A discrete amphiphilic organoplatinum(II) metallacycle with tunable lower critical solution temperature behavior

A sequential light-harvesting system with thermosensitive colorimetric emission in both aqueous solution and hydrogel

Inspired by natural photosynthetic systems that feature both sequential energy transfer and temperature response, we herein report an artificial thermosensitive sequential light-harvesting system (LHS) based on an amphiphilic molecule TPEO. It self-assembles into fluorescent nanoparticles in water and shows tunable LCST behavior. By loading ESY as the first acceptor and NiR as the second acceptor into the nanoparticles, an artificial LHS with two-step FRET was successfully constructed. Interestingly, the system exhibits thermosensitive colorimetric fluorescence in both aqueous solution and hydrogel by taking advantage of a combination of LCST and sequential FRET.

Pathway-Controlled Aqueous Supramolecular Polymerization via Solvent-Dependent Chain Conformation Effects

Solute-solvent interactions play a critical role in multiple fields, including biology, materials science, and (physical) organic, polymer, and supramolecular chemistry. Within the growing field of supramolecular polymer science, these interactions have been recognized as an important driving force for (entropically driven) intermolecular association, particularly in aqueous media. However, to date, solute-solvent effects remain poorly understood in the context of complex self-assembly energy landscapes and pathway complexity. Herein, we unravel the role of solute-solvent interactions in controlling chain conformation effects, allowing energy landscape modulation and pathway selection in aqueous supramolecular polymerization. To this end, we have designed a series of oligo(phenylene ethynylene) (OPE)-based bolaamphiphilic Pt(II) complexes OPE2-4 bearing solubilizing triethylene glycol (TEG) chains of equal length on both molecule ends, but a different size of the hydrophobic aromatic scaffold. Strikingly, detailed self-assembly studies in aqueous media disclose a different tendency of the TEG chains to fold back and enwrap the hydrophobic molecular component depending on both the size of the core and the volume fraction of the co-solvent (THF). The relatively small hydrophobic component of OPE2 can be readily shielded by the TEG chains, leading to only one aggregation pathway. In contrast, the decreased capability of the TEG chains to effectively shield larger hydrophobic cores (OPE3 and OPE4) enables different types of solvent quality-dependent conformations (extended, partly back-folded and back-folded), which in turn induce various controllable aggregation pathways with distinct morphologies and mechanisms. Our results shed light on previously underappreciated solvent-dependent chain conformation effects and their role in governing pathway complexity in aqueous media.

Polyacrylamide-Based Block Copolymer Bearing Pyridine Groups Shows Unexpected Salt-Induced LCST Behavior

Thermal-responsive block copolymers are a special type of macromolecule that exhibit a wide range of applications in various fields. In this contribution, we report a new type of polyacrylamide-based block copolymer bearing pyridine groups of polyethylene glycol-block-poly(N-(2-methylpyridine)-acrylamide; Px) that display distinct salt-induced lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior. Unexpectedly, the phase-transition mechanism of the salt-induced LCST behavior of Px block copolymers is different from that of the reported LCST-featured analogues. Moreover, their thermo-responsive behavior can be significantly regulated by several parameters such as salt species and concentration, urea, polymerization degree, polymer concentration and pH values. This unique thermal behavior of pyridine-containing block copolymers provides a new avenue for the fabrication of smart polymer materials with potential applications in biomedicine.

Fluorescent Nanoassemblies in Water Exhibiting Tunable LCST Behavior and Responsive Light Harvesting Ability

Responsive fluorescent nanomaterials have been received considerable attention in recent years. In this work, a bola-type amphiphilic molecule, CSO, was synthesized which contains a hydrophobic cyanostilbene core and hydrophilic oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) coils at both sides. The cyanostilbene group is aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active, while the OEG coils are thermo-responsive. As a result, the CSO molecules can self-assemble into blue-fluorescent nanoassemblies with lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior in aqueous media. It is noteworthy that the LCST behavior can be reversibly regulated with changes in concentration and the introduction of K⁺ . Intriguingly, fluorescence of CSO assembly shows a blue-shift upon heating. Finally, by employing CSO as a light capturing antenna and energy donor, an artificial light harvesting system with tunable emission and thermo-responsive characteristics was fabricated. This study not only demonstrates an integrated approach to create responsive fluorescent nanomaterials, but also shows great potential for producing luminescent materials and mimicking photosynthesis in nature.

Self-assembled Fluorescent Nanoparticles with Tunable LCST Behavior in Water

The development of stimuli-responsive fluorescent materials in water based on organic molecule has drawn significant interest. Herein, we designed and synthesized an amphiphilic molecule M containing a fixed tetraphenylethylene moiety (FTPE) as hydrophobic part and tri(ethylene glycol) (TEG) chains as hydrophilic part. Notably, the FTPE moiety is aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active, while the TEG chains are thermo-responsive. M can self-assemble into fluorescent nanoparticles (NPs) in water, which showed lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior. Moreover, its clouding point can be reversibly tuned upon the concentration variation. Interestingly, the NPs can be acted as a fluorescence thermometer in aqueous media owing to their unique AIE and LCST behaviors. Our work herein not only provides an integration strategy to construct stimuli-responsive fluorescent materials but also shows great potential in biological applications including bioimaging and biosensors.

Hybrid Macrocyclic Polymers: Self-Assembly Containing Cucurbit[m]uril-pillar[n]arene

Supramolecular self-assembly by hybrid macrocycles containing both cucurbit[m]uril (CB[m]) and pillar[n]arene was discussed and summarized in this review. Due to different solubility, diverse-sized cavities, and various driving forces in recognizing guests, the role of CB[m] and pillar[n]arene in such hybrid macrocyclic systems could switch between competitor in capturing specialized guests, and cooperator for building advanced hybridized macrocycles, by controlling their characteristics in host–guest inclusions. Furthermore, both CB[m] and pillar[n]arene were employed for fabricating advanced supramolecular self-assemblies such as mechanically interlocked molecules and supramolecular polymers. In those self-assemblies, CB[m] and pillar[n]arene played significant roles in, e.g., microreactor for catalyzing particular reactions to bridge different small pieces together, molecular “joint” to connect different monomers into larger assemblies, and “stabilizer” in accommodating the guest molecules to adopt a favorite structure geometry ready for assembling.

Re-entrant Photoinduced Morphological Transformation and Temperature-Dependent Kinetic Products of a Rectangular Amphiphilic Diarylethene Assembly

An amphiphilic rectangular-shaped photochromic diarylethene bearing two hydrophobic alkyl chains and two hydrophilic tri(ethylene glycol) chains was synthesized, and its photoinduced morphological transformation in water was investigated. Two unexpected phenomena were revealed in the course of the experiments: a re-entrant photoinduced macroscopic morphological transformation and temperature-dependent kinetic products of supramolecular assembly. When the pure closed-ring isomer was dispersed in water, a re-entrant photoinduced morphological transformation, that is, a photoinduced transition from the hydrated phase to the dehydrated phase and then back to the hydrated phase, was observed by optical microscopy upon irradiation with green light at 20 °C; this was interpreted by the V-shaped phase diagram of the LCST transition. The aqueous assembly of the pure closed-ring isomer was controlled by changing the temperature; specifically, rapid cooling to 15 and 5 °C gave J and H aggregates, respectively, as the kinetic products. The thermodynamic product at both temperatures was a mixture of mostly H aggregate with a small amount of J aggregate. This behavior was rationalized by the temperature-dependent potential energy surface of the supramolecular assembly.

Platinum(II) Metallatriangle: Construction, Coassembly with Polypeptide, and Application in Combined Cancer Photodynamic and Chemotherapy

The development of the supramolecular coordination complex with different shapes and dimensionalities lays the basis for its application in different areas. In this study, a porphyrin-based 3D organo-Pt(II) metallatriangle (MTA) was fabricated through the reported method termed as "coordination driven self-assembly". ³¹P NMR, ¹H NMR, HR-MS, and theoretical calculation were employed to characterize the resultant MTA fully. Furthermore, the fabricated nanocomposite through coassembly of MTA and an amphiphilic polypeptide (PEG-PPT) could generate singlet oxygen (¹O₂) under the NIR irradiation and release a Pt drug under a low-pH microenvironment. ¹O₂ and the Pt drug can both damage the cancer cells, which improves the efficiency of cancer therapies. The fabrication of a Pt-porphyrin metallatriangle expands the topological structures, and the Pt-porphyrin metallatriangle can be applied to the combined cancer therapies. Moreover, various stimuli-responsive groups can be modified to the triangle, so a new method is created to develop high-performance biosupramolecular materials.

Selenium-containing heterodimeric crown ether acting as an unconventional multi-responsive amphiphile in water

A new heterodimeric crown amphiphile was fabricated, wherein the oxacrown and selencrown ethers provided the desired molecular framework for hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity, respectively. From an integrated perspective, the developed amphiphile possesses features of crown ethers, amines, and selenium-containing species, and its assembly in water can be responsive to diverse chemical effectors-H2O2 and CO2 in a switchable ON/OFF mode to achieve controlled release. It is the first case wherein the applications of cyclic polyethers with different solubilities drives the self-assembly in an aqueous medium.

Designing a highly stable coordination-driven metallacycle for imaging-guided photodynamic cancer theranostics

Coordination-driven self-assembly features good predictability and directionality in the construction of discrete metallacycles and metallacages with well-defined sizes and shapes, but their medicinal application has been limited by their low stability and solubility. Herein, we have designed and synthesized a highly stable coordination-driven metallacycle with desired functionality derived from a perylene-diimide ligand via a spontaneous deprotonation self-assembly process. Brilliant chemical stability and singlet oxygen production ability of this emissive octanuclear organopalladium macrocycle make it a good candidate toward biological studies. After cellular uptake by endocytosis, the metallacycle exhibits potent fluorescence cell imaging properties and cancer photodynamic therapeutic ability through enhancing ROS production, with high biocompatibility and safety. This study not only provides a rational design strategy for highly stable luminescent organopalladium metallacycles, but also sheds light on their application in imaging-guided photodynamic cancer therapy.

A highly-luminescent metallacycle with chemical stability and singlet oxygen production ability were obtained by a spontaneous deprotonation self-assembly process, which exhibits application potential in imaging-guided photodynamic cancer therapy.

pH-Responsive Vesicle Formation by PEGylated Cholesterol Derivatives: Physicochemical Characterization, Stability, Encapsulation, and Release Study

PEGylated vesicles are known to serve as blood-persistent drug-delivery systems (DDSs) with potential applications in intravenous drug administration. pH-responsive PEGylated vesicles are also among the most promising stimuli-responsive carriers for drug delivery and controlled release for cancer chemotherapy. Herein, we report design and synthesis of two novel pH-responsive amphiphiles by coupling a cholesterol (Chol) and poly(ethylene glycol) chain with l-cysteine amino acid through hydrolysable linkages. The objective of this work is to physicochemically characterize the nanoaggregates of the amphiphiles under different experimental conditions. We have demonstrated spontaneous vesicle formation by the amphiphiles in water using various spectroscopic, calorimetric, and microscopic techniques. The size of vesicles was observed to increase on reduction of solution pH and increase in amphiphile concentration. The vesicles were found to be sufficiently stable under physiological conditions and were shown to be able to encapsulate not only hydrophilic dyes in their aqueous core but also hydrophobic guest molecules in the bilayer membrane constituted by the Chol units. These nanosized vesicles exhibit pH-triggered release of encapsulated dye molecules in acidic pH. Thus, these spontaneously formed stable vesicles might hold potential as biocompatible DDSs in cancer chemotherapy.

Porphyrin-Based Organoplatinum(II) Metallacycles With Enhanced Photooxidization Reactivity

In recent years, metal coordination macrocycles have obtained great interests due to the fact that they combined the rich host-guest properties of macro-cyclic hosts and the unique optical properties of the organic ligands. In this work, we constructed two porphyrin-based organoplatinum(II) metallacycles (MC1 and MC2) through coordination-driven self-assembly. ¹H NMR, ³¹P NMR, and HRMS technologies were used to characterize the structures of MC1 and MC2. Interestingly, MC1 and MC2 can be used as catalysts for photooxidization under light irradiation with higher efficiency compared with the porphyrin ligand only. We hope that the coordination-driven self-assembly strategy can provide an efficient method to construct photo-active materials.

pH-Induced Transition Between Single-Chain Macrocyclic Amphiphile and [c2]Daisy Chain-Based Bola-Type Amphiphile and the Related Self-Assembly Behavior in Water

Macrocyclic amphiphiles, a type of amphiphiles synthesized based on macrocyclic compounds, have attracted much attention over the past decades due to their unique superiority in the construction of various functional nanomaterials. The regulation of the state of macrocyclic amphiphiles by introducing stimuli-responsive motif to macrocyclic amphiphiles is an efficient way to extend their applications in diverse fields. Herein, pillararene-based macrocyclic amphiphile H1 was prepared. H1 can act as single-chain amphiphile to self-assemble into micelles in water when the pH was ≥5.0. H1 can be protonated to turn into H2 when pH changed to <5.0. Interestingly, H2 formed [c2]daisy chain-based bola-type supramolecular amphiphile. This bola-type supramolecular amphiphile self-assembled into nanosheets in water. Therefore, pH-induced transition between single-chain macrocyclic amphiphile and bola-type amphiphile and the corresponding self-assembly system based on pillararene in water were constructed.

Thermodynamically stable vesicle formation of biodegradable double mPEG-tailed amphiphiles with sulfonate head group

The development of efficient, biodegradable and biocompatible surfactants has become a pressing need because of adverse effects of surface-active compounds on the aquatic environment and human health. Cleavable surfactants containing a labile functional group have the ability to eliminate some of these problems. Consequently, PEGylated amphiphiles have found widespread applications in pharmaceutics, household purposes, and drug delivery. Herein we report synthesis and characterization of two novel amphiphiles which to our knowledge are the first examples of double PEG-tailed amphiphiles with an anionic head group. Considering their chemical structure, they are expected to be biodegradable, biocompatible, milder and less irritant than conventional surfactants. The solution behavior of these newly developed amphiphiles was thoroughly investigated in aqueous buffer (pH 7.0) at 25 °C. The surface activity of the compounds in aqueous buffer was studied by surface tension measurements. The self-assembly properties were investigated by various techniques such as fluorescence and NMR spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and isothermal titration calorimetry. Both molecules were found to be surface active in water and exhibit spontaneous vesicle formation in the absence of any additives at room temperature. As in the cases of conventional surfactants, the self-assembly is driven by the hydrophobic effect. The vesicles produced in aqueous media were shown to encapsulate hydrophobic dyes and exhibit structural transitions upon addition of salts. The sensitivity of the vesicles to change in environments qualifies them for potential use in drug delivery.

Spontaneous vesicle formation by biodegradable novel double mPEG-tailed amphiphiles.

A Multifunctional Hybrid[4]arene-Based Macrocyclic Amphiphile: Self-Assembly, Tunable LCST Behavior, and Construction of Fluorescent Nanoparticles for Cell Imaging

A novel macrocyclic amphiphile based on hybrid[4]arene containing tri(ethylene glycol) chains as the hydrophilic part and benzene rings as the hydrophobic part was synthesized. It self-assembled to produce nanoparticles and showed lower critical solution temperature behavior that was affected by its concentration and K⁺. Moreover, amphiphilic H can encapsulate dye G to form host-guest complexes H⊃G, accompanied by significant fluorescence enhancement. H⊃G can further self-assemble to form fluorescent nanoparticles that can be applied in cell imaging.

The Microscopic Structure-Property Relationship of Metal-Organic Polyhedron Nanocomposites

Monodispersed hairy nanocomposites with typical 2 nm (isophthalic acid)₂₄ Cu₂₄ metal-organic polyhedra (MOP) as a core protected by 24 polymer chains with controlled narrow molecular weight distribution has been probed by imaging and scattering studies for the heterogeneity of polymers in the nanocomposites and the confinement effect the MOPs imposing on anchored polymers. Typical confined-extending surrounded by one entanglement area is proposed to describe the physical states of the polymer chains. This model dictates the counterintuitive thermal and rheological properties and prohibited solvent exchange properties of the nanocomposites, whilst those polymer chain states are tunable and deterministic based on their component inputs. From the relationship between the structure and behavior of the MOP nanocomposites, a MOP-composited thermoplastic elastomer was obtained, providing practical solutions to improve mechanical/rheological performances and processabilities of inorganic MOPs.

Photoinduced repetitive separation of a supramolecular assembly composed of an amphiphilic diarylethene mixture

A supramolecular assembly composed of a two-component mixture of amphiphilic diarylethenes, which have octyloxycarbonyl and N-octylcarbamoyl groups, showed a unique macroscopic transformation upon irradiation with UV light and subsequent standing in the dark. Unlike the pure compounds, the assembly was repetitively separated into a blue sphere and a red-purple sparse structure. Both the blue sphere and the sparse structure turned into colorless spheres upon irradiation with visible light and the divided colorless spheres showed the same response to UV and visible light. Phase diagrams based on the change in absorption spectra upon temperature change suggested that the transformation originates from a LCST transition. In the 0.5 : 0.5 mixture, in contrast to the pure compounds, the transition temperature sharply changed at around 50% of the fraction of the closed-ring isomer. TEM imaging showed that the 0.5 : 0.5 mixture with high photoisomerization yield formed a 10 nm-sized network. Judging from the phase diagram and TEM images, the separation is understood as the local phase transition of the regions with a high fraction of the closed-ring isomer.

Solvent-assisted coordination driven assembly of a supramolecular architecture featuring two types of connectivity from discrete nanocages

A 3D nanocage architecture with two types of connectivity was successfully assembled from discrete supramolecular nanocages.

The rapid development of supramolecular chemistry provides a powerful bottom-up approach to construct various well-defined nano-architectures with increasing complexity and functionality. Compared to that of small and simple nanometric objects, the self-assembly of larger and more complex nanometric objects, such as nanocages, remains a significant challenge. Herein, we used a discrete nanocage as the monomer to successfully construct a novel three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular architecture, which comprises two types of nanocage building units with different connectivity, using the solvent-assisted coordination-driven assembly approach. The mechanism of this supramolecular assembly process was investigated by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) studies, which identified for the first time the formation of a nanocage dimer intermediate during the assembly process. The assembly of discrete nanocages into a 3D supramolecular architecture led to remarkable enhancement of stability and gas adsorption properties.

LCST phase behavior of benzo-21-crown-7 with different alkyl chains

The introduction of hydrophobic units into crown ethers can dramatically decrease the critical transition temperature of LCST and realize macroscopic phase separation at low to moderate temperature and concentration. Minor modifications in the chemical structure of crown ethers (benzo-21-crown-7, B21C7s) can effectively control the thermo-responsive properties.

Visualizing the Initial Step of Self-Assembly and the Phase Transition by Stereogenic Amphiphiles with Aggregation-Induced Emission

Many highly ordered structures with smart functions are generated by self-assembly with stimuli responsiveness. Despite that electron microscopes enable us to directly observe the end products, it is hard to visualize the initial step and the kinetic stimuli-responsive behavior of self-assembly. Here, we report the design and synthesis of stereogenic amphiphiles, namely, ( Z)-TPE-OEG and ( E)-TPE-OEG, with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics from the hydrophobic tetraphenylethene core and thermoresponsive behavior from the hydrophilic oligoethylene glycol monomethyl ether chain. The two isomers can be easily isolated by high-performance liquid chromatography and characterized by 2D NMR spectroscopy. While ( Z)-TPE-OEG self-assembles into vesicles, its ( E)-cousin forms micelles in water. The initial step of their self-assembly processes can be visualized based on AIE characteristics, with a sensitivity much higher than the method based on transmittance measurement. The entrapment and release capabilities of the ( Z)-stereogenic amphiphile are demonstrated by employing pyrene as a guest. The thermoresponsive behavior of the ( Z)-amphiphile results in its continuous phase transition from microscopic self-assembly to macroscopic aggregation, which is successfully visualized in situ by confocal laser scanning microscopy accompanied by the AIE technique. Such a kinetic process shows different stages according to the microscopic visualization, and these stages have never been monitored through roughly observing the appearance of precipitates. It is anticipated that this study can deepen the understanding of the self-assembly processes for better monitoring and controlling them in different systems.

Coordination-Driven Self-Assembled Metallacycles Incorporating Pyrene: Fluorescence Mutability, Tunability, and Aromatic Amine Sensing

Constructing polycyclic aromatics-based, highly emissive fluorophores with good solubility and tunable aggregated structures and properties is of great importance for film fabrication, solution processing, and relevant functionality studies. Herein, we describe a general strategy to endow conventional organic fluorophores with enhanced solubility and modulated fluorescent properties via their incorporation into coordination-driven self-assembled metallacycles. A widely used fluorophore, pyrene, was decorated with two pyridyl groups to yield functionalized pyrene 4. Mixing 4 with three aromatic dicarboxylates with different lengths and a 90° Pt(II) metal acceptor in a 2:2:4 stoichiometric ratio resulted in the formation of three metallacycles, 1, 2, and 3. The metallacycles display good solubility in polar organic solvents, highly aggregation-dependent fluorescence, and size-dependent emissions at higher concentrations. Moreover, metallacycle 2-based, silica-gel-supported film as fabricated not only is more emissive than the ligand 4-based one but also displays much improved sensing properties for amines in the vapor state, as demonstrated by significantly increased response speed and decreased recovery time. The enhanced solubility, unique fluorescence behavior, and multi-factor modulation character show that coordination-driven self-assembly can be utilized for the development of new fluorophores through simple modification of conventional fluorophores. The fluorophores synthesized this way possess not only complex topological structures but also good modularity and tunability in fluorescence behavior, which are important for grafting multi-stage energy-transfer systems necessary for the development of high-performance sensing materials.

A degradable low molecular weight monomer system with lower critical solution temperature behaviour in water

A degradable thermo-responsive system was prepared and investigated. The degradation behaviour induced by the cleavage process of the thermo-sensitive crown ethers effectively altered the thermo-responsiveness.

Synthesis and controllable self-assembly of 3D amphiphilic organoplatinum(ii) metallacages in water

A 3D amphiphilic supramolecular coordination metallacycle M1 was designed and fabricated using a new method called “coordination driven self-assembly”. It can self-assemble into well-defined vesicles and further assemble into nanofibres and hybrid vesicles. Importantly, the hybrid vesicles can be applied in photocatalysis in water.

Porphyrin-functionalized coordination star polymers and their potential applications in photodynamic therapy

We present a new family of porphyrin-functionalized coordination star polymers prepared through combination of coordination-driven self-assembly and post-assembly polymerization. Their self-assembly behaviour in water and potential for photodynamic therapy were demonstrated.

Recent developments in the construction of metallacycle/metallacage-cored supramolecular polymers via hierarchical self-assembly

Supramolecular polymers have received considerable attention during the last few decades due to their scientific value in polymer chemistry and profound implications for future developments of advanced materials. Discrete supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) with well-defined size, shape, and geometry have been widely employed to construct hierarchical systems by coordination-driven self-assembly with the spontaneous formation of metal-ligand bonds, which results in the formation of well-defined two-dimensional (2D) metallacycles or three-dimensional (3D) metallacages with high functionalities. The incorporation of discrete SCCs into supramolecular polymers by the orthogonal combination of metal-ligand coordination and other noncovalent interactions or covalent bonding could further facilitate the construction of novel supramolecular polymers with hierarchical architectures and multiple functions including controllable uptake and release of guest molecules, providing a flexible platform for the development of smart materials. In this review, the recent progress in metallacycle/metallacage-cored supramolecular polymers that were constructed by the combination of metal-ligand interactions and other orthogonal interactions (including hydrophobic or hydrophilic interactions, hydrogen bonding, van der Waals forces, π-π stacking, electrostatic interactions, host-guest interactions and covalent bonding) has been discussed. In addition, the potential applications of metallacycle/metallacage-cored supramolecular polymers in the areas of light emitting, sensing, bio-imaging, delivery and release, etc., are also presented.

Diamondoid Supramolecular Coordination Frameworks from Discrete Adamantanoid Platinum(II) Cages

Recently, porous framework materials with various network-type structures have been constructed via several different approaches, such as coordination interactions, reversible covalent bonds, and non-covalent interactions. Here, we have combined the concepts of supramolecular coordination complex (SCC) and metal-organic framework to offer a new strategy to construct a diamondoid supramolecular coordination framework (SCF) from an adamantanoid supramolecular coordination cage as the tetrahedral node and a difunctional Pt(II) ligand as the linear linker via stepwise orientation-induced supramolecular coordination. The adamantanoid supramolecular coordination cage has four uncoordinated pyridyl groups, which serve as the four vertexes of the tetrahedral geometry in the diamondoid framework. As a result, this diamondoid SCF exhibits an adamantanoid-to-adamantanoid substructure with two sets of pores, including the interior cavity of the adamantanoid cage and the extended adamantanoid space between the individual cages in the framework. In addition, the shape-controllable and highly ordered self-assembly of nanometer-sized diamondoid SCF is observed as micrometer-sized regular octahedrons by evaporation under heating in DMSO. This study demonstrates the potential application of supramolecular coordination complexes in the precise construction of highly regulated porous framework materials.

Multi-mode supermolecular polymerization driven by host-guest interactions

A novel supermolecular self-assembly based on ternary host-guest interaction between cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]), 1,1'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium dication (MV) and coumarin derivative was applied for the construction of linear supramolecular polymer with high degree of polymerization in aqueous solution. Accompanied by the introduction of azobenzene on linear ABBA type monomer the supermolecular polymerization is different and the morphology changes from linear to dendritic polymer. The successful supramolecular polymerization of linear and dendritic supramolecular polymers by non-covalent host-guest molecular recognition was confirmed by various characterization methods, such as 1H NMR spectroscopy, ROESY, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements. Meanwhile, the supramolecular polymerization could promote the conversion of the azobenzene from cis to trans, which ultimately results in no isomerism upon UV irradiation.

Supramolecular control over pillararene-based LCST phase behaviour

Based on the supramolecular interactions between pillar[5]arenes and ionic liquids, supramolecular control was successfully introduced into thermo-responsive systems to adjust LCST phase behaviour in water.
