Abstract
Controlling the polymerization of supramolecular self-assembly through external stimuli holds great potential for the development of responsive soft materials and manipulation at the nanoscale. Vinyl esters of bis(leu or val)fumaramide (1a and 2a) have been found to be gelators of various organic solvents and were applied in this investigation of the influence of organogelators’ self-assembly on solid-state polymerization induced by gamma and ultraviolet irradiation. Here, we report our investigation into the influences of self-assemblies of bis(amino acid vinyl ester)fumaramides on gamma-ray- and ultraviolet-induced polymerization. The gelator molecules self-assembled by non-covalent interactions, mainly through hydrogen bonds between the amide group (CONH) and the carboxyl group (COO), thus forming a gel network. NMR and FTIR spectroscopy were used to investigate and characterize supramolecular gels. TEM and SEM microscopy were used to investigate the morphology of gels and polymers. Morphology studies showed that the gels contained a filamentous structure of nanometer dimensions that was exhaustive in a three-dimensional network. The prepared derivatives contained reactive alkyl groups suitable for carrying out the polymerization reaction initiated by gamma or ultraviolet radiation in the supramolecular aggregates of selected gels. It was found that the polymerization reaction occurred only in the network of the gel and was dependent on the structure of aggregates or the proximity and orientation of double bonds in the gel network. Polymers were formed by the gels exposure to gamma and ultraviolet radiation in toluene, and water/DMF gels with transcripts of their gel structure into polymers. The polymeric material was able to immobilize various solvents by swelling. Furthermore, methyl esters of bis(leu and val)fumaramide (1b and 2b) were synthesized; these compounds showed no gelling properties, and the crystal structure of the valine derivative 2b was determined.

Abstract
Self-templating two-component coupling reactions allowed the isolation of two threaded products with different molecular sizes: a lasso-type [1]rotaxane and a [c2]daisy chain rotaxane. Their distribution in the final reaction mixture varies as a factor of the concentration of the reactants. Through this methodology we obtained a large 84-membered cyclic multistation [2]rotaxane.

Abstract
Well-defined structural changes of molecular units that can be triggered by light are crucial for the development of photoactive functional materials. Herein, we report on a novel switch that has azodicarboxamide as its photo-triggerable element. Time-resolved UV-pump/IR probe spectroscopy in combination with quantum-chemical calculations shows that the azodicarboxamide functionality, in contrast to other azo-based chromophores, does not undergo trans-cis photoisomerization. Instead, a photoinduced pedalo-type motion occurs, which because of its volume-conserving properties enables the design of functional molecular systems with controllable motion in a confined space.

Abstract
When excited with high energy quanta, specially designed 3-hydroxychromone derivatives demonstrate dramatic enhancement of the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) reaction in obvious violation of Kasha's rule.
We report unusual photophysical properties observed on two newly designed 3-hydroxychromone derivatives exhibiting the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) reaction. The efficiency of ESIPT reaction is greatly enhanced upon excitation with high energy quanta to Sn (n > 1) levels in low-polarity solvents. Based on detailed analyses of excitation and emission spectra as well as time-resolved emission kinetics we derive that conditions, in which this phenomenon contradicting Kasha's rule is observed, are quite different from that for observation of anti-Kasha emission.

Abstract
The role of extended seams of conical intersection in excited-state mechanisms is reviewed. Seams are crossings of the potential energy surface in many dimensions where the decay from the excited to the ground state can occur, and the extended seam is composed of different segments lying along a reaction coordinate. Every segment is associated with a different primary photoproduct, which gives rise to competing pathways. This idea is first illustrated for fulvene and ethylene, and then it is used to explain more complex cases such as the dependence of the isomerisation of retinal chromophore isomers on the protein environment, the dependence of the efficiency of the azobenzene photochemical switch on the wavelength of irradiation and the direction of the isomerisation, and the coexistence of different mechanisms in the photo-induced Wolff rearrangement of diazonaphthoquinone. The role of extended seams in the photophysics of the DNA nucleobases and the relationship between two-state seams and three-state crossings is also discussed. As an outlook, the design of optical control strategies based on the passage of the excited molecule through the seam is considered, and it is shown how the excited-state lifetime of fulvene can be modulated by shaping the energy of the seam.

Abstract
The preparation and dynamic behavior of degenerate rotaxane molecular shuttles are described in which a benzylic amide macrocycle moves back and forth between two naphthalimide-glycine units along a diphenylethyne spacer or an aliphatic spacer consisting of a C(9), C(12), or C(26) alkyl chain. Subtle differences in the (1)H NMR spectra of the rotaxanes can be related to the presence of conformers in which the macrocycle interacts simultaneously with both glycines, especially in the case of the C(9) spacer. The kinetic data of the shuttling behavior in the C(26) rotaxane were obtained from dynamic NMR spectroscopy. The Eyring activation parameters were found to be ΔH(‡) = 10 ± 1 kcal mol(-1), ΔS(‡) = -6.5 ± 2.0 cal mol(-1) K(-1), ΔG(‡)(298) = 11.9 ± 0.2 kcal mol(-1). For the systems with the shorter spacers, the shuttling rates were higher. Also in the diphenylethyne, rotaxane shuttling is rapid on the NMR time scale, indicating that the rigid unit does not impose a large barrier to the translocation of the macrocycle.
