Efficient Synthesis of Single Gold Nanoparticle Hybrid Amphiphilic Triblock Copolymers and Their Controlled Self-Assembly

Single Pulse Nanosecond Laser-Stimulated Targeted Delivery of Anti-Cancer Drugs from Hybrid Lipid Nanoparticles Containing 5 nm Gold Nanoparticles

Encapsulating chemotherapeutic drugs like doxorubicin (DOX) inside lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) can overcome their acute, systematic toxicity. However, a precise drug release at the tumor microenvironment for improving the maximum tolerated dose and reducing side effects has yet to be well-established by implementing a safe stimuli-responsive strategy. This study proposes an integrated nanoscale perforation to trigger DOX release from hybrid plasmonic multilamellar LNPs composed of 5 nm gold (Au) NPs clustered at the internal lamellae interfaces. To promote site-specific DOX release, a single pulse irradiation strategy is developed by taking advantage of the resonant interaction between nanosecond pulsed laser radiation (527 nm) and the plasmon mode of the hybrid nanocarriers. This approach enlarges the amount of DOX in the target cells up to 11-fold compared to conventional DOX-loaded LNPs, leading to significant cancer cell death. The simulation of the pulsed laser interactions of the hybrid nanocarriers suggests a release mechanism mediated by either explosive vaporization of thin water layers adjacent to AuNP clusters or thermo-mechanical decomposition of overheated lipid layers. This simulation indicates an intact DOX integrity following irradiation since the temperature distribution is highly localized around AuNP clusters and highlights a controlled light-triggered drug delivery system.

Hybrid Polymer Vesicles: Controllable Preparation and Potential Applications

Hybrid polymer vesicles contain functional nanoparticles (NPs) in their walls, interfaces, coronae, or cavities. NPs render the hybrid vesicles with specific physical properties, while polymers endow them with structural stability and may significantly reduce the high toxicity of NPs. Therefore, hybrid vesicles integrate fascinating multifunctions from both NPs and polymeric vesicles, which have gained tremendous attention because of their diverse promising applications. Various types of delicate hybrid polymeric vesicles with size control and tunable localization of NPs in different parts of vesicles have been constructed via in situ and ex situ strategies, respectively. Their potential applications have been widely explored, as well. This review presents the progress of block copolymer (BCP) vesicle systems containing different types of NPs including metal NPs, magnetic NPs, and semiconducting quantum dots (QDs), etc. The strategies for controlling the location of NPs within hybrid vesicles are discussed. Typical potential applications of the elegant hybrid vesicles are also highlighted.

Supramolecular structures from structurally persistent and surface active carbon dots in water

Carbon dots (CDs) have developed into an important class of nanomaterials that have attracted increasing attention during the past decades. Despite numerous types of CDs reported to date, research on their self-assembly is still limited. Herein, we report for the first time the self-assembly of CDs in water, which show concentration-dependent aggregation behavior. The CDs used have a structural motif of a fully carbonized core surrounded by a highly condensed, polymeric network, to which triethylene glycol monomethyl ether (TGME) chains are grafted. When dissolved in water, they show a low critical aggregation concentration (cac) of 0.07 mg mL^-1 with the lowest surface tension of ∼37 mN m^-1. Above this cac, nanoclusters and vesicles are observed at relatively low and high concentrations, respectively. At an intermediate concentration, polymorphism is noticed where nanotubes coexist with nanorods. At an elevated temperature, the CDs become more hydrophobic due to the dehydration of peripheral TGME, which decreases the cac and triggers phase transfer from water to toluene. These surface active CDs were used to disperse and stabilize multi-walled carbon nanotubes in water, which showed much better performance than that of both traditional ionic and nonionic surfactants. Our work indicates that with a careful structural design, CDs can be developed into a new type of amphiphiles with properties superior to those of traditional surfactants in specific aspects.

Modulating luminescence and assembled shapes of ultrasmall Au nanoparticles towards hierarchical information encryption

Because of their intriguing luminescence performances, ultrasmall Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) and their assemblies hold great potential in diverse applications, including information security. However, modulating luminescence and assembled shapes of ultrasmall AuNPs to achieve a high-security level of stored information is an enduring and significant challenge. Herein, we report a facile strategy using Pluronic F127 as an adaptive template for preparing Au nanoassemblies (AuNAs) with controllable structures and tunable luminescence to realize hierarchical information encryption through modulating excitation light. The template guided ultrasmall AuNP in situ growth in the inner core and assembled these ultrasmall AuNPs into intriguing necklace-like or spherical nanoarchitectures. By regulating the type of ligand and reductant, their emission was also tunable, ranging from green to the second near-infrared (NIR-II) region. The excitation-dependent emission could be shifted from red to NIR-II, and this significant shift was considerably distinct from the small range variation of conventional nanomaterials in the visible region. In virtue of tunable luminescence and controllable structures, we expanded their potential utility to hierarchical information encryption, and the true information could be decrypted in a two-step sequential manner by regulating excitation light. These findings provided a novel pathway for creating uniform nanomaterials with desired functions for potential applications in information security.

Ultrasmall Luminescent Metal Nanoparticles: Surface Engineering Strategies for Biological Targeting and Imaging

In the past decade, ultrasmall luminescent metal nanoparticles (ULMNPs, d < 3 nm) have achieved rapid progress in addressing many challenges in the healthcare field because of their excellent physicochemical properties and biological behaviors. With the sharp shrinking size of large plasmonic metal nanoparticles (PMNPs), the contributions from the surface characteristics increase significantly, which brings both opportunities and challenges in the application-driven surface engineering of ULMNPs toward advanced biological applications. Here, the systematic advancements in the biological applications of ULMNPs from bioimaging to theranostics are summarized with emphasis on the versatile surface engineering strategies in the regulation of biological targeting and imaging performance. The efforts in the surface functionalization strategies of ULMNPs for enhanced disease targeting abilities are first discussed. Thereafter, self-assembly strategies of ULMNPs for fabricating multifunctional nanostructures for multimodal imaging and nanomedicine are discussed. Further, surface engineering strategies of ratiometric ULMNPs to enhance the imaging stability to address the imaging challenges in complicated bioenvironments are summarized. Finally, the phototoxicity of ULMNPs and future perspectives are also reviewed, which are expected to provide a fundamental understanding of the physicochemical properties and biological behaviors of ULMNPs to accelerate their future clinical applications in healthcare.

Self-Assembled Polymeric Materials: Design, Morphology, and Functional-Oriented Applications

This Review focuses on the current research advances of the synthesis of various amphiphilic block copolymers (ABCs), such as conventional ABCs and newly-presented polyprodrug amphiphiles (PPAs), and the development of corresponding self-assemblies in selective solvents driven by the intermolecular interactions, like noncovalent hydrophobic interactions, π-π interactions, and hydrogen bonds, between ABCs or preformed small polymeric nanoparticles. The design of these assemblies is systematically introduced, and the diverse examples concerning the unique assembly structures along with the fast development of their exclusive properties and various applications in different fields were discussed. Possible perspectives on the existential challenges and glorious future were elucidated finally. We hope this review will provide a convenient way for readers to motivate more evolutional innovative concepts and methods to design next generation of novel polymeric nanoassemblies, and fill the gap between material design and practical applications. Effect of chemical design of grafted polymers on the self-assembled morphology of polymer-tethered nanoparticles in nanotubes

There is a clear relationship between the self-assembling architecture of nanoparticles (NPs) and their physical properties, and they are currently used in a variety of applications, including optical sensors. Polymer-tethered NPs, which are created by grafting polymers onto NPs to control the self-assembly of NPs, have attracted considerable attention. Recent synthetic techniques have made it possible to synthesize a wide variety of polymers and thereby create NPs with many types of surfaces. However, self-assembled structures have not been systematically classified because of the large number of tuning parameters such as the polymer length and graft density. In this study, by using coarse-grained molecular simulation, we investigated the changes in the self-assembled structure of polymer-tethered NP solutions confined in nanotubes due to the chemical properties of polymers. Three types of tethered polymer NP models were examined: homo hydrophilic, diblock hydrophilic-hydrophobic (HI-HO), and diblock hydrophobic-hydrophilic. Under strong confinement, the NPs were dispersed in single file at low axial pressure. As the pressure increased, multilayered lamellar was observed in the HI-HO model. In contrast, under weak confinement, the difference in the pressure at which the phases emerge, depending on the model, was significant. By changing the chemical properties of the grafted polymer, the thermodynamic conditions (the axial pressure in this study) under which the phases appear is altered, although the coordination of NPs remains almost unchanged. Our simulation offers a theoretical guide for controlling the morphologies of self-assembled polymer-tethered NPs, a novel system that may find applications in nanooptical devices or for nanopatterning.

Ligand-regulated self-assembly of luminescent Au nanoparticles towards diverse controllable superstructures

Only using one type of amphiphilic block copolymers as a template, we present a facile and robust approach to in situ fabricate a series of brightly emitting Au nano-assemblies with high controllability and tunability. Simply by altering thiol ligands, the Au nano-assemblies display diverse superstructures including fibers, vesicles, and honeycombs.

Polymer-Ligated Nanocrystals Enabled by Nonlinear Block Copolymer Nanoreactors: Synthesis, Properties, and Applications

The past several decades have witnessed substantial advances in synthesis and self-assembly of inorganic nanocrystals (NCs) due largely to their size- and shape-dependent properties for use in optics, optoelectronics, catalysis, energy conversion and storage, nanotechnology, and biomedical applications. Among various routes to NCs, the nonlinear block copolymer (BCP) nanoreactor technique has recently emerged as a general yet robust strategy for crafting a rich diversity of NCs of interest with precisely controlled dimensions, compositions, architectures, and surface chemistry. It is notable that nonlinear BCPs are unimolecular micelles, where each block copolymer arm of nonlinear BCP is covalently connected to a central core or polymer backbone. As such, their structures are static and stable, representing a class of functional polymers with complex architecture for directing the synthesis of NCs. In this review, recent progress in synthesizing NCs by capitalizing on two sets of nonlinear BCPs as nanoreactors are discussed. They are star-shaped BCPs for producing 0D spherical nanoparticles, including plain, hollow, and core-shell nanoparticles, and bottlebrush-like BCPs for creating 1D plain and core/shell nanorods (and nanowires) as well as nanotubes. As the surface of these NCs is intimately tethered with the outer blocks of nonlinear BCPs used, they can thus be regarded as polymer-ligated NCs (i.e., hairy NCs). First, the rational design and synthesis of nonlinear BCPs via controlled/living radical polymerizations is introduced. Subsequently, their use as the NC-directing nanoreactors to yield monodisperse nanoparticles and nanorods with judiciously engineered dimensions, compositions, and surface chemistry is examined. Afterward, the intriguing properties of such polymer-ligated NCs, which are found to depend sensitively on their sizes, architectures, and functionalities of surface polymer hairs, are highlighted. Some practical applications of these polymer-ligated NCs for energy conversion and storage and drug delivery are then discussed. Finally, challenges and opportunities in this rapidly evolving field are presented.

Photopatternable, Branched Polymer Hydrogels Based on Linear Macromonomers for 3D Cell Culture Applications

Photochemical ligation strategies in hydrogel materials are crucial to model spatiotemporal phenomena that occur in the natural extracellular matrix. We here describe the use of cyclic 1,2-dithiolanes to cross-link with norbornene on linear poly(ethylene glycol) polymers through UV irradiation in a rapid and byproduct-free manner, resulting in branched macromolecular architectures and hydrogel materials from low-viscosity precursor solutions. Oscillatory rheology and NMR data indicate the one-pot formation of thioether and disulfide cross-links. Spatial and temporal control of the hydrogel mechanical properties and functionality was demonstrated by oscillatory rheology and confocal microscopy. A cytocompatible response of NIH 3T3 fibroblasts was observed within these materials, providing a foothold for further exploration of this photoactive cross-linking moiety in the biomedical field.

Polymer-guided assembly of inorganic nanoparticles

The self-assembly of inorganic nanoparticles is of great importance in realizing their enormous potentials for broad applications due to the advanced collective properties of nanoparticle ensembles. Various molecular ligands (e.g., small molecules, DNAs, proteins, and polymers) have been used to assist the organization of inorganic nanoparticles into functional structures at different hierarchical levels. Among others, polymers are particularly attractive for use in nanoparticle assembly, because of the complex architectures and rich functionalities of assembled structures enabled by polymers. Polymer-guided assembly of nanoparticles has emerged as a powerful route to fabricate functional materials with desired mechanical, optical, electronic or magnetic properties for a broad range of applications such as sensing, nanomedicine, catalysis, energy storage/conversion, data storage, electronics and photonics. In this review article, we summarize recent advances in the polymer-guided self-assembly of inorganic nanoparticles in both bulk thin films and solution, with an emphasis on the role of polymers in the assembly process and functions of resulting nanostructures. Precise control over the location/arrangement, interparticle interaction, and packing of inorganic nanoparticles at various scales are highlighted.

Electrochemical sensor for the discrimination of bilirubin in real human blood based on Au nanoparticles/ tetrathiafulvalene -carboxylate functionalized reduced graphene oxide 0D-2D heterojunction

In clinical practice, the excess concentration of bilirubin can trigger diseases such as neonatal jaundice, hepatic failure, septicemia, and so on. The concentration of bilirubin is one of important clinical indexes to evaluate patients with hepatic function disease in clinical practice. Therefore, it is very necessary to develop a rapid detection technique detecting the bilirubin in body fluids. Here, a new electrochemical sensor based on Au nanoparticles/tetrathiafulvalene-carboxylate functionalized reduced grapheneoxide 0D-2D heterojunction(AuNPs/TTF-COOH/RGO) was fabricated for the discrimination of bilirubin in real human blood. The TTF-COOH could effectively repair electron conductivity of RGO nanosheets, decrease interface resistance, and also enhance the dispersity of TTF-COOH/RGO nanosheets in water. What's more, the S atoms of TTF-COOH can bonding the gold nano-particles (AuNPs) to fabricate a 0D-2D heterojunction with excellent biocompatibility and enhanced specific surface area. After bilirubin oxidases were self-assembled on the surface of AuNPs, a specific recognition interface was formed as a sensor for the detection of bilirubin. The heterojunction showed enhanced interface electron transfer rate, excellent biocompatibility, and also prominent electrocatalytic activity for the high efficiency catalysis of bilirubin. The sensor shows a linear response for bilirubin from 2.66 to 83  μmol L^-1 and a low detection limit of 0.74 μmol L^-1 at 3σ. This work provides one novel approach to detection of bilirubin by functional RGO nanosheets, and broadens the application area of RGO nanosheets in selective catalysis and detection of biomolecule in biological specimens, such as blood, urine.

Architectural Design of Self-Assembled Hollow Superstructures

Colloidal nanoparticle assemblies are widely designed and fabricated via various building blocks to enhance their intrinsic properties and potential applications. Self-assembled hollow superstructures have been a focal point in nanotechnology for several decades and are likely to remain so for the foreseeable future. The novel properties of self-assembled hollow superstructures stem from their effective spatial utilization. As such, a comprehensive appreciation of the interactive forces at play among individual building blocks is a prerequisite for designing and managing the self-assembly process, toward the fabrication of optimal hollow nanoproducts. Herein, the emerging approaches to the fabrication of self-assembled hollow superstructures, including hard-templated, soft-templated, self-templated, and template-free methods, are classified and discussed. The corresponding reinforcement mechanisms, such as strong ligand interaction strategies and extra-capping strategies, are discussed in detail. Finally, possible future directions for the construction of multifunctional hollow superstructures with highly efficient catalytic reaction systems and an integration platform for bioapplications are discussed.

Plasmonic Au-Ag Janus Nanoparticle Engineered Ratiometric Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Aptasensor for Ochratoxin A Detection

Ochratoxin A (OTA), a toxic mycotoxin, poses severe risks to environment and human health. Herein, we develop a ratiometric surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) aptasensor based on internal standard (IS) methods for the sensitive and reproducible quantitative detection of OTA. Au-Ag Janus nanoparticles (NPs) are successfully synthesized under the guidance of 2-mercaptobenzoimidazole-5-carboxylic acid (MBIA), which possesses intrinsic Raman signals, thus no additional modification with a Raman reporter on NPs is required. In addition, Au-Ag Janus NPs exhibit amplified and stable SERS activity. MXenes nanosheets generate a unique and stable Raman signal, making them an ideal IS for quantitative Raman analysis. In principle, Au-Ag Janus NPs are assembled with MXenes nanosheets depending on hydrogen bond and the chelation interaction between MXenes nanosheets and OTA aptamers. In the presence of OTA, Au-Ag Janus NPs are dissociated from MXenes nanosheets due to the formation of aptamer/OTA complex, leading to the attenuation of Raman signal of Au-Ag Janus NPs, and meanwhile, the signal of MXenes nanosheets remain constant. Quantitatively, upon correction by the IS Raman signals, sensitive and quantitative detection can be achieved with the limit of detection (LOD) of 1.28 pM for OTA. Our results suggest that this ratiometric SERS aptasensor is a powerful tool which shows great promise for applications in complex systems.

Bottlebrush-Colloid Janus Nanoparticles

A bottlebrush-colloid Janus nanoparticle (JNP) with a ball-and-stick structure is reported. A single poly(4-vinyl benzyl chloride) (PVBC) polymer chain was grafted onto the amine-capped Fe₃O₄@NH₂ nanoparticle. pH-responsive 2-diethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA) and water-soluble oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (OEGMA) were sequentially grown from the PVBC backbone by ATRP, forming a core-shell bottlebrush. The synthesized PVBC₂₀₈-g-(PDEAEMA₁₃-b-POEGMA₈)-Fe₃O₄@NH₂ JNPs are dispersible in water and can be manipulated by a magnet. The Fe₃O₄ NPs with exposed -NH₂ groups facilitate accumulation at acidic sites. Hydrophobic dyes can be loaded within the PDEAEMA at pH ≥ 7.5, while they are released at pH values below 6.8. The composite JNPs are promising as a guided pH-responsive delivery vector toward acidic solid tumors.

Synthesis and controllable self-assembly of 3D amphiphilic organoplatinum(ii) metallacages in water

A 3D amphiphilic supramolecular coordination metallacycle M1 was designed and fabricated using a new method called “coordination driven self-assembly”. It can self-assemble into well-defined vesicles and further assemble into nanofibres and hybrid vesicles. Importantly, the hybrid vesicles can be applied in photocatalysis in water.

Interfacial self-assembly of gold nanoparticle-polymer nanoconjugates into microcapsules with near-infrared light modulated biphasic catalysis efficiency

Gold nanoparticle-based microcapsules based on the interfacial assembly significantly enhanced the biphasic catalytic reaction rate upon near-infrared light irradiation.

Self-Assembly of Polymer-Coated Plasmonic Nanocrystals: From Synthetic Approaches to Practical Applications

Self-assembly of plasmonic nanocrystals (PNCs) and polymers provides access to a variety of functionalized metallic-polymer building blocks and higher-order hybrid plasmonic assemblies, and thus is of considerable fundamental and practical interest. The hybrid assemblies often not only inherit individual characteristics of polymers and PNCs but also exhibit distinct photophysical and catalytic properties compared to that of a single PNC building block. The tailorable plasmonic coupling between PNCs within assemblies enables the precise control over localized surface plasmon resonance, which subsequently affords a series of light-driven or photo-activated applications, such as surface-enhanced Raman scattering detection, photoacoustic imaging, photothermal therapy, and photodynamic therapy. In this review, the synthetic strategies of a library of PNC-polymer hybrid building blocks and corresponding assemblies are summarized along with the mechanisms of polymer-assisted self-assembly of PNCs and the concepts for bridging the intrinsic properties of PNC-polymer assemblies to widespread practical applications.

Plasmonic vesicles with tailored collective properties

Plasmonic nanoparticle assemblies have been exhibiting unique collective properties absent in their individual counterparts. However, it is an important challenge to manipulate those properties due to the difficulty in controlling the arrangement and distance between plasmonic nanoparticles. Herein, we propose an alternative strategy for manipulating the distance between gold nanoparticles on the plasmonic vesicles to afford tunable collective properties by changing the temperature. To reach this goal, a thermally responsive vesicle is self-assembled from an azobenzene-terminated homopolymer, poly(2-(2-ethoxyethoxy)ethyl acrylate) (Azo-PEEA). Gold nanoparticles are then decorated on its membrane to afford plasmonic vesicles, which can be grouped and fused into larger plasmonic vesicles when heated. Consequently, the gold nanoparticles come closer, creating local hot spots in the gap between adjacent gold nanoparticles, leading to the red shift of local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peaks and better surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Besides, the structure and the collective optical properties of the plasmonic vesicles can be reserved under various conditions, e.g., different pH values, high salt concentration and relatively high temperature once they are heated up to 35 °C.

Crystallization-Driven Two-Dimensional Self-Assembly of Amphiphilic PCL-b-PEO Coated Gold Nanoparticles in Aqueous Solution

This Letter reports the first formation of free-standing plasmonic monolayer nanosheets by the self-assembly of AuNPs without assistance from a planar interface. The strategy involves the coating of poly(caprolactone)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PCL-b-PEO) diblock copolymers on AuNPs, followed by two-dimensional (2D) self-assembly of the resultant amphiphilic AuNPs in aqueous phase. The crystallization of the PCL blocks, affected by their grafting density and radius of gyration, drives the formation of the AuNP nanosheets, which undergoes a growth process of individual micelles to small nanosheets and eventually to large sheets. Due to the plasmonic coupling of AuNPs in close proximity, the AuNP nanosheets exhibit near-infrared (NIR) absorption with the maximum at about 700 nm. This study not only brings a new approach toward polymer-AuNP hybrid superstructures in solution, but also provides a new system for fundamental study on 2D self-assembly of AuNPs.

Emerging Applications of Fluorogenic and Non-fluorogenic Bifunctional Linkers

Homo- and hetero-bifunctional linkers play vital roles in constructing a variety of functional systems, ranging from protein bioconjugates with drugs and functional agents, to surface modification of nanoparticles and living cells, and to the cyclization/dimerization of synthetic polymers and biomolecules. Conventional approaches for assaying conjugation extents typically rely on ex situ techniques, such as mass spectrometry, gel electrophoresis, and size-exclusion chromatography. If the conjugation process involving bifunctional linkers was rendered fluorogenic, then in situ monitoring, quantification, and optical tracking/visualization of relevant processes would be achieved. In this review, conventional non-fluorogenic linkers are first discussed. Then the focus is on the evolution and emerging applications of fluorogenic bifunctional linkers, which are categorized into hetero-bifunctional single-caging fluorogenic linkers, homo-bifunctional double-caging fluorogenic linkers, and hetero-bifunctional double-caging fluorogenic linkers. In addition, stimuli-cleavable bifunctional linkers designed for both conjugation and subsequent site-specific triggered release are also summarized.

Photoluminescent and pH-responsive supramolecular structures from co-assembly of carbon quantum dots and zwitterionic surfactant micelles

Mixing negatively charged carbon quantum dots with a zwitterionic surfactant in water produces a variety of supramolecular structures, which are photoluminescent and show a reversible response to pH.

Surface Engineering of Spherical Metal Nanoparticles with Polymers toward Selective Asymmetric Synthesis of Nanobowls and Janus-Type Dimers

New synthetic methods capable of controlling structural and compositional complexities of asymmetric nanoparticles (NPs) are very challenging but highly desired. A simple and general synthetic approach to designing sophisticated asymmetric NPs by anisotropically patterning the surface of isotropic metallic NPs with amphiphilic block copolymers (BCPs) is reported. The selective galvanic replacement and seed-mediated growth of a second metal can be achieved on the exposed surface of metal NPs, resulting in the formation of nanobowls and Janus-type metal-metal dimers, respectively. Using Ag and Au NPs tethered with amphiphilic block copolymers of poly(ethylene oxide)-block-polystyrene (PEO-b-PS), anisotropic surface patterning of metallic NPs (e.g., Ag and Au) is shown to be driven by thermodynamical phase segregation of BCP ligands on isotropic metal NPs. Two proof-of-concept experiments are given on, i) synthesis of Au nanobowls by a selective galvanic replacement reaction on Janus-type patched Ag/polymer NPs; and ii) preparation of Au-Pd heterodimers and Au-Au homodimers by a seed-mediated growth on Janus-type patched Au/polymer NPs. The method shows remarkable versatility; and it can be easily handled in aqueous solution. This synthetic strategy stands out as the new methodology to design and synthesis asymmetric metal NPs with sophisticated topologies.

Multi-Dimensional Self-Assembly of a Dual-Responsive ABC Miktoarm Star Terpolymer

This letter reports the first 2D self-assembly of ABC miktoarm star terpolymers based on dual-responsive polycaprolactone-arm-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-arm-poly(2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (μ-CID), which self-assembled into multilayer nanosheets comprising polycaprolactone single crystals in tetrahydrofuran (THF)/methanol mixed solvents. Interestingly, the nanosheets showed pH-responsive morphological transitions in aqueous solutions, yielding multidimensional assemblies, including 2D hexagonal aggregates, patchy nanofibrils, and patchy vesicles, at different pH values. The nanosheets also exhibited thermoresponsive transition to spherical patchy micelles at a temperature above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) block. This study offers a novel system for fundamental study on the self-assembly of miktoarm star terpolymers.

Preparation of hyperstar polymers with encapsulated Au25(SR)18 clusters as recyclable catalysts for nitrophenol reduction

A robust approach is developed to prepare hyperstar polymer-Au₂₅(SR)₁₈ nanocomposites for catalysis. The synthesis started with atom transfer radical copolymerization of an inimer with a cyclic disulfide-containing methacrylate monomer in a microemulsion to produce hyperbranched copolymers with high molar mass, low polydispersity, and a vital fraction of dangling disulfide groups. The core-shell structured hyperstar polymers were then prepared using hyperbranched copolymers as macroinitiators to polymerize oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (M_n = 500) and grow the radiating arms. The hyperstar polymers with disulfide groups were proved to efficiently encapsulate Au₂₅(SR)₁₈ nanoclusters through ligand exchange without destroying the fine structure of the Au₂₅(SR)₁₈ clusters. The obtained hyperstar-Au₂₅(SR)₁₈ nanocomposites showed great stability with no size change after a three-month shelf storage. They were used as efficient catalysts for the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol by NaBH₄, showing convenient recovery and reuse without losing catalytic efficiency.

Anisotropic Self-Assembly of Hairy Inorganic Nanoparticles

Current interest in functional assemblies of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) stems from their collective properties and diverse applications ranging from nanomedicines to optically active metamaterials. Coating the surface of NPs with polymers allows for tailoring of the interactions between NPs to assemble them into hybrid nanocomposites with targeted architectures. This class of building blocks is termed "hairy" inorganic NPs (HINPs). Regiospecific attachment of polymers has been used to achieve directional interactions for HINP assembly. However, to date anisotropic surface functionalization of NPs still remains a challenge. This Account provides a review of the recent progress in the self-assembly of isotropically functionalized HINPs in both the condensed state and aqueous solution as well as the applications of assembled structures in such areas as biomedical imaging and therapy. It aims to provide fundamental mechanistic insights into the correlation between structural characteristics and self-assembly behaviors of HINPs, with an emphasis on HINPs made from NPs grafted with linear block copolymer (BCP) brushes. The key to the anisotropic self-assembly of these HINPs is the generation of directional interactions between HINPs by designing the surrounding medium (e.g., polymer matrix) or engineering the surface chemistry of the HINPs. First, HINPs can self-assemble into a variety of 1D, 2D, or 3D nanostructures with a nonisotropic local arrangement of NPs in films. Although a template is not always required, a polymer matrix (BCPs or supramolecules) can be used to assist the assembly of HINPs to form hybrid architectures. The interactions between brushes of neighboring HINPs or between HINPs and the polymer matrix can be modulated by varying the grafting density and length of one or multiple types of polymers on the surface of the NPs. Second, the rational design of deformable brushes of BCP or mixed homopolymer tethers on HINPs enables the anisotropic assembly of HINPs (in analogy to molecular self-assembly) into complex functional structures in selective solvents. It is evidenced that the directional interactions between BCP-grafted NPs arise from the redistribution and conformation change of the long, flexible polymer tethers, while the lateral phase separation of brushes on NP surfaces is responsible for the assembly of HINPs carrying binary immiscible homopolymers. For HINPs decorated with amphiphilic BCP brushes, their self-assembly can produce a variety of hybrid structures, such as vesicles with a monolayer of densely packed NPs in the membranes and with controlled sizes, shapes (e.g., spherical, hemispherical, disklike), and morphologies (e.g., patchy, Janus-like). This strategy allows fine-tuning of the NP organization and collective properties of HINP assemblies, thus facilitating their application in effective cancer imaging, therapy, and drug delivery. We expect that the design and assembly of such HINPs with isotropic functionalization is likely to open up new avenues for the fabrication of new functional nanocomposites and devices because of its simplicity, low cost, and ease of scale-up.

Morphological Evolution of Self-Assembled Structures Induced by the Molecular Architecture of Supra-Amphiphiles

A series of telechelic supramolecular amphiphiles [POSS-Azo₈@(β-CD-PDMAEMA)_1→8] was accomplished by orthogonally coupling the multiarm host polymer β-cyclodextrin-poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (β-CD-PDMAEMA) with an octatelechelic guest molecule azobenzene modified-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS-Azo₈) under different host-guest ratios. These telechelic supramolecular amphiphiles possess a rigid core and flexible corona. Increasing the multiarm host polymer coupled onto the rigid POSS core made the molecular architecture tend to be symmetrical and spherical. POSS-Azo₈@[β-CD-PDMAEMA]_1→8 could self-assemble into diverse morphologies evolving from spherical micelles, wormlike micelles, and branched aggregates to bowl-shaped vesicles. Distinct from the traditional linear amphiphilic polymers, we discovered that the self-assembly of POSS-Azo₈@[β-CD-PDMAEMA]_1→8 was dominantly regulated by their molecular architectures instead of hydrophilicity, which has also been verified using computer simulation results.
