Abstract
Reactions of the IrV hydride [Me BDIDipp ]IrH4 {BDI=(Dipp)NC(Me)CH(Me)CN(Dipp); Dipp=2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 } with E[N(SiMe3 )2 ]2 (E=Sn, Pb) afforded the unusual dimeric dimetallotetrylenes ([Me BDIDipp ]IrH)2 (μ2 -E)2 in good yields. Moreover, ([Me BDIDipp ]IrH)2 (μ2 -Ge)2 was formed in situ from thermal decomposition of [Me BDIDipp ]Ir(H)2 Ge[N(SiMe3 )2 ]2 . These reactions are accompanied by liberation of HN(SiMe3 )2 and H2 through the apparent cleavage of an E-N(SiMe3 )2 bond by Ir-H. In a reversal of this process, ([Me BDIDipp ]IrH)2 (μ2 -E)2 reacted with excess H2 to regenerate [Me BDIDipp ]IrH4 . Varying the concentrations of reactants led to formation of the trimeric ([Me BDIDipp ]IrH2 )3 (μ2 -E)3 . The further scope of this synthetic route was investigated with group 15 amides, and ([Me BDIDipp ]IrH)2 (μ2 -Bi)2 was prepared by the reaction of [Me BDIDipp ]IrH4 with Bi(NMe2 )3 or Bi(OtBu)3 to afford the first example of a "naked" two-coordinate Bi atom bound exclusively to transition metals. A viable mechanism that accounts for the formation of these products is proposed. Computational investigations of the Ir2 E2 (E=Sn, Pb) compounds characterized them as open-shell singlets with confined nonbonding lone pairs at the E centers. In contrast, Ir2 Bi2 is characterized as having a closed-shell singlet ground state.

Abstract
Carbide complexes remain a rare class of molecules. Their paucity does not reflect exceptional instability but is rather due to the generally narrow scope of synthetic procedures for constructing carbide complexes. The preparation of carbide complexes typically revolves around generating LnM-CEx fragments, followed by cleavage of the C-E bonds of the coordinated carbon-based ligands (the alternative being direct C atom transfer). Prime examples involve deoxygenation of carbonyl ligands and deprotonation of methyl ligands, but several other p-block fragments can be cleaved off to afford carbide ligands. This Review outlines synthetic strategies toward terminal carbide complexes, bridging carbide complexes, as well as carbide-carbonyl cluster complexes. It then surveys the reactivity of carbide complexes, covering stoichiometric reactions where the carbide ligands act as C1 reagents, engage in cross-coupling reactions, and enact Fischer-Tropsch-like chemistry; in addition, we discuss carbide complexes in the context of catalysis. Finally, we examine spectroscopic features of carbide complexes, which helps to establish the presence of the carbide functionality and address its electronic structure.

Abstract
Carbon tetrabromide can be reduced with CrBr2 in THF to form a dinuclear carbido complex, [CrBr2(thf)2)][CrBr2(thf)3](μ-C), along with formation of [CrBr3(thf)3]. An X-ray diffraction (XRD) study of the pyridine adduct displayed a dinuclear structure bridged by a carbido ligand between 5- and 6-coordinate chromium centers. The carbido complex reacted with two equivalents of aldehydes to form α,β-unsaturated ketones. Treatment of the carbido complex with alkenes resulted in a formal double-cyclopropanation of alkenes by the carbido moiety to afford spiropentanes. Isotope labeling studies using a 13C-enriched carbido complex, [CrBr2(thf)2)][CrBr2(thf)3](μ-13C), identified that the quaternary carbon in the spiropentane framework was delivered by carbide transfer from the carbido complex. Terminal and internal alkynes also reacted with the carbido complex to form cyclopropenylidene complexes. A solid-state structure of the diethylcyclopropenylidene complex, prepared from 3-hexyne, showed a mononuclear cyclopropenylidene chromium(iii) structure.

Abstract
The formation of linear hydrocarbon chains by sequential coupling of C1 units on the metal surface is the central part of the Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis. Organometallic complexes have provided numerous models of relevant individual C-C coupling events but have failed to reproduce the complete chain lengthening sequence that transforms a linear Cn hydrocarbon chain into its Cn+1 homologue in an iterative fashion. In this work, we demonstrate stepwise growth of linear Cn hydrocarbon chains and their conversion to their Cn+1 homologues via consecutive addition of CH2 units on a molecular diruthenium carbide platform. The chain growth sequence is initiated by the formation of a μ-η1:η1-C═CH2 ligand from a C + CH2 coupling between the μ-carbido complex [(Cp*Ru)2(η-NPh)(μ-C)] (1; Cp* = η5-C5Me5) and Ph2SCH2. Then, the chain propagates via a general C═CHR + CH2 coupling and subsequent hydrogen-assisted isomerization of the resulting allene ligand μ-η1:η3-H2C═C═CHR to a higher vinylidene homologue μ-η1:η1-C═CH(CH2)R. By repeating this reaction sequence, up to C6 chains have been synthesized in a stepwise fashion. The key step of this chain homologation sequence is the selective hydrogenation of the μ-η1:η3-allene unit to the corresponding μ-alkylidene ligand. Isotope labeling and computational studies indicate that this transformation proceeds via the hydrogenation of the allene ligand to a terminal alkene form and its isomerization to the μ-alkylidene ligand facilitated by the coordinatively unsaturated diruthenium platform.

Abstract
Open-shell compounds bearing metal-carbon triple bonds, such as carbides and carbynes, are of significant interest as plausible intermediates in the reductive catenation of C1 oxygenates. Despite the abundance of closed-shell carbynes reported, open-shell variants are very limited, and an open-shell carbide has yet to be reported. Herein, we report the synthesis of the first terminal, open-shell carbide complexes, [K][1] and [1][BArF4] (1 = P2Mo(≡C:)(CO), P2 = a terphenyl diphosphine ligand), which differ by two redox states, as well as a series of related open-shell carbyne complexes. The complexes are characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and NMR, EPR, and IR spectroscopies, while the electronic structures are probed by EPR studies and DFT calculations to assess spin delocalization. In the d1 complexes, the spin is primarily localized on the metal (∼55-77% Mo dxy) with delocalization on the triply bonded carbon of ∼0.05-0.09 e-. In the reduced carbide [K][1], a direct metal-arene interaction enables ancillary ligand reduction, resulting in reduced radical character on the terminal carbide (⩽0.02 e-). Reactivity studies with [K][1] reveal the formation of mixed-valent C-C coupled products at -40 °C, illustrating how productive reactivity manifolds can be engendered through the manipulation of redox states. Combined, the results inform on the electronic structure and reactivity of a new and underrepresented class of compounds with potential significance to a wide array of reactions involving open-shell species.

Abstract
Although there are myriad binding modes of heterocumulenes to metal centers, the monometallic κ2-ECE (E = O, S, NR) coordination mode has not been reported. Herein, the synthesis, isolation, and physical characterization of Cp2Ti(κ2-tBuNCNtBu) (3) (Cp = cyclopentadienyl, tBu = tert-butyl), a strained 4-membered metallacycle bearing a free carbene, is described. Computational (DFT, CASSCF, QT-AIM, ELF) and solid-state CP-MAS 13C NMR spectroscopic analysis indicate that 3 is best described as a free carbene with partial Ti-Cβ bonding that results from Ti-N π-bonding mixing with N-C-N σ-bonding of the bent N-C-N framework. Reactivity studies of 3 corroborate its carbene-like nature: protonation with [LutH]I results in the formation of a Ti-formamidinate (4), while oxidation with S8 yields a Ti-thioureate (5). Additionally, a related bridged dititanamidocarbene, (Cp2Ti)2(μ-η1,η1-CyNCNCy) (10) (Cy = cyclohexyl) is reported. Taken together, this work suggests that the 2-electron reduction of heterocumulene moieties can allow access to unusual free carbene coordination geometries given the proper stabilizing coordination environment from the reducing transition metal fragment.

Abstract
Although the chemistry of transition-metal complexes with carbonyl (CO) and thiocarbonyl (CS) ligands has been well developed, their heavier analogues, namely selenocarbonyl (CSe) and tellurocarbonyl (CTe) complexes remain scarce. The limited availability of such CSe and CTe complexes has so far hampered our understanding of the differences between such chalcogenocarbonyl (CE: E=O, S, Se, Te) ligands. Herein, we report the synthesis and properties of a series of cationic half-sandwich ruthenium CE complexes of the type [CpRu(CE)(H2 IMes)(CNCH2 Ts)][BArF 4 ] (Cp=η5 -C5 H5 - ; H2 IMes=1,3-dimesitylimidazolin-2-ylidene; ArF =3,5-(CF3 )2 C6 H3 ). A combination of X-ray diffraction analyses, NMR spectroscopic analyses, and DFT calculations revealed an increasing π-accepting ability of the CE ligands in the order O<S<Se<Te. A variable-temperature NMR analysis of the thus obtained chiral-at-metal CE complexes indicated high stereochemical stability.

Abstract
Chemical transformations that result in either the formation or cleavage of carbon-heteroatom bonds are among the most important processes in the chemical sciences. Herein, we present a review on the reactivity of well-defined, late-transition metal complexes that result in the making and breaking of C-N, C-O and C-S bonds via fundamental organometallic reactions, i.e. oxidative addition, reductive elimination, insertion and elimination reactions. When appropriate, emphasis is placed on structural and spectroscopic characterization techniques, as well as mechanistic data.
