Heterobimetallic Porphyrin Complexes Displaying Triple Dynamics: Coupled Metal Motions Controlled by Constitutional Evolution

Functional Myoglobin Model Composed of a Strapped Porphyrin/Cyclodextrin Supramolecular Complex with an Overhanging COOH That Increases O2/CO Binding Selectivity in Aqueous Solution

A water-soluble strapped iron(III)tetraarylporphyrin (Fe^IIIPor-1) bearing two propylpyridinium groups at the side chains and a carboxylic acid group at the overhanging position of the strap was synthesized to mimic the function of myoglobin with the distal polar functionality in aqueous solution. Fe^IIIPor-1 forms a stable 1:1 inclusion complex with a per-O-methylated β-cyclodextrin dimer having a pyridine linker (Py3OCD), providing a hydrophobic environment and a proximal fifth ligand to stabilize the O₂-complex. The ferrous complex (Fe^IIPorCD-1) binds both O₂ and CO in aqueous solution. The O₂ and CO binding affinities (P_1/2^O2 and P_1/2^CO) and half-life time (t_1/2) of the O₂ complex of Fe^IIPorCD-1 are 6.3 and 0.021 Torr, and 7 h, respectively, at pH 7 and 25 °C. The control compound without the strap structure (Fe^IIPorCD-2) has similar oxygen binding characteristics (P_1/2^O2 = 8.0 Torr), but much higher CO binding affinity (P_1/2^CO = 3.8 × 10^-4 Torr), and longer t_1/2 (30 h). The O₂ and CO kinetics indicate that the strapped structure in Fe^IIPorCD-1 inhibits the entrance of these gaseous ligands into the iron(II) center, as evidenced by lower k_on^O2 and k_on^CO values. Interestingly, the CO complex of Fe^IIPorCD-1 is significantly destabilized (relatively larger k_off^CO), while the k_off^O2 value is much smaller than that of Fe^IIPorCD-2, resulting in significantly increased O₂/CO selectivity (reduced M value, where M = P_1/2^O2/P_1/2^CO = 320) in Fe^IIPorCD-1 compared to Fe^IIPorCD-2 (M = 21000).

Chiral Bifunctional Metalloporphyrin Catalysts for Kinetic Resolution of Epoxides with Carbon Dioxide

Chiral binaphthyl-strapped Zn(II) porphyrins with triazolium halide units were synthesized as bifunctional catalysts for kinetic resolution of epoxides with CO₂. Several catalysts were screened by changing the linker length and nucleophilic counteranions, and the optimized catalyst accelerated the enantioselective reaction at ambient temperature to produce optically active cyclic carbonates and epoxides.

HgII -Mediated TlI -to-TlIII Oxidation in Dynamic PbII /Tl Porphyrin Complexes

Compared with their purely organic counterparts, molecular switches that are based on metal ion translocations have been underexplored, and more particularly, it remains challenging to control the translocation of several particles in multisite receptors. Recently, bimetallic complexes that undergo double translocation processes have been developed with bis-strapped porphyrin ligands. To implement a redox control for these systems, we have investigated the formation of heterobimetallic lead/thallium complexes, with thallium in the +I and +III oxidation states. Two different complexes were characterized: 1) a Pb^II /Tl^I complex, in which both metal ions interact with the N-core on its different sides, and 2) a Pb^II /Tl^III complex with Tl^III selectively bound to the N-core and Pb^II selectively bound to the strap opposite to Tl^III . These two complexes undergo interconversion between their two degenerate forms (same coordination of the metal ions but on opposite sides) by different intra or intermolecular translocation pathways. In addition, conversion of the Pb^II /Tl^I complex into its Pb^II /Tl^III counterpart was achieved by addition of a stoichiometric amount of Hg^II salt as a sacrificial electron acceptor. These results further contribute to the elaboration of devices that feature redox-controlled compartmentalized double translocations.

We report the solid-state structure of an unexpected trinuclear zinc dimeric porphyrin complex resulting of zinc insertion into a single strap porphyrin. The latter bears an overhanging carboxylic acid which usually interacts with metal cations either in out-of-plane (OOP) or in hanging-atop (HAT) coordination mode by changing its location above the porphyrin coordination site. However, in the present studies, the overhanging carboxylic group acts as a bidentate ligand and binds the OOP-bound zinc cation together with another zinc cation bridging two porphyrin units.

β,β'-Bipyrrole Fusion-Driven cis-Bimetallic Complexation in Isomeric Porphyrin

An unprecedented cis-bimetallic complex of dinaphthoporphycene (DNP), namely [Pd2(μ-DNP)(μ-OAc)2], is reported. The most striking feature of this complex is that two palladiums coordinate to the macrocycle on the same side and are closely held together (Pd-Pd: 2.67 Å) by two bridging acetate ligands exhibiting significant metal-metal bonding interaction (bond order 0.18 evaluated by NBO analysis). Interestingly, replacing acetate with acetylacetonate (acac) could stabilize an unusual mono-palladium complex of DNP, where Pd coordinates unsymmetrically to two ring Ns above the macrocyclic plane, as well as coordinating with two Os of the acac ligand. Remarkably, the rigid DNP core displays enhanced complexation induced aromaticity (as per NICS and HOMA analysis), despite undergoing severe core deformation during complexation with metal ion(s) as noticed from their solid-state structures.

Sunlight-driven formation and dissociation of a dynamic mixed-valence thallium(III)/thallium(I) porphyrin complex

Inspired by a Newton's cradle device and interested in the development of redox-controllable bimetallic molecular switches, a mixed-valence thallium(III)/thallium(I) bis-strap porphyrin complex, with Tl(III) bound out of the plane of the N core and Tl(I) hung to a strap on the opposite side, was formed by the addition of TlOAc to the free base and exposure to indirect sunlight. In this process, oxygen photosensitization by the porphyrin allows the oxidation of Tl(I) to Tl(III). The bimetallic complex is dynamic as the metals exchange their positions symmetrically to the porphyrin plane with Tl(III) funneling through the macrocycle. Further exposure of the complex to direct sunlight leads to thallium dissociation and to total recovery of the free base. Hence, the porphyrin plays a key role at all stages of the cycle of the complex: It hosts two metal ions, and by absorbing light, it allows the formation and dissociation of Tl(III). These results constitute the basis for the further design of innovative light-driven bimetallic molecular devices.
