Abstract
A divergent one-pot domino strategy for the synthesis of nickel(II) and copper(II) β-thiophene-fused 5,10,15,20-tetraarylporphyrins was developed through a thiol-Michael addition of thioglycolic/thiolactic acid to the corresponding 2-iminoporphyrins, formed in situ after the reaction of nickel(II) and copper(II) 2-formyl-5,10,15,20-tetraarylporphyrins with sterically hindered tert-butylamine in 1,2-dichloroethane at 80 °C. Interestingly, the reaction of 2-formylporphyrins with comparatively less sterically hindered primary amines and thioglycolic acid afforded a mixture of β-substituted porphyrinic thiazolidinones and β-thiophene-fused porphyrins. A similar one-pot thiol-Michael protocol was applied to construct a novel free-base thieno[2,3-b]-meso-tetrakis(4-methoxyphenyl)porphyrin, which underwent zinc insertion by using zinc acetate in a CHCl3-MeOH mixture and afforded zinc(II) β-thiophene-fused meso-tetrakis(4-methoxyphenyl)porphyrin in an appreciable isolated yield. On photophysical evaluation, these new porphyrins displayed a modest bathochromically shifted electronic absorption in contrast to meso-tetraarylporphyrin building blocks.

Abstract
A series of thiopyran-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been straightforwardly synthesized from 2,5-di(1-en-3-ynyl)thiophene-containing precursors via one-pot ring-expansion and 6-endo cyclization reactions. The reaction monitoring and the density function theoretical calculation suggest that the ring-expansion reaction occurs prior to 6-endo cyclization. Moreover, the absorption profiles of the thiopyran-fused PAHs suggest that the π-conjugation extension on the side of the cyclopentadiene ring in the cyclopenta[b]thiochromene core is predominant in prolonging the effective conjugation length, while the effect from extension on the other side is negligible. Furthermore, all of the thiopyran-fused PAHs exhibit halochromic properties. Upon the addition of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, fluorescence "off-on" switches can be found for these thiopyran-fused PAHs. Therefore, this work not only provides a new synthetic approach for one-pot ring-expansion and 6-endo cyclization reactions but also expands the diversity of thiopyran-fused PAHs.

Abstract
A new series of thieno nucleus embellished trinuclear (19, 20) and tetranuclear (21-24) nitrogen heteroaryl have been synthesized by the Suzuki cross-coupling reaction using bis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(II) dichloride. All the synthesized compounds were characterized by IR, 1 H-NMR, 13 CNMR and Mass spectral properties. In vitro antibacterial studies of the synthesized compound were conducted using broth microdilution assay employing Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains and half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50 ) was determined. The result showed that compound 20 possess best antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli with IC50 values of 60 μg mL-1 and 90 μg mL-1 . Further to determine the mode of antibacterial action, compounds 20 and 21 were examined for in vitro bacterial dehydrogenase inhibitory assay. To understand the binding affinity of the synthesized compounds, the docking study was performed in the bacterial dehydrogenase enzyme by AutoDock Vina software and structure was confirmed by Discovery Studio Visualizer. All the synthesized compounds were docked in a good manner within the active sites of the bacterial dehydrogenase enzyme and exhibited good binding energies.

Abstract
The 20π porphyrinoids are immediate higher homologues of 18π porphyrins and differ from porphyrins in aromaticity which in turn affects the structure, properties and chemical reactivities. Research over the years indicated that the 20π porphyrinoids can be stabilized as non-aromatic/anti-aromatic or Mobius aromatic macrocycles using different strategies such as core-modification of porphyrins, non-metal/metal complexation of porphyrins, peripheral modification of porphyrins and expanded porphyrinoids. The structural properties such as aromaticity of the macrocycle can be controlled by choosing the right synthetic strategy. This review will provide an overview of the development in the chemistry of 20π porphyrinoids giving emphasize on the synthesis, structure and electronic properties of these macrocycles which have huge potential for various applications.

Abstract
A 1,3-cycloaddition reaction of 2-(tert-butyl)-8H-isoquinolino[4,3,2-de]phenanthridin-9-ium chloride to NiII norcorrole in the presence of base is shown to produce a family of chiral derivatives of polycyclic system(s) fused with pyrrole subunit(s) of the macrocycle. Dehydrogenation of the cycloaddition products gave rise to dibenzoullazine ortho-fused antiaromatic porphyrinoids.

Abstract
The review is devoted to the C–H functionalization of porphyrins. Porphyrins exhibit the properties of organic semiconductors, light energy converters, chemical and electrochemical catalysts, and photocatalysts. The review describes the iridium- and palladium-catalyzed direct functionalization of porphyrins, with more attention given to the results obtained in our laboratory. The development and improvement of synthetic methods that do not require preliminary modification of the substrate with various functional groups are extremely important for the preparation of new organic materials based on porphyrins. This makes it possible to simplify the synthetic procedure, to make the synthesis more economical, environmentally safe, and simple to perform.

Abstract
The synthesis of efficient porphyrin-based photosensitizers with intense near-infrared (NIR) absorption is in high demand for photodynamic therapy (PDT) but remains a challenging task. Herein we show the construction of a type of isoquinoline-fused porphyrins 3 and 4 with an impressive NIR-absorbing capacity. In light of the extraordinary singlet oxygen generation capabilities of 3 upon NIR irradiation, the representative nanoparticles (3a-NPs) assembled show excellent tumoricidal behavior with good biocompatibility in the phototherapeutic window (650-850 nm).

Abstract
A Suzuki–Miyaura coupling reaction was performed to synthesize 5,15-meso-bis(2-chlorothiophen-3-yl)porphyrins in order to obtain a building block for further functional porphyrins. Photophysical and electrochemical properties were investigated to understand the effect of 2-chloro substituted thiophenes which are connected at their 3-position to the meso-position of the porphyrin. A computational calculation with counterpoise method was demonstrated to estimate the relative intermolecular interaction in order to compare solubility. Installed chloro atoms at the 2-position of thiophen-3-yl decreased in intermolecular interaction which caused an increase in solubility.

Abstract
We synthesized thiophene-fused porphyrin dimers as effective π-extended helical chromophores. The porphyrin dimers exhibit a red-shifted absorption with the edge extending up to 1100 nm, implying strong electronic communication over the two porphyrin moieties through the thiophene-fused structure. Importantly, their racemic inversion barriers can be modulated by the central metal ions.

Abstract
Abstract
Porphyrins or more broadly defined porphyrinoids are the structures where the extended π-cloud can be significantly modified by several factors. The broad range of introduced structural motifs has shown a possibility of modification of conjugation by a controlled synthetic approach, leading to expected optical or magnetic behaviour, and also by post-synthetic modifications (i.e. redox or protonation/deprotonation), Both approaches lead to noticeab changes in observed properties but also open a potential for further utilization. Thus, this already constituted big family of macrocyclic structures with specific highly extended π-delocalization shows a significant contribution in several fields from fundamental studies, leading to understanding behaviour of skeletons like that with a substantial influence on biological studies and material science. The presented material focuses on the most significant examples of modifications of porphyrinoids skeleton leading to drastic changes in optical response and magnetic properties. Through the presentation, the focus will be placed on the changes leading to the most red-shifted transition as the parameter indicating extending the π-delocalization. Significantly different magnetic character will be also discussed based on the switching between aromatic/antiaromatic character assigned to macrocyclic structures that will be included.

Abstract
Porphyrins with a fused five-membered ring, such as 7,8-dehydropurpurins, have appeared as an emerging class of unique porphyrinoids. Their altered absorption spectra, relatively short lifetimes of excited states, and small HOMO-LUMO gaps arise from the harmony of the antiaromatic 20π-circuit and the aromatic 18π-circuit. In this regard, the electronic properties of 7,8-dehydropurpurins are expected to be controlled by modulating the contribution of the antiaromatic π-circuit to the whole aromaticity. Here the comparison of pyrrole- and phosphole-fused 7,8-dehydropurpurins is reported in terms of their aromaticity and physicochemical properties. The spectroscopic investigation revealed the larger contribution of the antiaromatic 24π-circuit in pyrrole-fused 7,8-dehyrdopurpurins than in phosphole-fused 7,8-dehydropurpurins. The DFT calculations also supported the feasibility of tuning the aromaticity of 7,8-dehydropurpurins by heterole-fused structures. Thus, the introduction of heterole-fused structures into porphyrinoids is a universal strategy to get new insight into aromaticity and their intrinsic properties in cyclic π-conjugated molecules.

Abstract
Divergent synthesis of meso-N/O-heteroarene-fused (quinoidal) porphyrins was established via rhodium-catalyzed β-C–H activation/annulation of quinoidal porphyrins with alkynes.
Here we present a divergent synthesis of brand-new types of meso-N/O-heteroarene-fused (quinoidal) porphyrins through Rh-catalyzed β-C–H activation/annulation of 5,15-dioxoporphyrins and dioxime derivatives with alkynes, in which the synthetic disconnections are difficult to access through the commonly used intramolecular cyclization strategy. Using the O-methyl oxime as a traceless oxidizing directing group, the meso-N-embedded pyridine-fused anti-quinoidal porphyrin 3 and pyridinium-fused cation 4 are formed with controllable chemoselectivity and complete anti-selectivity. Replacing the exocyclic oxime with a carbonyl group delivers the pyran-fused porphyrin 5, achieving structural conversion from a quinoidal conformation to a stable porphyrin macrocycle. Further oxidation of the expanded dimer 5ea gives the oxonium 6, which exhibits intense near-infrared (NIR) Q-bands up to 1300 nm. Theoretical studies demonstrate that the incorporation of a heteroatom at the meso-position enables more effective π-extension, resulting in a 22π aromatic (vs. 18π aromatic) character of pyran-fused porphyrins (syn/anti-5aa). Compared with the commercially available methylene blue (MB), syn-5al exhibits a better ability (ΦΔ = 0.61) to sensitize singlet oxygen (1O2) when irradiated with a 680 nm laser beam, and has potential as a photodynamic therapy (PDT) photosensitizer in the body's therapeutic window (650–900 nm).

Abstract
A nickel-mediated tandem double cyclization of ethynylene-linked dibromodiporphyrins afforded highly reactive etheno-fused diporphyrins, which undergo a thermal [2+2] cycloaddition at the fused C-C double bond to afford the cyclobutane moiety in X-shaped cyclobutane-linked tetraporphyrins. During the reaction of a Zn(II) complex precursor, the initial double cyclization product was converted into the diketodiporphyrin, which exhibits red chemiluminescence under ambient conditions.

Abstract
We report herein NH tautomerism of a freebase derivative of a quadruply fused porphyrin (H2QFP-Mes, 3), which has one mesityl group at one of the β-positions of the nonfused pyrroles to lower the structural symmetry, allowing us to observe the NH tautomerism with 1H NMR spectroscopy. Compound 3 was revealed to have the two inner NH protons on the two nonfused pyrroles, and the NH tautomerism of 3 was evidenced by variable-temperature (VT) 1H NMR experiments in various deuterated solvents. The VT-NMR studies revealed that the activation barrier for the NH tautomerism of 3 was larger than that of tetraphenylporphyrin. The positive activation entropy (ΔS‡ = 89 J mol-1 K-1), determined for the NH tautomerism, can be explained by dissociation of the π-π stacked dimer structure of 3 in the ground state, as evidenced by the crystal structure and NMR measurements. On the basis of the kinetic studies and density functional theory calculations, the stability of intermediates in the NH tautomerism of 3 and the transition states have been discussed in detail.

Abstract
Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of heteroaryl polyhalides with aryl boronates are surveyed. Drawing on data from literature sources as well as bespoke searches of Pfizer's global chemistry RKB and CAS Scifinder® databases, the factors that determine the site-selectivity of these reactions are discussed with a view to rationalising the trends found.

Abstract
This review focuses on the postfunctionalization of porphyrins and related compounds through catalytic and stoichiometric organometallic methodologies. The employment of organometallic reactions has become common in porphyrin synthesis. Palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions are now standard techniques for constructing carbon-carbon bonds in porphyrin synthesis. In addition, iridium- or palladium-catalyzed direct C-H functionalization of porphyrins is emerging as an efficient way to install various substituents onto porphyrins. Furthermore, the copper-mediated Huisgen cycloaddition reaction has become a frequent strategy to incorporate porphyrin units into functional molecules. The use of these organometallic techniques, along with the traditional porphyrin synthesis, now allows chemists to construct a wide range of highly elaborated and complex porphyrin architectures.

Abstract
Oxidation of 10,15,20-triaryl Ni(ii)-porphyrins bearing an electron-withdrawing substituent at the 5-position with DDQ and FeCl3 gave 10,12- and 18,20-doubly phenylene-fused Ni(ii)-porphyrins regioselectively. A doubly phenylene-fused meso-chloro porphyrin thus prepared was reductively coupled to give a meso-meso linked dimer, which was further converted to a quadruply phenylene-fused meso-meso, β-β, β-β triply linked Zn(ii)-diporphyrin via inner-metal exchange followed by oxidation with DDQ and Sc(OTf)3. As compared to the usual meso-meso, β-β, β-β triply linked Zn(ii)-diporphyrin, this π-extended porphyrin dyad exhibits a smaller HOMO-LUMO gap and a larger two-photon absorption cross-section.
