Abstract
On the basis of the chiral ion pair between catalytic anionic stereogenic-at-cobalt(III) complexes and halonium ion intermediates, an asymmetric halogenation/semipinacol rearrangement reaction has been established using N-bromosuccinimide as the halogen source. This protocol provides an alternative approach for accessing a diverse set of chiral β-bromocycloketones in good yields with high enantioselectivities (≤96% yield, 95.5:4.5 er).

Abstract
A highly enantioselective cobalt-catalyzed semipinacol rearrangement of symmetric α,α-diarylallylic alcohols is disclosed. A chiral cobalt-salen catalyst generates a highly electrophilic carbocation surrogate following hydrogen atom transfer and radical-polar crossover steps. This methodology provides access to enantioenriched α-aryl ketones through invertive displacement of a cobalt(IV) complex during 1,2-aryl migration. A combination of readily available reagents, silane and N-fluoropyridinium oxidant, are used to confer this type of reactivity. An exploration into the effect of aryl substitution revealed the reaction tolerates para- and meta-halogenated, mildly electron-rich and electron-poor aromatic rings with excellent enantioselectivities and yields. The yield of the rearrangement diminished with highly electron-rich aryl rings whereas very electron-deficient and ortho-substituted arenes led to poor enantiocontrol. A Hammett analysis demonstrated the migratory preference for electron-rich aromatic rings, which is consistent with the intermediacy of a phenonium cation.

Abstract
We report a photochemical method for the semipinacol rearrangement of unactivated allylic alcohols. Aliphatic as well as aromatic groups participate as migrating groups, yielding a variety of α,α-disubstituted ketones. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions and is compatible with ethers, esters, halides, nitriles, carbamates, and substituted arenes. The operationally simple and fully catalytic conditions prescribe 1 mol % benzothiazinoquinoxaline as organophotocatalyst, 0.5 mol % Co-salen, and 10 mol % lutidinium triflate and, importantly, display reactivity complementary to procedures employing Brønsted acid. We showcase the utility of the protocol in late-stage drug diversifications.

Abstract
An intermolecular controllable Pd-catalyzed spirocyclization of isocyano cycloalkenes has been developed, offering efficient and selective approaches toward spirocyclic hydropyrrole scaffolds. 2-Azaspiro-1,7-dienes could be obtained through a "chain-walking" process with aryl/vinyl iodides as electrophiles, while the normal Heck product 2-azaspiro-1,6-dienes were selectively generated when aryl triflates were used as the coupling partner of isocyanides. Mechanistic studies suggested that the counteranion of the Pd(II) intermediate played a crucial role in the regioselectivity control. Dihydropyrrole-fused 5,6,7-membered spirocycles were switchably accessed under mild conditions with wide functional group tolerance.

Abstract
An unprecedented enantioselective organocatalytic spirocyclization strategy is presented by in situ generation of aminoisobezofulvenes. The reaction sequence involves a reductive Michael/aldol-condensation/Michael addition cascade by iminium-enamine catalysis. The key success of this spirocyclization was the formation of intermediatory nucleophilic aminoisobenzofuvenes accountable for intramolecular Michael addition. Benzospirononanes featuring an all carbon qauternary spirocenter were obtained using proline-derived amino-organocatalyst in moderate to good yields and excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivities (up to >20 : 1 dr, and 99 % ee). Post-methodological manipulation of benzospirononanes was also demonstrated.

Abstract
A catalytic protio-semipinacol ring-expansion reaction has been developed for the highly enantioselective conversion of tertiary vinylic cyclopropyl alcohols into cyclobutanone products bearing α-quaternary stereogenic centers. The method relies on the cocatalytic effect of a chiral dual-hydrogen-bond donor (HBD) with hydrogen chloride. Experimental evidence is provided for a stepwise mechanism where protonation of the alkene generates a short-lived, high-energy carbocation, which is followed by C-C bond migration to deliver the enantioenriched product. This research applies strong acid/chiral HBD cocatalysis to weakly basic olefinic substrates and lays the foundation for further investigations of enantioselective reactions involving high-energy cationic intermediates.

Abstract
This Claisen rearrangement establishes the feasibility of DyKAT of γ-epimeric enals via dienamine formation to afford enantioenriched products. γ-Aryl and -alkyl enals, and exocyclic enals that introduce quaternary centers, are all amenable substrates. Products are readily converted into pyrrolidines or cyclopentenols. Notably, a reactive dienamine intermediate has been isolated from a catalytic reaction, fully characterized, and converted to product upon reexposure to reaction conditions. Product configuration arises from a directing C-H···π interaction in the transition state.

Abstract

The catalyzed desymmetrizative
ring expansion of alkenylcyclobutanols
promoted by halofunctionalization of the alkene moiety with N-bromosuccinimide has been experimentally and computationally
studied. The reaction yields highly enantioenriched cyclopentanones
bearing two all-carbon quaternary stereocenters, one of them being
generated in the rearrangement of the cyclobutane ring and the other
by enantioselective desymmetrization. The reaction is competitive
with the formation of a spiroepoxide, but it turns completely selective
toward the cyclopentanone when a chiral bisphosphonium magnesium salt
is employed as a catalyst. Mechanistic studies support the formation
of an ion pair leading to a complex with only a unit of phosphoric
acid, which is the resting state of the catalytic cycle. Calculations
reproduce in an excellent way the observed reactivity and predict
the effect exerted by the substituents of the aromatic ring linked
to the double bond. The computational studies also revealed the reaction
as a highly asynchronous concerted process taking place as one kinetic
step but in two stages: (i) halogenation of the double bond and (ii)
rearrangement of the cyclobutane. No intermediates are present in
the reaction as energy minima. The experimental scope of the reaction
further confirms the predictions for the observed reactivity and selectivity.

Abstract
An SPA-triazolium bromide-catalyzed transannular C-acylation of enol lactones is presented. This methodology provides convenient access to a range of enantioenriched spirocyclic 1,3-diketones in moderate to high yields and enantioselectivities and features a broad substrate scope in terms of enol lactones. The catalytic capability of this triazolium salt catalyst is also demonstrated in this enantioselective transformation, which could inspire its further application.

Abstract
The structures of five new natural products (GB 27-GB 31, 1-5), isolated as minor components from the bark of Galbulimima baccata, have been determined by 2D NMR spectroscopy in combination with DFT calculations. Among the alkaloids, GB 31 (5) belongs to Class I, GB 27 (1) and 28 (2) belong to Class II, and GB 30 (4) belongs to Class III GB alkaloids. GB 31 is the first non-nitrogen-containing GB "alkaloid", being a biosynthetic oxidation product of himbacine, himandravine, or himbeline. GB 29 (3) has an entirely new natural product scaffold but belongs to Class IV (miscellaneous alkaloids). The isolation of a new Galbulimima scaffold has revealed a new pathway in the biosynthesis of the GB alkaloids. The new molecules isolated have shed further light on the biogenetic relationship among these structurally unique and complex groups of alkaloids. We present, for the first time, a unified biogenesis for the GB alkaloids that were first isolated in the 1950s and now number over 40 examples. This work also brings full circle the story of Galbulimima alkaloids. A life-long project of Wal Taylor involving one of his first students (Lew Mander) and one of his last students (Peter Karuso), a story stretching over six decades, has come to a final conclusion.

Abstract
A novel oxyallyl cation promoted semipinacol rearrangement of indole-type allylic alcohols was disclosed for the stereodivergent synthesis of spiro-indolines. A variety of spiro-indolines were obtained with moderate to good yields. Three contiguous stereocenters, two of which are vicinal quaternary centers, were effectively formed with good diastereoselectivity. It is worth noting that two diastereoisomers of rearranged products can be readily achieved by easily regulating the reaction conditions. This method may provide an applicable approach for the synthesis of natural indole alkaloids.

Abstract
Pinnigorgiols B and E are 9,11-secosteroids with a unique tricyclic γ-diketone framework. Herein, we report the first synthesis of these natural products from inexpensive, commercially available ergosterol. This synthesis features a semipinacol rearrangement and an acyl radical cyclization/hemiketalization cascade; the latter efficiently assembled the tricyclic γ-diketone skeleton, with two rings and three contiguous stereogenic centers being formed in a single step.

Abstract
The development of methods toward the construction of quaternary carbon centers has been a hot topic in recent years. In this work, an Au(I)-catalyzed intramolecular cyclization/semipinacol rearrangement of allene-containing allylic silyl ether was developed to provide a direct strategy for the construction of multisubstituted cyclohexene-type compounds with a quaternary carbon center in moderate to good yields. In particular, this method provides an alternative synthetic strategy for the construction of a multisubstituted spirocyclo[4.5]decane skeleton and may be applied to the synthesis of related bioactive molecules and their derivatives, thus facilitating the corresponding functional studies.

Abstract
Efficient combination of two or more reactions into a practically useful purification free sequence is of great significance for the achievement of structural complexity and diversity, and an important approach for the development of new synthetic strategies that are industrially step-economic and environmentally friendly. In this work, a facile and efficient method for the construction of highly functionalized spirocyclo[4.5]decane derivatives containing a synthetically challenging quaternary carbon center has been successfully developed through the realization of a tandem Castro–Stephens coupling/1,3-acyloxy shift/cyclization/semipinacol rearrangement sequence. Thus a series of multi-substituted spirocyclo[4.5]decane and functionalized cyclohexane skeletons with a phenyl-substituted quaternary carbon center have been constructed using this method as illustrated by 24 examples in moderate to good yields. The major advantages of this method over the known strategies are better transformation efficiency (four consecutive transformations in one tandem reaction), product complexity and diversity. As a support of its potential application, a quick construction of the key tetracyclic diterpene skeleton of waihoensene has been achieved. An efficient construction of spirocyclo[4.5]decane derivatives is developed via a Castro–Stephens coupling/1,3-acyloxy shift/cyclization/semipinacol rearrangement sequence.![]()

Abstract
We report the first examples of catalytic enantioselective benzilic ester rearrangement reaction. In the presence of a catalytic amount of Cu(OTf)2 and a chiral box ligand under mild conditions, reaction of 2,3-diketoesters with alcohols afforded structurally diverse α-aryl(alkyl) substituted-α-hydroxy malonates (tartronic esters) in good to excellent yields with high enantioselectivities. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicated that hemiketalization, rather than the dynamic kinetic resolution of hemiketal, was the enantiodetermining step under our reaction conditions.

Abstract
A novel one-pot semipinacol rearrangement/Michael addition/Henry reaction of vinylogous α-ketols with nitroolefins has been achieved through the promotion of two Lewis acids, namely, TMSOTf and TiCl4, at temperatures between 0 and -78 °C. A range of synthetically challenging polyfunctionalized 6-5-5 and 7-5-5 fused tricyclic carbocycles bearing up to five continuous stereocenters, including one quaternary carbon center, are rapidly constructed in moderate to good yields with good to high diastereoselectivities in most cases.

Abstract
New types of organocatalytic 1,2-rearrangements, which resemble the Smiles-like or semi-pinacol-like rearrangement, of Michael adducts of 1,3-dicarbonyl-2-alkyl compounds and nitroalkenes have been realized. Unlike the well-known conjugate addition, the reaction affords the 1-phenyl-1-nitroalkanes via unprecedented rearrangement and cascade reactions. Structures of the appropriate products were unambiguously characterized by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract
Electrochemical oxidative radical trifluoromethylation/semipinacol rearrangement sequences of alkenyl alcohols were developed in this study. This approach is environmentally benign and uses the shelf-stable Langlois reagent as a trifluoromethyl radical precursor and electrons as the oxidizing reagents. The present protocol offers a facile route to prepare β-trifluoromethylated ketone derivatives.

Abstract
An electrophilic thiocyano semipinacol rearrangement of allylic alcohols has been achieved for the first time by using N-thiocyano-dibenzenesulfonimide (NTSI). This approach provides a direct, simple, and efficient strategy for the formation of thiocyano carbonyl compounds with moderate to excellent yields. Meanwhile, an all-carbon quaternary center was rapidly constructed. In addition, an asymmetric version of this tandem reaction was preliminarily investigated.

Abstract
The first organocatalytic asymmetric synthesis of spiro-dihydropyrano cyclohexanones has been developed via the cascade reaction between cyanoketones and cyclic 2,4-dienones. A cinchona alkaloid-derived bifunctional primary amine catalyst in combination with N-Boc-tleucine was found to be the most effective for this spirocyclization reaction and provided the desired products in moderate to good yields with high enantioselectivities.

Abstract
An enantioselective sulfenylation/semipinacol rearrangement of 1,1-disubstituted and trisubstituted allylic alcohols was accomplished with a chiral Lewis base and a chiral Brønsted acid as cocatalysts, generating various β-arylthio ketones bearing an all-carbon quaternary center in moderate to excellent yields and excellent enantioselectivities. These chiral arylthio ketone products are common intermediates with many applications, for example, in the design of new chiral catalysts/ligands and the total synthesis of natural products. Computational studies (DFT calculations) were carried out to explain the enantioselectivity and the role of the chiral Brønsted acid. Additionally, the synthetic utility of this method was exemplified by an enantioselective total synthesis of (-)-herbertene and a one-pot synthesis of a chiral sulfoxide and sulfone.

Abstract
The first examples of electrochemical trifluoromethylation and sulfonylation/semipinacol rearrangements of allylic alcohols were developed using cheap and stable RSO2Na (R = CF3, Ph) as reagents. Various β-trifluoromethyl and sulfonated ketones were obtained in moderate to excellent yields. This strategy provides a facile, direct, and complementary approach to construct all-carbon quaternary stereocenters. In addition, the reaction has the advantages of being chemical oxidant-free and metal-free and has safe and mild reaction conditions.

Abstract
A rhodium-catalyzed tandem reaction of alkynyl cyclobutanols with salicylaldehydes has been developed. The reaction offers a new and atom-economical approach for the selective preparation of multisubstituted 2-(2-oxo-2-phenylethyl)cyclopentanone in high yields under mild reaction conditions with tolerance of a broad range of substituted alkynyl cyclobutanols and salicylaldehyes. The isolation of intermediate suggests that the reaction proceeds through a sequential process of intermolecular hydroacylation and semipinacol rearrangement.

Abstract
Rodium chiral diene complex-catalyzed enantioselective cycloaddition of aryl α-diazoarylacetates and electron-enriched Danishefsky-type dienes afforded highly functionalized and optically enriched cyclopentenones in excellent yields (up to 97% yield) and with good to excellent enantioselectivities (60-92% ee). (-)-1,13-Herbertenediol was successfully synthesized in an overall 25% yield employing the optically enriched cyclopentenone with an all-carbon quaternary center as the key intermediate.
