Abstract
Achieving precise and controllable hierarchical self-assembly of functional nanoclusters within crystal lattices to create distinct architectures is of immense significance, yet it creates considerable challenges. Here we successfully synthesized a silver nanowheel Ag40, along with its optically pure enantiomers S-/R-Ag40. Each species possesses an internal nanospace and exhibits host-guest interactions. These structures are constructed from primary building blocks (Ag9). By manipulating the surface anions and guest molecules, the nanowheels function as secondary building blocks, spontaneously organizing into complex double- and triple-helical crystalline superstructures or one-dimensional chains {Ag41}n through conformational matching and diverse noncovalent interactions. Moreover, we demonstrate that the water-mediated complex specifically assembled with uridine monophosphate nucleotides, resulting in chiral assemblies of Ag40 that exhibit chiroptical activity for specific recognition. Our findings provide insights into the efficient construction of assemblies with hollow frameworks and propose strategies for superstructure engineering by manipulating surface motifs.

Abstract
Metal nanomaterials have been extensively investigated owing to their unique properties in contrast to bulk counterparts. Gold nanoparticles (e. g., 3-100 nm) show quasi-continuous energy bands, while gold nanoclusters (<3 nm) and complexes exhibit discrete energy levels and display entirely different photophysical properties than regular nanoparticles. This review summarizes the electronic dynamics of these three types of gold materials studied by ultrafast spectroscopy. Briefly, for gold nanoparticles, their electronic relaxation is dominated by heat dissipation between the electrons and the lattice. In contrast, gold nanoclusters exhibit single-electron transitions and relatively long excited-state lifetimes being analogous to molecules. In gold complexes, the excited-state dynamics is dominated by intersystem crossing and phosphorescence. A detailed understanding of the photophysical properties of gold nanocluster materials is still missing and thus calls for future efforts. The fundamental insights into the discrete electronic structure and the size-induced evolution in quantum-sized nanoclusters will promote the exploration of their applications in various fields.

Abstract
Due to the ubiquity of chirality in nature, chiral self-assembly involving self-sorting behaviors has remained as one of the most important research topics of interests. Herein, starting from a racemic mixture of SEG-based (SEG=SEGPHOS) chlorogold(I) precursors, a unique chiral butterfly-shape hexadecanuclear gold(I) cluster (Au16 ) with different ratios of RSEG and SSEG ligands is obtained via homoleptic and heterochiral self-sorting. More interestingly, by employing different chlorogold(I) precursors of opposite chirality (such as RSEG -Au2 and SBIN -Au2 (BIN=BINAP)), an unprecedented heteroleptic and heterochiral self-sorting strategy has been developed to give a series of heteroleptic chiral decanuclear gold(I) clusters (Au10 ) with propellor-shape structures. Heterochiral and heteroleptic self-sorting have also been observed between enantiomers of homoleptic chiral Au10 clusters to result in the heteroleptic chiral Au10 clusters via cluster-to-cluster transformation. Incorporation of heteroleptic ligands is found to decrease the symmetry from S4 of homoleptic meso Au10 to C2 of heteroleptic chiral Au10 clusters. The chirality has been transferred from the axial chiral ligands and stored in the heteroleptic gold(I) clusters.

Abstract
Two unprecedented tetratriacontanuclear and tetraicosanuclear gold(I) sulfido clusters (denoted as Au34-LMe and Au24-LCbz) with different temperature-induced stimulus-responsive behavior and emission property have been constructed by taking advantage of the judiciously designed bidentate phosphine ligand. Au34-LMe represents the highest nuclearity of the gold(I) sulfido cluster with more than a thousand atoms in the molecule. Octagonal macrocycles based on metal-cluster nodes have been assembled for the first time. The self-assembly and temperature-induced stimulus-responsive processes were monitored by 1H and 31P{1H} NMR spectroscopy, and the identities of the discrete gold(I) complexes were established by single-crystal structural analysis and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry data. The steric effects exerted by the substituents on the V-shaped 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)benzene ligand have been shown to govern the self-assembly from the 1D cluster and 3D cage to 2D macrocycles. This work not only offers a new strategy to construct and regulate the structure of 2D macrocyclic gold(I) sulfido complexes but also lays the foundation for the future precise design and controlled construction of higher polygonal and cluster-node macrocycles.

Abstract
Advances in new ligands in the last decade facilitated in-depth studies on the property-relationship of gold nanoclusters and promoted the rational synthesis and related applications of such materials. Currently, more and more new ligands are being explored; thus, the ligand library of AuNCs is being expanded fast, which also enables investigation of ligand effects of AuNCs via direct comparison of different ligating shell with the identical gold core. It is now widely accepted that ligands influence the properties of AuNCs enormously including stability, catalysis, photoluminescence among others. These studies inspired ligand engineering of AuNCs. One of the goals for ligand engineering is to develop ligated AuNC catalysts in which the ligands are able to exert big-enough influence on electronic and steric control over catalysis as in a transition-metal or an enzyme system. Although increasing attention is paid to the further expansion of ligand library, the investigation of design principles and strategies regarding ligands are still in their infant stage. This review summarizes the ligands for AuNC synthesis, the ligand effects on stability and catalysis, and recently developed strategies in promoting AuNC catalytic performance via ligand manipulation.

Abstract
Decanuclear and pentanuclear gold(I) sulfido complexes of phenanthrene- and dibenzothiophene-based diphosphine ligands were synthesized and characterized. Unprecedented stimuli-induced reversible transformation between decanuclear and pentanuclear gold(I) sulfido complexes was observed, which could be readily monitored by NMR and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy in solution. Remarkably, the decanuclear gold(I) sulfido complex (Au10-LPh) was found to show a highly reversible transformation process, which is stable for over 10 successive cycles in solution. The stimuli-induced reversible transformation behavior of the gold(I) sulfido complexes was found to depend on the P-P bite distance of the bidentate phosphine ligands.

Abstract
N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands support gold(I) sulfide complexes of varying nuclearity and charge. For sterically undemanding ligands, gold(I) chlorides react with sulfide to form trigold μ3-sulfido cations as the first observed products. The ligand IMes [1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene] supports a monomeric cation, whereas the ICy-(1,3-dicyclohexylimidazol-2-ylidene-) supported cation crystallises as a dimer linked through an aurophilic interaction. The more sterically demanding IDipp [1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene] supports a terminal hydrosulfide, a (μ-hydrosulfido)digold cation, and a μ3-sulfido cation. Use of the expanded-ring NHC 7Dipp [1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-1,3-diazepin-2-ylidene] allows the isolation of a neutral digold sulfide.

Abstract
The recently-increasing interest in coinage metal clusters stems from their photophysical properties, which are controlled via heterometallation. Herein, we report homometallic AgI 46 S13 clusters protected by octahedral fac-[Ir(aet)3 ] (aet=2-aminoethanethiolate) molecules and their conversion to heterometallic AgI 43 MI 3 S13 (M=Cu, Au) clusters. The reactions of fac-[Ir(aet)3 ] with Ag+ and penicillamine produced [Ag46 S13 {Ir(aet)3 }14 ]20+ ([1]20+ ), where a spherical AgI 46 S13 cluster is covered by fac-[Ir(aet)3 ] octahedra through thiolato bridges. [1]20+ was converted to [Ag43 M3 S13 {Ir(aet)3 }14 ]20+ ([1M ]20+ ) with an AgI 43 MI 3 S13 cluster by treatment with M+ , retaining its overall structure. [1]20+ was photoluminescent and had an emission band ca. 690 nm that originated from an S-to-Ag charge transfer. While [1Cu ]20+ showed an emission band with a slightly higher energy of ca. 650 nm and a lower quantum yield, the emission band for [1Au ]20+ shifted to a much higher energy of ca. 590 nm with an enhanced quantum yield.

Abstract
The hierarchical self-organization of structurally complex high-nuclearity metal clusters with metallosupramolecular wheel architectures that are obtained from the self-assembly of smaller solvated cluster units is rare and unique. Here, we use the potentially heteroditopic monothiocarbonate ligand and demonstrate for the first time the synthesis and structure of a solvated non-cyclic hexadecanuclear cluster [Cu{SC(O)OiPr}]16·2THF (1) that can simultaneously desolvate and self-assemble in solution and subsequently form a giant metallaring, [Cu{SC(O)OiPr}]96 (2). We also demonstrate a luminescent precursor to cluster (2) can be achieved through a solventless and rapid mechanochemical synthesis. Cluster (2) is the highest nuclearity copper(I) wheel and the largest metal cluster containing a heterodichalcogen (O, S) ligand reported to date. Cluster (2) also exhibits solid-state luminescence with relatively long emission lifetimes at 4.1, 13.9 (μs). The synthetic strategy described here opens new research avenues by replacing solvent molecules in stable {Cu16} clusters with designed building units that can form new hybrid and multifunctional finite supramolecular materials. This finding may lead to the development of novel high-nuclearity materials self-assembled in a facile manner with tunable optical properties.

Abstract
AuI complexes combining hard oxygen and soft (diphenylphosphanyl)ferrocene (L) ligands in their molecules were synthesized, viz. the gold hydroxides [Au(OH)(L-κP)] (5) and [{Au(L-κP)}2 (μ-OH)][BF4 ] (4), and the oxonium cluster [{Au(L-κP)}3 (μ3 -O)][BF4 ] (1). In-situ auration of 1 produced [{Au(L-κP)}4 (μ4 -O)][BF4 ]2 (2), which spontaneously converted into a dimeric tetragold complex featuring bridging phosphanylferrocenyl groups geminally diaurated in position 2 of the ferrocene scaffold. The same complex and its isomer incorporating ferrocene-1,1'-diyl bridges resulted similarly from 4. Upon crystallization, compound 5 underwent a redox reaction, producing a structurally unique, crown-like, mixed-valent Au0 /AuI cluster, [Au7 (L-κP)6 ]OH. Compounds 1 and 5 were used to prepare the analogous, N-bridged complexes, [{Au(L-κP)}3 (μ3 -NFc)][BF4 ] (Fc=ferrocenyl) and [{Au(L-κP)}4 (μ4 -N)][BF4 ]. The compounds were structurally characterized and further studied by DFT calculations.

Abstract
A decanuclear gold(I)-sulfido complex, [(LH)4Au10S4]Cl2 (LH-Au10S4-Cl, where LH = 4,5-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)-2H-1,2,3-triazole), assembled from the reaction of H2S with the chlorogold(I) precursor obtained from the click reaction of [dppa(AuCl)2] (where dppa = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)acetylene) with NaN3, is shown to display a bright dual green and red emission in the solid state. Single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) studies indicate a gold(I) cluster-based framework assembled through intermolecular halogen···hydrogen bonds as well as other weak interactions. The framework of LH-Au10S4-Cl is found to display high stability toward solvent molecules, with capability to encapsulate solvent molecules, such as benzene and cyclohexane, inside the crystal lattice voids via a single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformation. With different degrees of influence on the dual green and red emission, crystalline solids of LH-Au10S4-Cl exhibit remarkable solvatochromic luminescence in the presence of benzene and cyclohexane. Notably, due to the size confinement of the lattice cavities, the LH-Au10S4-Cl solids exhibit a high selectivity (>95%) toward benzene in a mixture of equimolar concentration of benzene and cyclohexane. This work has demonstrated the promising capability of gold(I)-sulfido cluster frameworks to serve as luminescent functional materials for the separation of benzene and cyclohexane.

Abstract
The first examples of porous molecular crystals that are assembled through Au⋅⋅⋅Au interactions of gold complex 1 are here reported along with their exchange properties with respect to their guest components. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses indicate that the crystal structure of 1/CH2 Cl2 ⋅pentane is based on cyclic hexamers of 1, which are formed through six Au⋅⋅⋅Au interactions. The packing of these cyclic hexamers affords a porous architecture, in which the one-dimensional channel segment contains CH2 Cl2 and pentane as guests. These guests can be exchanged through operationally simple methods under retention of the host framework of 1, which furnished 1/guest complexes with 26 different guests. A single-crystal XRD analysis of 1/eicosane, which contains the long linear alkane eicosane (n-C20 H42 ), successfully provided its accurately modeled structure within the porous material. These host-guest complexes show chromic luminescence with both blue- and redshifted emissions. Moreover, this porous organometallic material can exhibit luminescent mechanochromism through release of guests.

Abstract
Reactions of the phosphanyl-gold(I) precursor [(AuCl)2(bdppmapy)] (1; bdppmapy = N,N-bis(diphenylphosphanylmethyl)-2-aminopyridine) with Na2S in a 1:1 or 1:2 molar ratio gave rise to one tetradecanuclear and one octanuclear Au(I) sulfido cluster, [Au14S6(bdppmapy)5]Cl2 (2) and [Au18S8(bdppmapy)6]Cl2 (3), respectively. The former displays a new structural framework in gold cluster chemistry. Compounds 2 and 3 showed strong green luminescence and were employed as excellent imaging probes to selectively light up the lysosomes of living cells. Their long-term tracking of lysosomes can be achieved for up to 36 h, while tracking with commercial Lyso-Tracker Red under the same conditions was limited to 3 h. Our work demonstrated the possibility of constructing novel gold(I) sulfido clusters supported by special P-N hybrid ligands and the potential application of these clusters as long-term selective trackers of lysosomes in bioimaging.

Abstract
In this article, the synthesis, structural studies, and luminescence properties of CuI, AgI, and AuI complexes of pyrimidine-based phosphine [C4H3N2-2-NH(CH2PPh2)] (1) are described. The reactions of 1 with CuX led to the isolation of one-dimensional (1D) chain, tetranuclear ladder, or cyclic derivatives. The structural features of these complexes are greatly influenced by the metal-to-ligand ratio, reaction conditions, and CuX (X = Cl, Br or I) employed. In the case of CuCl and CuBr, one-dimensional coordination polymers [{CuCl}{C4H3N2-2-NH(CH2PPh2)}]∞ (2) and [{CuBr}{C4H3N2-2-NH(CH2PPh2)}]∞ (3) were obtained, whereas CuI afforded tetracopper complex [{CuI}4{C4H3N2-2-NH(CH2PPh2)}2(NCCH3)2] (4) having Cu4 ladder structure supported by P∩N-bridging coordination of 1. The reaction of 1 with AgOTf yielded unprecedented one-dimensional chain structure [{AgOTf}{C4H3N2-2-NH(CH2PPh2)}]∞ (5), whereas the reaction with AgBF4 produced a 12-membered dinuclear complex, [{Ag}{C4H3N2-2-NH(CH2PPh2)}]2[BF4]2 (6), with each silver atom having a linear geometry. Gold complex [{AuCl}{C4H3N2-2-NH(CH2PPh2)}]2 (7) was synthesized by reacting 1 with [AuCl(SMe2)]. Compounds 2-4 were also prepared using a pestle and mortar by grinding method in almost quantitative yield. Complex 4 with a Cu···Cu distance of 2.828(5) Å shows high luminescence due to the nonbonded metal···metal interactions.

Abstract
AbstractIn this article, synthetic strategies and characterization methodologies of atomically precise gold clusters have been summarized. The typical and effective synthetic strategies including a systematic “size-focusing” methodology has been developed for attaining atomically precise gold clusters with size control. Another universal synthetic methodology is ligand exchange-induced size/structure transformation (LEIST) based on from one stable size to another. These two methodologies have largely expanded the “universe” of atomically precise gold clusters. Elite of typical synthetic case studies of ligand protected gold clusters are presented. Important characterization techniques of these atomically precise gold clusters also are included. The identification and characterization of gold clusters have been achieved in terms of nuclearity (size), molecular formulation, and geometrical structures by the combination of these techniques. The determination of gold cluster structure based on single crystals is of paramount importance in understanding the relationship of structure–property. The criterion and selection of these typical gold clusters are all “strictly” atomically precise that all have been determined ubiquitously by single crystal diffraction. These related crystallographic data are retrieved from Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre (CCDC) up to 30th November 2017. Meanwhile, the cutting edge and other important characterization methodologies including electron diffraction (ED), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXFAS), and synchrotron sources are briefly reviewed. The new techniques hold the promise of pushing the limits of crystallization of gold clusters. This article is not just an exhaustive and up to date review, generally summarized synthetic strategies, but also a practical guide regarding gold cluster synthesis. We called it a “Cookbook” of ligand protected gold clusters, including synthetic recipes and characterization details.Graphical Abstract:

Abstract
Due to distinctive quantum confinement effects, ultrasmall gold nanoparticles usually exhibit interesting electronic structure and molecular-like properties. However, the lack of atomically-precise structural information makes the understanding of them almost impossible, such as understanding the relationships between their compositions and unique properties. Herein, by reducing a diphosphine AuI precursor (Au2(dppm)2Cl2; dppm = Ph2PCH2PPh2) with or without a S2- releasing reagent, we enriched our knowledge of the members in the families of Au13 and Au8 by the structural determinations of two new dppm-protected gold nanoclusters, [Au13(dppm)6]5+ (SD/Au1) and [Au8(dppm)4S2]2+ (SD/Au2), respectively. Within SD/Au1, the Au13 kernel significantly deviates from the ideal Ih icosahedron by the elongation of three surface Au-Au bonds to ∼3.5 Å, giving it C3 symmetry, whereas SD/Au2 has a novel heart-shaped C2 symmetric Au8S2 core (central Au4 tetrahedron + two Au2S units) protected by four μ2-dppm ligands in the outer shell. Of note, SD/Au1 represents a rare Au13 nanocluster with an opened icosahedral geometry, and SD/Au2 shows a new edge-shared "core + 4exo" structure type that has never been observed before. The electronic structures and optical absorption spectra of these systems are correlated with time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations. Based on the spherical jellium model, the stability of the Au13 and Au8 nanoclusters can be ascribed to 8- and 2-electron superatoms with 1S21P6 and 1S2 configurations, respectively. Interestingly, the cluster SD/Au2 exhibits bright yellow luminescence with an emission maximum at 591 nm that slightly hypsochromically shifts to 581 nm upon cooling to 93 K. Our findings not only enrich the family of diphosphine-protected ultrasmall gold nanoclusters, but also demonstrate the rich variations of gold kernels during the transformation from a simple AuI precursor to Au nanoclusters.

Abstract
By employing chiral precursors, a new class of chiral gold(I)-sulfido clusters with unique structures has been constructed. Interestingly, pure enantiomers of the precursors are found to self-assemble into chiral hexa- and decanuclear clusters sequentially, while a racemic mixture of them has resulted in heterochiral self-sorting of an achiral meso decanuclear cluster. Chirality has determined not only the symmetry and structures but also the photophysical behaviors of these clusters. The racemic mixture of decanuclear clusters undergoes rearrangement and heterochiral self-sorting to give a meso decanuclear cluster. The thermodynamic-driven heterochiral self-sorting of gold(I) clusters provides a means to develop controlled self-assembly that may be of relevance to the understanding of chirality in nature.
