Abstract
The planar morphology of the backbone significantly contributes to the subtle optoelectronic features of π-conjugated polymers. On the other hand, the atomistic tuning of an otherwise identical π-backbone could also impact optoelectronic properties systematically. In this manuscript, we compare a series of 3,4-cycloalkylchalcogenophenes by tuning them atomistically using group-16 elements. Additionally, the effect of systematically extending these building blocks in the form of oligomers and polymers is studied. The size of the 3,4-substitution affected the morphology of the oligomers. In addition, the heteroatoms contributed to a further alteration in their geometry and resultant optoelectronic properties. The chalcogenophenes, containing smaller 3,4-cycloalkanes, resulted in lower bandgap oligomers or polymers compared to those with larger 3,4-cycloalkanes. Natural bonding orbital (NBO) calculations were performed to understand the disparity alongside the contour maps of frontier molecular orbitals (FMO).

Abstract
In this theoretical study, we set out to demonstrate the substitution effect of PEDOT analogues on planarity as an intrinsic indicator for electronic performance. We perform a quantum mechanical (DFT) study of PEDOT and analogous model systems and demonstrate the usefulness of the ωB97X-V functional to simulate chalcogen bonds and other noncovalent interactions. We confirm that the chalcogen bond stabilizes the planar conformation and further visualize its presence via the electrostatic potential surface. In comparison to the prevalent B3LYP, we gain 4-fold savings in computational time and simulate model systems of up to a dodecamer. Implications for design of conductive polymers can be drawn from the results, and an example for self-doped polymers is presented where modulation of the strength of the chalcogen bond plays a significant role.

Abstract
Peri-thiaxanthenothiaxanthene, an S-doped analog of peri-xanthenoxanthene, is used as a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) scaffold to tune the molecular semiconductor properties by editing the oxidation state of the S-atoms. Chemical oxidation of peri-thiaxanthenothiaxanthene with H2 O2 led to the relevant sulfoxide and sulfone congeners, whereas electrooxidation gave access to sulfonium-type derivatives forming crystalline mixed valence (MV) complexes. These complexes depicted peculiar molecular and solid-state arrangements with face-to-face π-π stacking organization. Photophysical studies showed a widening of the optical bandgap upon progressive oxidation of the S-atoms, with the bis-sulfone derivative displaying the largest value (E00 =2.99 eV). While peri-thiaxanthenothiaxanthene showed reversible oxidation properties, the sulfoxide and sulfone derivatives mainly showed reductive events, corroborating their n-type properties. Electric measurements of single crystals of the MV complexes exhibited a semiconducting behavior with a remarkably high conductivity at room temperature (10-1 -10-2 S cm-1 and 10-2 -10-3 S cm-1 for the O and S derivatives, respectively), one of the highest reported so far. Finally, the electroluminescence properties of the complexes were tested in light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs), obtaining the first S-doped mid-emitting PAH-based LECs.

Abstract
AbstractThe intrinsic flexibility, solution processability, and optoelectronic properties of semiconducting conjugated polymers make them ideal candidates for use in a wide range of next-generation electronic devices. A virtually unlimited chemical design space has led to diverse polymeric architectures made from combinations of smaller molecular building blocks with desirable functionalities. Of these, thiophene is undoubtedly the most common due to its mixture of synthetic versatility, polymer backbone planarizing effects, and good optoelectronic characteristics. However, the success of thiophene has meant that other heterocycles, such as selenophene, remain relatively underexplored. This focus review discusses the challenges and material advantages of incorporating selenophene into conjugated polymer systems within the context of our contributions to the field. The early studies of poorly performing electrochemically synthesized polyselenophenes are outlined, progressing onto the model chemically synthesized alkylated homopolymers that revealed the key consequences of selenophene addition. We then review the various donor and donor-acceptor copolymer strategies that have exploited the properties of the selenium atom to enhance the performance of solar cells, transistors, and other organic electronic devices. Finally, we give our perspective on the state of the field and the fundamental material optimization studies required to realize the full potential of selenophene-containing conjugated polymers.

Abstract
Herein, a straightforward method for the synthesis of 2,5-disubstituted selenophenes via [2+2+1] cyclization of easily accessible terminal alkynes and elemental selenium has been developed. This reaction features high atom- and step-economy, excellent regioselectivity, good functional group tolerance and the use of stable and non-toxic selenium as a selenium source. A series of control experiments suggests that the reaction might undergo Glaser coupling reaction of two molecules of alkynes, followed by insertion of H2Se and subsequent cyclization. Moreover, the newly formed products can be further converted to diverse conjugated selenophene-based derivatives, demonstrating their potential applications in organic synthesis and materials science.

Abstract
In this study, an electrochemical sensor for dopamine (DA) detection has been developed by a composite of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxyselenophene) (PEDOS) and nitrogen-doped graphene (PEDOS/N-Gr) using an in situ polymerization method. Its structure and properties were then compared with those of the composites of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)/nitrogen-doped graphene (PEDOT/N-Gr), which were prepared by the same methods. FT-IR, Raman, UV-vis, XPS, mapping and SEM investigated the structure and morphology of these composites. These revealed that PEDOS/N-Gr had a higher conjugation degree than PEDOT/N-Gr. The synergetic effect between PEDOS and N-Gr was beneficial for the formation of a homogenous surface coating. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) methods were conducted for electrochemical detection of DA. Compared with PEDOT/N-Gr, the PEDOS/N-Gr displayed an enhanced sensitivity and electrocatalytic performance for DA detection with linear ranges of 0.008-80 μM (PEDOT/N-Gr: 0.04-70 μM) and limits of detection (LOD) of 0.0066 μM (S/N = 3) (PEDOT/N-Gr: 0.018 μM (S/N = 3)).

Abstract
Arene-fused selenophenes were synthesized by a redox neutral process from arylethynyl substituted polycyclic arenes using selenium powder in refluxing N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) with the assistance of the residual water in NMP as a catalytic proton source. The site-selective nature of this selenocyclization produces trans-alkenes as a competitive product, which is dependent on the π-electron donation ability of polycyclic arenes and the kind of arylethynyl group attached to it. DFT calculations were performed to understand the site selectivity in the selenophene formation reaction. The HOMO coefficient on the carbon adjacent to carbon having arylalkyne substituent of the polycyclic arene correlates with the selenocyclization tendency of the substrate. The wavelength of absorption and emission and quantum yield of emission increase with increasing the number of fused benzene rings in the polycyclic unit (from naphthalene to pyrene).

Abstract
In the present study, we theoretically determine the optoelectronic, electronic, nonlinear optical (NLO) and thermodynamic properties of new materials from the conjugated organic polymer poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) doped with halogens (fluorine and chlorine), combined with the organic semiconductor 4-[2-(2-N, N-dihydroxy amino thiophene) vinyl] benzenamine (DATVB). The molecular geometry of the ground state, the optoelectronics and electronic parameters have been calculated by combining the 6-311++G (d, p) basis set with various functionals of the density functional theory (DFT). The functionals B3LYP and CAM-B3LYP have been used for NLO parameters. The energy gaps obtained for all the compounds are less than 3.0 eV. These results clearly show that PEDOT and its derivatives can be considered as good semiconductors. They can be tested for use in the manufacture of organic solar cells (OSC) and organic light-emitting diodes (OLED). The first order hyperpolarizabilities of these PEDOT hybrid compounds are much higher than those of the reference compound for NLO applications, namely para-nitroaniline (p-NA), which opens up a new field of application for PEDOT in NLO devices. The thermodynamic parameters such as the zero-point vibrational energy (ZPVE), the enthalpy (H), the heat capacity at constant volume (cv), the entropy (S) and the free energy (G) have been calculated and are reported herein.

Abstract
An efficient and atom-economical silver-mediated [2 + 2 + 1] cyclization protocol for the synthesis of 3,4-fused-ring-substituted and 2,5-unsubstituted selenophenes or thiophenes has been developed. Two C-Se/C-S bonds and one C-C bond were rapidly constructed in one step. Readily accessible substrates, commercially available elemental selenium/sulfur, and good functional group tolerance make this procedure attractive for the synthesis of π-conjugated material molecules.

Abstract
Two novel and simple donor-π-bridge-donor (D-π-D) hole-transporting materials (HTMs) containing two units of the p-methoxytriphenylamine (TPA) electron donor group covalently bridged by means of the 3,4-dimethoxyselenophene spacer through single and triple bonds are reported. The optoelectronic and thermal properties of the new selenium-containing HTMs have been determined using standard experimental techniques and theoretical density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The selenium-based HTMs have been incorporated in mesoporous perovskite solar cells (PSCs) in combination with the triple-cation perovskite [(FAPbI3 )0.87 (MAPbBr3 )0.13 ]0.92 [CsPbI3 ]0.08 . Limited values of power conversion efficiencies, up to 13.4 %, in comparison with the archetype spiro-OMeTAD (17.8 %), were obtained. The reduced efficiencies showed by the new HTMs are attributed to their poor film-forming ability, which constrains their photovoltaic performance due to the appearance of structural defects (pinholes).

Abstract
In this article, we report the effect of electropolymerization conditions such as solvent and supporting electrolyte on the redox, optoelectronic and electrochromic properties of PEDOS. Monomer EDOS was synthesized by new and simple route and its electropolymerization was investigated by employing six different combinations of solvent–electrolyte namely TBAClO4/MeCN, TBAPF6/MeCN, TBABF4/MeCN, TBAClO4/PC, TBAPF6/PC and TBABF4/PC. Further, the electrochemical, spectroelectrochemistry, morphology and electrochromic properties of resultant PEDOS films were systematically studied. A pronounced effect of both solvent and supporting electrolyte on the electropolymerization, redox, optoelectronic and electrochromic properties on PEDOS film is noted. Among all solvent–electrolyte systems, MeCN and TBAClO4 were found to be the most suitable medium for electropolymerization of EDOS. Further, PEDOS films prepared in PC showed red shifted absorption maxima, narrow absorption peaks in UV-vis-NIR spectra, slightly more smooth morphologies, and high optical contrasts ratio and coloration efficiency in comparison to MeCN. PEDOS films prepared in TBABF4/PC exhibited longer λmax (670 nm), smooth morphology, and the highest optical contrasts ratio (44.6%) and coloration efficiency (141.8 cm2 C−1) compared to the other solvent–electrolyte medium. In this article, we report the effect of electropolymerization conditions such as solvent and supporting electrolyte on the redox, optoelectronic and electrochromic properties of PEDOS.![]()

Abstract
Polymers containing rich chalcogen elements are rarely reported due to the lack of facile synthesis methods. Herein, a novel multicomponent polymerization route toward chalcogen-rich polymers was introduced. A series of poly(vinyl sulfones) (PVSs) were synthesized at room temperature using readily prepared monomers. PVSs were generated with high regio- and stereo-selectivity in high yields (up to 92.3%). Rich chalcogen elements endowed PVSs with distingctive multifunctionalities. The PVSs possessed good solubility and film-forming ability. Their thin films exhibited outstanding refractive indices up to 1.8062 at 550.0 nm together with good optical transparency in the visible region. Thin films of some polymers can also be fabricated into well-resolved fluorescent photopatterns by photolithography. Thanks to the unique redox properties of selenium, postmodification by oxidation reaction of P1a/2/3a successfully eliminates the caused heavy atom effect and endow resulting polymers with novel functionality as fluorescent bioprobes for cellular imaging.

Abstract
Abstract
Selenium and tellurium form binary halides in which the chalcogen can be in formal oxidation states (IV), (II) or (I). They are versatile reagents for the preparation of a wide range of inorganic and organic selenium and tellurium compounds taking advantage of the reactivity of the chalcogen–halogen bond. With the exception of the tetrafluorides, the tetrahalides are either commercially available or readily prepared. On the other hand, the low-valent species, EX2 (E = Se, Te; X = Cl, Br) and E2X2 (E = Se, Te; X = Cl, Br) are unstable with respect to disproportionation and must be used as in situ reagents. Organoselenium and tellurium halides are well-known in oxidation states (IV) and (II), as exemplified by REX3, R2EX2 and REX (R = alkyl, aryl; E = Se, Te; X = F, Cl, Br, I); mixed-valent (IV/II) compounds of the type RTeX2TeR are also known. This chapter surveys the availability and/or preparative methods for these widely used reagents followed by examples of their applications in synthetic inorganic and organic selenium and tellurium chemistry. For both the binary halides and their organic derivatives, the discussion is subdivided according to the formal oxidation state of the chalcogen.

Abstract
Three new heteroatom bay-annulated perylene bisimides (PBIs) have been synthesized by microwave-assisted synthesis in excellent yield. N-annulated and S-annulated perylene bisimides exhibited columnar hexagonal phase, whereas Se-annulated perylene bisimide exhibited low temperature columnar oblique phase in addition to the high temperature columnar hexagonal phase. The cup shaped bay-annulated PBIs pack into columns with enhanced intermolecular interactions. In comparison to PBI, these molecules exhibited lower melting and clearing temperature, with good solubility. A small red shift in the absorption was seen in the case of N-annulated PBI, whereas S- and Se-annulated PBIs exhibited blue-shifted absorption spectra. Bay-annulation increased the HOMO and LUMO levels of the N-annulated perylene bisimide, whereas a slight increase in the LUMO level and a decrease in the HOMO levels were observed in the case of S- and Se-annulated perylene bisimides, in comparison to the simple perylene bisimide. The band gaps of PBI and PBI-N were almost same, whereas an increase in the band gaps were observed in the case of S- and Se-annulated PBIs. The tendency to freeze in the ordered glassy columnar phase for PBI-N and PBI-S will help to overcome the charge traps due to crystallization, which are detrimental to one-dimensional charge carrier mobility. These solution processable electron deficient columnar semiconductors possessing good thermal stability may form an easily accessible promising class of n-type materials.

Abstract
The conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), or PEDOT, is an attractive material for flexible electronics. We present combined molecular dynamics and quantum chemical calculations, based on density functional theory, of EDOT oligomers and isoelectronic selenium and tellurium derivatives (EDOS and EDOTe) to address the effect of temperature on the geometrical and electronic properties of these systems. With finite size scaling, we also extrapolate our results to the infinite polymers, i.e., PEDOT, PEDOS, and PEDOTe. Our computations indicate that the most favourable oligomer conformations at finite temperature are conformations around the flat trans-conformation and a non-flat conformation around 45° from the cis-conformation. Also, the dihedral stiffness increases with the atomic number of the heteroatom. We find excellent agreement with experimentally measured gaps for PEDOT and PEDOS. For PEDOT, the gap does not increase with temperature, whereas this is the case for its derivatives. The conformational disorder and the choice of the basis set both significantly affect the calculated gaps.
