Abstract
We describe early and recent advances in the fascinating field of combined magnetic and optical properties of inorganic coordination compounds and in particular of 3d-4f single molecule magnets. We cover various applied techniques which allow for the correlation of results obtained in the frequency and time domain in order to highlight the specific properties of these compounds and the future challenges towards multidimensional spectroscopic tools. An important point is to understand the details of the interplay of magnetic and optical properties through performing time-resolved studies in the presence of external fields especially magnetic ones. This will enable further exploration of this fundamental interactions i. e. the two components of electromagnetic radiation influencing optical properties.

Theoretical exploration of single-molecule magnetic and single-molecule toroic behaviors in peroxide-bridged double-triangular {MII3LnIII3} (M = Ni, Cu and Zn; Ln = Gd, Tb and Dy) complexes. Abstract
Detailed state-of-the-art ab initio and density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been undertaken to understand both Single-Molecule Magnetic (SMM) and Single-Molecule Toroic (SMT) behaviors of fascinating 3d-4f {M3Ln3} triangular complexes having the molecular formula [MII3LnIII3(O2)L3(PyCO2)3](OH)2(ClO4)2·8H2O (with M = Zn; Ln = Dy (1), Tb (2) & Gd (3) and M = Cu; Ln = Dy (4), Tb (5) & Gd (6)) and [Ni3Ln3(H2O)3(mpko)9(O2)(NO3)3](ClO4)·3CH3OH·3CH3CN (Ln = Dy (7), Tb (8), and Gd (9)) [mpkoH = 1-(pyrazin-2-yl)ethanone oxime]. All these complexes possess a peroxide ligand that bridges the {LnIII3} triangle in a μ3-η3:η3 fashion and the oxygen atoms/oxime of co-ligands that connect each MII ion to the {LnIII3} triangle. Through our computational studies, we tried to find the key role of the peroxide bridge and how it affects the SMM and SMT behavior of these complexes. Primarily, ab initio Complete Active Space Self-Consistent Field (CASSCF) SINGLE_ANISO + RASSI-SO + POLY_ANISO calculations were performed on 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, and 8 to study the anisotropic behavior of each Ln(III) ion, to derive the magnetic relaxation mechanism and to calculate the LnIII-LnIII and CuII/NiII-LnIII magnetic coupling constants. DFT calculations were also performed to validate these exchange interactions (J) by computing the GdIII-GdIII and CuII/NiII-GdIII interactions in 3, 6, and 9. Our calculations explained the experimental magnetic relaxation processes and the magnetic exchange interactions for all the complexes, which also strongly imply that the peroxide bridge plays a role in the SMM behavior observed in these systems. On the other hand, this peroxide bridge does not support the SMT behavior. To investigate the effect of bridging ions in {M3Ln3} systems, we modeled a {ZnII3DyIII3} complex (1a) with a hydroxide ion replacing the bridged peroxide ion in complex 1 and considered a hydroxide-bridged {CoIII3DyIII3} complex (10) having the formula [Co3Dy3(OH)4(OOCCMe3)6(teaH)3(H2O)3](NO3)2·H2O. We discovered that as compared to the LoProp charges of the peroxide ion, the greater negative charges on the bridging hydroxide ion reduce quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) effects, enabling more desirable SMM characteristics and also leading to good SMT behavior.

Abstract
Single-molecule toroics (SMTs), defined as a type of molecules with toroidal arrangement of magnetic moment associated with bi-stable non-magnetic ground states, are promising candidates for high-density information storage and the development of molecule based multiferroic materials with linear magneto-electric coupling and multiferroic behavior. The design and synthesis of SMTs by arranging the magnetic anisotropy axis in a circular pattern at the molecular level have been of great interest to scientists for last two decades since the first detection of the SMT behavior in the seminal Dy3 molecules. DyIII ion has long been the ideal candidate for constructing SMTs due to its Kramer ion nature as well as high anisotropy. Nevertheless, other LnIII ions such as TbIII and HoIII ions, as well as some paramagnetic transition metal ions, have also been used to construct many nontraditional SMTs. Therefore, we review the progress in the studies of SMTs based on the nontraditional perspective, ranging from the 3D topological to 1D&2D&3D polymeric SMTs, and 3d-4f to non Dy-based SMTs. We hope the understanding we provide about nontraditional SMTs will be helpful in designing novel SMTs.

Abstract
Molecular nanomagnets (MNMs), molecules containing interacting spins, have been a playground for quantum mechanics. They are characterized by many accessible low-energy levels that can be exploited to store and process quantum information. This naturally opens the possibility of using them as qudits, thus enlarging the tools of quantum logic with respect to qubit-based architectures. These additional degrees of freedom recently prompted the proposal for encoding qubits with embedded quantum error correction (QEC) in single molecules. QEC is the holy grail of quantum computing and this qudit approach could circumvent the large overhead of physical qubits typical of standard multi-qubit codes. Another important strength of the molecular approach is the extremely high degree of control achieved in preparing complex supramolecular structures where individual qudits are linked preserving their individual properties and coherence. This is particularly relevant for building quantum simulators, controllable systems able to mimic the dynamics of other quantum objects. The use of MNMs for quantum information processing is a rapidly evolving field which still requires to be fully experimentally explored. The key issues to be settled are related to scaling up the number of qudits/qubits and their individual addressing. Several promising possibilities are being intensively explored, ranging from the use of single-molecule transistors or superconducting devices to optical readout techniques. Moreover, new tools from chemistry could be also at hand, like the chiral-induced spin selectivity. In this paper, we will review the present status of this interdisciplinary research field, discuss the open challenges and envisioned solution paths which could finally unleash the very large potential of molecular spins for quantum technologies.

Abstract
Enhancing blocking temperature (TB) is one of the holy grails in Single Molecule Magnets(SMMs), as any future potential application in this class of molecules is directly correlated to this parameter. Among many factors contributing to a reduction of TB value, Quantum Tunnelling of Magnetisation (QTM), a phenomenon that is a curse or a blessing based on the application sought after, tops the list. Theoretical tools based on density functional and ab initio CASSCF/RASSI-SO methods have played a prominent role in estimating various spin Hamiltonian parameters and establishing the mechanism of magnetization relaxation in this class of molecules. Particularly, various strategies to quench QTM effects go hand-in-hand with experiments, and different methods proposed to quell QTM effects are scattered in the literature. In this perspective, we have explored various approaches that are proposed in the literature to quench QTM effects, and these include the role of (i) local symmetry of lanthanides, (ii) super-exchange interaction in {3d-4f} complexes, (iii) direct-exchange interaction in {radical-4f} and metal-metal bonded complexes to suppress the QTM, (iv) utilizing external stimuli such as an electric field or pressure to modulate the QTM and (v) avoiding QTM effects by stabilising toroidal states in 4f and {3d-4f} clusters. We believe the strategies summarized here will help to design new-generation SMMs.

Abstract
Materials that coexist magnetic and electric properties on the molecular scale in single-molecule magnets (SMMs) with peculiar quantum behaviors have promise in molecular electronics and spintronics. Nevertheless, such molecular materials are limited in potentials because their magnetic signal cannot be transformed into an electrical signal through magnetoresistance or Hall effects for their high insulativity. The discovery of an entirely new material, ferroelectric SMMs (FE SMMs) is reported. This FE SMM also shows single-molecule magnetic behaviors, toroidal magnetic moments, and room-temperature ferroelectricity. The toroidal moment is formed by a vortex distribution of magnetic dipoles in triangular Dy3 clusters. The analysis of ac magnetic susceptibility reveals the coexistence of three distinct magnetic relaxation processes at low temperatures. The ferroelectricity is introduced by incorporating polar alcohol molecules in the structure, which is confirmed by the X-ray diffraction and optical second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements. Moreover, the dielectric measurements reveal a ferroelectric-to-ferroelectric phase transition around 150 K due to the symmetry change from Pc to Pna21 . The coexistence of toroidal moment and ferroelectricity along with quantum magnetism in the rare-earth single-molecule magnets yields a unique class of multiferroics.

Abstract
Two lanthanide single-molecule magnets (SMMs) [Dy3(μ3-OH)(HL-1)3(H2O)3](NO3)2·3H3O (1, H3L-1 = (E)-3-(((8-hydroxyquinolin-2-yl)methylene)amino)propane-1,2-diol) and [Dy6(μ3-OH)4(H2L-2)4(HL-2)2(L-2)2] (2, H3L-2 = (E)-2-hydroxy-N'-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)benzohydrazide) were synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. Complex 1 contains a triangular Dy3 core in which the three Dy3+ ions share a μ3-OH- anion and the deprotonated ligands of (HL-1)2- serve both capping and bridging functions, while 2 displays a centrosymmetric hexanuclear DyIII structure with two similar Dy3 triangular cores ligated by two fully deprotonated (L-2)3- ligands, each of which shares two μ3-OH- anions. All the DyIII ions are eight-coordinated with quasi D2d or C2v symmetry. Magnetic studies reveal that 1 exhibited two-step magnetic relaxation under an applied dc field of 800 Oe, with effective energy barriers of 40.1 and 31.0 K for the slow relaxation (SR) and fast relaxation regimes (FR), respectively. Meanwhile, 2 only showed a tail of slow magnetic relaxation at above 2 K. Ab initio calculations have been carried out to show the nature of their different magnetic properties.

Abstract
For single-molecule toroics (SMTs) based on noncollinear Ising spins, intramolecular magnetic dipole–dipole coupling favours a head-to-tail vortex arrangement of the semi-classical magnetic moments associated with a toroidal ground state. However, to what extent does this effect survive beyond the semi-classical Ising limit? Here, we theoretically investigate the role of dipolar interactions in stabilising ground-state toroidal moments in quantum Heisenberg rings with and without on-site magnetic anisotropy. For the prototypical triangular SMT with strong on-site magnetic anisotropy, we illustrate that, together with noncollinear exchange, intramolecular magnetic dipole–dipole coupling serves to preserve ground-state toroidicity. In addition, we investigate the effect on quantum tunnelling of the toroidal moment in Kramers and non-Kramers systems. In the weak anisotropy limit, we find that, within some critical ion–ion distances, intramolecular magnetic dipole–dipole interactions, diagonalised over the entire Hilbert space of the quantum system, recover ground-state toroidicity in ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic odd-membered rings with up to seven sites, and are further stabilised by Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya coupling.

Abstract
The search of novel quasi-1D materials is one of the important aspects in the field of material science. Toroidal moment, the order parameter of ferrotoroidic order, can be generated by a head-to-tail configuration of magnetic moment. It has been theoretically proposed that 1D dimerized and antiferromagnetic (AFM)-like spin chain hosts ferrotoroidicity and has the toroidal moment composed of only two antiparallel spins. Here, the authors report a ferrotoroidic candidate of Ba6 Cr2 S10 with such a theoretical model of spin chain. The structure consists of unique dimerized face-sharing CrS6 octahedral chains along the c axis. An AFM-like ordering at ≈10 K breaks both space- and time-reversal symmetries and the magnetic point group of mm'2'allows three ferroic orders in Ba6 Cr2 S10 : (anti)ferromagnetic, ferroelectric, and ferrotoroidic orders. Their investigation reveals that Ba6 Cr2 S10 is a rare ferrotoroid ic candidate with quasi 1D spin chain, which can be considered as a starting point for the further exploration of the physics and applications of ferrotoroidicity.

Abstract
The promising future of storing and processing quantized information at the molecular level has been attracting the study of Single-Molecule Magnets (SMMs) for almost three decades. Although some recent breakthroughs are mainly about the SMMs containing only one lanthanide ion, we believe SMMs can tell a much deeper story than the single-ion anisotropy. Here in this Perspective, we will try to draw a unified picture of SMMs as a delicately coupled spin system between multiple spin centres. The hierarchical couplings will be presented step-by-step, from the intra-atomic hyperfine coupling, to the direct and indirect intra-molecular couplings with neighbouring spin centres, and all the way to the inter-molecular and spin–phonon couplings. Along with the discussions on their distinctive impacts on the energy level structures and thus magnetic behaviours, a promising big picture for further studies is proposed, encouraging the multifaceted developments of molecular magnetism and beyond. In this Perspective, we draw a unified picture for single-molecule magnets as delicately coupled spin systems, discuss the hierarchical couplings (from intra-atomic to inter-molecular) and their distinctive impacts on the magnetic behaviours.![]()

Abstract
Targeted approaches for manipulating the coordination geometry of lanthanide ions are a promising way to synthesize high-performance single-molecule magnets (SMMs), but most of the successful examples reported to date focus on mononuclear complexes. Herein, we describe a strategy to assemble dinuclear SMMs with DyIII ions in approximate D5h coordination geometry based on pyrazolate-based macrocyclic ligands with two binding sites. A Dy4 complex with a rhomb-like arrangement of four DyIII as well as two dinuclear complexes having axial chlorido ligands (Dy2·Cl and Dy2*·Cl) were obtained; in the latter case, substituting Cl- by SCN- gave Dy2·SCN. Magneto-structural studies revealed that the μ-OH bridges with short Dy-O bonds dominate the magnetic anisotropy of the DyIII ions in centrosymmetric Dy4 to give a vortex type diamagnetic ground state. Dynamic magnetic studies of Dy4 identified two relaxation processes under zero field, one of which is suppressed after applying a dc field. For complexes Dy2·Cl and Dy2*·Cl, the DyIII ions feature almost perfect D5h environment, but both complexes only behave as field-induced SMMs (Ueff = 19 and 25 K) due to the weak axial Cl- donors. In Dy2·SCN additional MeOH coordination leads to a distorted D2d geometry of the DyIII ions, yet SMMs properties at zero field are observed due to the relatively strong axial ligand field provided by SCN- (Ueff = 43 K). Further elaboration of preorganizing macrocyclic ligands appears to be a promising strategy for imposing a desired coordination geometry with parallel orientation of the anisotropy axes of proximate DyIII ions in a targeted approach.

Abstract
In this mini-review, we highlight the research advanced in the field of single-molecule toroics (SMTs) with a specific focus on the triangular Ln3-based SMTs. SMTs are molecules with a toroidal magnetic state and are insensitive to homogeneous magnetic fields but cooperate with charge and spin currents. The rapid growth in the area of SMTs witnessed in recent years is correlated not only to the interest to understand the fundamental physics of these molecules but also to the intriguing potential applications proposed, as the SMTs have several advantages compared to other classes of molecules such as single-molecule magnets (SMMs). The important chemico-structural strategy in SMT chemistry is to choose and design ligand and bridging species that will help to attain toroidal behavior. Considering this primarily, all the Dy3 SMTs reported so far are summarized, showing how utilizing different peripheral ligands influences the toroidal nature beyond the role of the symmetry of the molecule and stronger dipolar interactions. Likewise, linking Dy3 toroidal units through 3d ions with suitable peripheral/bridging ligands enhances the toroidal magnetic moment and leads to fascinating physics of ferrotoroidal/antiferrotoridal behavior. Further, we have also summarized the recently reported non-Dy triangular SMTs.

Abstract
Assembly of dysprosium(iii) salts with a multidentate ligand H3L ((2-hydroxy)-N'-((8-hydroxyquinolin-2-yl)methylene)-benzohydrazide) affords a variety of products with different topological structures, namely [Dy(H2L)(HL)]·CH3OH (1), [Dy2(HL)2(C6H5COO)2(CH3OH)2]·3CH3OH (2), [Dy2(HL)2(NO3)2(DMF)4]·4DMF (3), [Dy4L4(CH3OH)4]·2CH3OH·4H2O (4) and ([Dy4(HL)4(C6H5COO)4(CH3OH)(H2O)]·2CH3OH·CH3CN·H2O)n (5). The versatile and flexible coordination modes of phenoxo groups from salicylic hydrazide prove to be a key factor in the assembly of corresponding structures depending upon the reaction conditions. It is noteworthy that ligands HL2- act as a long-distance link and further connect the Dy2 fragments into an infinite 1D chain due to the conformational flexibility resulting from the rotatable C-C bond in 5. Furthermore, the magnetic measurements were performed on all complexes. The dc magnetic susceptibility data evidence distinct magnetic coupling interactions in the dinuclear complexes 2 (antiferromagnetic) and 3 (ferromagnetic) despite their similar structures, and only complex 3 shows slow relaxation behavior of magnetization. Ab initio calculations and electrostatic potential analysis on complexes 2, 3, and three other complexes (6, 7, 8) incorporating different kinds of ligands reveal the important interrelationship of magnetic anisotropy, magnetic coupling interactions and SMM properties.

Abstract
In this article, correlated studies on a test set of 36 small molecules are carried out with both wavefunction (HF, MP2, CCSD) and density functional (LDA, KT3, cTPSS, cM06-L) methods. The effect of correlation on exotic response properties such as molecular electronic anapole susceptibilities is studied and the performance of the various density functional approximations are benchmarked against CCSD and/or MP2. Atoms and molecules are traditionally classified into "diamagnetic" and "paramagnetic" based on their isotropic response to uniform magnetic fields. However, in this article, we propose a more fine-grained classification of molecular systems on the basis of their response to generally nonuniform magnetic fields. The relation of orientation to different qualitative responses is also considered.

Abstract
Trinuclear lanthanoid clusters have been synthesised and investigated as toroidal spin systems. A pyridyl functionalised β-diketonate, 1,3-bis(pyridin-2-yl)propane-1,3-dione (o-dppdH) has been used to synthesise a family of clusters of the form [Dy3(OH)2(o-dppd)3Cl2(H2O)4]Cl2·7H2O (1), [Tb3(o-dppd)3(μ3-OH)2(CH3CH2OH)3Cl3][Tb3(o-dppd)3(μ3-OH)2(H2O)(CH3CH2OH)2Cl3]Cl2·H2O (2), [Ho3(OH)2(o-dppd)3Cl(H2O)5]Cl3·3H2O (3) and [Er3(OH)2(o-dppd)3Cl2(H2O)3(CH3OH)]Cl2·3H2O·CH3OH (4). Despite the previous occurrence of this structural motif in the literature, these systems have not been widely investigated in terms of torodic behaviour. Magnetic studies were used to further characterise the complexes. DC susceptibility studies support weak antiferromagnetic exchange in the complexes. Slow magnetic relaxation behaviour is observed in the dynamic AC magnetic studies for complex 1. Theoretical studies predict that complex 1 and 3 have a non-magnetic ground state based on a toroidal arrangement of spins. Changes to the coordination environment in 2 do not support a toroic spin state. The prolate nature of the ErIII centres in complex 4 and large transverse anisotropy do not support the toroidal arrangement of lanthanoid spins in the complex.

Abstract
By employing mixed ligands, a new trinuclear dysprosium complex [Dy3(dbm)3(L)4](ClO4)2·CH2Cl2·2MeOH (1, Hdbm = dibenzoylmethane; HL = 2-methoxy-6-((quinolin-8-ylimino)methyl)phenol) was synthesized by a one-pot reaction. According to structural characterization, all the 8-coordinated Dy(iii) sites are well arranged with slightly distorted square antiprism (D4d) geometries. Magnetic measurements reveal that 1 exhibits typical single-molecule magnetic behavior at zero magnetic field and shows rarely open hysteresis loops up to 3 K among open-ring {Dy3} SMMs, where the relaxation time remains very stable under the protection from the Dy-Dy magnetic coupling in the open-ring arrangement of Ising spins.

Abstract
We report the synthesis and magnetic properties of three new nine-membered Fe(III)-Dy(III) cyclic coordination clusters (CCCs), with a core motif of [Fe6Dy3(μ-OMe)9(vanox)6(X-benz)6] where the benzoate ligands are substituted in the para-position with X = F (1), Cl (2), Br (3). Single crystal X-ray diffraction structure analyses show that for the smaller fluorine or chlorine substituents the resulting structures exhibit an isostructural Fe6Dy3 core, whilst the 4-bromobenzoate ligand leads to structural distortions which affect the dynamic magnetic behavior. The magnetic susceptibility and magnetization of 1-3 were investigated and show similar behavior in the dc (direct current) magnetic data. Additional ac (alternating current) magnetic measurements show that all compounds exhibit frequency-dependent and temperature-dependent signals in the in-phase and out-of-phase component of the susceptibility and can therefore be described as field-induced SMMs. The fluoro-substituted benzoate cluster 1 shows a magnetic behavior closely similar to that of the corresponding unsubstituted Fe6Dy3 cluster, with Ueff = 21.3 K within the Orbach process. By increasing the size of the substituent toward 4-chlorobenzoate within 2, an increase of the energy barrier to Ueff = 36.1 K was observed. While the energy barrier becomes higher from 1 to 2, highlighting that the introduction of different substituents on the benzoate ligand in the para-position has an impact on the magnetic properties, cluster 3 shows a significantly different SMM behavior where Ueff is reduced in the Orbach regime to only 4.9 K.

Abstract
Near-Infrared emissions are highly important in biological and telecommunications technology. For the first time, NIR-to-NIR emission was achieved in a water-soluble molecular cluster-aggregate. The erbium analogue of the highly tunable [Ln6(teaH)6(NO3)6] complex emits at 1530 nm with direct excitation at 980 nm, and can be boosted by replacing three erbium ions with three ytterbium(iii), in the molecular structure. The presented methodology is a unique approach to probe the effect of composition control and harness the luminescence properties of nanoscale molecular material.

Abstract
Isolation and structural characterization of novel organoantimony(V)-based oxo clusters are reported. (RSb)4(OH)4(t-BuPO3)6 and (RSb)2(O)(t-BuPO3H)6 independently in the presence of pyridine under solvothermal conditions afford the hexanuclear organoantimonate clusters [(RSb)6(μ3-O)2(μ2-O)6(t-BuPO3)4], where R = p-i-PrC6H4 (1), p-ClC6H4 (2). Further, reaction of organostibonate phosphonate with Ti(OiPr)4 in the presence of pyridine under solvothermal conditions afforded the mixed-metal titanium stibonate hexanuclear clusters [(RSb)2Ti4(μ3-O)2(μ2-O)2(t-BuPO3)4(μ-OCH3)4(OCH3)4], where R = p-i-PrC6H4 (3), p-ClC6H4 (4). Band gap measurements were performed on 1-4. They reveal a remarkable reduction in the band gap on moving from the heavier main-group-based oxo cages (1 and 2) to the titanium-incorporated oxo cages (3 and 4).

Abstract
The structural, magnetic and theoretical aspects are described for three triangular lanthanide complexes, [Tb(OH)(teaH2)3(paa)3]Cl2 (1), [Dy(OH)(teaH2)3(paa)3]Cl2 (2) and [Ho(OH)(teaH2)3(paa)3]Cl2 (3), and a hexanuclear wheel of formula [Dy(pdeaH)6(NO3)6] (4) [teaH3 = triethanolamine, paaH = N-(2-pyridyl)-acetoacetamide and pdeaH3 = 3-[bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino]propan-1-ol]. Each complex displays single molecule toroidal behaviour as rationalised using high-level ab initio calculations. Complexes 2 and 3 are the first examples of mixed moment single molecule toroidal complexes featuring non-Kramers ions.

Abstract
The enhancement of toroic motifs through coupling toroidal moments within molecular nanomagnets is a new, interesting and relevant approach for both fundamental research and potential quantum computation applications. We investigate a Dy8 molecular cluster and discover it has a antiferrotoroic ground state with slow magnetic relaxation. The experimental characterization of the magnetic anisotropy axes of each magnetic center and their exchange interactions represents a considerable challenge due to the non-magnetic nature of the toroidal motif. To overcome this and obtain access to the low energy states of Dy8 we establish a multi-orientation single-crystal micro Hall sensor magnetometry approach. Using an effective Hamiltonian model we then unpick the microscopic spin structure of Dy8, leading to a canted antiferrotoroidic tetramer molecular ground state. These findings are supported with electrostatic calculations that independently confirm the experimentally determined magnetic anisotropy axes for each DyIII ion within the molecule.

Abstract
Two dinuclear lanthanide complexes (Gd and Dy) were prepared and characterized by X-ray, magnetic and computational methods. The Dy analogue shows SMM behavior with an energy barrier of 98.4 K in the absence of an applied dc field. Theoretical calculations were performed on model complexes which support the hypothesis that the energy barrier will increase if the soft-donor atoms S and Se are used in lieu of an O donor.

Abstract
To develop new lanthanide single-molecule magnets (SMMs), two new complexes of [Dy2(MeOH)2(HL1)2(NO3)2]·2MeOH (1) and [Dy6(μ3-OH)2(L2)2(HL2)2(H2L2)2Cl2(EtOH)2]Cl2·3EtOH·CH3CN (2) were obtained by reacting Dy(NO)3·6H2O with 3-amino-1,2-propanediol in the presence of 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde for 1 and by reacting DyCl3·6H2O with 1,1-di(hydroxymethyl)ethylamine in the presence of 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde for 2, respectively, in which the Schiff base ligands of 3-(((2-hydroxynaphthaen-1-yl)methylene)amino)-propane-1,2-diol (H3L1) and 2-(β-naphthalideneamino)-2-(hydroxylmethyl)-1-propanol (H3L2) were in situ formed. The two Dy(III) ions in 1 are linked by two Oalkoxy atoms of two (HL1)2- ligands to build a dinuclear skeleton. Complex 2 presents a nearly planar hexanuclear skeleton constructed from four edge-shared triangular Dy3 units with the two peripheral Dy3 units consolidated by two μ3-O bridges and the two central Dy3 units consolidated by one μ3-O bridge. Obviously, they exhibit a different topological arrangement resulting from the linkage of the Schiff base ligands. Both of them are typical SMMs under zero dc fields, with a Ueff/ kB value of 34 K for 1 and 40 K for 2, respectively. Multiple processes are involved in the relaxation processes of 1 and 2. The different SMM performances of the two titled complexes reveal a tuning effect of Schiff base ligands through tuning the coordination environments and topological arrangements of dysprosium(III) ions, which is supported by the theoretical calculations.
