Abstract
3,3'-Diselenodipropionic acid (DSePA), a selenocystine derivative, has been previously reported as an oral supplement for anticancer/radio-modulation activities. The present study is focused on devising a strategy to synthesize and characterize the deuterated derivative of DSePA and on understanding the effect of deuteration on its therapeutic index by comparing its cytotoxicity in cancerous versus non-cancerous cell types. In this context, the synthesis of 3,3'-diselenodipropionic acid-D8 (D-DSePA) was accomplished in ∼42% yield. Further, the results clearly established that the deuteration of DSePA significantly reduced its cytotoxicity in non-cancerous cell types while retaining its cytotoxicity in cancerous cell lines. Together, D-DSePA displayed a ∼5-fold higher therapeutic index than the non-deuterated derivative for anticancer activity. The biochemical and NMR studies confirmed that the better biocompatibility of D-DSePA than its non-deuterated derivative in non-cancerous cells was due to its ability to undergo slower redox reactions and to cause lesser inhibition of intracellular redox enzymes.

Abstract
The reaction of the Lewis base-stabilized phosphinoborane monomer tBuHPBH2 NMe3 (2 a) with catalytic amounts of bis(η5 :η1 -adamantylidenepentafulvene)titanium (1) provides a convenient new route to the polyphosphinoborane [tBuPH-BH2 ]n (3 a). This method offers access to high molar mass materials under mild conditions and with short reaction times (20 °C, 1 h in toluene). It represents an unprecedented example of a transition metal-mediated polymerization of a Lewis base-stabilized Group 13/15 compound. Preliminary studies of the substrate scope and a potential mechanism are reported.

Mechanism of Pd/Senphos-Catalyzed trans-Hydroboration of 1,3-Enynes: Experimental and Computational Evidence in Support of the Unusual Outer-Sphere Oxidative Addition Pathway. Abstract
The reaction mechanism of the Pd/Senphos-catalyzed trans-hydroboration reaction of 1,3-enynes was investigated using various experimental techniques, including deuterium and double crossover labeling experiments, X-ray crystallographic characterization of model reaction intermediates, and reaction progress kinetic analysis. Our experimental data are in support of an unusual outer-sphere oxidative addition mechanism where the catecholborane serves as a suitable electrophile to activate the Pd0-bound 1,3-enyne substrate to form a Pd-η3-π-allyl species, which has been determined to be the likely resting state of the catalytic cycle. Double crossover labeling of the catecholborane points toward a second role played by the borane as a hydride delivery shuttle. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the rate-limiting transition state of the reaction is the hydride abstraction by the catecholborane shuttle, which is consistent with the experimentally determined rate law: rate = k[enyne]0[borane]1[catalyst]1. The computed activation free energy ΔG‡ = 17.7 kcal/mol and KIE (kH/kD = 1.3) are also in line with experimental observations. Overall, this work experimentally establishes Lewis acids such as catecholborane as viable electrophilic activators to engage in an outer-sphere oxidative addition reaction and points toward this underutilized mechanism as a general approach to activate unsaturated substrates.

Abstract
An intramolecular phosphine-borane frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) chelate, iPr2P(C6H4)BCy2 or PB (Cy = cyclohexyl), was used to coordinate aminoborane (H2BNH2) and iminoborane (HBNH) units via donor-acceptor stabilization. Attempts to induce dehydrogenation from these B-N adducts with known metal catalysts (or pre-catalysts) have been unsuccessful thus far, and related observations were noted with an H2BNH2 complex supported by a modified FLP chelate bearing a geometrically constrained bicyclic 9-borabicyclo(3.3.1)nonane (BBN) unit. Treatment of the iminoborane adduct [PB{HBNH}] with a chlorinating agent led to ligand activation via B-C bond cleavage instead of the expected H/Cl exchange at boron to give [PB{ClBNH}]. Nucleophilic attack at the boron center in [PB{HBNH}] was observed upon addition of BnK (Bn = benzyl), yielding the amidoborate complex [PB{H(Bn)BNH}{K(THF)2}].

Abstract
A cationic terminal iminoborane [Mes*N

]]>
B ← IPr2Me2][AlBr4] (3+[AlBr4]−) (Mes* = 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl and IPr2Me2 = 1,3-diisopropyl-4,5-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene) has been synthesized and characterized. The employment of an aryl group and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand enables 3+[AlBr4]− to exhibit both B-centered Lewis acidity and BN multiple bond reactivities, thus allowing for the construction of tri-coordinate boron cations 5+–12+. More importantly, initial reactions involving coordination, addition, and [2 + 3] cycloadditions have been observed for the cationic iminoborane, demonstrating the potential to build numerous organoboron species via several synthetic routes. An NHC-stabilized aryliminoboryl cation exhibits both boron-centered Lewis acidity and multiple bond reactivity and could be utilized as an effective synthon for unusual cationic boron species.![]()

Abstract
![]()
As the world pledges
to significantly cut carbon emissions, the
demand for sustainable and clean energy has now become more important
than ever. This includes both production and storage of energy carriers,
a majority of which involve catalytic reactions. This article reviews
recent developments of homogeneous catalysts in emerging applications
of sustainable energy. The most important focus has been on hydrogen
storage as several efficient homogeneous catalysts have been reported
recently for (de)hydrogenative transformations promising to the hydrogen
economy. Another direction that has been extensively covered in this
review is that of the methanol economy. Homogeneous catalysts investigated
for the production of methanol from CO2, CO, and HCOOH
have been discussed in detail. Moreover, catalytic processes for the
production of conventional fuels (higher alkanes such as diesel, wax)
from biomass or lower alkanes have also been discussed. A section
has also been dedicated to the production of ethylene glycol from
CO and H2 using homogeneous catalysts. Well-defined transition
metal complexes, in particular, pincer complexes, have been discussed
in more detail due to their high activity and well-studied mechanisms.

Abstract
Transfer hydrogenation (TH) has historically been dominated by Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) reactions. However, with growing interest in amine-boranes, not least ammonia-borane (H3 N⋅BH3 ), as potential hydrogen storage materials, these compounds have also started to emerge as an alternative reagent in TH reactions. In this Review we discuss TH chemistry using H3 N⋅BH3 and their analogues (amine-boranes and metal amidoboranes) as sacrificial hydrogen donors. Three distinct pathways were considered: 1) classical TH, 2) nonclassical TH, and 3) hydrogenation. Simple experimental mechanistic probes can be employed to distinguish which pathway is operating and computational analysis can corroborate or discount mechanisms. We find that the pathway in operation can be perturbed by changing the temperature, solvent, amine-borane, or even the substrate used in the system, and subsequently assignment of the mechanism can become nontrivial.

Abstract
The reaction between basic [(PCP)Pd(H)] (PCP = 2,6-(CH2P(t-C4H9)2)2C6H4) and acidic [LWH(CO)3] (L = Cp (1a), Tp (1b); Cp = η5-cyclopentadienyl, Tp = κ3-hydridotris(pyrazolyl)borate) leads to the formation of bimolecular complexes [LW(CO)2(μ-CO)⋯Pd(PCP)] (4a, 4b), which catalyze amine-borane (Me2NHBH3, t BuNH2BH3) dehydrogenation. The combination of variable-temperature (1H, 31P{1H}, 11B NMR and IR) spectroscopies and computational (ωB97XD/def2-TZVP) studies reveal the formation of an η1-borane complex [(PCP)Pd(Me2NHBH3)]+[LW(CO3)]- (5) in the first step, where a BH bond strongly binds palladium and an amine group is hydrogen-bonded to tungsten. The subsequent intracomplex proton transfer is the rate-determining step, followed by an almost barrierless hydride transfer. Bimetallic species 4 are easily regenerated through hydrogen evolution in the reaction between two hydrides.

Abstract
We report on the first isolation and structural characterization of an iron phosphinoimino-borane complex Cp*Fe(η2-H2B
Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019
]]>
NC6H4PPh2) by dehydrogenation of iron amido-borane precursor Cp*Fe(η1-H3B–NHC6H4PPh2). Significantly, regeneration of the amido-borane complex has been realized by protonation of the iron(ii) imino-borane to the amino-borane intermediate [Cp*Fe(η2-H2B–NHC6H4PPh2)]+ followed by hydride transfer. These new iron species are efficient catalysts for 1,2-selective transfer hydrogenation of quinolines with ammonia borane. Dehydrogenation of an amido-borane iron complex provides an imino-borane complex. Regeneration of the amido-borane precursor was achieved by protonation of the imino-borane followed by hydride transfer to the amino-borane intermediate.![]()

Abstract
Amine-boranes have gained a lot of attention due to their potential as hydrogen storage materials and their capacity to act as precursors for transfer hydrogenation. Therefore, a lot of effort has gone into the development of suitable transition- and main-group metal catalysts for the dehydrogenation of amine-boranes. During the past decade, new systems started to emerge solely based on p-block elements that promote the dehydrogenation of amine-boranes through hydrogen-transfer reactions, polymerization initiation, and main-group catalysis. In this review, we highlight the development of these p-block based systems for stoichiometric and catalytic amine-borane dehydrogenation and discuss the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
The dehydropolymerization of amine-boranes, exemplified as H2 RB⋅NR'H2 , to produce polyaminoboranes (HRBNR'H)n that are inorganic analogues of polyolefins with alternating main-chain B-N units, is an area with significant potential, stemming from both fundamental (mechanism, catalyst development, main-group hetero-cross-coupling) and technological (new polymeric materials) opportunities. This Concept article outlines recent advances in the field, covering catalyst development and performance, current mechanistic models, and alternative non-catalytic routes for polymer production. The substrate scope, polymer properties and applications of these exciting materials are also outlined. Challenges and opportunities in the field are suggested, as a way of providing focus for future investigations.

Abstract
Ammonia borane (AB) has been in the spotlight for the chemical storage of hydrogen over the past decade. However, the development of methods for efficient and controlled hydrogen release from AB under mild conditions is still underway. Herein, using density functional theory (DFT) computations, we designed a metal-free frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) catalyst o-(BPh2 )C6 H4 (NiPr2 ) (M1) that can efficiently dehydrogenate AB to release more than two equivalents of H2 under mild conditions. Catalyst M1 can dehydrogenate not only AB to H2 N=BH2 (AOB) and H2 , but also oligomers of AOB with rather low free-energy barriers. The high dehydrogenation activity of M1 is the key of new oligomerization routes to the efficient dehydrogenation of AB to borazine (BZ) or H2 B-(NH=BH)n -NH2 (PIB) and finally to polyborazylene (PBZ) so that more than two equivalents of H2 can be released. A first-principle kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) study reveals that the activity of our catalytic system can be tuned by varying the initial concentration of M1 and AB. This work can guide the design of catalyst for the highly efficient utilization of AB as a hydrogen storage material.

Abstract
Mechanochemistry enabled the selective synthesis of the recherché orange polymorph of Wilkinson's catalyst [RhCl(PPh3)3]. The mechanochemically prepared Rh-complex catalysed the solvent-free dehydrogenation of Me2NH·BH3 in a ball mill. The in situ-generated hydrogen (H2) could be utilised for Rh-catalysed hydrogenation reactions by ball milling.

Abstract
Precatalysts active for the dehydropolymerisation of primary amine-boranes are generally based on mid or late transition metal. We have found that the activity of the precatalyst system formed from CpR2TiCl2 and 2nBuLi towards the dehydrogenation of the secondary amine-borane Me2NH·BH3, to yield the cyclic diborazane [Me2N-BH2]2, increases dramatically with increasing electron-donating character of the cyclopentadienyl rings (CpR). Application of the most active precatalyst system (CpR = η-C5Me5) to the primary amine-borane MeNH2·BH3 enabled the first synthesis of high molar mass poly(N-methylaminoborane), [MeNH-BH2] n , the BN analogue of polypropylene, by an early transition metal such as catalyst. Significantly, unlike other dehydropolymerization precatalysts for MeNH2·BH3 such as [Ir(POCOP)H2], skeletal nickel, and [Rh(COD)Cl]2, the Ti precatalyst system was also active towards a range of substrates including BzNH2·BH3 (Bz = benzyl) yielding high molar mass polymer. Moreover, in contrast to the late transition metal catalysed dehydropolymerisation of MeNH2·BH3 and also the Ziegler-Natta polymerisation of olefins, studies indicate that the Ti-catalyzed dehydropolymerization reactions proceed by a step-growth rather than a chain-growth mechanism.

Abstract
An unusual pericyclic process that involves the intermolecular transfer of thiozone (S3 ) is computationally described. The process can be considered as a special case of double group transfer reaction whereby the two migrating groups are connected to the same substituent, taking place in a concerted manner via transition states featuring two five-membered C2 S3 rings fused together. Analysis of the aromaticity at the TS geometries by computing NICS values at the (3,+1) RCPS as well as ACID calculations confirms the aromatic character of each C2 S3 ring, thus resulting in bicyclically delocalized aromatic structures. The free energy barriers for the transfer of S3 are relatively similar (40-50 kcal mol-1 ) to those computed for typical double H group transfer reactions. The similarities and differences between these processes have been further analysed by applying ASM-EDA and NBO approaches to the model reactions between ethene and ethane, and ethene and 1,2,3-trithiolane. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
A donor-acceptor complex of HBNH was prepared via thermolysis of a carbene-stabilized azidoborane. The reactivity of the fundamentally important HBNH unit (inorganic alkyne analogue) was explored in detail, including attempts to convert this species and related hydrido(azido)borane cations into molecular complexes of BN. This work provides added impetus for the development of molecular precursors that can release bulk boron nitride (a desirable insulator and thermal conductor) under mild conditions, and from solution.

Abstract
The present work reports a combined experimental/computational study of the Lewis acid promoted hydroxyalkylation reaction involving aldehyde and arene/heteroarene and reveals a mechanism in which the rate determining aldehyde to alcohol formation via a four-member cyclic transition state (TS) involves a transfer of hydrogen from arene/heteroarene C-H to aldehyde oxygen with the breaking of the C-H bond and formation of C-C and O-H bonds. The effect of different Sn(iv) derivatives on the hydroxyalkylation reaction from different in situ NMR and computational studies reveals that although the exergonic formation of the intermediate and its gained electrophilicity at the carbonyl carbon drive the reaction in SnCl4 compared to other Sn(iv) derivatives, the overall reaction is low yielding because of its stable intermediate. With respect to different aldehydes, LA promoted hydroxylation was found to be more feasible for an electron withdrawing aldehyde compared to electron rich aldehyde because of lower stability, enhanced electrophilicity gained at the aldehyde center, and a lower activation barrier between its intermediate and TS in the former as compared to the latter. The relative stability of the LA-aldehyde adduct decreases in the order SnCl4 > AlCl3 > InCl3 > BF3 > ZnCl2 > TiCl4 > SiCl4, while the activation barrier (ΔG(#)) between intermediate and transition states increases in the order AlCl3 < SnCl4 < InCl3 < BF3 < TiCl4 < ZnCl2 < SiCl4. On the other hand, the activation barriers in the case of different arenes/heteroarenes are in the order of indole < furan < anisole < thiophene < toluene < benzene < chlorobenzene < cyanobenzene, which suggests a facile reaction in the case of indole and the most difficult reaction in the case of cyanobenzene. The ease of formation of the corresponding diaryl methyl carbocation from the alcohol-LA intermediate is responsible for the determination of the undesired product and is found to be more viable in the case of strong LAs like AlCl3, InCl3 and SnCl4 because they have negative free energy of formation (ΔG) for alcohol to the corresponding diaryl methyl carbocation.

Abstract
Using well calibrated DFT studies we predict that experimentally synthesized B24 N24 fullerene can serve as a potential reversible chemical hydrogen storage material with hydrogen-gas storage capacity up to 5.13 wt %. Our theoretical studies show that hydrogenation and dehydrogenation of the fullerene framework can be achieved at reasonable rates using existing metal-free hydrogenating agents and base metal-containing dehydrogenation catalysts.

Abstract
Despite the great potential of both π-conjugated organoboron polymers and BN-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in organic optoelectronics, our knowledge of conjugated polymers with B-N bonds in their main chain is currently scarce. Herein, the first examples of a new class of organic-inorganic hybrid polymers are presented, which consist of alternating NBN and para-phenylene units. Polycondensation with B-N bond formation provides facile access to soluble materials under mild conditions. The photophysical data for the polymer and molecular model systems of different chain lengths reveal a low extent of π-conjugation across the NBN units, which is supported by DFT calculations. The applicability of the new polymers as macromolecular polyligands is demonstrated by a cross-linking reaction with Zr(IV) .

Abstract
The catalytic dehydrogenation of ammonia- and amine-boranes by a dimethylxanthene-derived frustrated Lewis pair is described. Turnover is facilitated on a thermodynamic basis by the ready release of H2 from the weakly basic PPh2-containing system. In situ NMR studies and the isolation of intermediates from stoichiometric reactions support a mechanism initiated by B-H activation, followed by end-growth BN coupling involving the terminal NH bond of the bound BN fragment and a BH bond of the incoming borane monomer.

Abstract
The coordination chemistry of the 1,2-BN-cyclohexanes 2,2-R2 -1,2-B,N-C4 H10 (R2 =HH, MeH, Me2 ) with Ir and Rh metal fragments has been studied. This led to the solution (NMR spectroscopy) and solid-state (X-ray diffraction) characterization of [Ir(PCy3 )2 (H)2 (η(2) η(2) -H2 BNR2 C4 H8 )][BAr(F) 4 ] (NR2 =NH2 , NMeH) and [Rh(iPr2 PCH2 CH2 CH2 PiPr2 )(η(2) η(2) -H2 BNR2 C4 H8 )][BAr(F) 4 ] (NR2 =NH2 , NMeH, NMe2 ). For NR2 =NH2 subsequent metal-promoted, dehydrocoupling shows the eventual formation of the cyclic tricyclic borazine [BNC4 H8 ]3 , via amino-borane and, tentatively characterized using DFT/GIAO chemical shift calculations, cycloborazane intermediates. For NR2 =NMeH the final product is the cyclic amino-borane HBNMeC4 H8 . The mechanism of dehydrogenation of 2,2-H,Me-1,2-B,N-C4 H10 using the {Rh(iPr2 PCH2 CH2 CH2 PiPr2 )}(+) catalyst has been probed. Catalytic experiments indicate the rapid formation of a dimeric species, [Rh2 (iPr2 PCH2 CH2 CH2 PiPr2 )2 H5 ][BAr(F) 4 ]. Using the initial rate method starting from this dimer, a first-order relationship to [amine-borane], but half-order to [Rh] is established, which is suggested to be due to a rapid dimer-monomer equilibrium operating.
