Abstract
We have developed a catalytic protocol for Diels-Alder reaction using trialkylphosphonium oxoborates as oxyanion hole catalysts. The reaction can be operated under ambient conditions. Dienes could easily polymerize under acidic condition. Nonetheless, these acid-sensitive substrates are compatible with the catalytic protocol and the reaction scope covers a wide range of substrates.

Abstract
The use of trialkylphosphonium oxoborates (TOB) as catalysts is reported. The site-isolated borate counter anion in a TOB catalyst increases the availability of C(sp3)-H to interact with electron donor substrates. The catalytic protocol is applicable to a wide range of substrates in the acetalization reaction and provides excellent chemoselectivity in the acetalization over thioacetalization in the presence of alcohols and thiols, which is otherwise hard to achieve using typical acid catalysts. Experimental and computational studies revealed that the TOB catalysts have multiple preorganized C(sp3)-Hs that serve as a mimic of oxyanion holes, which can stabilize the oxyanion intermediates via multiple C(sp3)-H non-classical hydrogen bond interactions.

Abstract
Using cinchona alkaloid as the lead compound, twenty-four cinchona alkaloid sulfonate derivatives (1 a-l, 2 a-c, 3 a-c, 4 a-c, and 5 a-c) were designed and prepared by modifying their C9 position, and structurally confirmed by 1 H-NMR, 13 C-NMR, HR-MS and melting points. Moreover, the stereochemical configurations of compounds 1 f and 1 l were unambiguously confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Furthermore, we determined the anti-oomycete and anti-fungal activities of these target compounds against Phytophthora capsici and Fusarium graminearum in vitro. The results showed that two compounds 4 b and 4 c exhibited prominent anti-oomycete activity, and the median effective concentration (EC50 ) values of 4 b and 4 c against P. capsici were 22.55 and 16.32 mg/L, respectively. This study suggested that when the C9 position of cinchona alkaloid sulfonate derivatives is in the S configuration and the 6'-position methoxy group is not present, the anti-oomycete activity is superior. In addition, five compounds 1 e, 1 f, 1 k, 3 c and 4 c displayed significant anti-fungal activity, with EC50 values of 43.64, 45.07, 80.18, 48.58 and 41.88 mg/L against F. graminearum, respectively. This result indicates that only when a specific substituent is introduced into the structural framework of the target compound, the corresponding compound exhibits significant inhibitory activity against fungi.

Abstract
Axially chiral molecules bearing multiple stereogenic axes are of great importance in the field of organic chemistry. However, the efficient construction of atropisomers featuring two different types of stereogenic axes has rarely been explored. Herein, we report the novel atroposelective synthesis of configurationally stable axially chiral B,N-heterocycles. By using stepwise asymmetric allylic substitution-isomerization (AASI) strategy, diaxially chiral B,N-heterocycles bearing B-C and C-N axes that are related to the moieties of axially chiral enamines and arylborons were also obtained. In this case, all four stereoisomers of diaxially chiral B,N-heterocycles were stereodivergently afforded in high enantioselectivities. Density functional theory (DFT) studies demonstrated that the NH⋅⋅⋅π interactions played a unique role in the promotion of stereospecific isomerization, thereby leading to the highly efficient central-to-axial chirality transfer.

Abstract
We demonstrate herein the capacity of simple carboxylate salts – tetrametylammonium and tetramethylguanidinium pivalate – to act as catalysts in the isomerization of β,γ‐unsaturated thioesters to α,β‐unsaturated thioesters. The carboxylate catalysts gave reaction rates comparable to those obtained with DBU, but with fewer side reactions. The reaction exhibits a normal secondary kinetic isotope effect (k1H/k1D=1.065±0.026) with a β,γ‐deuterated substrate. Computational analysis of the mechanism provides a similar value (k1H/k1D=1.05) with a mechanism where γ‐reprotonation of the enolate intermediate is rate determining.

Abstract
Most ligands applied for asymmetric hydrogenation are synthesized via multistep reactions with expensive chemical reagents. Herein, a series of novel and easily accessed cinchona-alkaloid-based NNP ligands have been developed in two steps. By combining [Ir(COD)Cl]2, 39 ketones including aromatic, heteroaryl, and alkyl ketones have been hydrogenated, all affording valuable chiral alcohols with 96.0-99.9% ee. A plausible reaction mechanism was discussed by NMR, HRMS, and DFT, and an activating model involving trihydride was verified.

Abstract
Visible-light-induced deaminative alkylation of Katritzky salts with silyl enol ethers has been developed. The reaction can proceed efficiently through electron donor-acceptor complex formation, avoiding the use of precious metal complexes or synthetically elaborate organic dyes. A series of functionalized γ-ketoesters was successfully obtained with good functional group tolerance and compatibility under mild and straightforward conditions.

Abstract
α,β-Butenolides with ≥96% enantiomeric excess are synthesized from β,γ-butenolides via a novel Cu(I)-ligand cooperative catalysis. The reaction is enabled by a chiral biphenyl-2-ylphosphine ligand featuring a remote tertiary amino group. Density functional theory studies support the cooperation between the metal center and the ligand basic amino group during the initial soft deprotonation and the key asymmetric γ-protonation. Remarkably, other coinage metals, that is, Ag and Au, can readily assume the same role as Cu in this asymmetric isomerization chemistry.

Abstract
Axially chiral styrenes are of great interest since they may serve as a class of novel chiral ligands in asymmetric synthesis. However, only recently have strategies been developed for their enantioselective preparation. Thus, the development of novel and efficient methodologies is highly desirable. Herein, we reported the first tandem iridium catalysis as a general strategy for the synthesis of axially chiral styrenes enabled by Asymmetric Allylic Substitution-Isomerization (AASI) using cinnamyl carbonate analogues as electrophiles and naphthols as nucleophiles. In this approach, axially chiral styrenes were generated through two independent iridium-catalytic cycles: iridium-catalyzed asymmetric allylic substitution and in situ isomerization via stereospecific 1,3-hydride transfer catalyzed by the same iridium catalyst. Both experimental and computational studies demonstrated that the isomerization proceeded by iridium-catalyzed benzylic C-H bond oxidative addition, followed by terminal C-H reductive elimination. Amid the central-to-axial chirality transfer, the hydroxyl of naphthol plays a crucial role in ensuring the stereospecificity by coordinating with the Ir(I) center. The process accommodated broad functional group compatibility. The products were generated in excellent yields with excellent to high enantioselectivities, which could be transformed to various axially chiral molecules.

Abstract
Endeavor to discover biorational natural products-based insecticides, two series (27) of novel 9R/S-acyloxy derivatives of cinchonidine and cinchonine were prepared and assessed for their insecticidal activity against Mythimna separata in vivo by the leaf-dipping method at 1 mg/mL. Among all the compounds, especially derivatives 6l and 6o exhibited the best insecticidal activity with final mortality rates of 75.0% and 71.4%, respectively. Overall, a free 9-hydroxyl group is not a prerequisite for insecticidal activity and C9-substitution is well tolerated; the configuration of C8/9 position is important for insecticidal activity, and 9S-configuration is optimal; 6'-OCH3 moiety is not necessary, removal of it is also acceptable. Abstract
Axially chiral enamides bearing a N–C axis have been recently studied and were proposed to be valuable chiral building blocks, but a stereoselective synthesis has not been achieved. Here, we report the first enantioselective synthesis of axially chiral enamides via a highly efficient, catalytic approach. In this approach, C(sp2)–N bond formation is achieved through an iridium-catalyzed asymmetric allylation, and then in situ isomerization of the initial products through an organic base promoted 1,3-H transfer, leading to the enamide products with excellent central-to-axial transfer of chirality. Computational and experimental studies revealed that the 1,3-H transfer occurs via a stepwise deprotonation/re-protonation pathway with a chiral ion-pair intermediate. Hydrogen bonding interactions with the enamide carbonyl play a significant role in promoting both the reactivity and stereospecificity of the stepwise 1,3-H transfer. The mild and operationally simple formal N-vinylation reaction delivered a series of configurationally stable axially chiral enamides with good to excellent yields and enantioselectivities. Axially chiral enamides bearing a N–C axis have been recently studied and were proposed to be valuable chiral building blocks, but a stereoselective synthesis has not been achieved.![]()

Abstract
The conversion of biomass-based platform molecules into various high-value chemicals greatly promotes the utilization of renewable biomass resources. Herein, an example of Rh-catalyzed β-arylation of levulinic-acid-derived α-angelica lactone was reported, providing the γ-lactone-structure products with high regioselectivity. Both arylboronic and alkenylboronic acids could be applied in this transformation. This reaction tolerated a variety of synthetically important functional groups. Moreover, the obtained γ-lactone products could be readily converted to high-value products such as 1,4-diols and γ-methoxy-carboxylates.

Abstract
The enantioselective ketimine-ene reaction is one of the most challenging stereocontrolled reaction types in organic synthesis. In this work, catalytic enantioselective ketimine-ene reactions of 2-aryl-3H-indol-3-ones with α-methylstyrenes were achieved by utilizing a B(C6 F5 )3 /chiral phosphoric acid (CPA) catalyst. These ketimine-ene reactions proceed well with low catalyst loading (B(C6 F5 )3 /CPA=2 mol %/2 mol %) under mild conditions, providing rapid and facile access to a series of functionalized 2-allyl-indolin-3-ones with very good reactivity (up to 99 % yield) and excellent enantioselectivity (up to 99 % ee). Theoretical calculations reveal that enhancement of the acidity of the chiral phosphoric acid by B(C6 F5 )3 significantly reduces the activation free energy barrier. Furthermore, collective favorable hydrogen-bonding interactions, especially the enhanced N-H⋅⋅⋅O hydrogen-bonding interaction, differentiates the free energy of the transition states of CPA and B(C6 F5 )3 /CPA, thereby inducing the improvement of stereoselectivity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is one of the effective ways for pesticide innovation to develop new insecticides from natural products as lead compounds. Quinine, the main alkaloid in the bark of cinchona tree as well as in plants in the same genus, is recognized as a safe and potent botanical insecticide to many insects. The structural modification of quinine into 9R-acyloxyquinine derivatives is a potential approach for the development of novel insecticides, which showed more toxicity than quinine. However, there are no reports on the insecticidal activity of 9Racyloxyquinine derivatives to control Mythimna separata. METHODS Endeavor to discover biorational natural products-based insecticides, 20 novel 9Racyloxyquinine derivatives were prepared and assessed for their insecticidal activity against M. separata in vivo by the leaf-dipping method at 1 mg/mL. RESULTS Among all the compounds, especially derivatives 5i, 5k and 5t exhibited the best insecticidal activity with final mortality rates of 50.0%, 57.1%, and 53.6%, respectively. CONCLUSION Overall, a free 9-hydroxyl group is not a prerequisite for insecticidal activity and C9- substitution is well tolerated; modification of out-ring double-bond is acceptable, and hydrogenation of double-bond enhances insecticidal activity; Quinine ring is essential and open of it is not acceptable. These preliminary results will pave the way for further modification of quinine in the development of potential new insecticides.

Abstract
Fluxional chiral DMAP-catalyzed kinetic resolutions of axially chiral biaryls were examined using density functional theory. Computational analyses lead to a revised understanding of this reaction in which the interplay of numerous non-covalent interactions control the conformation and flexibility of the active catalyst, the preferred mechanism, and the stereoselectivity. Notably, while the DMAP catalyst itself is confirmed to be highly fluxional, electrostatically driven π⋅⋅⋅π+ interactions render the active, acylated form of the catalyst highly rigid, explaining its pronounced stereoselectivity.

Abstract
The base-catalyzed rearrangement of arylindenols is a rare example of a suprafacial [1,3]-hydrogen atom transfer. The mechanism has been proposed to proceed via sequential [1,5]-sigmatropic shifts, which occur in a selective sense and avoid an achiral intermediate. A computational analysis using quantum chemistry casts serious doubt on these suggestions: These pathways have enormous activation barriers, and in constrast to what is observed experimentally, they overwhelmingly favor a racemic product. Instead we propose that a suprafacial [1,3]-prototopic shift occurs in a two-step deprotonation/reprotonation sequence. This mechanism is favored by 15 kcal mol-1 over that previously proposed. Most importantly, this is also consistent with stereospecificity since reprotonation occurs rapidly on the same π-face. We have used explicitly solvated molecular dynamics studies to study the persistence and condensed-phase dynamics of the intermediate ion-pair formed in this reaction. Chirality transfer is the result of a particularly resilient contact ion-pair, held together by electrostatic attraction and a critical NH···π interaction which ensures that this species has an appreciable lifetime even in polar solvents such as DMSO and MeOH.

A comprehensive density functional theory investigation was employed to disclose the effect of reaction conditions on the mechanism and effective anion relay sequence of a NaH promoted non-Brook rearrangement of benzaldehyde and 1-cinnamoylcyclopropanecarboxamides. Two main mechanisms were explored under four different reaction conditions: Na+-assisted and nH2O-Na+, 2H2O-DMSO-Na+, and Na+-DMSO co-assisted, and the difference relies on the reaction sequence between the concerted ring-opening and recyclization and electrophilic addition. Being different from previous reports, a cooperative participation of water, solvent DMSO and counterion Na+ is revealed in the preferential mechanism. The preferred scenario undergoes five major steps: deprotonation, aza-Michael addition, electrophilic addition, NaOH elimination and a concerted ring-opening and recyclization step. The rate-determining step is the concerted ring-opening and recyclization process with an energy barrier of 30.2 kcal mol-1. We found that the effective anion relay of a non-Brook rearrangement order is N → Cα → O rather than the previously proposed aza-oxy-carbanion. Meanwhile, a mixed type of ARC chemistry through a novel non-Brook rearrangement was disclosed. Moreover, the non-covalent interactions between substrate and reactant extensively affect the anion relay process by hydrogen-bonding (O-HO and C-HO) and electrostatic (Na+O) interactions. Thus, our results provide insightful clues to the mechanism of the reaction condition catalyzed non-Brook rearrangement reaction.

Abstract
Enantioselective control of the chirality of a tertiary α-carbon in the products of a Nazarov cyclization of enones is challenging because the reaction involves an enantioselective proton transfer process. We herein report the use of cooperative catalysis using Lewis acids and chiral Brønsted acids to control the stereochemistry of the tertiary α-carbon in the products of this reaction. Specifically, with ZnCl2 and a chiral spiro phosphoric acid as catalysts, we realized the first enantioselective construction of cyclopenta[b]indoles with chiral tertiary α-carbons via Nazarov cyclization of indole enone substrates with only one coordinating site. Mechanistic studies revealed that the chiral spiro phosphoric acid acts as a multifunctional catalyst: it co-catalyzes the cyclization of the dienone and enantioselectively catalyzes a proton transfer reaction of the enol intermediate. This new strategy of enantioselective control by means of cooperative catalysis may show utility for other challenging asymmetric cyclization reactions.

Abstract
γ-Butenolides, γ-butyrolactones, and derivatives, especially in enantiomerically pure form, constitute the structural core of numerous natural products which display an impressive range of biological activities which are important for the development of novel physiological and therapeutic agents. Furthermore, optically active γ-butenolides and γ-butyrolactones serve also as a prominent class of chiral building blocks for the synthesis of diverse biological active compounds and complex molecules. Taking into account the varying biological activity profiles and wide-ranging structural diversity of the optically active γ-butenolide or γ-butyrolactone structure, the development of asymmetric synthetic strategies for assembling such challenging scaffolds has attracted major attention from synthetic chemists in the past decade. This review offers an overview of the different enantioselective synthesis of γ-butenolides and γ-butyrolactones which employ catalytic amounts of metal complexes or organocatalysts, with emphasis focused on the mechanistic issues that account for the observed stereocontrol of the representative reactions, as well as practical applications and synthetic potentials.

Abstract
The simultaneous α-iodination and Nβ-arylation mechanism of 5-alkyloxy-4-phenylamino-2(5H)-furanone by (diacetoxyiodo)benzene was investigated by means of density functional theory (DFT) with B3LYP/6-31G*//LANL2DZ, selecting 4-(diphenylamino)-5-methyloxy-3-iodo-2(5H)-furanone as the calculation model. In addition, the effect of solvent on the reaction pathway was investigated using the Polarisable Continuum Model (PCM). Good agreement was found between the computational and the experimental results. Furthermore, single crystals of 4-(diphenylamino)-5-ethoxy-3-iodo-2(5H)-furanone were grown by slow evaporation technique. The molecular structure analysis was performed by single crystal X-ray analysis and theoretical calculations using a semi-empirical quantum chemical method and DFT/B3LYP methods with a LANL2DZ as basis set.

Abstract
A highly enantioselective β-isocupreidine (β-ICD) catalyzed synthesis of dihydropyran-fused benzofurans through [4+2] cycloaddition of allenoates and benzofuranone alkenes was developed. Switchable chirality inversion of cycloaddition products was achieved by replacing the phenolic proton of the catalyst with a methyl, demonstrating an amazing effect of minimal structural variation on inverting enantioselectivity. DFT calculations were utilized to elucidate the origin of the observed phenomena. Computation also provided a clue for a rational design in which the multi-hydrogen bond with the alcohol additive was found to improve the enantioselectivity of the cycloaddition. Finally, the substrate scope was examined, in which a number of functionalized dihydropyran-fused benzofurans could be obtained in high yields (up to 97 %) with very good regio- (>20:1) and enantioselectivities (up to 98:2 e.r.).
