New insights into electronic and geometric effects in the enhanced photoelectrooxidation of ethanol Using ZnO nanorod/ultrathin Au nanowire hybrids

Enhancing the Photocatalytic Activity of Halide Perovskite Cesium Bismuth Bromide/Hydrogen Titanate Heterostructures for Benzyl Alcohol Oxidation

Halide perovskite Cs3Bi2Br9 (CBB) has excellent potential in photocatalysis due to its promising light-harvesting properties. However, its photocatalytic performance might be limited due to the unfavorable charge carrier migration and water-induced properties, which limit the stability and photocatalytic performance. Therefore, we address this constraint in this work by synthesizing a stable halide perovskite heterojunction by introducing hydrogen titanate nanosheets (H2Ti3O7-NS, HTiO-NS). Optimizing the weight % (wt%) of CBB enables synthesizing the optimal CBB/HTiO-NS, CBHTNS heterostructure. The detailed morphology and structure characterization proved that the cubic shape of CBB is anchored on the HTiO-NS surface. The 30 wt% CBB/HTiO-NS-30 (CBHTNS-30) heterojunction showed the highest BnOH photooxidation performance with 98% conversion and 75% benzoic acid (BzA) selectivity at 2 h under blue light irradiation. Detailed optical and photoelectrochemical characterization showed that the incorporating CBB and HTiO-NS widened the range of the visible-light response and improved the ability to separate the photo-induced charge carriers. The presence of HTiO-NS has increased the oxidative properties, possibly by charge separation in the heterojunction, which facilitated the generation of superoxide and hydroxyl radicals. A possible reaction pathway for the photocatalytic oxidation of BnOH to BzH and BzA was also suggested. Furthermore, through scavenger experiments, we found that the photogenerated h+, e- and •O2- play an essential role in the BnOH photooxidation, while the •OH have a minor effect on the reaction. This work may provide a strategy for using HTiO-NS-based photocatalyst to enhance the charge carrier migration and photocatalytic performance of CBB.

Metal organic framework-derived transition metal-doped CoSx nanocage for enhanced visible light-assisted methanol electrocatalytic oxidation

Designing noble metal-free anode catalysts for visible light-assisted direct methanol fuel cells still remains a significant challenge. In this study, combining the photocatalytic and electrocatalytic properties of CoSx, a visible light-assisted methanol electrocatalytic oxidation strategy was provided. Doping engineering was employed to adjust the electronic structure of CoSx and improve their photoassisted methanol electrocatalytic oxidation activity. Using ZIF-67 as precursor, transition metal-doped CoSx (M-CoSx, M = Zn, Cu, Ni, and Cd) nanocage was synthesized by cation exchange and L-cysteine-controlled etching. Cd doping not only widens the light adsorption to the visible region but also enhances the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The electrochemical and photochemical results indicated that the strong oxidative photogenerated hole, OH˙, and O2˙- are beneficial for methanol electrocatalytic oxidation. The synergistic electrocatalytic and photocatalytic effect will be a practical strategy for improving the methanol electrocatalytic oxidation activity of noble metal-free semiconductor catalysts.

Ethanol Oxidation via 12-Electron Pathway on Spiky Au@AuPd Nanoparticles Assisted by Near-Infrared Light

In this work, ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) via 12-electron (C1-12e) pathway on spiky Au@AuPd nanoparticles (NPs) with ultrathin AuPd alloy shells is achieved in alkaline media with the assistance of the near-infrared (NIR) light. It is found that OH radicals can be produced from the OH_ads species adsorbed on the surfaces of Pd atoms led by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of spiky Au@AuPd NPs under the irradiation of NIR light. Moreover, OH radicals play the key role for the achievement of EOR proceeded by the desirable C1-12e pathway because OH radicals can directly break the C-C bonds of ethanol. Accordingly, the electrocatalytic performance of spiky Au@AuPd NPs toward EOR under NIR light is greatly improved. For instance, their mass activity can be up to 33.2 A mg_pd ^-1 in the 0.5 m KOH solution containing 0.5 m ethanol, which is about 158 times higher than that of commercial Pd/C catalysts (0.21 A mg_pd ^-1 ) and is better than those of the state-of-the-art Pd-based catalysts reported in literature thus far, to the best of our knowledge. Moreover, their highest mass activity can be further improved to 118.3 A mg_pd ^-1 in the 1.5 m KOH solution containing 1.25 m ethanol.

Carbon quantum dots sensitized 2D/2D carbon nitride nanosheets/bismuth tungstate for visible light photocatalytic degradation norfloxacin

A novel carbon quantum dots (CQDs) sensitized 2D/2D carbon nitride nanosheets and bismuth tungstate composite (CQD-CNs/BWO) was successfully prepared via the facile hydrothermal method and used for the photocatalytic degradation of norfloxacin (NOR). During 120 min irradiation test, CQD-CNs/BWO exhibited 9 and 1.76 times higher photocatalytic activity than CNs and BWO, respectively. CQDs and constructed 2D/2D structure could not only improve the light harvesting but also promote the generation and separation of electron-holes. The existing inorganic ions in solution (e.g. bicarbonate ions, chlorine ions, and sulfate ions) could inhibit NOR degradation. Based on the electron spin resonance and free radicals inhibition tests, the holes and superoxide radicals rather than hydroxyl radicals were the main reactive species. The intermediates and possible pathways were proposed, and the antibacterial activity of the treated solution after the reaction was evaluated via bacteriostatic tests. The prepared composite material with high photocatalytic activity and stability is potentially effective for the degradation of antibiotics in wastewater.

Mechanistic Insights for Photoelectrochemical Ethanol Oxidation on Black Gold Decorated Monoclinic Zirconia

Surface decoration of metal oxides by metals for enhancing their electrocatalytic properties for organic conversions has attracted a lot of researchers' interest due to their high abundancy, inexpensiveness, and high stability. In the present work, a process for the synthesis of black gold (BG) using a citrate assisted chemical route and m-ZrO₂ by a hydrothermal method at 200 °C has been developed. Further, different concentrations of black gold are being used to decorate the surface of zirconia by exploitation of surface potential of zirconia and gold surfaces. The catalyst having 6 mol % concentration of black gold shows excellent electrocatalytic activity for ethanol oxidation with low oxidation peak potential (1.17 V) and high peak current density (8.54 mA cm^-2). The current density ratio (j_f/j_b) is also high (2.54) for this catalyst indicating its high tolerance toward poisoning by intermediate species generated during the catalytic cycle. The enhanced electrocatalytic activity can be attributed to the high tolerance of gold toward CO poisoning and high stability of the ZrO₂ support. The black gold decorated zirconia catalyst showed enhanced activity during photoelectrochemical studies when the entire spectrum of light falls on the catalyst. Ultrafast transient studies demonstrated plasmonic excitation of metallic free electrons and subsequent charge separation in the black gold-ZrO₂ heterointerface as the key factor for enhanced photoelectrocatalytic activity.

Fabrication of single-crystalline gold nanowires on cellulose nanofibers

Cellulose nanofibers (CNF) are promising nanomaterials for functional inks and printed sensors, although the potential applications are currently limited by the available functionalization methods. This work outlines a convenient method to grow a novel and highly conductive network of single-crystalline gold nanowires (AuNW) on CNF for use in conductive inks and printed sensors. The CNF are able to reduce Au (III) precursors to Au (0) monomers and generate nucleation sites for the subsequent monomer-by-monomer growth of Au nanocrystals; sodium citrate is used to control the reduction kinetics and the crystal growth. The growth of these AuNW/CNF materials is a three-step process of redox reaction, isotropic nucleation and anisotropic crystallization: the morphology and crystal structure of Au nanocrystals on CNF can be controlled by adjusting the reaction temperature and concentrations of citrate and CNF. The AuNW/CNF materials obtained have been formulated into highly conductive and atmospherically stable inks for use in either directly writing or screen printing. We have demonstrated AuNW/CNF-printed sensors with highly controllable electrical conductivity as well as excellent stability against rinsing and immersion by water and ethanol.

Synergetic effects of defects and acid sites of 2D-ZnO photocatalysts on the photocatalytic performance

Regulation of defects and surface acidic sites of photocatalysts is an efficient approach to improve the photocatalytic activity. Ultrathin 2D-ZnO photocatalysts were prepared to uncover the synergetic effects of defects and surface acidic sites on the photocatalytic activity. The reaction constant for photocatalytic degradation of MB upon ZnO-S is 2.26, 2.82, 12.2 times higher than that of SH-500, SO-500, and ZnO-R, respectively. The results revealed that the surface defects, hydroxyl group and chemisorbed water played pivotal roles in the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Although the limited improvement of visible absorption was achieved after introduction of oxygen vacancy (V_O), the overall photocatalytic activity decreased due to the reduced ROS production capacity shown by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Hydroxyl radical is the key ROS in degradation of organics, and electron contributes a little bigger than hole in the generation of hydroxyl radical. Importantly, the decrease in surface acidic sites resulted in the decreased photocatalytic activity, proven by the dynamics of photoinduced carriers. This study reveals that the improved photocatalytic activity of 2D-ZnO photocatalysts can be attributed to the synergetic effects of surface defects and acidic sites rather than the enhanced visible absorption resulted from the V_O introduction.

Nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots-decorated 2D graphitic carbon nitride as a promising photocatalyst for environmental remediation: A study on the importance of hybridization approach

Growing concerns of water pollution by dye pollutants from the textile industry has led to vast research interest to find green solutions to address this issue. In recent years, heterogeneous photocatalysis has harvested tremendous attention from researchers due to its powerful potential applications in tackling many important energy and environmental challenges at a global level. To fully utilise the broad spectrum of solar energy has been a common aim in the photocatalyst industry. This study focuses on the development of an efficient, highly thermal and chemical stable, environmentally friendly and metal-free graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) to overcome the problem of fast charge recombination which hinders photocatalytic performances. Nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (NCQDs) known for its high electronic and optical functionality properties is believed to achieve photocatalytic enhancement by efficient charge separation through forming heterogeneous interfaces. Hence, the current work focuses on the hybridisation of NCQDs and g-C₃N₄ to produce a composite photocatalyst for methylene blue (MB) degradation under LED light irradiation. The optimal hybridisation method and the mass loading required for maximum attainable MB degradation were systematically investigated. The optimum photocatalyst, 1 wt% NCQD/g-C₃N₄ composite was shown to exhibit a 2.6-fold increase in photocatalytic activity over bare g-C₃N₄. Moreover, the optimum sample displayed excellent stability and durability after three consecutive degradation cycles, retaining 91.2% of its original efficiency. Scavenging tests were also performed where reactive species, photon-hole (h⁺) was identified as the primary active species initiating the pollutant degradation mechanism. The findings of this study successfully shed light on the hybridisation methods of NCQDs which improve existing g-C₃N₄ photocatalyst systems for environmental remediation by utilising solar energy.

Plasmonic-enhanced catalytic activity of methanol oxidation on Au-graphene-Cu nanosandwiches

The plasmonic-enhanced catalytic activity of methanol oxidation on Au-based catalysts provides a promising strategy for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) to avoid the CO poisoning of traditional Pt-based catalysts. However, the effect of surface plasmon resonance on the light-enhanced methanol oxidation activity of Au or Au-based catalysts has not been fully understood. The mechanism by which hot plasmonic carriers participate in the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) has not been elucidated. Herein, Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) are loaded on a support of single-layer graphene-Cu contacts (SG/Cu) to construct a nanosandwich structure of a Au-graphene-Cu catalytic electrode (Au-n/SG/Cu). The Au-6T/SG/Cu catalytic electrode exhibits an MOR catalytic activity of approximately 288 μA μg-1 under simulated solar light irradiation, which is approximately 1.7 times higher than that without irradiation. The chemisorption capacity of OH- anions is enhanced on the Au-6T/SG/Cu catalytic electrode compared with the pure Au NP surface. The adsorbed OH- anions are oxidised into ˙OH radicals by the trapped positive holes on the Au NP surface. These OH radicals possessed a high oxidation capacity for the direct oxidation of HCOO- intermediates and promoted the complete methanol oxidation on Au NPs, which is beneficial for improving the fuel efficiency of DMFCs.

Ultrathin Au-Alloy Nanowires at the Liquid-Liquid Interface

Ultrathin bimetallic nanowires are of importance and interest for applications in electronic devices such as sensors and heterogeneous catalysts. In this work, we have designed a new, highly reproducible and generalized wet chemical method to synthesize uniform and monodispersed Au-based alloy (AuCu, AuPd, and AuPt) nanowires with tunable composition using microwave-assisted reduction at the liquid-liquid interface. These ultrathin alloy nanowires are below 4 nm in diameter and about 2 μm long. Detailed microstructural characterization shows that the wires have an face centred cubic (FCC) crystal structure, and they have low-energy twin-boundary and stacking-fault defects along the growth direction. The wires exhibit remarkable thermal and mechanical stability that is critical for important applications. The alloy wires exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation in an alkaline medium.

Facile Aqueous-Phase Synthesis of the PtAu/Bi2O3 Hybrid Catalyst for Efficient Electro-Oxidation of Ethanol

In this work, we present a facile aqueous-phase synthesis of a hybrid catalyst consisting of PtAu alloy supported on Bi₂O₃ microspheres. Multistep reduction of HAuCl₄ and K₂PtCl₄ salts on Bi₂O₃ and subsequent annealing lead to the formation of this hybrid catalyst. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of using Bi₂O₃ as a catalyst support in fuel cell applications. The material was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction and various microscopic techniques. This composite showed remarkable activity as well as stability toward the electro-oxidation of ethanol in comparison to commercially available Pt/C. The order of the reactivity was found to be commercial Pt/C (50.4 mA/m²mg_Pt^-1) < Pt/Bi₂O₃(10) (108 mA/m²mg_Pt^-1) < PtAu/Bi₂O₃(10) (459 mA/m²mg_Pt^-1). The enhancement in the activity can be explained through cooperative effects, namely, ligand effects of gold and Bi₂O₃ support, which helps in removing carbon monoxide molecules to avoid the poisoning of the Pt active sites.

Assembly of Ultrathin Gold Nanowires: From Polymer Analogue to Colloidal Block

Ultrathin nanowires (NWs) are considered to be ideal building blocks for the assembly of complex nanostructures toward future nanodevices. The polymer/particle duality of ultrathin NWs plays an important role in the study of solution phase self-assembly behavior of ultrathin NWs; yet it has not been fully exploited. Herein, we demonstrate the effects of the polymer/particle duality of ultrathin NWs on the morphologies of assembled complex nanostructures. The length of ultrathin AuNWs directly correlates with the flexibility of NWs and affects the polymer-like assembly of NWs, while the concentration of surfactants determines interfacial tension and ligand-solvent interactions and affects both polymer-like and colloidal assembly of NWs. By fine-tuning these two factors, ultrathin AuNWs can swing between "soft" and "hard" building blocks, and highly uniform nanorings, nanograins, nanobundles, and superlattice-like nanospheres are obtained. The different assembly behavior of long and short NWs can be considered as two components to construct anisotropic complex nanostructures, in analogy with the fabrication of polymer-inorganic nanoparticle hybrid nanostructures. We synthesized anisotropic structures of Au nanodiamond rings and nanonecklaces by the coassembly of polymer-like long NWs with particle-like short NWs or Au nanoparticles. This strategy could potentially be extended to the organization of anisotropic complex nanostructures with other ultrathin NW systems in the future.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements showed abnormal inductive behavior, indicative of surface reactivation. DFT calculations indicate that the origin of the high activity stems from the position of the Au d-band center.

High Efficiency Photoelectrocatalytic Methanol Oxidation on CdS Quantum Dots Sensitized Pt Electrode

A cadmium sulfide quantum dots sensitized Pt (Pt-CdS) composite was synthesized using a solvothermal method and characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The catalytic properties of the as-prepared electrode for methanol oxidation were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry, electrochemical impedance spectrum (EIS) and photocurrent responses. The as-prepared Pt-CdS electrode displayed a significant enhancement in the electrocatalytic activity and stability for methanol oxidation in the presence of visible light irradiation. The synergistic effect of both the electro- and photocatalytic reaction contributes to this enhanced catalytic performance. Our result suggests a new paradigm to construct photoelectrocatalysts with high performance and good stability for direct methanol fuel cells with the assistance of visible-light illumination.

Dual-ligand mediated one-pot self-assembly of Cu/ZnO core/shell structures for enhanced microwave absorption

A facile one-pot method has developed to assemble Cu/ZnO core/shell nanocrystals with different aspect ratios for enhanced microwave absorption. Besides, the one-pot method has shown the appreciable yields and no cumbersome multistep operations.

Carbon Quantum Dots Modified BiOCl Ultrathin Nanosheets with Enhanced Molecular Oxygen Activation Ability for Broad Spectrum Photocatalytic Properties and Mechanism Insight

In this paper, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) modified BiOCl ultrathin nanosheets photocatalyst was synthesized via a facile solvothermal method. The structures, morphologies, optical properties, and photocatalytic properties were investigated in detail. The photocatalytic activity of the obtained CQDs modified BiOCl ultrathin nanosheets photocatalyst was evaluated by the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) and rhodamine B (RhB) under ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared light irradiation. The CQDs/BiOCl materials exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance as compared with pure BiOCl and the 5 wt % CQDs/BiOCl materials displayed the best performance, which showed a broad spectrum of photocatalytic degradation activity. The main active species were determined to be hole and O2•- under visible light irradiation by electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis, XPS valence spectra, and free radicals trapping experiments. The crucial role of CQDs for the improved photocatalytic activity was mainly attributed to the superior electron transfer ability, enhanced light harvesting, and boosted catalytic active sites.

Fabrication of SiO2 incorporated ordered mesoporous TiO2 composite films as functional Pt supports for photo-electrocatalytic methanol oxidation

SiO₂ incorporated ordered mesoporous TiO₂ composite films were fabricated as an active support for methanol oxidation and excellent photoelectrocatalytic activity was obtained, showing great potential application prospects.
