Tracking of the Nuclear Wavepacket Motion in Cyanine Photoisomerization by Ultrafast Pump–Dump–Probe Spectroscopy

Triple-Phosphorescent Gold Nanoclusters Enabled by Isomerization of Terminal Thiouracils in the Surface Motifs

Metal nanoclusters (NCs) hold great promise for expressing multipeak emission based on their well-defined total structure with diverse luminescent centers. Herein, we report the surface motif-dictated triple phosphorescence of Au NCs with dynamic color turning. The deprotonation-triggered isomerization of terminal thiouracils can evolve into a mutual transformation among their hierarchical motifs, thus serving a multipeak-emission expression with good tailoring. More importantly, the underlying electron transfer is thoroughly identified by excluding the radiative and nonradiative energy transfer, where electrons flow from the first phosphorescent state to the last two ones. The findings shed light on finely tailing motifs at the molecular level to motivate studies on customizable luminescence characteristics of metal NCs.

Shortwave infrared polymethine dyes for bioimaging: ultrafast relaxation dynamics and excited-state decay pathways

Excited-state relaxation in two prototypical shortwave infrared (SWIR) polymethine dyes developed for bioimaging, heptamethine chromenylium Chrom7 and flavylium Flav7, is studied by means of femtosecond transient absorption with broadband ultraviolet-to-SWIR probing complemented by steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence and phosphorescence measurements. The relaxation processes of the dyes in dichloromethane are resolved with sub-100 fs temporal resolution using SWIR, near-IR, and visible photoexcitation. Different population members of the ground-state inhomogeneous ensemble are found to equilibrate via skeletal deformation changes with time constants of 90 fs and either 230 fs (Chrom7) and 350 fs (Flav7) followed by slower evolution matching the 1-ps timescale of diffusive solvation dynamics. Molecules excited into high-lying singlet electronic states (Sn) by visible excitation repopulate with time constants of 400 fs (Chrom7) and 450 fs (Flav7) the corresponding first excited singlet S1 states, which decay within several hundreds of picoseconds in dichloromethane and chloroform solvents. Vibrational relaxation in S1 for both Chrom7 and Flav7 in dichloromethane occurs with time constants of 350 and 800 fs for excess of vibrational energy of ∼1000 and 10 000 cm-1 deposited by near-IR and visible excitation, respectively. Two competing non-radiative processes are present in S1: temperature-independent internal conversion, and thermally-activated twisting about a carbon-carbon bond of the conjugated chain, which is substantial at room temperature but essentially nonreactive, producing traces of isomer product. Intersystem crossing in S1, and thus the triplet quantum yield, is minor. The importance of absorption bands from the excited S1 state in applications requiring high-intensity excitation conditions is discussed.

Evidence of Excited-State Vibrational Mode Governing the Photorelaxation of a Charge-Transfer Complex

Modern, nonlinear, time-resolved spectroscopic techniques have opened new doors for investigating the intriguing but complex world of photoinduced ultrafast out-of-equilibrium phenomena and charge dynamics. The interaction between light and matter introduces an additional dimension, where the complex interplay between electronic and vibrational dynamics needs the most advanced theoretical-computational protocols to be fully understood on the molecular scale. In this study, we showcase the capabilities of ab initio molecular dynamics simulation integrated with a multiresolution wavelet protocol to carefully investigate the excited-state relaxation dynamics in a noncovalent complex involving tetramethylbenzene (TMB) and tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) undergoing charge transfer (CT) upon photoexcitation. Our protocol provides an accurate description that facilitates a direct comparison between transient vibrational analysis and time-resolved spectroscopic signals. This molecular level perspective enhances our understanding of photorelaxation processes confined in the adiabatic regime and offers an improved interpretation of vibrational spectra. Furthermore, it enables the quantification of anharmonic vibrational couplings between high- and low-frequency modes, specifically the TCNQ "rocking" and "bending" modes. Additionally, it identifies the primary vibrational mode that governs the adiabaticity between the ground state and the CT state. This comprehensive understanding of photorelaxation processes holds significant importance in the rational design and precise control of more efficient photovoltaic and sensor devices.

Unveiling Solvation Dynamics of Excited and Ground States via Ultrafast Pump-Dump-Probe Spectroscopy

The conventional ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy has primarily focused on examining the formation and decay of the excited state intermediates, but it is very difficult to detect those intermediates while the formation is slow and dissipation is much fast because of the limited concentration during the intrinsic photocycle. To address this issue, a multipulse ultrafast pump-dump-probe spectroscopy was employed to generate and probe the short-lived ground state intermediates (GSIs) in an electronic push-pull pyrene derivative (EPP). This particular derivative undergoes planarized intramolecular charge transfer (PICT) in the excited state upon initial femtosecond pulse excitation. After applying the dump pulse once the PICT was formed, the blue-shifted transient absorption GSIs with the ground state dynamics of the structure recovery was directly observed. It is found that GSIs undergo slower reorganization than the PICT formation in the excited state of EPP due to the solvation effect with different dipole moments of ground states and excited states. These findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the full photocycle dynamics of both the ground and excited states, shedding light on the presence of hidden ground state behaviors.

Suppression of kernel vibrations by layer-by-layer ligand engineering boosts photoluminescence efficiency of gold nanoclusters

The restriction of structural vibration has assumed great importance in attaining bright emission of luminescent metal nanoclusters (NCs), where tremendous efforts are devoted to manipulating the surface landscape yet remain challenges for modulation of the structural vibration of the metal kernel. Here, we report efficient suppression of kernel vibration achieving enhancement in emission intensity, by rigidifying the surface of metal NCs and propagating as-developed strains into the metal core. Specifically, a layer-by-layer triple-ligands surface engineering is deployed to allow the solution-phase Au NCs with strong metal core-dictated fluorescence, up to the high absolute quantum yields of 90.3 ± 3.5%. The as-rigidified surface imposed by synergistic supramolecular interactions greatly influences the low-frequency acoustic vibration of the metal kernel, resulting in a subtle change in vibration frequency but a reduction in amplitude of oscillation. This scenario therewith impedes the non-radiative relaxation of electron dynamics, rendering the Au NCs with strong emission. The presented study exemplifies the linkage between surface chemistry and core-state emission of metal NCs, and proposes a strategy for brighter emitting metal NCs by regulating their interior metal core-involved motion.

Mapping of Wave Packet Dynamics at Conical Intersections by Time- and Frequency-Resolved Fluorescence Spectroscopy: A Computational Study

Monitoring of wave packet dynamics at conical intersections by time- and frequency-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy has been investigated theoretically for a three-state two-mode model of a conical intersection coupled to a dissipative environment. The ideal and the actually measurable time- and frequency-gated fluorescence spectra are accurately and efficiently simulated by combining the hierarchy equations-of-motion method for dissipative quantum dynamics with the methodology of the equation-of-motion phase-matching approach for the calculation of spectroscopic signals. It is shown that time- and frequency-resolved fluorescence spectra reveal essential aspects of the wave packet dynamics at conical intersections and the effects of environment-induced dissipation. The results of the present work indicate that fluorescence up-conversion spectroscopy with femtosecond time resolution is an efficient tool for the characterization of ultrafast dynamics at conical intersections.

Two-dimensional electronic-vibrational spectroscopic study of conical intersection dynamics: an experimental and electronic structure study

The relaxation from the lowest singlet excited state of the triphenylmethane dyes, crystal violet and malachite green, is studied via two-dimensional electronic-vibrational (2DEV) spectroscopy.

Time-resolved signatures across the intramolecular response in substituted cyanine dyes

The optically populated excited state wave packet propagates along multidimensional intramolecular coordinates soon after photoexcitation. This action occurs alongside an intermolecular response from the surrounding solvent. Disentangling the multidimensional convoluted signal enables the possibility to separate and understand the initial intramolecular relaxation pathways over the excited state potential energy surface. Here we track the initial excited state dynamics by measuring the fluorescence yield from the first excited state as a function of time delay between two color femtosecond pulses for several cyanine dyes having different substituents. We find that when the high frequency pulse precedes the low frequency one and for timescales up to 200 fs, the excited state population can be depleted through stimulated emission with efficiency that is dependent on the molecular electronic structure. A similar observation at even shorter times was made by scanning the chirp (frequencies ordering) of a femtosecond pulse. The changes in depletion reflect the rate at which the nuclear coordinates of the excited state leave the Franck-Condon (FC) region and progress towards achieving equilibrium. Through functional group substitution, we explore these dynamic changes as a function of dipolar change following photoexcitation. Density functional theory calculations were performed to provide greater insight into the experimental spectroscopic observations. Complete active space (CAS) self-consistent field and CAS second order perturbation theory calculated potential energy surfaces tracking twisting and pyramidalization confirm that the steeper potential at the FC region leads to the observation of faster wave packet dynamics.

Photoisomerization of 1,1′-diethyl-2,2′-carbocyanine iodide (pinacyanol) in alcohols was investigated by means of femtosecond time-resolved absorption spectroscopy.

Photochemistry and photophysics at extended seams of conical intersection

The role of extended seams of conical intersection in excited-state mechanisms is reviewed. Seams are crossings of the potential energy surface in many dimensions where the decay from the excited to the ground state can occur, and the extended seam is composed of different segments lying along a reaction coordinate. Every segment is associated with a different primary photoproduct, which gives rise to competing pathways. This idea is first illustrated for fulvene and ethylene, and then it is used to explain more complex cases such as the dependence of the isomerisation of retinal chromophore isomers on the protein environment, the dependence of the efficiency of the azobenzene photochemical switch on the wavelength of irradiation and the direction of the isomerisation, and the coexistence of different mechanisms in the photo-induced Wolff rearrangement of diazonaphthoquinone. The role of extended seams in the photophysics of the DNA nucleobases and the relationship between two-state seams and three-state crossings is also discussed. As an outlook, the design of optical control strategies based on the passage of the excited molecule through the seam is considered, and it is shown how the excited-state lifetime of fulvene can be modulated by shaping the energy of the seam.

Wave Packet Dynamics at an Extended Seam of Conical Intersection: Mechanism of the Light-Induced Wolff Rearrangement

Quantum dynamics calculations on a model surface based on CASPT2//CASSCF calculations are carried out to probe the traversal of a wave packet through an extended seam of conical intersection during the light-induced Wolff rearrangement of diazonaphtoquinone. The reaction is applied in the fabrication of integrated circuits. It consists of nitrogen elimination and ring rearrangement to yield a ketene. After excitation, the wave packet relaxes and reaches the extended seam. A fraction of the wave packet decays to the ground state at a region of the seam connected to a carbene intermediate, while the remaining part decays at a region leading to the ketene. The passage of the wave packet through the extended seam explains the competition between concerted ketene formation and a stepwise mechanism involving a carbene. The two primary photoproducts are formed in the first 100 fs of the simulation, in agreement with recent ultrafast spectroscopy measurements.
