Abstract
In this study, a novel dual Brønsted acidic-basic nano-scale porous organic polymer catalyst, PC4RA@SiPr-Pip-BuSO3H, was synthesized through various steps: preparation of a 3D network of polycalix, modification with (3-chloropropyl)-trimethoxysilane, then functionalization of polymer with piperazine and n-butyl sulfonic acid under the provided conditions. The catalyst characterization was performed by FT-IR, TGA, EDS, elemental mapping, PXRD, TEM, and FE-SEM analyses, confirming high chemical stability, activity, recoverability, and excellent covalent anchoring of functional groups. So, the designed catalyst was utilized for preparing spiro-acenaphthylene and amino-spiroindene heterocycles, providing good performance with a high yield of the corresponding products. Accordingly, this catalyst can be used in different organic transformations. Necessary experiments were conducted for the recyclability test of the polymeric catalyst, and the results showed the PC4RA@SiPr-Pip-BuSO3H catalyst can be reused 10 times without any decrease in its activity or quality with excellent stability. The structure of resultant spiro heterocycles was confirmed using 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and FT-IR.

Abstract
The formation of pseudocapsule type homo- and heteromultinuclear complexes of calix[6]-mono-crown-5 (H4L) encapsulating from 4 to 6 alkali metal ions is reported. H4L reacts with KOH to yield a hexanuclear potassium(I) complex [K6(HL)2(CH3OH)2]·CHCl3 (1) in which two bowl-shaped tripotassium(I) complex units are linked in a rim-to-rim fashion via the interligand C-H···π interactions. In the same reaction condition, RbOH afforded a tetranuclear rubidium(I) complex [Rb4(H2L)2(CH3OH)2(μ-H2O)2]·6CHCl3 (2). In 2, again two bowl-shaped dirubidium(I) complex units are held together by two bridging water molecules and C-H···π interactions that act as a glue to generate such an elegant pseudocapsule. Interestingly, a mixture of KOH and RbOH yielded a heterotetranuclear complex [K2Rb2(H2L)2(CH3OH)2(μ-H2O)2]·6CHCl3 (3). Similarly, two heterodinuclear bowl units [KRb(H2L)] in 3 are held together by two bridging water molecules and C-H···π interactions to form a heteromultinuclear pseudocapsule. In each heterodinuclear K+/Rb+ bowl unit of 3, Rb+ occupies the center of the crown loop while K+ locates inside the calix rim. Consequently, the proposed host discriminates not only on the types and numbers of the metal ions but also on their positional preferences in forming pseudocapsules. Solution studies by nuclear magnetic resonance and electrospray ionization-mass support the heterometallic (K+/Rb+) complexation by showing the superior binding affinity of Rb+ over K+ toward the crown loop. These results demonstrate how the metal-driven pseudocapsules are formed and present a new perspective on the metallosupramolecules of the calixcrown scaffold.

Abstract
In Nature, metal ions play critical roles at different levels, and they are often found in proteins. Therefore, metal ions are naturally incorporated in hydrogen-bonded systems. In addition, the combination of metal coordination and hydrogen bonds have been used extensively to develop supramolecular materials. However, despite this win-win combination between coordination and hydrogen bonds in many supramolecular systems, the same combination remains scarce in the field of coordination-driven self-assemblies. Indeed, as illustrated in this mini-review, only a few discrete supramolecular metalla-assemblies combining coordination and hydrogen bonds can be found in the literature, but that figure might change rapidly.

Abstract
Construction of large multi-component coordination cages becomes much more challenging as the number of building blocks increases. A giant hexameric calix[4]resorcinarene-based coordination cage (cage-1) was successfully designed through the precise tuning of ancillary rigid tetracarboxylic acid. Significantly, cage-1 exhibited reversible uptake of volatile iodine, suggesting that it could serve as a porous material for efficient capture and separation of radioactive iodine.

Abstract
Self-assembly of resorcin[4]arene-based coordination cages involving more than two resorcin[4]arenes poses significant challenges for the requirements of suitable functionalized resorcin[4]arene ligands and metals. Here, we report an unusual example of a metal-coordinated, resorcin[4]arene-based molecular trimer (1-NO3), composed of three resorcin[4]arenes and three Cd(II) cations. In particular, 1-NO3 features efficient and selective removal of environmentally toxic dichromate (Cr2O72-) anions. Moreover, the Knoevenagel condensation reaction was also explored by using 1-NO3 as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst.

Abstract
Coordination cages were composed by self-organization of rigid C3 v-symmetric heptaarene tridentates and Pd(II) precursors. The heptaarene framework involves one mesitylene, three phenol, and three pyridine moieties, which were connected by Suzuki coupling reactions. The treatment of the tridentates with Pd(dppp)(OTf)2 or Pd(en)(NO3)2 in a 2:3 molar ratio furnished coordination cages, which was ascertained by crystallography, 1H NMR and DOSY measurements, and ESI-TOFMS and UV-vis spectra. The cages have six phenolic hydroxy groups inside and were expected to incorporate hydrogen-bonding guest molecules such as saccharides. CD and DOSY measurements showed that octyl hexoside guests could be incorporated into the cage.

Abstract
Tight ligand-receptor binding, paradoxically, is a major root of drug resistance in cancer chemotherapy. To address this problem, instead of using conventional inhibitors or ligands, this paper focuses on the development of a novel process-enzyme-instructed self-assembly (EISA)-to kill cancer cells selectively. Here it is demonstrated that EISA as an intracellular process to generate nanofibrils of short peptides for selectively inhibiting cancer cell proliferation, including drug resistant ones. As the process that turns the non-self-assembling precursors into the self-assembling peptides upon the catalysis of carboxylesterases (CES), EISA occurs intracellularly to selectively inhibit a range of cancer cells that exhibit relatively high CES activities. More importantly, EISA inhibits drug resistant cancer cells (e.g., triple negative breast cancer cells (HCC1937) and platinum-resistant ovarian cells (SKOV3, A2780cis)). With the IC50 values of 28-80 and 25-44 µg mL-1 of l- and d-dipeptide precursors against cancer cells, respectively, EISA is innocuous to normal cells. Moreover, using coculture of cancer and normal cells, the selectivity of EISA is validated against cancer cells. Besides revealing that intracellular EISA cause apoptosis or necroptosis to kill the cancer cells, this work illustrates a new approach to amplify the enzymatic difference between cancer and normal cells and to expand the pool of drug candidates for potentially overcoming drug resistance in cancer therapy.

Abstract
Anticancer drug resistance demands innovative approaches that boost the activity of drugs against drug-resistant cancers without increasing the systemic toxicity. Here we show the use of enzyme-instructed self-assembly (EISA) to generate intracellular supramolecular assemblies that drastically boost the activity of cisplatin against drug-resistant ovarian cancer cells. We design and synthesize small peptide precursors as the substrates of carboxylesterase (CES). CES cleaves the ester bond pre-installed on the precursors to form the peptides that self-assemble in water to form nanofibers. At the optimal concentrations, the precursors themselves are innocuous to cells, but they double or triple the activity of cisplatin against the drug-resistant ovarian cancer cells. This work illustrates a simple, yet fundamental, new way to introduce non-cytotoxic components into combination therapies with cisplatin without increasing the systemic burden or side effects.

Abstract
Nitroxide free radicals have been used to study the inner space of one of Rebek's water-soluble capsules. EPR and (1) H NMR spectroscopy, ESI-MS, and DFT calculations showed a preference for the formation of 1:2 complexes. EPR titrations allowed us to determine binding constants (Ka ) in the order of 10(7) M(-2) . EPR spectral-shape analysis provided information on the guest rotational dynamics within the capsule. The interplay between optimum hydrogen bonding upon capsule formation and steric strain for guest accommodation highlights some degree of flexibility for guest inclusion, particularly at the center of the capsule where the hydrogen bond seam can be barely distorted or slightly disturbed.

Abstract
To expand the interface between self-assembled metal-ligand and hydrogen-bonded architectures, here we report the preparation, self-assembly, and metal-ligand binding of a pyridyl quinolone ligand (5-PYQ). The 5-PYQ ligand self-associates through quinolone hydrogen bonding, and it binds to metal centers through the pyridine ligand component. As a first step toward investigating more-complex hybrid metal-ligand hydrogen-bonded (MLHB) architectures, we report investigations of 5-PYQ with mono- and bis-platinated anthracene precursors. These results demonstrate that the 5-PYQ ligand maintains hydrogen bonding interactions while binding to square-planar platinum centers, but that generation of coordination compounds with closed topology erodes the hydrogen bonding fidelity to favor ambidentate coordination modes of the 5-PYQ ligand.

Abstract
A new chromogenic, self-assembled molecular capsule G@22is developed by introducing four (N,N-dimethyl-4-aminophenyl) azobenzyl moieties on the upper rim of a resorcin[4]arene-based amidoimino-cavitand. The tuning of conjugation between amido and (N,N-dimethyl-4-aminophenyl)azobenzyl groups by acid–base titration allows naked-eye observation of molecular capsule formation.

Abstract
To design and exploit novel macrocyclic synthetic receptors is a permanent and challenging topic in supramolecular chemistry. Here we describe the one-pot synthesis, unique geometries and intriguing host-guest properties of a new class of supramolecular macrocycles - biphen[n]arenes (n = 3, 4), which are made up of 4,4'-biphenol or 4,4'-biphenol ether units linked by methylene bridges at the 3- and 3'- positions. The biphenarene macrocycles are conveniently accessible/modifiable and extremely guest-friendly. Particularly, biphen[4]arene is capable of forming inclusion complexes with not only organic cationic guests but also neutral π-electron deficient molecules. Compared with calixarenes, resorcinarenes, cyclotriveratrylenes and pillararenes with substituted mono-benzene units, the biphen[n]arenes reported here possess significantly different characteristics in both their topologic structures and their recognition properties, and thus can find broad applications in supramolecular chemistry and other areas.

Abstract
A terpyridine-based, concentration-dependent, facile self-assembly process is reported, resulting in two three-dimensional metallosupramolecular architectures, a bis-rhombus and a tetrahedron, which are formed using a two-dimensional, planar, tris-terpyridine ligand. The interconversion between these two structures is concentration-dependent: at a concentration higher than 12 mg mL(-1), only a bis-rhombus, composed of eight ligands and 12 Cd(2+) ions, is formed; whereas a self-assembled tetrahedron, composed of four ligands and six Cd(2+) ions, appears upon sufficient dilution of the tris-terpyridine-metal solution. At concentrations less than 0.5 mg mL(-1), only the tetrahedron possessing an S4 symmetry axis is detected; upon attempted isolation, it quantitatively reverts to the bis-rhombus. This observation opens an unexpected door to unusual chemical pathways under high dilution conditions.

Abstract
Using a series of tritopic 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (tpy) ligands constructed on adamantane, three discrete 3D metallo-supramolecular architectures were assembled, i.e., trigonal bipyramidal, tetrahedron, and cube. The self-assembly used tritopic ligands as corner directing units and metal ions as glue units at the edge. The angles of the linkers between adamantane and tpy head play a critical role in guiding the assembled structures, which have the general formula of M3nL2n, where M denotes metal ion and L denotes ligand. All complexes were fully characterized by (1)H, (13)C NMR, diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy, ESI-MS, and traveling-wave ion mobility-mass spectrometry. The binary mixtures of LA and LC or LB and LC underwent a self-sorting process that led to the self-assembly of discrete 3D structures. The self-sorting behavior is solely based on the angles precoded within the arm of tritopic ligands. Moreover, kinetic study of preassembled cube and tetrahedron demonstrated a slow ligand exchange process toward a statistical mixture of hetero tetrahedrons with LA and LB.
