Abstract
During the last decade, there has been an increasing interest in the rationalisation of how structural changes stabilise (or destabilise) diradical systems. Demonstrated herein is that indolocarbazole (ICz) diradicals, substituted with dicyanomethylene (DCM) groups, are useful motifs for dynamic covalent chemistry by self-assembling from isolated monomers to cyclophane structures. The comparison of ICz-based systems substituted with DCM groups in para- or meta-positions (p-ICz-CN and m-ICz-CN) and their short-chain carbazole analogues (p-Cz-CN and m-Cz-CN) may identify new potential design strategies for stimuli-responsive materials. The principal objectives of this investigation are the elucidation of (i) the connection between diradical character and the cyclophane stability, (ii) the spatial disposition of the cyclophane structures, (iii) the monomer/cyclophane interconversion both in solution and solid state in response to external stimuli and (iv) the impact that the different π-conjugation and electronic communication between the DCM terminals exerts on the electronic adsorption of the diradicals and their redox behavior. The spontaneous nature of the cyclophane structure is supported by the negative relative Gibbs free energies calculated at 298 K and experimentally by UV-Vis and Raman spectroscopy of the initial yellow solid powder. The conversion to monomeric species having diradical character was demonstrated by variable-temperature (VT) EPR, UV-Vis, Raman and IR measurements, resulting in appreciable chromic changes. In addition, electrochemical oxidation and reduction convert the cyclophane dimer (m-ICz-CN)2 to the monomer monocations and dianions, respectively. This research demonstrates how the chemical reactivity and physical properties of π-conjugated diradicals can be effectively tuned by subtle changes in their chemical structures.

Abstract
This work addresses a class of conjugated hydrocarbons that are expected to be singlet diradicals according to the topological Hückel Hamiltonian while possibly satisfying full on-bond electron pairing. These systems possess two degenerate singly occupied molecular orbitals (SOMOs), but aromaticity brought by properly positioned six-membered rings does prevent Jahn-Teller distortions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations performed on two emblematic examples confirm the strong bond-length alternation in the closed-shell solutions and the clear spatial symmetry in the open-shell spin-unrestricted determinants, the latter solution always being found to have significantly lower energy. Since the SOMOs are here of different symmetry, the wave function is free from ionic valence-bond component, and spin decontamination of the unrestricted DFT solutions and wave function calculations at the CASSCF-plus-second-order-perturbation level confirm the expected pure diradical character of such molecules. In contrast to disjoint diradicals, the SOMOs of present systems have large amplitudes on neighbor atoms, and we propose to name them entangled pure diradicals, further providing some prescription rules for their design. Additional calculations point out the qualitative contrast between these molecules and the related diradicaloids.

Abstract
In this work, we integrate the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) with the adiabatic connection (AC) method for efficient simulations of chemical problems on near-term quantum computers. Orbital-optimized VQE methods are employed to capture the strong correlation within an active space, and classical AC corrections recover the dynamical correlation effects comprising electrons outside of the active space. On two challenging strongly correlated problems, namely, the dissociation of N2 and the electronic structure of the tetramethyleneethane biradical, we show that the combined VQE-AC approach enhances the performance of VQE dramatically. Moreover, since the AC corrections do not bring any additional requirements on quantum resources or measurements, they can actually boost the VQE algorithms. Our work paves the way toward quantum simulations of real-life problems on near-term quantum computers.

Abstract
We develop a quantum embedding method that enables accurate and efficient treatment of interactions between molecules and an environment, while explicitly including many-body correlations. The molecule is composed of classical nuclei and quantum electrons, whereas the environment is modeled via charged quantum harmonic oscillators. We construct a general Hamiltonian and introduce a variational Ansatz for the correlated ground state of the fully interacting molecule-environment system. This wave function is optimized via the variational Monte Carlo method and the ground state energy is subsequently estimated through the diffusion Monte Carlo method. The proposed scheme allows an explicit many-body treatment of electrostatic, polarization, and dispersion interactions between the molecule and the environment. We study solvation energies and excitation energies of benzene derivatives, obtaining excellent agreement with explicit ab initio calculations and experiments.

Abstract
In this work, the diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) method is employed to calculate the energies of singlet and triplet states for a series of organic diradicals and diatomic diradicals with π2 configuration. Single-determinant-Jastrow (SDJ) trial wavefunctions for triplet states, two-determinant-Jastrow (2DJ) trial wavefunctions for the singlet states, and multi-determinant-Jastrow (MDJ) trial wavefunctions are employed in DMC calculations using restricted open-shell B3LYP (ROB3LYP) orbitals, complete-active-space self-consistent field (CASSCF) orbitals, state-average CASSCF orbitals, or frozen-CASSCF orbitals. Our results show that DMC energies using either SDJ/2DJ or MDJ with ROB3LYP orbitals are close to or lower than those with the other orbitals for organic diradicals, while they are not very sensitive to the employed orbitals for diatomic diradicals. Furthermore, using MDJ can reduce DMC energies to some extent for most of the investigated organic diradicals and some diatomic diradicals. The importance of MDJ on DMC energies can be estimated based on the percentage of main determinants in the CASCI wavefunction. On the other hand, singlet–triplet gaps can be calculated reasonably with DMC using MDJ with a mean absolute error of less than 2 kcal/mol with all these orbitals. CASCI wavefunctions using density functional theory orbitals are preferred in constructing MDJ trial wavefunctions in practical DMC calculations since it is easier to obtain such wavefunctions than CASSCF methods.

Abstract
Sudden polarization (SP) is one of the manifestations of electron transfer in the electronically excited states of molecules. Proposed initially to explain the unusual reactivity of photoexcited olefins, SP often occurs in the excited states of molecules possessing strongly correlated diradical ground state. Theoretical description of SP involves mixing between the singly excited and the doubly excited zwitterionic states, which makes it inaccessible with the use of the popular linear-response time-dependent density functional theory methods. In this work, an extended variant of the state-interaction state-averaged spin-restricted ensemble-referenced Kohn-Sham (SI-SA-REKS, or SSR) method is applied to study SP in a number of organic diradical systems. To this end, the analytical derivative formalism is derived and implemented for the SSR(3,2) method (see the main text for explanation of the acronym), which enables the automatic geometry optimization and obtains the relaxed density matrices as well as the electron binding energies and respective Dyson's orbitals. Application of the new method to SP in the lowest singlet excited state of ethylene agrees with the results obtained previously with the use of multireference methods of wavefunction theory. A number of interesting manifestations of SP are observed, such as the charge transfer in photoexcited tetramethyleneethene (TME) diradical mediated by the vibrational motion and conductivity switching in the excited state of a donor-acceptor dyad placed in an external electric field.

Abstract
Due to their multiconfigurational nature featuring strong electron correlation, accurate description of diradicals and diradicaloids is a challenge for quantum chemical methods. The recently developed mixed-reference spin-flip (MRSF)-TDDFT method is capable of describing the multiconfigurational electronic states of these systems while avoiding the spin-contamination pitfalls of SF-TDDFT. Here, we apply MRSF-TDDFT to study the adiabatic singlet-triplet (ST) gaps in a series of well-known diradicals and diradicaloids. On average, MRSF displays a very high prediction accuracy of the adiabatic ST gaps with the mean absolute error (MAE) amounting to 0.14 eV. In addition, MRSF is capable of accurately describing the effect of the Jahn-Teller distortion occurring in the trimethylenemethane diradical, the violation of the Hund rule in a series of the didehydrotoluene diradicals, and the potential energy surfaces of the didehydrobenzene (benzyne) diradicals. A convenient criterion for distinguishing diradicals and diradicaloids is suggested on the basis of the easily obtainable quantities. In all of these cases, which are difficult for the conventional methods of density functional theory (DFT), MRSF shows results consistent with the experiment and the high-level ab initio computations. Hence, the present study documents the reliability and accuracy of MRSF and lays out the guidelines for its application to strongly correlated molecular systems.

Abstract
We present a new implementation of density matrix renormalization group based tailored coupled clusters method (TCCSD), which employs the domain-based local pair natural orbital approach (DLPNO). Compared to the previous local pair natural orbital (LPNO) version of the method, the new implementation is more accurate, offers more favorable scaling, and provides more consistent behavior across the variety of systems. On top of the singles and doubles, we include the perturbative triples correction (T), which is able to retrieve even more dynamic correlation. The methods were tested on three systems: tetramethyleneethane, oxo-Mn(Salen), and iron(II)-porphyrin model. The first two were revisited to assess the performance with respect to LPNO-TCCSD. For oxo-Mn(Salen), we retrieved between 99.8 and 99.9% of the total canonical correlation energy which is an improvement of 0.2% over the LPNO version in less than 63% of the total LPNO runtime. Similar results were obtained for iron(II)-porphyrin. When the perturbative triples correction was employed, irrespective of the active space size or system, the obtained energy differences between two spin states were within the chemical accuracy of 1 kcal/mol using the default DLPNO settings.

Abstract
A variety of planar π-conjugated hydrocarbons such as heptauthrene, Clar's goblet and, recently synthesized, triangulene have two electrons occupying two degenerate molecular orbitals. The resulting spin of the interacting ground state is often correctly anticipated as S = 1, extending the application of Hund's rules to these systems, but this is not correct in some instances. Here we provide a set of rules to correctly predict the existence of zero mode states as well as the spin multiplicity of both the ground state and the low-lying excited states, together with their open- or closed-shell nature. This is accomplished using a combination of analytical arguments and configuration interaction calculations with a Hubbard model, both backed by quantum chemistry methods with a larger Gaussian basis set. Our results go beyond the well established Lieb's theorem and Ovchinnikov's rule, as we address the multiplicity and the open-/closed-shell nature of both ground and excited states.

Abstract
We introduce a new implementation of the coupled cluster method with single and double excitations tailored by the matrix product state wave functions (DMRG-TCCSD), which employs the local pair natural orbital (LPNO) approach. By exploiting locality in the coupled cluster stage of the calculation, we were able to remove some of the limitations that hindered the application of the canonical version of the method to larger systems and/or with larger basis sets. We assessed the accuracy of the approximation using two systems: tetramethyleneethane (TME) and oxo-Mn(Salen). Using the default cut-off parameters, we were able to recover over 99.7% and 99.8% of the canonical correlation energy for the triplet and singlet state of TME, respectively. In the case of oxo-Mn(Salen), we found that the amount of retrieved canonical correlation energy depends on the size of the complete active space (CAS)-we retrieved over 99.6% for the larger 27 orbital CAS and over 99.8% for the smaller 22 orbital CAS. The use of LPNO-TCCSD allowed us to perform these calculations up to quadruple-ζ basis set, amounting to 1178 basis functions. Moreover, we examined dependence of the ground state of oxo-Mn(Salen) on the CAS composition. We found that the inclusion of 4dxy orbital plays an important role in stabilizing the singlet state at the DMRG-CASSCF level via double-shell effect. However, by including dynamic correlation, the ground state was found to be triplet regardless of the size of the basis set or the composition of CAS, which is in agreement with previous findings by canonical DMRG-TCCSD in smaller basis.

Abstract
The recently proposed approach to multireference dynamic correlation energy based on the adiabatic connection (AC) is extended to an arbitrary spin symmetry of the reference state. We show that both the spin-free AC approach and its computationally inexpensive approximation, AC0, when combined with a complete active space wave function, constitute viable alternatives to the perturbation-based and density-functional-based multiconfiguration methods. In particular, the AC0 approach, thanks to its favorable scaling with the system size and the size of the active space, allows for treating larger systems than its perturbation-based counterparts while maintaining comparable accuracy. We show the method's robustness on illustrative chemical systems, including the elusive tetramethyleneethane (TME) diradical, potential energy surfaces of which present a challenge to most computational approaches. For the latter system, AC0 outperforms other methods, staying in close agreement with the full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo benchmark. A careful analysis of the contributions to the correlation energy of TME's lowest singlet and triplet states reveals the subtle interplay of the dynamic and static correlation as the key to understanding the shape of the diradical's potential energy surfaces.

Abstract
In this article we report an implementation of the perturbative triples correction to Mukherjee's state-specific multireference coupled cluster method based on the domain-based pair natural orbital approach (DLPNO-MkCC). We tested the performance of DLPNO-MkCCSD(T) in calculations involving tetramethyleneethane and isomers of naphthynes. These tests show that more than 97% of triples energy was recovered with respect to the canonical MkCCSD(T) method, which together with the DLPNO-MkCCSD part accounts for about 99.70-99.85% of the total correlation energy. The applicability of the method was demonstrated on calculations of singlet-triplet gaps for several large systems: triangulene, dynemicin A, and a beryllium complex.

Abstract
Current model Hamiltonians and ab initio many-body quantum treatments of π-conjugated polyradicals formed from hydrocarbons produce divergent results because of numerical complexity and large size of the basis-function set used. We propose an alternative, three-term Hamiltonian, to describe these various polyradicals that simplifies considerably the computational cost while providing a physical interpretation for all three terms and a high degree of model universality. The essential feature of this Hamiltonian is a term, not present in previous models, describing the three-sited through-bond interaction that governs the noninteracting spin-up and spin-down sectors. A computation of the lowest energy gaps and spin configurations for the smaller polyradicals demonstrates the efficacy of the model and its potential in applications in revealing electrical conductivity and ferromagnetism of the more complicated substituted polyradicals.

Abstract
Thermal decomposition of hexachlorocyclopentadiene (HCCP) has been studied in inert gas and under oxidative conditions in a silica flow reactor at a residence time of 5.0 s between 690 and 923 K and 1 atm pressure. Pyrolysis was initiated by Cl bond fission to form pentachlorocyclopentadienyl radical; two such radicals then combined to undergo a series of intramolecular rearrangements and Cl fissions, producing principally octachloronaphthalene (8ClNP) and Cl2. This process has been studied by quantum chemical calculation, and a reaction potential energy surface has been developed. The rate constant of initial Cl atom fission has been calculated by canonical variational transition state theory as k = 1.45 × 1015 exp(-222 ± 9 kJ mol-1/RT) s-1 between 500 and 2000 K. A minimal kinetic model was developed to model the decomposition and major products. Oxidative decomposition was studied in nitrogen with O2 contents of 1, 6, 12, and 20 mol %. Increasing O2 to 6-8% increased the rate of decomposition of HCCP and decreased the yield of 8ClNP. Above 823 K, hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and CO became major products. The oxidative reaction has also been studied quantum chemically. At high O2 content (>∼10%), the rate of decomposition of HCCP declined as did yields of 8ClNP and HCB, but CO yields increased.

Abstract
In this work, we report an extension of our previous development of the universal state-selective (USS) multireference coupled-cluster (MRCC) formalism. It was shown [Brabec et al., J. Chem. Phys. 136, 124102 (2012)] and [Banik et al., J. Chem. Phys. 142, 114106 (2015)] that the USS(2) approach significantly improves the accuracy of Brillouin-Wigner and Mukherjee MRCC formulations, however, the numerical and storage costs associated with calculating highly excited intermediates pose a significant challenge, which can restrict the applicability of the USS(2) method. Therefore, we introduce a perturbative variant of the USS(2) approach (USS(pt)), which substantially reduces numerical overhead of the full USS(2) correction while preserving its accuracy. Since the new USS(pt) implementation calculates the triple and quadruple projections in on-the-fly manner, the memory bottleneck associated with the need of storing expensive recursive intermediates is entirely eliminated. On the example of several benchmark systems, we demonstrate accuracies of USS(pt) and USS(2) approaches and their efficiency in describing quasidegenerate electronic states. It is also shown that the USS(pt) method significantly alleviates problems associated with the lack of invariance of MRCC theories upon the rotation of active orbitals.

Abstract
![]()
The
penta-2,4-dieniminium cation (PSB3) displays similar ground
state and first excited state potential energy features as those of
the retinal protonated Schiff base (RPSB) chromophore in rhodopsin.
Recently, PSB3 has been used to benchmark several electronic structure
methods, including highly correlated multireference wave function
approaches, highlighting the necessity to accurately describe the
electronic correlation in order to obtain reliable properties even
along the ground state (thermal) isomerization paths. In this work,
we apply two quantum Monte Carlo approaches, the variational Monte
Carlo and the lattice regularized diffusion Monte Carlo, to study
the energetics and electronic properties of PSB3 along representative
minimum energy paths and scans related to its thermal cis–trans isomerization. Quantum Monte Carlo
is used in combination with the Jastrow antisymmetrized geminal power
ansatz, which guarantees an accurate and balanced description of the
static electronic correlation thanks to the multiconfigurational nature
of the antisymmetrized geminal power term, and of the dynamical correlation,
due to the presence of the Jastrow factor explicitly depending on
electron–electron distances. Along the two ground state isomerization
minimum energy paths of PSB3, CASSCF calculations yield wave functions
having either charge transfer or diradical character in proximity
of the two transition state configurations. Here, we observe that
at the quantum Monte Carlo level of theory, only the transition state
with charge transfer character can be located. The conical intersection,
which becomes highly sloped, is observed only if the path connecting
the two original CASSCF transition states is extended beyond the diradical
one, namely by increasing the bond-length-alternation (BLA). These
findings are in good agreement with the results obtained by MRCISD+Q
calculations, and they demonstrate the importance of having an accurate
description of the static and dynamical correlation when studying
isomerization and transition states of conjugated systems.

Abstract
The present comment formulates some recommendations regarding the use of broken-symmetry Unrestricted Density Functional Theory (UDFT) solutions in those polyradical architectures predicted to be of ground-state singlet character according to Ovchinnikov's rule. It proposes a procedure to identify the number of open shells, to reach the relevant Ms = 0 solution, and to estimate the low-energy spectrum of the states which keeps this number of open shells.

Abstract
Due to the crucial role played by electron correlation, the accurate determination of ground state geometries of π-conjugated molecules is still a challenge for many quantum chemistry methods. Because of the high parallelism of the algorithms and their explicit treatment of electron correlation effects, Quantum Monte Carlo calculations can offer an accurate and reliable description of the electronic states and of the geometries of such systems, competing with traditional quantum chemistry approaches. Here, we report the structural properties of polyacetylene chains H-(C₂H₂)(N)-H up to N = 12 acetylene units, by means of Variational Monte Carlo (VMC) calculations based on the multi-determinant Jastrow Antisymmetrized Geminal Power (JAGP) wave function. This compact ansatz can provide for such systems an accurate description of the dynamical electronic correlation as recently detailed for the 1,3-butadiene molecule [J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2015 11 (2), 508-517]. The calculated Bond Length Alternation (BLA), namely the difference between the single and double carbon bonds, extrapolates, for N → ∞, to a value of 0.0910(7) Å, compatible with the experimental data. An accurate analysis was able to distinguish between the influence of the multi-determinantal AGP expansion and of the Jastrow factor on the geometrical properties of the fragments. Our size-extensive and self-interaction-free results provide new and accurate ab initio references for the structures of the ground state of polyenes.
