Abstract
To date, the general and catalytic α-arylation of cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyls remains elusive. We now report the first Rh-catalyzed α-arylation of cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyls with benzocyclobutenols through a cyclic iodonium ylide strategy. Our strategy represents a good solution for the previously challenging α-arylation of cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyls with sterically demanding aryl partners, which is especially appropriate for structurally unique heteroaromatic 1,3-dicarbonyls. Our approach features mild conditions, readily available starting materials, high yields, excellent functional group-tolerance, and simple operation, providing expedient access toward medically important 2-aryl (hetero)cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyls. The practicality of this approach is demonstrated by the gram-scale synthesis, one-pot synthesis, and numerous downstream transformations.

Abstract
Transition metal-catalyzed annulations of four-membered rings via C-C activation are powerful tools to construct complex fused and bridged ring systems. Despite significant progress in (4+1), (4+2) and (4+4) annulations, the (4+3) annulation remains unexplored. Herein, we develop an asymmetric Rh-catalyzed intramolecular (4+3) annulation of α-arylalkene-tethered benzocyclobutenols for the synthesis of dihydrofuran-annulated dibenzocycloheptanols with two discontinuous chiral carbon centers via a C-C and C-H activation cascade. The reaction features excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivities and 100 % atom economy, and is applicable to late-stage modification of complex molecules.

Abstract
Although transition-metal-catalyzed C-C bond activation has been investigated extensively, C-C bond cleavage manipulated by hydrogen transfer has been unexplored. In this work, we disclose a skeleton reorganization of alkene-tethered benzocyclobutenols through Rh-catalyzed C-C bond cleavage coupled with intra- and intermolecular hydrogen transfer. The reaction pathway was well-tuned by the catalytic systems. As a result, divergent benzofurans bearing 4-β-hydroxy or 4-β-keto moieties were synthesized under pH- and redox-neutral conditions.

Abstract
This article reviews synthetic transformations involving cleavage of a carbon-carbon bond of a four-membered ring, with a particular focus on the examples reported during the period from 2011 to the end of 2019. Most significant is the progress of catalytic reactions involving oxidative addition of carbon-carbon bonds onto transition metals or β-carbon elimination of transition metal alkoxides. When they are looked at from synthetic perspectives, they offer unique and efficient methods to build complex natural products and structures that are difficult to construct by conventional methods. On the other hand, β-scission of radical intermediates has also attracted increasing attention as an alternative elementary step to cleave carbon-carbon bonds. Its site-selectivity is often complementary to that of transition metal-catalyzed reactions. In addition, Lewis acid-mediated and thermally induced ring-opening of cyclobutanone derivatives has garnered renewed attention. On the whole, these examples demonstrate unique synthetic potentials of structurally strained four-membered ring compounds for the construction of organic skeletons.

Density functional theory (DFT) methods including LC-ωPBE, CAM-B3LYP, B3LYP, and B3LYP-D3, combined with double Zeta all-electron DZVP basis set, have been employed to conduct computational investigations on nickel-mediated reaction of o-carboranylzirconacycle, n-hexene, and 2-bromophenyltrimethylsilylacetylene in toluene solution. A multistep mechanism leading to the C,C,B-substituted carborane-fused tricyclics, including (1) sequential insertion of alkene and alkyne into Ni–C bonds; (2) double 1,2-migration of the TMS group; (3) B–H activation assisted by Cs2CO3 additive; and (4) reduction cage B–C (sp2) coupling, was proposed. Among these steps, the B–H activation of o-carborane was located as rate-determining step (RDS). With assistance of Cs2CO3 additive (replaced by K2CO3 in simulation), the RDS free-energy barrier at PCM-LC-ωPBE/DZVP level was calculated to be 23.1–23.9 kcal·mol−1, transferring to a half-life of 3.9–15.1 h at 298 K. The predicted half-life coincides well with 80% experimental yields of C,C,B-substituted carborane-fused tricyclics after 12 h. Kinetic data obtained by employing LC-ωPBE method also reproduced the experimental diastereoselective ratio well. Various B–H activation pathways with and without Cs2CO3 additive were taken into consideration, which illustrates Cs2CO3 as an essential guarantee for smooth occurrence of this reaction at room temperature.

Abstract
The solvothermal cycloreversion and in situ oxidation of 1,2,3,4-tetra(pyridin-4-yl)cyclobutane (tpcb) within [CuCN] n-based MOFs were investigated. The radical mechanism for the cycloreversion of tpcb ligands was supported by capturing a 1,3-butadiene species 1,2,3,4-tetra(4-pyridyl)-1,3-butadiene (tpyb) into {[Cu18(μ-CN)18(tpcb)4(tpyb)2]·H2O} n in the presence of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO). Without TEMPO, a furan-based ligand 2,3,4,5-tetra(4-pyridyl)furan (tpyf) was generated within {[Cu4(μ-CN)4(tpyf)]·4MeCN} n via the C-C cleavage, followed by in situ oxidation in acidic condition.

Abstract
A chemoselective ring-opening protocol of the formal [2+2] cycloadducts of 3-triflyloxyarynes was developed to generate 2,3-aryne intermediate via Grob fragmentation. A variety of 1,3-di- and 1,2,3-trisubstituted arenes could be readily accessed through this [2+2] cycloaddition-2,3-aryne formation sequence. The regioselectivity in these transformations originates from the steric repulsion of the aliphatic chain.
