Abstract
A facile and effective tandem reaction of ynones and methyl salicylates was developed to obtain a broad range of 3-acyl chromones in moderate-to-excellent yields. This protocol underwent a Michael addition and cyclization process, which exhibited easily accessible substrates, broad substrate scope, and high regioselectivity under mild and transition-metal-free conditions. Moreover, gram-scale reaction and further chemical transformation of the products were also further studied.

Abstract
Palladium-promoted acyl migration was observed in the reaction of (Z)-pent-2-en-4-yn-1-yl alkanoates in the presence of DBU to yield 2-(alkanoylmethyl)furan derivatives (2) in high yields. Compounds 2 then underwent oxidative decarbonylation to afford 2-acylfurans with O2 as the oxidant under mild and metal-free conditions. The mechanistic pathway of the reaction involving an intramolecular cyclization and acyl group shift is discussed.

Abstract
Photoexcitation is one of the acknowledged methods to activate Ni-based cross-coupling reactions, but factors that govern the photoactivity of organonickel complexes have not yet been established. Here we report the excited-state cross-coupling activities of Ni(ii) metallacycle compounds, which display ∼104 times enhancement for the C-S bond-forming reductive elimination reaction upon Ni-centered ligand-field transitions. The effects of excitation energy and ancillary ligands on photoactivity have been investigated with 17 different nickelacycle species in combination with four corresponding acyclic complexes. Spectroscopic and computational electronic structural characterizations reveal that, regardless of coordinated species, d-d transitions can induce Ni-C bond homolysis, and that the reactivity of the resulting Ni(i) species determines the products of the overall reaction. The photoactivity mechanism established in this study provides general insights into the excited-state chemistry of organonickel(ii) complexes.

Abstract
An unambiguous and precise method for the synthesis of 3,1-benzoxathiin-4-ones/1,3-benzodioxin-4-ones by the reaction of propargylic alcohols and salicylic/thiosalicylic acids under a catalyst-free and open-air atmosphere is described. This strategy is found to be quite general using various 2-mercapto and 2-hydroxybenzoic acids providing benzoxathiinones/benzodioxinones in good yields.

Abstract
Heterocycles have garnered significant attention because they are important functional building blocks in various useful molecules, such as pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, pesticides, and materials. Several studies have been conducted regarding the preparation of heterocyclic skeletons with an emphasis on selectivity and efficiency. Three strategies are typically employed to construct cyclic molecules, namely, cyclization, cycloaddition, and ring-size alterations. Although each method has certain advantages, cycloaddition may be superior from the viewpoint of divergence. Specifically, cycloadditions enable the construction of rings from several pieces. However, the construction of heterocycles via cycloadditions is more challenging than the construction of carbocycles. For heterocycle construction, simple pericyclic reactions rarely work smoothly because of the large HOMO-LUMO gap unless well-designed combinations, such as electron-rich dienes and aldehydes, are utilized. Thus, a different approach should be employed to prepare heterocycles via cycloadditions. To this end, the use of metallacycles containing heteroatoms is expected to serve as a promising solution. In this study, we focused on the preparation of heteroatom-containing nickelacycles. Because nickel possesses a relatively high redox potential and an affinity for heteroatoms, several methods were developed to synthesize heteronickelacycles from various starting materials. The prepared nickelacycles were demonstrated to be reasonable intermediates in cycloaddition reactions, which were used to prepare various heterocycles. In this Account, we introduce the following four methods to prepare heterocycles via heteronickelacycles. (1) Direct oxidative insertion of Ni(0) to α,β-unsaturated enone derivatives: treatment of 3-ethoxycarbonyl-4-phenyl-3-buten-2-one with Ni(0) afforded an oxa-nickelacycle, which reacted with alkynes to give pyrans. (2) Substitution of a part of a cyclic compound with low-valent nickel, accompanied by elimination of small molecules such as CO, CO2, and acetophenone: treatment of phthalic anhydride with Ni(0) in the presence of ZnCl2 afforded the oxanickelacycle, which was formed via decarbonylative insertion of Ni(0) and reacted with alkynes to give isocumarins. (3) Cyclization to a nickelacycle, accompanied by two C-C σ-bond activations: insertion of Ni(0) into an arylnitrile, followed by aryl cyanation of an alkyne, gave alkenylnickel as an intermediate. The alkenylnickel species subsequently underwent an intramolecular nucleophilic attack with an arylcarbonyl group to form a cyclized product with concomitant cleavage of the C-C σ-bond between the carbonyl and aryl groups. (4) Assembly of several components to form a heteroatom-containing nickelacycle via cycloaddition: a new [2 + 2 + 1] cyclization reaction was carried out using an α,β-unsaturated ester, isocyanate, and alkyne via a nickelacycle. On the basis of these four strategies, we developed new methods to prepare heterocyclic compounds using nickelacycles as the key active species.

Abstract
A silanol-directed, palladium-catalyzed C-H carboxylation reaction of phenols to give salicylic acids has been developed. This method features high efficiency and selectivity, and excellent functional-group tolerance. The generality of this method was demonstrated by the carboxylation of estrone and by the synthesis of an unsymmetrically o,o'-disubstituted phenolic compound through two sequential C-H functionalization processes.

Abstract
Alkene oxyacylation is a new strategy for the preparation of β-oxygenated ketones. Now, with Ir catalysis and low-cost salicylate esters, alkene oxyacylation can be promoted by simple and versatile hydroxyl directing groups. This paper discusses catalyst optimization, substituent effects, mechanistic experiments, and the challenges associated with asymmetric catalysis. Crossover experiments point to several key steps of the mechanism being reversible, including the most likely enantiodetermining steps. The oxyacylation products are also prone to racemization without catalyst when heated alone; however, crossover is not observed without catalyst. These observations account for the low levels of enantioinduction in alkene oxyacylation. The versatility of the hydroxyl directing group is highlighted by demonstrating further transformations of the products.

Abstract
A nickel-catalyzed cycloaddition has been developed where readily available anthranilic acid derivatives react with alkynes to afford substituted indoles. The reaction involves oxidative addition of Ni(0) to an ester moiety, which allows intermolecular addition to alkynes via decarbonylation and 1,3-acyl migration.
