Mechanism of hydrogenolysis of an iridium-methyl bond: evidence for a methane complex intermediate

Treatment of trans-[Ir(H)(N)2(iPr)4(POCOP)(DMAP)][BAr4f] (2) with H2 (1 bar) under ambient conditions (298 K) results in the formation of a trans-[Ir(H)(η2-H2)(iPr)4(POCOP)(DMAP)][BAr4f] (3) complex. Complex 3 exhibits H-atom site exchange between the bound H2 and the hydride ligands which are mutually trans to one another. A plausible mechanism of this exchange involves metal-ligand cooperativity as studied by computations.

Iridium complexes of an ortho-trifluoromethylphenyl substituted PONOP pincer ligand

The synthesis and iridium coordination chemistry of a new pyridine-based phosphinito pincer ligand 2,6-(Ar^F₂PO)₂C₅H₃N (PONOP-Ar^F; Ar^F = 2-(CF₃)C₆H₄) are described, where the P-donors have ortho-trifluoromethylphenyl substituents. The iridium(III) 2,2'-biphenyl (biph) derivative [Ir(PONOP-Ar^F)(biph)Cl] was obtained by reaction with [Ir(biph)(COD)Cl]₂ (COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) and subsequent halide ion abstraction enabled isolation of [Ir(PONOP-Ar^F)(biph)]⁺ which features an Ir ← F-C bonding interaction in the solid state. Hydrogenolysis of the biphenyl ligand and formation of [Ir(PONOP-Ar^F)(H)₂]⁺ was achieved by prolonged reaction of [Ir(PONOP-Ar^F)(biph)]⁺ with dihydrogen. This transformation paved the way for isolation and crystallographic characterisation of low valent iridium derivatives through treatment of the dihydride with tert-butylethylene (TBE). The iridium(I) π-complex [Ir(PONOP-Ar^F)(TBE)]⁺ is thermally stable but substitution of TBE can be achieved by reaction with carbon monoxide. The solid-state structure of the mono-carbonyl product [Ir(PONOP-Ar^F)(CO)]⁺ is notable for an intermolecular anagostic interaction between the metal centre and a pentane molecule which co-crystallises within a cleft defined by two aryl phosphine substituents.

P,N-type phosphaalkene-based Ir(i) complexes: synthesis, coordination chemistry, and catalytic applications

Iridium P,N phosphaalkene complexes show a rich coordination chemistry with unusual twofold C–H activation. The Ir(i) chloride complex can be applied for C–N coupling and alcohol upgrading reactions.

Metathesis by Partner Interchange in σ-Bond Ligands: Expanding Applications of the σ-CAM Mechanism

In 2007 two of us defined the σ‐Complex Assisted Metathesis mechanism (Perutz and Sabo‐Etienne, Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2007, 46, 2578–2592), that is, the σ‐CAM concept. This new approach to reaction mechanisms brought together metathesis reactions involving the formation of a variety of metal–element bonds through partner‐interchange of σ‐bond complexes. The key concept that defines a σ‐CAM process is a single transition state for metathesis that is connected by two intermediates that are σ‐bond complexes while the oxidation state of the metal remains constant in precursor, intermediates and product. This mechanism is appropriate in situations where σ‐bond complexes have been isolated or computed as well‐defined minima. Unlike several other mechanisms, it does not define the nature of the transition state. In this review, we highlight advances in the characterization and dynamic rearrangements of σ‐bond complexes, most notably alkane and zincane complexes, but also different geometries of silane and borane complexes. We set out a selection of catalytic and stoichiometric examples of the σ‐CAM mechanism that are supported by strong experimental and/or computational evidence. We then draw on these examples to demonstrate that the scope of the σ‐CAM mechanism has expanded to classes of reaction not envisaged in 2007 (additional σ‐bond ligands, agostic complexes, sp²‐carbon, surfaces). Finally, we provide a critical comparison to alternative mechanisms for metathesis of metal–element bonds.

Unexpected reactivity of a PONNOP 'expanded pincer' ligand

We report the synthesis, characterization and coordination chemistry of a new naphthyridine-derived phosphinite PONNOP expanded pincer ligand. As envisioned, the dinucleating ligand readily binds two copper(i) centers in close proximity, but undergoes an unexpected rearrangement in the presence of nickel(ii) salts to form an interesting PONNP pincer platform.

Synthesis and Structural Dynamics of Five-Coordinate Rh(III) and Ir(III) PNP and PONOP Pincer Complexes

The synthesis and characterization of a homologous series of five-coordinate rhodium(III) and iridium(III) complexes of PNP (2,6-( tBu₂PCH₂)₂C₅H₃N) and PONOP (2,6-( tBu₂PO)₂C₅H₃N) pincer ligands are described: [M(PNP)(biph)][BAr^F₄] (M = Rh, 1a; Ir, 1b; biph = 2,2'-biphenyl; Ar^F = 3,5-(CF₃)₂C₆H₃) and [M(PONOP)(biph)][BAr^F₄] (M = Rh, 2a; Ir, 2b). These complexes are structurally dynamic in solution, exhibiting pseudorotation of the biph ligand on the ¹H NMR time scale (Δ G^⧧ ca. 60 kJ mol^-1) and, in the case of the flexible PNP complexes, undergoing interconversion between helical and puckered pincer ligand conformations (Δ G^⧧ ca. 10 kJ mol^-1). Remarkably, the latter is sufficiently facile that it persists in the solid state, leading to temperature-dependent disorder in the associated X-ray crystal structures. Reaction of 1 and 2 with CO occurs for the iridium congeners 1b and 2b, leading to the formation of sterically congested carbonyl derivatives.

H2 addition to (Me4PCP)Ir(CO): studies of the isomerization mechanism

Reduced steric demand of the Me4PCP pincer ligand (PCP = κ3-C6H4-1,3-[CH2PR2]2, R = Me), allows for a more open metal center. This is evident through structure and reactivity comparisons between (Me4PCP)Ir derivatives and other (R4PCP)Ir complexes (R = tBu, iPr, CF3). In particular, isomerization from cis-(R4PCP)Ir(H)2(CO) to trans-(R4PCP)Ir(H)2(CO) is more facile when R = Me than when R = iPr. Deuterium incorporation in the hydride ligands from solvent C6D6 was observed during this isomerization when R = Me. This deuterium exchange has not been observed for other analogous R4PCP iridium complexes. A kinetic study of the cis/trans isomerization combined with computational studies suggests that the cis/trans isomerization proceeds through a migratory-insertion pathway involving a formyl intermediate.

Theoretical study on the mechanism of iridium-catalyzed γ-functionalization of primary alkyl C–H bonds

The mechanism of the iridium-catalyzed functionalization of a primary C–H bond at the γ position of an alcohol 5 is investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. A new IrIII–IrV mechanism is found to be more feasible than the previously reported IrI–IrIII mechanism. 10 In the IrIII–IrV mechanism, the reaction begins with the initial formation of (Me4phen)IrIII(H)[Si(OR)Et2]2 from the catalyst precursor, [Ir(cod)OMe]2 (cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene). The catalytic cycle includes five steps: (1) the insertion of norbornene into the Ir–H bond to produce (Me4phen)IrIII(norbornyl)[Si(OR)Et2]2 (R = –CH(C2H5)C3H7); (2) the Si–H oxidative addition of HSi(OR)Et2 to form (Me4phen)IrVH(norbornyl)[Si(OR)Et2]3; (3) the reductive elimination of norbornane to furnish (Me4phen)IrIII[Si(OR)Et2]3; (4) the intramolecular C–H activation of the primary C–H bond at the γ position; and (5) the Si–C reductive elimination to produce the final product and regenerate the catalyst. The highest barrier in the IrIII–IrV mechanism is 7.3 kcal/mol lower than that of the IrI–IrIII mechanism. In addition, the regioselectivity of the C–H activation predicted by this new IrIII–IrV mechanism is consistent with experimental observation.

Methyl Complexes of the Transition Metals

Organometallic chemistry can be considered as a wide area of knowledge that combines concepts of classic organic chemistry, that is, based essentially on carbon, with molecular inorganic chemistry, especially with coordination compounds. Transition-metal methyl complexes probably represent the simplest and most fundamental way to view how these two major areas of chemistry combine and merge into novel species with intriguing features in terms of reactivity, structure, and bonding. Citing more than 500 bibliographic references, this review aims to offer a concise view of recent advances in the field of transition-metal complexes containing M-CH3 fragments. Taking into account the impressive amount of data that are continuously provided by organometallic chemists in this area, this review is mainly focused on results of the last five years. After a panoramic overview on M-CH3 compounds of Groups 3 to 11, which includes the most recent landmark findings in this area, two further sections are dedicated to methyl-bridged complexes and reactivity.

Cationic mono and dicarbonyl pincer complexes of rhodium and iridium to assess the donor properties of PCcarbeneP ligands

The donor properties of five different PC_carbeneP ligands are assessed by evaluation of the CO stretching frequencies in iridium(i) and rhodium(i) carbonyl cations.

The reaction of an iridium PNP complex with parahydrogen facilitates polarisation transfer without chemical change

The short lived pincer complex [(C5H3N(CH2P((t)Bu)2)2)Ir(H)2(py)]BF4 is shown to be active for signal amplification by reversible exchange. This catalyst formulation enables the efficient transfer of polarization from parahydrogen to be placed into just a single molecule of the hyperpolarisation target, pyridine. When the catalysts (1)H nuclei are replaced by (2)H, increased levels of substrate hyperpolarization result and when the reverse situation is examined the catalyst itself is clearly visible through hyperpolarised signals. The ligand exchange pathways of [(C5H3N(CH2P((t)Bu)2)2)Ir(H)2(py)]BF4 that are associated with this process are shown to involve the formation of 16-electron [(C5H3N(CH2P((t)Bu)2)2)Ir(H)2]BF4 and the 18-electron H2 addition product [(C5H3N(CH2P((t)Bu)2)2)Ir(H)2(H2)]BF4.

Synthesis and characterization of carbazolide-based iridium PNP pincer complexes. Mechanistic and computational investigation of alkene hydrogenation: evidence for an Ir(III)/Ir(V)/Ir(III) catalytic cycle

New carbazolide-based iridium pincer complexes ((carb)PNP)Ir(C2H4), 3a, and ((carb)PNP)Ir(H)2, 3b, have been prepared and characterized. The dihydride, 3b, reacts with ethylene to yield the cis-dihydride ethylene complex cis-((carb)PNP)Ir(C2H4)(H)2. Under ethylene this complex reacts slowly at 70 °C to yield ethane and the ethylene complex, 3a. Kinetic analysis establishes that the reaction rate is dependent on ethylene concentration and labeling studies show reversible migratory insertion to form an ethyl hydride complex prior to formation of 3a. Exposure of cis-((carb)PNP)Ir(C2H4)(H)2 to hydrogen results in very rapid formation of ethane and dihydride, 3b. DFT analysis suggests that ethane elimination from the ethyl hydride complex is assisted by ethylene through formation of ((carb)PNP)Ir(H)(Et)(C2H4) and by H2 through formation of ((carb)PNP)Ir(H)(Et)(H2). Elimination of ethane from Ir(III) complex ((carb)PNP)Ir(H)(Et)(H2) is calculated to proceed through an Ir(V) complex ((carb)PNP)Ir(H)3(Et) which reductively eliminates ethane with a very low barrier to return to the Ir(III) dihydride, 3b. Under catalytic hydrogenation conditions (C2H4/H2), cis-((carb)PNP)Ir(C2H4)(H)2 is the catalyst resting state, and the catalysis proceeds via an Ir(III)/Ir(V)/Ir(III) cycle. This is in sharp contrast to isoelectronic (PCP)Ir systems in which hydrogenation proceeds through an Ir(III)/Ir(I)/Ir(III) cycle. The basis for this remarkable difference is discussed.
