Abstract
The gas-phase clusters reaction permits addressing fundamental aspects of the challenges related to C-H activation. The size effect plays a key role in the activation processes as it may substantially affect both the reactivity and selectivity. In this paper, we reviewed the size effect related to the hydrocarbon oxidation by early transition metal oxides and main group metal oxides, methane activation mediated by late transition metals. Based on mass-spectrometry experiments in conjunction with quantum chemical calculations, mechanistic discussions were reviewed to present how and why the size greatly regulates the reactivity and product distribution.

Abstract
The unique characteristic of superatoms to show chemical properties like those of individual atoms opens a new avenue towards replacing noble metals as catalysts. Given the similar electronic structures of the ZrO superatom and the Pd atom, the CO oxidation mechanisms catalysed by (ZrO)n (n=1-4) clusters were investigated in detail to evaluate their catalytic performance. Our results reveal that a single ZrO superatom exhibits superior catalytic ability in CO oxidation than both larger (ZrO)n (n=2-4) clusters and a Pd atom, indicating the promising potential of ZrO as a "single-superatom catalyst". Moreover, the mechanism of CO oxidation catalysed by ZrO+/- suggests that depositing a ZrO superatom onto the electron-rich substrates is a better choice for practical catalysis application. Accordingly, a graphene nanosheet (coronene) was chosen as a representative substrate for ZrO and Pd to assess their catalytic performances in CO oxidation. Acting as an "electron sponge", this carbon substrate can both donate and accept charges in different reaction steps, enabling the supported ZrO to achieve enhanced catalytic performance in this process with a low energy barrier of 19.63 kcal/mol. This paper presents a new realization on the catalytic performance of Pd-like superatom in CO oxidation, which could increase the interests in exploring noble metal-like superatoms as efficient catalysts for various reactions.

Abstract
Metal oxide cluster models of catalyst materials offer a powerful platform for probing the molecular-scale features and interactions that govern catalysis. This perspective gives an overview of studies implementing the combination of anion photoelectron (PE) spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations toward exploring cluster models of metal oxides and metal-oxide supported Pt that catalytically drive the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) or the water-gas shift reaction. The utility in the combination of these experimental and computational techniques lies in our ability to unambiguously determine electronic and molecular structures, which can then connect to results of reactivity studies. In particular, we focus on the activity of oxygen vacancies modeled by suboxide clusters, the critical mechanistic step of forming proximal metal hydride and hydroxide groups as a prerequisite for H2 production, and the structural features that lead to trapped dihydroxide groups. The pronounced asymmetric oxidation found in heterometallic group 6 oxides and near-neighbor group 5/group 6 results in higher activity toward water, while group 7/group 6 oxides form very specific stoichiometries that suggest facile regeneration. Studies on the trans-periodic combination of cerium oxide and platinum as a model for ceria supported Pt atoms and nanoparticles reveal striking negative charge accumulation by Pt, which, combined with the ionic conductivity of ceria, suggests a mechanism for the exceptionally high activity of this system towards the water-gas shift reaction.

Abstract
Photocatalytic hydrogenation of carbon dioxide (CO2) to produce value-added chemicals and fuel products is a critical routine to solve environmental issues. However, developing photocatalysts composed of earth-abundant, economic, and environmental-friendly elements is desired and challenging. Metal oxide clusters of subnanometer size have prominent advantages for photocatalysis due to their natural resistance to oxidation as well as tunable electronic and optical properties. Here, we exploit 3d transition metal substitutionally doped Zn12O12 clusters for CO2 hydrogenation under ultraviolet light. By comprehensive ab initio calculations, the effect of the dopant element on the catalytic behavior of Zn12O12 clusters is clearly revealed. The high activity for CO2 hydrogenation originates from the distinct electronic states and charge transfer from transition metal dopants. The key parameters governing the activity and selectivity, including the d orbital center of TM dopants and the energy level of the highest occupied molecular orbital for the doped Zn12O12 clusters, are thoroughly analyzed to establish an explicit electronic structure-activity relationship. These results provide valuable guidelines not only for tailoring the catalytic performance of subnanometer metal oxide clusters at atomic precision but also for rationally designing non-precious metal photocatalysts for CO2 hydrogenation.

Abstract
AbstractElectrocatalytic activity of Pt and bimetallic PtRu nanoparticles (both Vulcan supported and unsupported) toward electrooxidation of dimethyl ether (DME), a potential small organic molecule fuel, in an acid medium (0.5 mol dm−3 H2SO4) has been significantly enhanced by dispersing them over a thin film of zirconia (ZrO2). The enhancement effects concern increases of the DME electrocatalytic current densities recorded under both cyclic voltammetric and chronoamperometric conditions. Similar effects have been observed for the oxidation of methanol. Regarding the dissimilar DME electrooxidation mechanisms at Pt and PtRu catalytic centers, the activating capabilities of zirconia seem to originate from the high population of reactive –OH groups favoring mobility of protons and the capability of inducing the oxidative removal of poisoning (CO-type) intermediates both at platinum and ruthenium catalytic sites. In the presence of the zirconia matrix, the onset potential for the oxidation of DME (particularly at PtRu) is shifted more than 50 mV toward less positive potentials. Mutual metal-support interactions are also postulated.

Abstract
Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are employed to investigate the reactivity of tungsten oxide clusters towards carbon monoxide. Extensive structural searches show that all the ground-state structures of (WO3)n(+) (n = 1-4) contain an oxygen radical center with a lengthened W-O bond which is highly active in the oxidation of carbon monoxide. Energy profiles are calculated to determine the reaction mechanisms and evaluate the effect of cluster sizes. The monomer WO3(+) has the highest reactivity among the stoichiometric clusters of different sizes (WO3)n(+) (n = 1-4). The reaction mechanisms for CO with mono-nuclear stoichiometric tungsten oxide clusters with different charges (WO3(-/0/+)) are also studied to clarify the influence of charge states. Our calculated results show that the ability to oxidize CO gets weaker from WO3(+) to WO3(-) as the negative charge accumulates progressively.
