters, and magneto-structural correlations for 3 are in excellent agreement with the experimental data.

Field-induced slow magnetic relaxation in mixed valence di- and tri-nuclear CoII-CoIII complexes

Two novel mixed valence Co^II-Co^III complexes, namely [Co^IICo^III(L1)(ab)(mb)₂(H₂O)]·dmf (1) and [CoCo^II(L2)₄(H₂O)₄]·2H₂O (2) [H₂L1 = (E)-2-((1-hydroxybutan-2-ylimino)methyl)-6-methoxyphenol, ab = 2-amino-butan-1-ol anion, mb = p-methyl benzoate, H₂L2 = 3-((2-hydroxy-3-methoxy-benzylidene)-amino)-propionic acid, and dmf = N,N-dimethyl-formamide], were synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction and magnetic studies at low temperature. The structure determination reveals that both complexes belong to the monoclinic system with P21/c (1) and I2/a (2) space groups. Complex 1 is a dinuclear Co^IIICo^II compound with distorted octahedral cobalt centers showing different coordination environments. In 2, a bent trinuclear CoCo^II complex, the coordination environments around the two terminal Co^III sites are alike, whereas they are different in the central Co^II ion. Alternating current/direct current (ac/dc) magnetic studies revealed that both complexes show field-induced slow magnetic relaxation. The dc magnetic susceptibility and magnetization data were analyzed with the following Hamiltonianwhere D and E are the axial and rhombic zero-field splitting (zfs) parameters, respectively, and a good agreement between experimental and simulated results was found using the parameters g_⊥ = 2.585, g_∥ = 2.437, D = +98.1 cm^-1, E/D = 0.008 and F = 8.2× 10^-5 for 1 and g_⊥ = 2.580, g_∥ = 2.580, D = +55.4 cm^-1, and E/D = 0.000 for 2.

Mixed Tb/Dy coordination ladders based on tetra(carboxymethyl)thiacalix[4]arene: a new avenue towards luminescent molecular nanomagnets

The macrocyclic ligand calix[4]arene (L1) and its sulphur-containing analogue thia[4]calixarene (L2) are promising precursors for functional molecular materials as they offer rational functionalization with various organic groups. Here, we present the first example of lanthanide-based coordination polymers built from the macrocyclic thiacalix[4]arene backbone bearing four carboxylic moieties, namely, ligand H₄L3. The combination of H₄L3 with the Tb³⁺ and Dy³⁺ cations led to the formation of 1D ladder-type coordination polymers with the formula [Ln^IIIHL3DMF₃]·(DMF) (where DMF = dimethylformamide and Ln = Tb or Dy, denoted as HL3–Tb and HL3–Dy), which resulted from the coordination of the lanthanide cations with the partially deprotonated ligand HL3³⁻ that behaved as a T-shape connector. The coordination sphere around the metal was completed by the coordinated DMF solvent molecules. By combining both Tb³⁺ and Dy³⁺ cations, isostructural heterobimetallic solid solutions HL3–Tb_1−xDy_x were also prepared. HL3–Tb and HL3–Dy showed visible light photoluminescence originating from the f–f electronic transitions of pale green emissive Tb³⁺ and pale yellow emissive Dy³⁺ with efficient sensitization by the functionalized thia[4]calixarene ligand HL3. In the HL3–Tb_1−xDy_x solid solutions, the Tb/Dy ratio governed both the emission colour as well as the emission quantum yield, which reached even 28% at room temperature for HL3–Tb. Moreover, HL3–Dy exhibited a slow magnetic relaxation effect related to the magnetic anisotropy of the dodecahedral Dy³⁺ complexes, which were well isolated in the crystal lattice by expanded organic spacers.

The single crystals of the two isostructural Tb³⁺- and Dy³⁺-based coordination polymers (HL3–Tb and HL3–Dy) were structurally characterized, and their photophysical properties were investigated, together with their corresponding solid solutions.

1D Copper(II)-Aroylhydrazone Coordination Polymers: Magnetic Properties and Microwave Assisted Oxidation of a Secondary Alcohol

The 1D Cu(II) coordination polymers [Cu₃(L¹)(NO₃)₄(H₂O)₂]_n (1) and [Cu₂(H₂L²)(NO₃)(H₂O)₂]_n(NO₃)_n (2) have been synthesized using the aroylhyrazone Schiff bases N'¹,N'²-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)oxalohydrazide (H₂L¹) and N'¹,N'³-bis(2-hydroxybenzylidene)malonohydrazide (H₄L²), respectively. They have been characterized by elemental analysis, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), single crystal X-ray diffraction and variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements (for 2). The ligand (L¹)²⁻ coordinates in the iminol form in 1, whereas the amide coordination is observed for (H₂L²)²⁻ in 2. Either the ligand bridge or the nitrate bridge in 2 mediates weak antiferromagnetic coupling. The catalytic performance of 1 and 2 has been investigated toward the solvent-free microwave-assisted oxidation of a secondary alcohol (1-phenylethanol used as model substrate). At 120°C and in the presence of the nitroxyl radical 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperydil-1-oxyl (TEMPO), the complete conversion of 1-phenylethanol into acetophenone occurs with TOFs up to 1,200 h⁻¹.

Constructing [CoII6] hexagon-centered heterometallic {Ln6Co6} (Ln = Y, Eu and Dy) clusters with a calix[8]arene ligand

Three isostructural 3d–4f polynuclear clusters {(LnIII6CoII6)(C8A)₃} (Ln = Y, Eu, Dy; C8A = p-tert-butylcalix[8]arene) feature some tripod-like entities in which three Ln₂-C8A SBUs bolster a [Co₆] hexagon.

Syntheses, structures and magnetic properties of novel tetrameric Ln2Mn2 and ring-like Ln4Mn4 clusters

Two series of heterometallic Ln–Mn clusters Ln2Mn2 and Ln4Mn4 were successfully synthesized in the presence of alcohol ligands, and the magnetic coupling interaction between metal ions were characterized by theoretical calculations.

Nuclearity control in calix[4]arene-based zinc(ii) coordination complexes

Three zinc-based coordination complexes were selectively generated in the crystalline phase using a new flexible molecular “tweezers” calix[4]arene derivative ligand decorated with two appended carboxylic moieties and benzyl spacers ((3-4H)).

Role of Ab Initio Calculations in the Design and Development of Organometallic Lanthanide-Based Single-Molecule Magnets

Single-molecule magnets based on lanthanides are very attractive due to their potential applications proposed in the area of microelectronic devices. Very recent advances in this area are due to the blend of conventional lanthanide chemistry with organometallic ligands, and several breakthrough achievements are attained with this combination. Ab initio methods based on multi-reference CASSCF calculations are playing a vital role in the design and development of such molecules. In this minireview, we aim to appraise various contributions in the area of organometallic lanthanide complexes (those containing lanthanide-carbon bonds) and describe how these robust wavefunction-based methods have played a constructive role not only in rationalizing the observed magnetic properties but also proven to be a potential predictive tool with some selected examples.

Synthesis, crystal structures and magnetic properties of a series of chair-like heterometallic [Fe4Ln2] (Ln = GdIII, DyIII, HoIII, and ErIII) complexes with mixed organic ligands

Four chair-like hexanuclear Fe-Ln complexes containing mixed organic ligands, namely, [Fe₄Ln₂{(py)₂CO₂}₄(pdm)₂(NO₃)₂(H₂O)₂Cl₄]·xCH₃CN·yH₂O (Ln = Gd^III (1, x = 1, y = 0), Dy^III (2, x = 1, y = 1), Ho^III (3, x = 0, y = 2), and Er^III (4, x = 1, y = 3); (py)₂CO₂H₂ = the gem-diol form of di-2-pyridyl ketone and pdmH₂ = 2,6-pyridinedimethanol) have been obtained by employing di-2-pyridyl ketone and 2,6-pyridinedimethanol reacting with FeCl₃ and Ln(NO₃)₃ in MeCN. The structures of 1-4 are similar to each other except for the number of lattice solvent molecules. Four Fe^III and two Ln^III in these complexes comprise a chair-like core with the "body" constructed by four Fe^III ions and the "end" constructed by two Ln^III ions. Among the four compounds, 2 shows field-induced single molecule magnet behavior as revealed by ac magnetic susceptibility studies, with the effective energy barrier and the pre-exponential factor of 22.07 K and 8.44 × 10^-7 s, respectively. Ab initio calculations indicated that, among 2_Dy, 3_Ho and 4_Er fragments, the energy gap between the lowest two spin-orbit states for 2_Dy is the largest, while the tunneling gap for 2 is the smallest. These might be the reasons for complex 2 exhibiting SMM behavior. Additionally, the orientations of the magnetic anisotropy of Dy^III in 2 were obtained by electrostatic calculations and ab initio calculations, both indicating that the directions of the main magnetic axis of Dy1 ions are almost aligned along Dy1-O5 (O5 from the pdm^2- ligand).

Rationalizing the sign and magnitude of the magnetic coupling and anisotropy in dinuclear manganese(iii) complexes

We have synthesised twelve manganese(iii) dinuclear complexes, 1-12, in order to understand the origin of magnetic exchange (J) between the metal centres and the magnetic anisotropy (D) of each metal ion using a combined experimental and theoretical approach. All twelve complexes contain the same bridging ligand environment of one μ-oxo and two μ-carboxylato, that helped us to probe how the structural parameters, such as bond distance, bond angle and especially Jahn-Teller dihedral angle affect the magnetic behaviour. Among the twelve complexes, we found ferromagnetic coupling for five and antiferromagnetic coupling for seven. DFT computed the J and ab initio methods computed the D parameter, and are in general agreement with the experimentally determined values. The dihedral angle between the two Jahn-Teller axes of the constituent MnIII ions are found to play a key role in determining the sign of the magnetic coupling. Magneto-structural correlations are developed by varying the Mn-O distance and the Mn-O-Mn angle to understand how the magnetic coupling changes upon these structural changes. Among the developed correlations, the Mn-O distance is found to be the most sensitive parameter that switches the sign of the magnetic coupling from negative to positive. The single-ion zero-field splitting of the MnIII centres is found to be negative for complexes 1-11 and positive for complex 12. However, the zero-field splitting of the S = 4 state for the ferromagnetic coupled dimers is found to be positive, revealing a significant contribution from the exchange anisotropy - a parameter which has long been ignored as being too small to be effective.

Exchange Interactions Switch Tunneling: A Comparative Experimental and Theoretical Study on Relaxation Dynamics by Targeted Metal Ion Replacement

The magnetic relaxation and magnetization blocking barriers of tailor-made homo- and heterodinuclear compounds [Dy₂ (opch)₂ (OAc)₂ (H₂ O)₂ ]⋅MeOH (1) and [DyMn(opch)₂ (OAc)(MeOH)(H₂ O)₂ ] (2), where H₂ opch is (E)-N'-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)pyrazine-2-carbohydrazide, were systematically investigated and the change in single-molecule magnet behavior originating from targeted replacement of one dysprosium site in the Dy₂ compound with manganese was elucidated through a combination of experimental and theoretical studies. A detailed comparative study on these closely related model compounds revealed remarkable changes of the crystal-field splitting and anisotropy of the Dy site and the total exchange spectrum due to the replacement of Dy by Mn. The blocking barriers of these two compounds, which explain their different relaxation behaviors, were analyzed. The two Ising doublets arising from the magnetic interaction in the case of 1 are strongly uniaxial, with tunneling splittings smaller than 10^-6  cm^-1 , and this leads to magnetic relaxation at temperatures exceeding the exchange energy (2.14 cm^-1 ), which involves transition via the excited states corresponding to local transitions on the excited doublet at the Dy site. The third and fourth exchange doublets in 2 (located at 2.16 and 3.25 cm^-1 , respectively) show much larger tunneling splittings (of 10^-4 and 10^-3  cm^-1 , respectively), and thus open an important path for magnetic relaxation.

Multifunctional luminescent magnetic cryocooler in a Gd5Mn2 pyramidal complex

Magnetic cooling is a highly efficient refrigeration technique with the potential of replacing expensive and rare helium-3 in the field of ultra-low temperature cooling. However, the visualization of a cryogen at an extremely low temperature and in a strong magnetic field is challenging, but it is crucial for the precise positioning and in situ thermal probe measurements in potential practical applications. Here, the activation of a red-emissive Mn(ii) ion using 3d/4f chemistry produces a luminescent molecule cooler, [Gd5Mn2(LOMe)2(OH)4(Ac)6(MeOH)10Cl2]Cl3·2MeOH (1), with the core of an Mn(ii)-anchored heptanuclear [GdIII5MnII2] pyramid. The photoluminescence (PL) of the Mn2+ emission, with a large Stokes shift (λem ∼ 690 nm) from 4T1(4G) → 6A1(6S), shows not only a sensitive temperature sensing property but also reversible mechanoluminescence (ML). More attractively, these findings reveal a considerable magnetocaloric effect (MCE) coupled with a tunable emission window, opening up new opportunities in the multifunctional applications of PL, ML, and the MCE involving red-light sources, thermometers, and stress imaging. In particular, this provides a novel resolution to design visualized PL coolers.

A monomeric bowl-like pyrogallol[4]arene Ti12 coordination complex

Herein, an unprecedented monomeric bowl-like coordination complex, Ti₁₂PgC₃ (PgC₃ = C-propylpyrogallol[4]arene), has been successfully synthesized. To the best of our knowledge, Ti₁₂PgC₃ not only presents the first pyrogallol[4]arene-based titanium coordination complex, but also the highest nuclearity titanium coordination complex in the metal-calixarene system. In addition, this titanium coordination complex can effectively degrade the methylene blue (MB) dye under sunlight.

Organoamine-induced isomerism of calixarene-based complexes: from 1D to 2D

Two isomers of the calixarene-based cobalt complex [Co₄Cl(TC4A)(BCPT)₂]⁻ (H₄TC4A = p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene; H₂BCPT = 3,5-bis (4′-carboxy-phenyl)-1,2,4-triazole) were obtained under the solvothermal conditions with tetramethylammonium/tetraethylammonium hydroxide (CIAC-236) and triethylamine (CIAC-237). Single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that CIAC-236 has a 1D zigzag aggregate constructed by bridging the shuttlecock-like Co₄–TC4A secondary building units (SBUs) with two pairs of opposite V-shaped BCPT ligands while CIAC-237 possesses a 2D layer assembly with each Co₄–TC4A SBU bonded by four BCPT ligands in a same direction (clockwise or counterclockwise), which indicates that different shapes of the organoamines lead to different assembly of the BCPT ligands and the formation of different extended aggregates. For comparison, only the 1D structure ([Fe₄Cl(TC4A)](BCPT)₂]⁻, CIAC-238) was obtained for the iron complexes with all these three organoamines, which would be attributed to different property and coordination of iron element. Magnetic properties of all these three compounds were studied.

Two isomers of the calixarene-based cobalt complex, 1D aggregate and 2D network, were obtained with different organoamine templates.
