Triplet Excimer Formation in Platinum-Based Phosphors: A Theoretical Study of the Roles of Pt−Pt Bimetallic Interactions and Interligand π−π Interactions

Enhanced solid-state phosphorescence of organoplatinum π-systems by ion-pairing assembly

Anion binding and ion pairing of dipyrrolyldiketone PtII complexes as anion-responsive π-electronic molecules resulted in photophysical modulations, as observed in solid-state phosphorescence properties. Modifications to arylpyridine ligands in the PtII complexes significantly impacted the assembling behaviour and photophysical properties of anion-free and anion-binding (ion-pairing) forms. The PtII complexes, in the presence of guest anions and their countercations, formed various anion-binding modes and ion-pairing assembled structures depending on constituents and forms (solutions and crystals). The PtII complexes emitted strong phosphorescence in deoxygenated solutions but showed extremely weak phosphorescence in the solid state owing to self-association. In contrast, the solid-state ion-pairing assemblies with tetraalkylammonium cations exhibited enhanced phosphorescence owing to the formation of hydrogen-bonding 1D-chain PtII complexes dispersed by stacking with aliphatic cations. Theoretical studies revealed that the enhanced phosphorescence in the solid-state ion-pairing assembly was attributed to preventing the delocalisation of the electron wavefunction over PtII complexes.

Luminescent Platinum(II) Complexes with Terdentate N∧C∧C Ligands

The synthesis, structure, and luminescence of Pt(II) complexes of the type [Pt(N∧C∧C)(L)] are reported, where N∧C∧C is a terdentate ligand resulting from the cycloplatination of 2-(3,5-diphenoxyphenyl)pyridine or 2-(4,4″-dimethyl-[1,1':3',1″-terphenyl]-5'-yl)pyridine, and L represents a monodentate ancillary ligand, which can be γ-picoline, 4-pyridinecarboxaldehyde, PPh3, n-butyl or 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide, CO, or the N-heterocyclic carbenes 1-butyl-3-methylimidazol-2-ylidene or 4-butyl-3-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene. Derivatives bearing CO, isocyanides, or carbenes showed the highest stabilities in solution, whereas the pyridine and PPh3 derivatives establish ligand-exchange equilibria in acetonitrile. Different supramolecular structures are observed in the solid state, which largely depend on the nature of the ancillary ligand. Isocyanides and CO favor π interactions between the aromatic rings, metallophilic Pt···Pt contacts, or a combination of both. In contrast, pyridine ligands may lead to bimolecular assemblies driven by C-H···O, C-H···Pt, or C-H/π hydrogen bonds. Luminescence was examined in fluid solution, poly(methyl methacrylate) matrices, and the solid state at 298 K, and in 2-methyltetrahydrofuran glasses at 77 K. The majority of derivatives show highly efficient emissions from 3ILCT/MLCT or 3ILCT/MLCT/LLCT excited states of monomeric species. The formation of excimers and different types of emissive aggregates are demonstrated, which lead to red-shifted emissions of different origins and characteristics depending on the involved noncovalent interactions.

Unusual Excimer/Dimer Behavior of a Highly Soluble C,N Platinum(II) Complex with a Spiro-Fluorene Motif

In this work, we introduce a spiro-fluorene unit into a phenylpyridine (CN)-type ligand as a simple way to deplanarize the structure and increase the solubility of the final platinum(II)···complex. Using a spiro-fluorene unit, orthogonal to the main coordination plane of the complex, reduces intermolecular interactions, leading to increased solubility but without significantly affecting the ability of the complex to form Pt···Pt dimers and excimers. This approach is highly important in the design of platinum(II) complexes, which often suffer from low solubility due to their mainly planar structure, and offers an alternative to the use of bulky alkyl groups. The nonplanar structure is also beneficial for vacuum-deposition techniques as it lowers the sublimation temperature. Importantly, there are no sp3 hybridized carbon atoms in the cyclometalating ligand that contain hydrogens, the undesired feature that is associated with the low stability of the materials in OLEDs. The complex displays high solubility in toluene, ∼10 mg mL-1, at room temperature, which allows producing solution-processed OLEDs in a wide range of doping concentrations, 5-100%, and EQE up to 5.9%, with a maximum luminance of 7400 cd m-2. Concurrently, we have also produced vacuum-deposited OLEDs, which display luminance up to 32 500 cd m-2 and a maximum EQE of 11.8%.

Toward Near-Infrared Emission in Pt(II)-Cyclometallated Compounds: From Excimers' Formation to Aggregation-Induced Emission

Two series of Pt(II)-cyclometallated compounds containing N^C^N tridentate and alkynyl-chromophore ligands have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The N^C^N ligands differ on the presence of R₁ = H or F in the central aromatic ring, while six different chromophores have been introduced to the alkynyl moiety. Single-crystal X-ray structures for some of the compounds reveal the presence of weak intermolecular contacts responsible for the formation of some dimers or aggregates. The photophysical characterization shows the presence of two emission bands in solution assigned to the ³π-π* transition from the N^C^N ligands mixed with ³MLCT/³ILCT transitions (higher energy band) in deaerated samples. The formation of excimers has also been identified as a broad band at longer wavelengths [near-infrared (NIR) emission] that becomes the main emission band for compounds containing phenanthrene as the chromophore. NIR emission behavior has also been explored using acetonitrile/water mixtures, and the presence of aggregates that emit at ca. 650 nm has also been detected.

Near-infrared electroluminescence beyond 940 nm in Pt(N^C^N)X complexes: influencing aggregation with the ancillary ligand X

We present a study of aggregate excited states formed by complexes of the type Pt(N^C^N)X, where N^C^N represents a tridentate cyclometallating ligand, and X = SCN or I. These materials display near-infrared (NIR) photoluminescence in film and electroluminescence in NIR OLEDs with λ max EL = 720-944 nm. We demonstrate that the use of X = SCN or I modulates aggregate formation compared to the parent complexes where X = Cl. While the identity of the monodentate ligand affects the energy of Pt-Pt excimers in solution in only a subtle way, it strongly influences aggregation in film. Detailed calculations on aggregates of different sizes support the experimental conclusions from steady-state and time-resolved luminescence studies at variable temperatures. The use of X = I appears to limit aggregation to the formation of dimers, while X = SCN promotes the formation of larger aggregates, such as tetramers and pentamers, leading in turn to NIR photo- and electroluminescence > 850 nm. A possible explanation for the contrasting influence of the monodentate ligands is the lesser steric hindrance associated with the SCN group compared to the bulkier I ligand. By exploiting the propensity of the SCN complexes to form extended aggregates, we have prepared an NIR-emitting OLED that shows very long wavelength electroluminescence, with λ max EL = 944 nm and a maximum EQE = 0.3 ± 0.1%. Such data appear to be unprecedented for a device relying on a Pt(ii) complex aggregate as the emitter.

Role of the Trifluoropropynyl Ligand in Blue-Shifting Charge-Transfer States in Emissive Pt Diimine Complexes and an Investigation into the PMMA-Imposed Rigidoluminescence and Rigidochromism

Square-planar Pt^II complexes are of interest as dopants for the emissive layer of organic light-emitting diodes. Herein, the photophysics of three Pt bipyridyl complexes with the strongly e^- withdrawing, high-field, 3,3,3-trifluoropropynyl ligand has been investigated. One complex, (phbpy)PtC₂CF₃ (phbpy = 6-phenyl-2,2'-dipyridyl), has also been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. All complexes reported are emissive in both RT CH₂Cl₂ solution (Φ_PL = 0.007 to 0.027) and PMMA film (Φ_PL = 0.25 to 0.42). The trifluoropropynyl ligand elevates the energy of the MLCT and LL'CT states above that of the IL π-π* state, resulting in IL emission in all cases. The emission energies of the trifluoropropynyl compounds are also blue-shifted relative to the analogous pentafluorophenylethynyl compounds, suggesting that the trifluoropropynyl ligand is one of the most electron-withdrawing alkynyl ligands. Rate constants for radiative and nonradiative deactivation were determined from experimentally determined values of Φ_PL and excited-state lifetimes in both solution and PMMA films. The increase in Φ_PL upon incorporation into PMMA film (rigidoluminescence) results from a decrease in the rate constant for non-radiative relaxation. Experimental activation energies for excited-state decay in combination with TDDFT are consistent with the rigidoluminescence resulting from an increase in the energy of the non-emissive triplet metal-centered state. Two of the complexes investigated, (^Ph2bpy)Pt(C₂CF₃)₂ and (^t-Bu2bpy)Pt(C₂CF₃)₂, where ^t-Bu2bpy = 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-dipyridyl and ^Ph2bpy = 4,4'-diphenyl-2,2'-dipyridyl, exhibit concentration-dependent excimer emission (orange) along with monomer emission (blue), enabling fine-tuning of the emission color. However, excimer emission was absent in cured PMMA films up to the solubility limit for solution processing of (^Ph2bpy)Pt(C₂CF₃)₂ in CH₂Cl₂, demonstrating the diffusional nature of excimer formation.

Multistimuli-Responsive Properties of Aggregated Isocyanide Cycloplatinated(II) Complexes

Here, we describe the neutral cyclometalated tert-butylisocyanide Pt^II complexes, [Pt(C^∧N)Cl(CNBu^t)] 1, the double salts [Pt(C^∧N)(CNBu^t)₂][Pt(C^∧N)Cl₂] 2, and the cationic complexes [Pt(C^∧N)(CNBu^t)₂]ClO₄ 3 [C∧N = difluorophenylpyridine (dfppy, a), 4-(2-pyridyl)benzaldehyde (ppy-CHO, b)]. A comparative study of the pseudopolymorphs 1a, 1a·CHCl₃, 1b, 1b·0.5Toluene, 1b·0.5PhF, and 3a·0.25CH₂Cl₂ reveals strong aggregation through Pt···Pt and/or π···π stacking interactions to give a variety of distinctive one-dimensional (1D) infinite chains, which modulate the photoluminescent properties. This intermolecular long-range aggregate formation is the main origin of the photoluminescent behavior of 1a and 1b complexes, which exhibit highly sensitive and reversible responses to multiple external stimuli including different volatile organic compounds (VOCs), solvents, temperatures, and pressures, with distinct color and phosphorescent color switching from green to red. Furthermore, complex 1b undergoes supramolecular self-assembly via Pt···Pt and/or π···π interactions into a polymer thin polystyrene (PS) film 10 wt % in response to toluene vapors, and 3a exhibits vapochromic and vapoluminescent behavior. Theoretical simulations on the dimer, trimer, and tetramer models of 1a and 1b have been carried out to get insight into the photophysical properties in the aggregated solid state.

Luminescent 2-phenylbenzothiazole cyclometalated PtII and IrIII complexes with chelating P^O ligands

Two series of cyclometalated Pt^II and Ir^III complexes with general formulas [Pt(pbt){PPh₂(R)-κP,O}] (2a-2c) and [Ir(pbt)₂{PPh₂(R)-κP,O}] (3a-3c), where Hpbt is 2-phenylbenzothiazol and PPh₂(R) is a diphenylphosphino donor functionalized deprotonated acid (R = o-C₆H₄CO₂a, o-C₆H₄SO₃b, CH₂CH₂CO₂c) are presented. The structures of 1, 2a-2c, 3a and 3b were confirmed by single X-ray diffraction analyses, and the intermolecular interactions in 2a were studied using Hirshfeld surface analysis and non-covalent interaction (NCI) methods on its X-ray structure. Their photophysical properties were investigated by absorption and emission analyses [CH₂Cl₂, solid (298, 77 K) and doped polystyrene (PS) films], supported by TD-DFT calculations on 1, 2a-2c and 3a. The Pt^II complexes exhibit bright phosphorescence in the region 525-542 nm, ascribed to a mixed ³IL/³MLCT excited state with a predominant ³IL contribution. The Ir^III derivatives (3a-3c) show orange photoluminescence (535-584 nm, 298 K), blue shifted at 77 K (527-560 nm), originated from the admixture of ³IL/³MLCT/³LLCT excited states. Interestingly, the photoluminescence quantum yields of the Pt complexes 2a-2c (ϕ = 46.5-66.5%) in PS films are remarkably higher than those of the corresponding iridium complexes (ϕ = 17.3-32%) and the precursor 1 (ϕ = 17%). The calculated ³MC-³IL/³MLCT energy gap for 2a and 3a accounts for the higher quantum yield of the Pt in relation to the Ir complex.

Multistimulus Response of Two Tautomeric Zn(II) Complexes and Their White-Light Emission Based on Different Mechanisms

A triphenylamine (TPA)-based 2H-quinazoline Zn(II) complex (Q-TPA-Zn) exhibiting dual fluorescence and phosphorescence emission in the solid state was designed and prepared. It possesses mechanochromic luminescence and thermochromic luminescence properties. In the solid state, the white afterglow luminescence could be observed at 77 K (CIE_xy: 0.27, 0.33) while cyan luminescence could be observed at 297 K. After thermolysis at 300 °C, Q-TPA-Zn could be transformed into Schiff base complex S-TPA-Zn with white fluorescence in the powder state (CIE_xy: 0.32, 0.38), in methanol (CIE_xy: 0.32, 0.39), and in dimethylformamide (CIE_xy: 0.26, 0.32) at room temperature. This arises from dual emission of normal* emission and tautomeric* emission induced by excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) from the benzimidazole NH group to the Schiff base N atom. Q-TPA-Zn could also be transformed into its isomeric form, S-TPA-Zn, through photochemical ring-opening reaction upon irradiation under 365 nm in the solution, exhibiting high-contrast photochromic luminescence. Interestingly, S-TPA-Zn could further be transformed into its zwitterionic isomer after continuous irradiation. The same ring-opening reaction could also take place for the orgainc compound Q-TPA via heating or 365 nm irradiation. The ring-opening reaction mechanism and ESIPT emission were interpreted via theoretical calculation.

Polymorphic Phosphorescence from Separable Aggregates with Unique Photophysical Properties

Platinum complexes aggregate into polymorphs with different intermolecular interactions leading to different photophysical properties. Strong intermolecular interactions stabilize the aggregate to such an extent that the polymorphs can be separated directly by column chromatography. Solid‐state structures as well as quantum‐chemical calculations confirmed the effect of the interactions on the photophysical properties.

The Observation of Interchain Motion in Self-Assembled Crystalline Platinum(II) Complexes: An Exquisite Case but By No Means the Only One in Molecular Solids

In organic and organometallic solids, upon electronic excitation, most intermolecular structural relaxations follow a pathway along the π-π stacking direction or metal-metal bond with significant coupling strength. Differently, we discovered that the self-assembled platinum(II) complexes, Pt(fppz)₂, exhibit an unusual interchain contraction. The ground-state and excited-state multiple local minima were distinguished by temperature-dependent excitation/emission spectra, indicating the existence of multiple local minima. The time-resolved emission decay revealed the excited-state structural relaxation lifetime with τ_obs = 41 ns at 298 K. Temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the packing geometries contract 0.6 Å along the interchain direction (a-axis) at 50 K compared to the geometries at 298 K. Such structural displacements render the slow internal conversion rate in the excited states. We thus demonstrate the correlation between the packing geometries and the excited-state dynamics of the self-assembled Pt(II) complexes, shedding light on the unique direction of interchain structural deformation of the molecular aggregates.

Efficient and Stable Molecular-Aggregate-Based Organic Light-Emitting Diodes with Judicious Ligand Design

Phosphorescent molecular aggregates show promise in realizing efficient and stable organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) operating at high brightness level, which is highly desired for future lighting and display applications. Herein, four tetradentate Pd(II) complexes are prepared with judicious ligand design, and their electrochemical and photophysical properties are thoroughly examined. The studies indicate that slight structural changes of ligands can modify the hole and electron transporting capabilities, and alter the horizontal emitting dipole ratios of aggregates in amorphous film, the latter of which are sensitive to the thin-film deposition conditions including the deposition rate and the choice of the templating layer. An optimized OLED device using Pd3O8-Py5 aggregates exhibits a peak external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 37.3% and a reduced efficiency roll-off with high EQEs of 36.0% and 32.5% at 1000 and 10 000 cd m^-2 , respectively. Moreover, such an efficient device demonstrates a long measured LT₉₅ (time to 95% of the initial luminance) lifetime of over 500 h with an initial brightness of 17 304 cd m^-2 corresponding to an estimated LT₉₅ lifetime of 48 246 h at 1000 cd m^-2 .

A Carbazole-Bridged Biscyclometalated Diplatinum Complex: Synthesis, Characterization, and Dual-Mode Aggregation-Enhanced Phosphorescence

A cationic carbazole-bridged biscyclometalated diplatinum complex 4 has been synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal X-ray analysis demonstrates that complex 4 displays a dimeric structure with noncovalent π-π stacking and unique double Pt-Pt interactions. In aerated dilute CH₃CN, complex 4 is characterized by a very weak monomeric yellow emission (λ_emi = 547 nm; Φ = 0.51%), which is attributed to the triplet intraligand (³LC) excited state mixing with some charge transfer characters. In contrast, under aerated conditions, the dispersion of 4 in a mixed solvent of CH₃CN/Et₂O (1/9, v/v) or CH₃CN/H₂O (1/9, v/v) displays intense yellow (λ_emi = 550 nm; Φ = 35.5%; τ = 11.10 μs) and red emission (λ_emi = 635 nm; Φ = 14.1%; τ = 7.00 μs), respectively. These aggregation-induced phosphorescent emission enhancements are considered being caused by the oxygen-shielding effect and the molecular rigidification-induced decrease of nonradiative decays in the aggregate state. The morphology and size of the aggregates under these two conditions are examined by scanning electron microscope and dynamic light scattering analysis. The absorption and emission properties of 4 are further rationalized by time-dependent density functional theory calculations on a model compound.

From luminescence quenching to high-efficiency phosphorescence: a theoretical study on the monomeric and dimeric forms of platinum(II) complexes with both 2-pyridylimidazol-2-ylidene and bipyrazolate chelates

To develop solid-state light-emitting materials with high luminescence efficiency, determining the potential photophysics and luminescence mechanisms of the aggregation state remains a challenge and a priority. Here, we apply density functional theory to study the photophysical properties of a series of square planar Pt(ii) complexes in both monomeric and dimeric forms. We reveal that four monomeric Pt(ii) complexes are dominated by triplet ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer, and the lack of the triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer feature results in weak spin-orbit coupling (SOC), which leads to limited radiative rates; moreover, calculated nonradiative transition rates are one or two orders of magnitude higher than those radiative rates because a large amount of reorganization energy caused by the vibration of the bipyrazolate (bipz) ligand cannot be readily suppressed in the monomeric form. Therefore, four monomers exhibit photoluminescence quenching in CH2Cl2 solution in both theoretical calculations and experiments. However, in the solid state, the intense luminescence phenomenon indicates obviously distinct properties between the monomer and aggregation. We carried out a dimer model to interpret that the interaction of PtPt induces a metal-metal-to-ligand charge-transfer excimeric state, which leads more metal components to participate in the charge transfer and enhance the SOC effect. At the same time, the ligand vibration can be significantly reduced by the shortened distance, and there is a strong π-π packing interaction in the dimer; thus, an excellent quantum yield can be achieved in aggregation. In addition, we disclose that introducing bulky substituents bearing electron-donating groups at R' and R'' positions have little effect on the properties of the monomers; however, there is a benefit of restricting the internal reorganization energy through the intermolecular interaction when packing in the solid state. Therefore, substitutions can be tuned to improve the properties of monomers (such as emission energy and reorganization energy). We hope that our work will shine some light on Pt(ii) emitters in the fabrication of efficient OLEDs.

Multinuclear PtII Complexes: Why Three is Better Than Two to Enhance Photophysical Properties

The self-assembly of platinum complexes is a well-documented process that leads to interesting changes of the photophysical and electrochemical behavior as well as to a change in reactivity of the complexes. However, it is still not clear how many metal units must interact in order to achieve the desired properties of a large assembly. This work aimed to clarify the role of the number of interacting PtII units leading to an enhancement of the spectroscopic properties and how to address inter- versus intramolecular processes. Therefore, a series of neutral multinuclear PtII complexes were synthesized and characterized, and their photophysical properties at different concentration were studied. Going from the monomer to dimers, the growth of a new emission band and the enhancement of the emission properties were observed. Upon increasing the platinum units up to three, the monomeric blue emission could not be detected anymore and a concentration independent bright-yellow/orange emission, due to the establishment of intramolecular metallophilic interactions, was observed.

Versatile Pt(II) Pyrazolate Complexes: Emission Tuning via Interplay of Chelate Designs and Stacking Assemblies

Three homoleptic Pt(II) metal complexes [Pt(im^Pz)₂] (1), [Pt(imⁱz)₂] (2), and [Pt(im^Mz)₂] (3) were synthesized from the treatment of Pt(DMSO)₂Cl₂ and functional imidazolyl pyrazole in refluxing tetrahydrofuran (THF). Alternatively, the heteroleptic Pt(II) complexes [Pt(im^Pz)(fppz)] (4), [Pt(imⁱz)(fppz)] (5), and [Pt(im^Mz)(fppz)] (6) were obtained from the treatment of a common intermediate [Pt(fppzH)Cl₂] with a corresponding imidazolyl chelate. Pt(II) complexes 1, 2, and 5 were studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction to reveal the corresponding packing arrangement in their crystal lattices, among which both homoleptic complexes 1 and 2 formed monomeric species, while heteroleptic 5 aligned as a dimer with a nonbonding Pt···Pt contact of 3.574 Å. Subsequent photophysical examinations showed that the homoleptic 1-3 and heteroleptic 4-6 exhibited the structured sky-blue ππ* emission and structureless light-green-emitting metal-metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MMLCT) emission in the solid state, respectively. A shortened Pt···Pt interaction of approximately 0.34-0.35 nm was confirmed in thin films of all heteroleptic Pt(II) complexes 4-6 by grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD) analyses. Finally, Pt(II) complex 6 was employed as a dopant in the fabrication of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) devices with varied doping ratios, among which OLEDs with only 1 wt % 6 in the SimCP host exhibited a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 5.8% and CIE_x,y values of 0.20, 0.31. In contrast, OLEDs using a nondoped architecture (i.e., 100% of 6 in the emitting layer (EML)) achieved a maximum EQE of 26.8%, current efficiency (CE) of 91.7 cd A^-1, and power efficiency (PE) of 80.1 lm·W^-1 and CIE_x,y values of 0.41, 0.55, manifesting their versatility in various degrees of stacking assemblies and hence facile color-tuning capability on OLEDs.

Single-Molecular White-Light Emitters and Their Potential WOLED Applications

White organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs) are superior to traditional incandescent light bulbs and compact fluorescent lamps in terms of their merits in ensuring pure white-light emission, low-energy consumption, large-area thin-film fabrication, etc. Unfortunately, WOLEDs based on multilayered or multicomponent (red, green, and blue (RGB)) emissive layers can suffer from some remarkable disadvantages, such as intricate device fabrication and voltage-dependent emission color, etc. Single molecules, which can emit white light, can be used to replace multiple emitters, leading to a simplified fabrication process, stable and reproducible WOLEDs. Recently, the performance of WOLEDs by using single molecules is catching up with that of the state-of-the-art devices fabricated by multicomponent emitters. Therefore, an increasing attention has been paid on single white-light-emitting materials for efficient WOLEDs. In this review, different mechanisms of white-light emission from a single molecule and the performance of single-molecule-based WOLEDs are collected and expounded, hoping to light up the interesting subject on single-molecule white-light-emitting materials, which have great potential as white-light emitters for illumination and lighting applications in the world.

Luminescence of mononuclear Pt(ii) complexes with glycolate: external stimuli-induced excimer emission changes to oligomer emissions

Trihydrate crystals of novel Pt^II complexes [Pt^II(bpy)(gl)] (bpy: 2,2′-bipyridine; Hgl⁻: glycolate) show excimer emission changes to two kinds of oligomer emissions depending on the type of external stimuli.

On-Surface Reactive Planarization of Pt(II) Complexes

A series of Pt(II) complexes with tetradentate luminophores has been designed, synthesized, and deposited on coinage metal surfaces with the aim to produce highly planar self‐assembled monolayers. Low‐temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal a significant initial nonplanarity for all complexes. A subsequent metal‐catalyzed separation of the nonplanar moiety at the bridging unit via the scission of a C−N bond is observed, leaving behind a largely planar core complex. The activation barrier of this bond scission process is found to depend strongly on the chemical nature of both bridging group and coordination plane, and to increase from Cu(111) through Ag(111) to Au(111).

Photoluminescent Anisotropy Amplification in Polymorphic Organic Nanocrystals by Light-Harvesting Energy Transfer

Polymorphism and anisotropy are fundamental phenomena of crystalline materials. However, the structure-dependent photoluminescent (PL) anisotropy in polymorphic organic crystals has remained unexplored. Herein, two polymorphic nanocrystals, green-emitting nanorods (PtD-g) and yellow-emitting nanoplates (PtD-y), were obtained from a platinum(II)-β-diketonate complex. The PtD-y crystals display remarkable PL anisotropy with an anisotropy ratio of up to 0.87 whereas the emission of the PtD-g crystals is nearly unpolarized. The polarization properties are rationalized on the different molecular packing of these crystals. By light-harvesting energy transfer, the PtD-y crystals are successfully used to amplify the emission polarization of a red-emitting platinum acceptor (PtA) doped into the donor crystalline matrix, which is otherwise weakly polarized as pure crystals.

Excimer formation and evolution of excited state properties in discrete dimeric stacking of an anthracene derivative: a computational investigation

Herein, density functional theory (DFT) computations were performed to investigate the discrete dimer of a mono-substituted anthracene derivative (2-TA-AN), which exhibited highly efficient pure excimer fluorescence in its crystal form. As a more practical model, its geometry, potential energy curve and excited state property were systematically calculated to better understand the excimer formation process and photophysical properties. The compressed excimer geometry is responsible for the highly efficient excimer emission, arising from the enhanced rigidity that greatly suppresses its non-radiative vibrations. Potential energy curves along three directions reveal the non-uniqueness of excimer formation along the long axis of anthracene, which is in a good agreement with the experimental findings. Upon decreasing the displacement, the intermonomer charge-transfer (CT) component gradually increased towards an approximately equivalent hybridization with the locally-emissive (LE) state of the monomer during the formation of the excimer. The excimer emission wavelength versus intermonomer CT content shows a similar trend along the three directions, revealing a turning point related to the essential transition of the excited state properties from the LE of the monomer to the HLCT of the excimer. The present results will contribute to the better understanding of the structure-property relationships in excimer formation and photophysical properties.

Multi-molecular emission of a cationic Pt(ii) complex through hydrogen bonding interactions

The cationic Pt complexes with amide groups have been found to show dimer emission through hydrogen bonding interactions with counter anions even at low concentration. In order to investigate further details of dimer emission, we prepared three Pt complexes, Pt·B(C₆F₅)₄, Pt·Cl, and Pt·PF₆, whose counter anions possess different strengths of a hydrogen bonding acceptor. Hydrogen bonding interactions in the ground state and excited-state dynamics of the Pt complexes were evaluated by NMR analysis, temperature dependence, and kinetics of dimer emission. These studies revealed that the hydrogen bonding interaction in the ground state is essential for dimer emission, but too strong hydrogen bonding prevents dimer emission due to the inhibition of a stacked dimer formation in the excited state. Owing to this trade-off, the Pt complex with a moderate hydrogen bonding acceptor, PF₆^-, most effectively shows dimer emission. In general, a strong supramolecular interaction efficiently provides a desired assembled structure showing multi-molecular emission. We revealed a unique phenomenon that a moderate interaction is beneficial to effective multi-molecular emission.

Photokinetic study on remarkable excimer phosphorescence from heteroleptic cyclometalated platinum(ii) complexes bearing a benzoylated 2-phenylpyridinate ligand

Novel heteroleptic cyclometalated platinum(ii) complexes consisting of 5'-benzoylated 2-phenylpyridinate (ppy) cyclometalated and acetylacetonate ancillary ligands were synthesized, and their photoluminescence (PL) properties were investigated. The 5'-benzoylated complex without any other substituents exhibited phosphorescence-based monomer emission at 479 nm in dichloromethane (10 μM, rt) with a PL quantum yield of 0.28. On the other hand, in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) film, remarkable excimer emission additionally emerged at ca. 600 nm with a relatively high PL quantum yield of 0.47 as the doping level increased to 0.20 mmmol g^-1, which was comparably intense in comparison with the monomer emission. In the case of the complexes with unsubstituted, 4'-benzoylated, and 5'-fluorinated ppy cyclometalated ligands, excimer emission was modestly generated at the same doping level, and thus the introduction of a benzoyl group to the 5'-position is effective to obtain remarkable excimer emission. The combination of benzoyl and fluoro groups was more effective at inducing excimer emission, and the intensity of excimer emission of the 2-(5-benzoyl-4,6-difluorophenyl)pyridinate-based complex was 3.5 times larger than that of monomer emission at a doping level of 0.20 mmmol g^-1 in PMMA. From the analysis of PL lifetimes at varying concentrations, photokinetic profiles were fully analyzed according to the model system for the irreversible excimer formation, and the excimer formation rate constant of the 5'-benzoylated complex was determined in dichloromethane as 2.2 × 10⁹ M^-1 s^-1, which is 4.4 times larger than that of the unsubstituted complex. We also fabricated an organic light-emitting diode using the 2-(5-benzoyl-4,6-difluorophenyl)pyridinate-based complex as a single emitter. The device exhibited pseudo-white EL with the Commission internationale de l'éclairage chromaticity coordinates of (0.42, 0.42).
